Lab-on-a-Chip(LoC)devices are extremely promising in that they enable diagnostic functions at the *** this scope,an important goal is to design imaging schemes that can be used out of the *** this paper,we introduce and test a pocket holographic slide that allows digital holography microscopy to be performed without an interferometer ***,a commercial off-the-shelf plastic chip is engineered and functionalized with this *** microfluidic chip is endowed with micro-optics,that is,a diffraction grating and polymeric lenses,to build an interferometer directly on the chip,avoiding the need for a reference arm and external bulky optical *** to the single-beam scheme,the system is completely integrated and robust against vibrations,sharing the useful features of any common path ***,it becomes possible to bring holographic functionalities out of the lab,moving complexity from the external optical apparatus to the chip ***-free imaging and quantitative phase contrast mapping of live samples are demonstrated,along with flexible refocusing ***,a liquid volume can be analyzed in one single shot with no need for mechanical scanning systems.

A randomized double-blind trial on perioperative administration of probiotics in colorectal cancer patients

AIM:To investigate whether probiotic bacteria,given perioperatively,might adhere to the colonic mucosa, reduce concentration of pathogens in stools,and modulate the local immune function. METHODS:A randomized,double-blind clinical trial was carried out in 31 subjects undergoing elective colorectal resection for *** were allocated to receive either a placebo(group A,n=10),or a dose of 10 7 of a mixture of Bifidobacterium longum(BB536) and Lactobacillus johnsonii(La1)(group B,n=11),or the same mixture at a concentration of 10 9 (group C,n=10).Probiotics,or a placebo,were given orally 2 doses/d for 3 d before *** same treatment continued postoperatively from day two to day four. Stools were collected before treatment,during surgery (day 0)and 5 d after *** the operation, colonic mucosa samples were harvested to evaluate bacterial adherence and to assess the phenotype of dendritic cells(DCs)and lymphocyte subsets by surface antigen expression(flow cytometry).The presence of BB536 and La1 was evaluated by the random amplified polymorphism DNA method with specific polymerase chain reaction probes. RESULTS:The three groups were balanced for baseline and surgical ***536 was never found at any time-points *** day 0,La1 was present in 6/10(60%)patients in either stools or by biopsy in group C,in 3/11(27.2%)in group B,and none in the placebo group(P=0.02,C vs A).There was a linear correlation between dose given and number of adher- ent La1(P=0.01).The rate of mucosal colonization by enterobacteriacae was 30%(3/10)in C,81.8%(9/11) in B and 70%(7/10)in A(P=0.03,C vs B).The Enterobacteriacae count in stools was 2.4(log10 scale) in C,4.6 in B,and 4.5 in A(P=0.07,C vs A and B). The appearance of the first laser approximately 12 years after the invention of holography by Gabor(1948)revolutionized the field of optical *** fact,the invention of holographic interferometry enabled the exploitation of interferometry on non-mirror surfaces and full-scale *** holography-based measurement methods has been implemented to several industrial systems or in support of R&D with the aim of improving new products in many fields(automotive,aerospace,electronics,etc.).To date,holography has been considered an important measurement tool for non-destructive inspection(NDI),strain-stress measurement,and vibration analysis at various engineering ***,the new paradigm of Industry4.0 has seen the introduction of new technologies and methods of processing materials as well as the development of manufacturing approaches for the realization of innovative *** example,direct printing,additive,and bottom-up manufacturing processes are expected to involve new ways of making products in future,and most innovative fabrication processes will be based on the manipulation of soft matter(e.g.,starting from the liquid phase)that will be shaped at the *** inherent characteristics of digital holography(DH)make it a powerful and accurate tool for the visualization and testing of final products,as well as for in situ and real-time monitoring and quantitative characterization of the processes involved during the fabrication *** review aims to report on the most useful applications of soft matter,where the capabilities offered by DH,such as three-dimensional(3D)imaging,extended focus,3D tracking,full-field analysis,high sensitivity,and a wide range of measurements from nanometers to centimeters,permit completely non-invasive characterizations on a *** holographic experimental results of typical samples are reported and discussed where DH plays a primary role as a tool gauge for soft matter.
