Flowering of Sugarcane Genotypes under Different Artificial Photoperiod Conditions

Flowering is essential in any breeding programme, particularly in genetic introgression programmes in which flowering synchronism is required. In this work, 16 sugarcane genotypes were evaluated using three different flowering-inductive photoperiod treatments (30 s, 45 s, and 1 min of a daily photoperiod decrease from 12 h 55 of light). Each genotype was planted in 43 L pots (equal proportion of soil, sand, and substrate) with three tillers per pot. Plants with 4 to 6 internodes were placed in a photoperiod facility with three controlled chambers, each chamber containing all 16 genotypes (one treatment per chamber). The temperature range (21°C to 32°C) and humidity were the same for all of the treatments. The flower induction started in September 2010 and ended in April 2011. The plant elongation and flag leaf and inflorescence emergence were recorded and the pollen viability was evaluated by using the iodine staining method. The photoperiod facility provided suitable conditions for flowering, as the plants in the three treatments successfully flowered. The genotypes in the three treatments behaved differently in relation to the date of panicle emergence, with the treatment of 45 s showing better results. The results here presented contribute to synchronise flowering for desired sugarcane crosses, particularly those from introgression programmes between commercial cultivars and species from the Saccharum complex.

Organic polymer solar cells （OSCs） and organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells （PSCs） have achieved notable progress over the past several years. A central topic in these fields is exploring electronically efficient, stable and effective hole-transporting layer （hTL） materials. The goal is to enhance hole-collection ability, reduce charge recombination, increase built-in voltage, and hence improve the performance as well as the device stability. Transition metal oxides （TMOs） semiconductors such as NiOx, CuOx, CrOx, MoOx, WO3, and V2O5, have been widely used as hTLs in OSCs. These TMOs are naturally adopted into PSC as hTLs and shows their importance. There are similarities, and also differences in applying TMOs in these two types of main solution processed solar cells. This concise review is on the recent developments of transition metal oxide hTL in OSCs and PSCs. The paper starts from the discussion of the cation valence and electronic structure of the transition metal oxide materials, followed by analyzing the structure-property relationships of these hTLs, which we attempt to give a systematic introduction about the influences of their cation valence, electronic structure, work ftmction and film property on device performance.

A field experiment was conducted for two consecutive years in a farmer's field at haji Mora Village, Dera Ismail Khan (D.I. Khan) in the Northwest Frontier Province (NWPP) of Pakistan to compare various management practices, such as the effect of various organic manures and gypsum in a rice-wheat cropping system on a saline-sodic Entisol (Zindani soil series). The treatments consisted of 1) a control (rice-wheat), 2) gypsum, 3) farmyard manure (FYM), 4) berseem (Trifolium alexzndrinum L.) as green manure (GM), and 5) dhancha (Sesbania sp.) as GM. All treatments increased yields of both rice and wheat significantly (P he control, with the green manure treatments proving more economical than the others; while they decreased ph, electrical conductivity (EC), and sodium adsorption ratio (sar) of the soil. Saturation percentage and available water of the soil were raised for all treatments due to an increase in organic matter content of the soil.

Planktonic bacteria are abundant in the Chukchi Borderland region. however, little is known about their di- versity and the roles of various bacteria in the ocean. Seawater samples were collected from two stations K2S and K4S where sea ice was melting obviously. The analysis of water samples with fluorescence in situ hybridization （FISh） showed that DMSP-degrading bacteria accounted for 13% of the total bacteria at the station K2S. No aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic （AAP） bacteria were detected in both samples. The bacterial communities were characterized by two 16S rRNA gene clone libraries. Sequences fell into four major lineages of the domain Bacteria, including Proteobacteria （Alpha, Beta and Gamma subclasses）, Bac- teroidetes, Actinobacteria and Firmicutes. No significant difference was found between the two clone li- braries. sar11 and Rhodobacteraceae clades of Alphaproteobacteria and Pseudoalteromonas of Gammapro- teobacteria constituted three dominant fractions in the clone libraries. A total of 191 heterotrophic bacterial strains were isolated and 76% showed extracellular proteolytic activity. Phylogenetic analysis reveals that the isolates fell into Gammaproteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria and Firmicutes. The most common genus in both the bacterial isolates and protease-producing bacteria was Pseudoalteromonas. UniFrac data showed suggestive differences in bacterial communities between the Chukchi Borderland and the northern Bering Sea.

Sap mixtures of the xylem, phloem, and vacuoles from low and high Cd accumulator varieties of Brassica parachinensis L. h. Bailey were analyzed under Cd stress to understand the biochemical mechanisms of Cd accumulation in plants. Low Cd accumulator ('Teqing-60') and high Cd accumulator ('Chixin-2') plants were grown in Cd-treated soil in pots in a greenhouse. Percentage of cell wall-bound Cd was estimated. ph level and the concentrations of amino acids, organic acids, anions, and cations in both stem and root saps were determined for the calculation of Cd speciations using the computer program GEOChEM. The results showed that 'Teqing-60' had a significantly higher (P≤0.05) percentage of Cd bound to cell walls in roots and a significantly higher (P≤0.05) ph in the root sap. 'Teqing-60' also contained a higher concentration of total amino acids in both roots and stems compared with the high Cd accumulator variety 'Chixin-2'. however, between the two accumulators, for stems and for roots, there were no significant differences in non-amino organic acids. GEOChEM calculations showed that Cd in the root sap of 'Teqing-60' mainly combined with amino acids, especially alanine. Compared with 'Chixin-2', in the root sap of 'Teqing-60', much lower levels of Cd as free ions or bound to simple ligands were found, indicating that less 'Teqing-60' is transferred to stems and leaves. Cadmium activity in the shoot sap of 'Teqing-60' was much lower than that in 'Chixin-2'; therefore, 'Teqing-60' exhibited higher Cd resistance. however, direct determination of the Cd complexes from xylem and phloem sap is needed to verify these results.
