The burning of fuel oil with high sulfur content in diverse industrial segments results in the generation of oxidized sulfur compounds (SOx). These emissions, directly or indirectly, lead to the deterioration of air quality with consequences including the development of lung diseases in the surrounding population, the generation of acid rain and damage to civil constructions, such as public buildings, public squares, historic monuments, bridges, etc. This article describes the mechanisms of corrosion that occur in reinforced concrete deterioration observed in an industrial plant by the action of direct emissions of sulfur dioxide. SO2 in this case study is from the burning of fuel oil high sulfur content from chimney of an industrial boiler. The deterioration of concrete was evaluated in the laboratory showing the formation of calcium sulfate and calcium sulfate hydrate associated with aluminum oxide (Al2O3) and calcium oxide (CaO).

＜正＞ The expression of COX - 1 increases in rat pheochromocytoma （PC12） cells following differentiation by nerve growth factor （NGF）. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine if NGF affected the expression of prostaglandin E2（ PGF2） receptor subtypes in PC12 cells. We tested the effects of PGE2（EP1 - 4 agonist）, sulprostone （EP3/1 agonist）, ONO- DI - 004 （EP1 agonist）, ONO - AE1 -259 （EP2 agonist）, ONO - AE - 248 （EP3 agonist） and ONO - AE1 - 329 （EP4 agonist）. PC12 cells were culture for 32 h （ ± 50 ng/ml NGF） and [3h] cAMP and [3h]inositol phosphate （[3h]IP） production was assayed in response to 1 μM agonists （ ± 1 μM forskolin）. None of the agonists tested affected [3h] IP production. PGE2 and ONO - AE1 - 259 increased [3h]cAMP in nondifferentiatedcells and ONO - AE1 - 329 was active in NGF - treated cells （P ＜ 0.05）. PGF2, sulprostone and ONO - AE - 248 inhibited forskolin - stimulated [3h] cAMP in undifferentiated cells （P ＜ 0. 01） and this response was attenuated in NGF - treated cells （P ＜ 0.05 for PGE2 and ONO - AE - 248）. In conclusion, the predominant effect of NGF on PC12 cells is to down - regulate the Gi - coupled EP3 receptor subtype.

Background:high-intensity interval training(hIIT)induces similar or even superior adaptations compared to continuous endurance ***,just 6 hIIT sessions over 2 weeks significantly improves maximal oxygen uptake(VO_(2max)),submaximal exercise fat oxidation,and endurance *** even faster adaptations can be achieved with hIIT is not ***,we aimed to determine whether 2 sessions of hIIT per day,separated by 3 h,every other day for 5 days(double hIIT(hIIT-D),n=15)could increase VO_(2max),submaximal exercise fat oxidation,and endurance capacity as effectively as 6 sessions of hIIT over 2 weeks(single hIIT(hIIT-S),n=13).Methods:Each training session consisted of 10×60 s of cycling at 100%of VO_(2max)interspersed with 75 s of low-intensity cycling at 60 watt(W).Pre-and post-training assessments included VO_(2max),time to exhaustion at-80%of VO_(2max),and 60-min cycling trials at-67%of VO_(2max).Results:Similar increases(phIIT-D:7.7%***-S:6.0%,p>0.05)and endurance capacity(hIIT-D:80.1%***-S:79.2%,p>0.05)were *** exercise carbohydrate oxidation was reduced in the 2 groups after exercise training(hIIT-D:9.2%,p=0.014 ***-S:18.8%,p=0.012)while submaximal exercise fat oxidation was significantly increased in hIIT-D(15.5%,p=0.048)but not in hIIT-S(9.3%,p=0.290).Conclusion:Six hIIT sessions over 5 days was as effective in increasing VO_(2max)and endurance capacity and was more effective in improving submaximal exercise fat oxidation than 6 hIIT sessions over 2 weeks.

Background: In patients with HIV, conventional tests are of low sensitivity;therefore, a new diagnostic test with hydrogel nanoparticles with reactive blue dye is proposed, which allows the capture, conservation and concentration of ESAT-6 in urine. NIPAs are copolymers that capture low molecular weight proteins and protect against enzymatic degradation. Using an immunoassay, it is possible to detect and quantify ESAT-6 present in urine as a possible marker of active TB. Design/Methods: Study in Lima, Peru, hIV+ participants, ≥18 years with and without tuberculosis (TB). Smear microscopy, culture in solid medium and urine immunoassay were performed. The reference was the diagnosis of TB by radiological or clinical microbiological criteria (indication for TB treatment). There were 2 preanalytical processes: untreated and treated urine (centrifuged, heated), then incubation with NIPAm. After washing, elution, sonication, heat and centrifugation, the final eluate was obtained. This was placed on nitrocellulose membranes, which by means of fixation and incubation processes with anti-ESAT-6 and anti-IgG antibodies, revelation with C-DiGit® Blot Scanner and FluorChem R FR0001. Calibration curves were included in the membranes, density was measured using Image J software. ROC curves, sensitivity and specificity were obtained. Sublethal Doses of Insecticides Affect the Fecundity and Fertility of the Chrysodeixis includens?

