Reishi Mushroom Attenuates Hepatic Inflammation and Fibrosis Induced by Irradiation Enhanced Carbon Tetrachloride in Rat Model

This work was undertaken to establish a new experimental model of hepatic fibrosis by gamma irradiation and CCl4 and to study the hepatoprotective effect of Reishi Mushroom (RM) against hepatic fibrosis induced in that model. Our results revealed that oral co-administration of 110 mg/kg RM by gavage to fibrotic rats offered an obvious hepatic protection as assured by the significant decrement in ALT and AST, HP content, MDA and NO levels with elevation of the antioxidant enzymes activities. The levels of TGF-β, TNF-α, HO-1 and type-1 collagen and their m-RNA expression were markedly declined as compared with those of fibrotic rats. Microscopical examination revealed that the exposure of rats to radiation aggravated the effect of CCl4 causing extensive collagen deposition and marked pseudolobulation of the hepatic parenchyma indicative of bridging fibrosis. While, oral co-administration of RM obviously improved the state of steatosis and apparently suppressed hepatic fibrogenesis.

Radionuclides naturally occurring in building materials may significantly contribute to the annual doses to the public. For instance, familiar building materials such as the concrete and gypsum board have been reported to produce a dose of about 0.04 mSv per year for a typical person (NCRP 1987c). External as well as internal exposures are two pathways of radiation dose imparted to human beings from the building materials. As information on the radioactivity of such materials is lacking, the study of gypsum materials used in Egypt was carried out in order to estimate the annual dose to the Egyptian population due to natural radionuclides in building materials. During the study, 18 samples of commonly used gypsum raw materials were collected and measured. The activity concentrations were determined by gamma ray spectrometry. Their mean values were in the ranges of 499.29 ± 11.53 Bq·kg-1 for 40K, 91.97 ± 2.61 Bq·kg-1 for 226Ra, 37.62 ± 1.67 Bq·kg-1 for 238U and 42.27 ± 2.22 Bq·kg-1 for 232Th. The activity indexed Iγ for 18, different gypsum samples varied from 0.31 ± 0.03 to 2.3 ± 0.19 and the radium equivalent activity (Raeq), from 38.81 ± 1.68 to 324.7 ± 9.42. These values are lower than the limit of 370 Bq·kg-1 adopted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The average indoor annual effective gamma dose rate (DE) in (mSv/y) for the people, caused by the building materials of dwellings, was assessed for most commonly gypsum materials. It was estimated to be in the range from 0.10 ± 0.003 mSv/y to 0.74 ± 0.08 mSv/y. The internal and external hazard indices (Hin, Hex) and the absorbed dose rate in air D in each sample were evaluated to assess the radiation hazard for people living in dwelling made of the studied materials. The absorbed dose rate of indoor air in samples G1, G2, G11, G17 and G18 is less than the international recommended value which is 55 nGyh-1. In this work, 3% to 8% (in weight) of nanosize MgO particles was added to Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi- 2212) high-temperature superconductor to fab-ricate Bi-2212 superconducting material with superior mechanical properties. The mechanical strength of the samples was studied by con-ducting the compression test at room tempera-ture, and the addition of 5% nanosize MgO par-ticles produced the highest strength when com- pared with other samples. The sample with 5% MgO addition also exhibited superior super-conducting properties. The Bi-2212 powder with 5% nanosize MgO addition was used to fabricate Bi-2212 tapes through the dip-coating-then- stacking method. The fully processed tapes were investigated via dc electrical resistance measurements, XRD patterns, SEM micrographs, transport critical current density and tensile tests. The tensile tests were conducted at room and cryogenic (77 K) temperatures. Results of tensile tests and Young’s modulus for the tapes showed that the Bi-2212 tapes with nanosize MgO addition recorded better mechanical prop-erty compared to the non-added samples both at room and cryogenic temperatures. The double- core tape with 5% MgO addition recorded the highest failure point at 160 MPa. In addition to the strengthening effect that was observed in the nanosize MgO added Bi-2212 superconduc-tor tapes, the superconducting properties re-mained intact in the tapes.

An optical code generating device has been developed based on a 1×2 asymmetric plastic optical fiber （POF） coupler. The code generating device provides a unique series of output power which are successively used as an optical code in a portable optical access-card system. The device utilizing a tap-off ratio （TOFR） technique based on a simple variation of the tap width of an asymmetric Y-branch splitter, allows various ratios of optical power to be generated. The POF coupler has been fabricated using low cost acrylic material and computer numerical control （CNC） machining technique. The simulated and fabricated results show the same linear characteristics between the TOFR and the tap width. The fabricated device enables a variation of the TOFR from 10% up to 50% for a tap width of 500 um to 1 mm.

Objective： Over 50% of the world populations are infected with Helicobacter pylori （H. pylori）. Most subjects are asymptomatic; however, in 1994, H. pylori has been categorized as group I carcinogen. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between H. pylori infection and gastric cancer. Methods： Thirty gastric cancer patients （GCs） and 30 gastritis patients were enrolled in the study. H. pylori was cultured on non-selective and selective medias, infection density was assessed by quantitative culture. Antibiotic sensitivity testing was performed. PCR was done for the H. pylori 16S rRNA gene in addition to cagA, vacA and iceA genes. Results： H. pylori could be cultured from 100% of specimens obtained from all patients. The density of H. pylori was higher in cancer cases than in gastritis patients. The 16S rRNA was detected in all GC patients （100%） while it was only detected in 70% of gastritis patients. The cagA gene was found in 53.3% vs 13.3% of GC and gastritis patients, respectively. The vacA gene was present in all GC patients （by at least one of its alleles） while it was only found in 33.3% of gastritis patients. The vacA slml combination was the most predominant genotype in GC patients, while m2 was the commonest allele in gastritis patients （10%）. The iceA gene was found in 86.7% vs 40% of GC and gastritis patients, respectively. Simultaneous presence of multiple H. pyiori strains was proved, both phenotypically and genotypically. Conclusion： The development of GC is linked to infection with H. pylori harboring certain virulence genes. Higher infection density of H. pylori was found in GC patients. Co-existence of more than one strain of H. pylori in the same patient occurs in both malignant and benign lesions.
