Effects of the Mixture of <i>Cichorium intybus</i>L. and <i>Cinnamomum zeylanicum</i>on Hepatic Enzymes Activity and Biochemical Parameters in Patients with Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

The prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) as a metabolic disorder affecting the liver function is rapidly increasing and there is a need to develop new and more efficient treatment. This study was designed to evaluate the protective effect of Cichorium intybus L. and Cinnamon mixture infusion (2.5 and 0.5 g/100mL and twice/day) on patients with NAFLD. This before-after clinical trial study was performed on 25 patients with NAFLD. They were administered the mixture of extract prepared in special bags twice a day for 30 days. Hepatic and metabolic markers of NAFLD like alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphates (ALP), fasting blood sugar (FBS), cholesterol (chol), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in plasma and also, fatty liver ultrasonographic grading were determined before and after using the extracts. 30-day treatment with extracts in NAFLD patients resulted in a significant decrease in ALT and AST. FBS, TG and ALP were also decreased after administration of the extracts but not significantly. A significant linear correlation was found between age and ALP, and between gender and liver enzymes. It is concluded that the mixture of Cichorium intybus L. and Cinnamon extracts has some benefits in NAFLD patients making them valuable for future investigations.

目的分析20例中老年尿毒症患者肾移植前、后左室结构和功能的改变。方法二维、M型及多普勒超声心动图测量20例正常人、20例中老年尿毒症患者肾移植前、肾成功移植后1个月及三个月以后的左室结构及功能。结果病例组肾移植后一个月扩张的左房内径、左室舒末径均较术前减小,增厚的左室壁厚度开始变薄,三个月后增厚的左室壁厚度、收缩功能及舒张功能较移植术前明显改善(P<0.01),左房内径及左室壁厚度仍高于对照组(P<0.05),左室舒末径与正常无差异。结论中老年尿毒症患者在成功进行肾移植术后,左室的结构及功能逐渐得以改善,术后3个月变化明显。

Entirely subcutaneous defibrillator and complex congenital heart disease: Data on long-term clinical follow-up

AIM To describe the long-term follow-up of patients with complex congenital heart disease who underwent subcutaneous implantable cardiac defibrillator(S-ICD), focusing on local complications, appropriate and inappropriate *** Patients with complex congenital heart disease underwent S-ICD implant in two centers with the conventional technique. Data at follow-up were retrieved from clinical notes and institutional database. RESULTS Eight patients were implanted in two centres between 2010 and 2016. Median age at implant was 37.5 years(range 13-57). All patients who were deemed suitable for S-ICD implant passed the pre-procedural screening. Three patients were previously implanted with a antibradycardia device, one of whom with CRT. In one patient the device was explanted due to local infection. Duringthe total median follow-up of 874 d, one patient had an appropriate and one inappropriate shock triggered by fast atrial tachycardia. None of the patients had inappropriate shocks secondary to T wave oversensing or electrical interference with anti-bradycardia *** S-ICD appears to be effective and safe in patients with complex congenital heart disease.

The Influence of Climate Change and Variability on Aircraft Take-off and Landing Performance;a Case Study of the Abeid Amani Karume International Airport-Zanzibar

Climate change (CC) and variability have been world widely reported to pose number of risks in aviation industry including accidents, astray, and other operational difficulties. The impact of weather on landing and take-off performances has been several times experienced at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (AAKIA);however, the influence of climate change and variability to the aircraft performance needs to be assessed. Thus, this study investigated the influence of climate change and variability on aircrafts take-off and landing performances. Specifically, the study investigated;i) the influence of climate change on Take-off Distance Required (TODR) and Maximum Take-off Mass (MTOM) for different types of aircraft;ii) the influence of climate variability to the aircraft landing performance on light, medium and heavy aircraft and lastly, iii) the study investigated the seasonal and annual variability on aircraft landing performance due to climate variability. The datasets used in this study include the eight years (2014-2021), aircraft operational records (diversion and missed approach events) and Aviation Routine Weather Reports (METAR) records which were utilized as the indicators for landing performance, the long-term (1990-2020) annual maximum temperatures (Tmax) which was used to determine the TODR and MTOM. Statistical tools including mean, percentage changes, correlations, regression, and the chi-square test were used for analysis and hypotheses testing. The results revealed that light and medium aircraft categories were significantly most affected on diversion events as compared to the heavy categories;however, for the missed approach events the impact was vice versa. Moreover, the seasonal and annual variability on diversion and missed approach events were significantly different (at p ≤ 0.001). Perceived Barriers to Cervical Cancer Screening Using Pap Smear Test among Women Attending Saad Abu Al Ella Hospital in Khartoum State, 2022

Background: Cervical cancer is the second common cancer among women worldwide. It is a preventable cancer, and early detection of precancerous conditions through the Papanicolaou cytology screening (Pap smear) is a key aspect of prevention;it is accepted worldwide as an efficient tool for secondary prevention. While the PS test is simple, inexpensive, and relatively reliable as a method of diagnosing cervical cancer, most women do not take the test. Therefore, this study is sought to describe the barriers to pap smear uptake among Sudanese women. Materials and Method: This total coverage observational, analytical and cross sectional, hospital-based study was conducted in Saad Abu El Ella Hospital in April 2022. The study was conducted using an anonymous questionnaire to assess the perceived barriers of 93 participants. All data were computerized using Microsoft Excel’17 and the data were described and analyzed using statistical package for social science (SPSS23). Results: The findings revealed that the mean age of the participants was 39.5 years and only 3.2% had ever undergone a pap smear test. Identified barriers were lack of information, not knowing where to go, and fear of pain. The majority, 72% are willing to routinely perform a pap smear test if well informed about it. The study also demonstrates that there is a significant correlation between perceived barriers score and willingness to perform the pap smear test (p value = 0.008), and between the perceived barriers score and the sociodemographic factors: Age (p value = 0.006), educational level (p value = 0.028) and occupation (p value = 0.040), but no association with the economic status was found (p value = 0.378). Conclusion: The detection rate is too low compared to the national target of over 70%. Therefore, more work is needed to reduce perceived barriers to cervical cancer screening by providing education/raising for popular awareness;addressing misconceptions and false beliefs;informing women about

The regulatory role of the Micro-RNAs (miRNAs) in the messenger RNAs (mRNAs) gene expression is well understood by the biologists since some decades, even though the delving into specific aspects is in progress. Clustering is a cornerstone in bioinformatics research, offering a potent computational tool for analyzing diverse types of data encountered in genomics and related fields. MiRNA clustering plays a pivotal role in deciphering the intricate regulatory roles of miRNAs in biological systems. It uncovers novel biomarkers for disease diagnosis and prognosis and advances our understanding of gene regulatory networks and pathways implicated in health and disease, as well as drug discovery. Namely, we have implemented clustering procedure to find interrelations among miRNAs within clusters, and their relations to diseases. Deep clustering (DC) algorithms signify a departure from traditional clustering methods towards more sophisticated techniques, that can uncover intricate patterns and relationships within gene expression data. Deep learning (DL) models have shown remarkable success in various domains, and their application in genomics, especially for tasks like clustering, holding immense promise. The deep convolutional clustering procedure used is different from other traditional methods, demonstrating unbiased clustering results. In the paper, we implement the procedure on a Multiple Myeloma miRNA dataset publicly available on GEO platform, as a template of a cancer instance analysis, and hazard some biological issues.