The objective was to determine lethal concentrations and to evaluate the effects of sublethal doses of insecticides on Chrysodeixis includens under laboratory conditions. The standard population of C. includens was kept on artificial diet under controlled conditions (25°C ± 5°C, 60% ± 10 RU, 12:12 h). The active principles used were B. thuringiensis, Indoxacarb and Teflubenzuron. The CL25 and LC50 obtained from dose response curve (estimated from eight concentrations of each active principle) were diluted in water and applied to the back of third instar caterpillars and compared to the control (water). The insecticides used showed lethal and sublethal effects in C. includens. Bacillus thuringiensis was 6.21 and 2.79 times more toxic to soybean looper when compared to the products Indoxacarb and Teflubenzuron, respectively. Insecticides applied to the caterpillars reduced survival and affected the biomass gain with increased larvae and pupae longevity, with a significant reduction in fertility (40%) and fecundity (94.97%) in adults. In the present study it was observed that both survival and larval biomass gain have a direct effect on fecundity and fertility, respectively. Therefore the active ingredients Indoxacarb, Teflubenzuron and B. thuringiensis can be used in rotation as a tool in the C. includens.

This paper presents the earth’s magnetic field variations on quiet days using data from 2011 to 2014 provided by the AMBER station located at the University of Yaoundé 1 (Cameroon), whose geographic and geomagnetic coordinates are respectively: (3.87°N, 11.52°E) and (5.8°S, 83.1°E). The variability of the h horizontal component of the Earth’s magnetic field was examined using the North (X) and East (Y) components of the earth’s magnetic field. The h component is then used to calculate and analyze the diurnal, monthly and seasonal Solar quiet variations Sq (h) observed in Yaoundé-Cameroon during quiet magnetic days. The results obtained show that the Sq (h) variations are seasonal. e.g., in Spring the Sq (h) amplitude (~72 nT) is larger than that of Autumn (~69 nT). The maximum values of Sq (h) vary from 48.8 nT to 57.12 nT in summer and from 41 nT to 60 nT in winter from the years 2011 to 2014. In general, these maximum values are observed around 12:00 and 13:00 in local time. These results show that the morphology of Sq (h) in Yaoundé is presented as a function of seasons. Moreover, the Sq (h) values are negative during morning hours (01:00 - 06:00) and afternoon hours (18:00 - 24:00) in local time throughout all months and all seasons. This significant negative excursion of Sq (h) in Yaoundé during the night time might be due to other physical processes such as storms or thunderclouds or to the existence of a strong induced current in Yaoundé which can affect the ground-based instruments. By referring to the solar cycle 24, our results show that the Sq (h) amplitude varies with the solar activity. The aim of this work is to analyze the diurnal, monthly and seasonal variations of Sq (h) observed in Yaoundé from 2011 to 2014.

Medical School Students’ Knowledge of Pain and Palliative Care: An Observational Study

Background: Pain and palliative care are a reality in daily routines of medical treatment. however, the theoretical-practical curricula of traditional medical school course still unsatisfactorily contemplate pain management, as well as the palliative care approach. Objective: To assess the knowledge of medical students about pain and palliative care, as well as to identify their perception of teaching these topics during hospitalization. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study, with a descriptive and exploratory approach, data collection for which was carried out between August and November 2020. The target population was medical students, who responded to an online survey of a quantitative, anonymous and follow-up nature. The survey study variables concerned knowledge about pain management and palliative care. Results: An expressive majority of academics showed difficulty in understanding the pathophysiology of pain related to prescribing drugs for pain management purposes, and all of them believe that it is necessary to acquire more knowledge about pain treatment. In parallel, only 9.3% report having received sufficient information regarding palliative care during medical school. Conclusion: The results suggest a certain lack of knowledge and insecurity among medical school students with respect to pain management and care for patients receiving palliative care. The didactical approach to this theme is still deficient in the medical curriculum and requires immediate improvement and new proposals that address the training of these professionals in a more specific and effective way.

Antioxidant Effects of Alperujo Extract (Arbequina and Frantoio Varieties) on MIN6 β-Cells Subjected to Stress with Glucose or h2O2

Alperujo, an antioxidant-rich by-product of olive oil extraction, could protect β-cells against oxidative damage. Our goal was to study the antioxidant effects of an alperujo extract (AE) on MIN6 β-cells challenged with glucose or hydrogen peroxide. MIN6 β-cells were challenged with glucose (100 mM) or h2O2 (0.15 mM), with or without AE (20 μM phenol). Reactive oxygen species, intracellular iron (Fe), insulin, glucose uptake, and mRNA gene expression of Uncoupling Protein-2 (UCP-2), Thioredoxin (TRDX), p47phox, and the ratio Bax/Bcl-2 were measured. ROS increased when the stressors were incubated with AE (p hen cells were pre-incubated with AE (p hen cells were pre-incubated with AE for 3 days and then further treated with glucose (p hox, also increased. The Bax/Bcl-2 ratio tended to decrease in the samples pre-incubated with AE. The Alperujo extract,in vitro, had a pro-oxidant behavior, however pre-incubating MIN6 β-cells with AE tended to protect them against apoptosis, thereby enhancing insulin secretion.
