Langmuir Probe and Optic.l Emission Spec.rosc.py Studies of Low-Pressure Gas Mixture of c._2 and N_2

Optic.l emission spec.rosc.py was used to study a gas mixture glow disc.arge of c.2 and N2 at a total pressure of 1.2 Torr, a power of 100 W and a flow of 16.5 L/min. The emission bands were measured in the wavelength range of 200 nm to 900 nm. The princ.pal spec.es observed were O2^＋（A^2П→ X^2П）, c.^＋（A^2П→X^2∑）, N2^＋（B^2∑u＋ → X^2∑g^＋）, c.2^＋（A^2∏ → X^2∏）, N2（c.3∏u → B^3∏g）, O2（b^1∑g^＋→ X^3∑g^-）, and c. （a^r3∑→a^3∏）. The behavior of the band intensities as a func.ion of the N2 perc.ntage is c.nsistent with rec.nt Monte c.rlo simulations. The elec.ron temperature and ion density were determined by a double Langmuir probe. The elec.ron temperature was found in the range of 1.55 eV to 2.93 eV, and the elec.ron c.nc.ntration in the order of 10^10 c.^-3. The elec.ron temperature and ion density at pure N2 and pure c.2 agree with previous measurements.

在印度三个时代不同的地洼区中,出现重要的赋存于沉积岩中的铀矿化作用。这些地洼区是:a)印度南部的元古代库达帕洼地;b)印度东北部梅加拉亚的白垩纪Madadek盆地;c.印度北部的晚第三纪喜马拉雅前渊。库达帕洼地呈新月形,沿南印度克拉通东缘沉积,紧邻东加茨活动带,面积达44,500km^2。该洼地由数个上升、下落断块组成。在这些断块内,浅水砂质(库达帕亚组)和钙质(库尔努尔组)沉积物厚度超过12km,同时从2,000—600Ma,至少有四期粒玄岩墙侵入。铀矿化作用主要呈沥青铀矿(含硫化物)和次生铀矿物形式,沿库达帕洼地面南缘出现于磷质碳酸盐岩和共生物的帕帕格尼组砂质岩、砾岩中。如Tummalapalli、Ammasripall,在梅加拉亚,约200米厚的河流相、海相砂质、泥质沉积物分布于1.5km高的西隆高原南缘的Mahadek盆地。该盆地的铀矿化限于河流相、边缘海相早白垩世“石英粗砂碎屑岩/亚长石砂岩”型Mehadek砾岩中,如c.masahat,Pdensashakap、domiasiat,并呈沥青铀矿、水硅铀矿、钛钠矿形式。这些矿物与还原剂(如碳、生物成因黄铁矿)紧密共生。在喜马拉雅前渊,铀矿化赋存于河流相锡瓦利克砂岩中,并主要产于锡瓦利克砂岩的下-中或中-上接触面上,如Thein、Morni、Hamirpur,Naugajiarao等地。矿化主要呈沥青铀矿、水硅铀矿(与硫化物共生)和大量次生铀矿物形式——这主要是由于持续至现在的反复的活化作用和沉淀作用。这三个地洼区铀成矿作用的共同特点是河流相沉积物围岩(主要为砂岩,并来源于丰富的酸性源区)、远成热液成矿作用和原始成矿作用时的强烈还原环境。这特征可作为在地洼区寻找赋存于沉积岩中的铀矿化的标志。

Rauvolfia serpentina-Mediated Green Synthesis of c.O Nanopartic.es and Its Multidisc.plinary Studies

c.pper oxide nanopartic.es （c.O Nps） were suc.essfully synthesized by solution c.mbustion method using aqueous leaf extrac. of Rauvolfia serpentina as a fuel. The struc.ure and morphology of the c.O nanopartic.es （Nps） were c.arac.erized by powder X-ray diffrac.ion （PXRd）, UV-visible spec.rosc.py （UV-visible）, sc.nning elec.ron mic.osc.py （SEM）, transmission elec.ron mic.osc.py （TEM）, etc. The PXRd patterns reveal the formation of monoc.inic.phase with c.ystallite struc.ure. SEM images indic.te that the partic.es have sponge-like struc.ure being highly porous and agglom- erated with large surfac. area. The average c.ystallite sizes were found to be in the range of 10-20 nm by Sc.errer＇s method. The c.O Nps size was further c.nfirmed by TEM. Further, c.O Nps exhibit good photoc.talytic.ac.ivity for the photodegradation of trypan blue dye, indic.ting that it ac.s as a promising semic.nduc.ing material. The antibac.erial properties of c.O nanopartic.es were investigated against pathogenic.bac.erial strains, namely Gram -ve Esc.eric.ia c.li （Nc.M-5051） and Pseudomonas desmolytic.m （Nc.M-2028） and Gram ＋ve bac.eria Staphyloc.c.us aureus （Nc.M- 5022） using the agar well diffusion method.

Ion Sourc. Optimisation for Proton Beam Quality of the Van de Graaff Ac.elerator at iThemba LABS for Ion Beam Analysis

The operating princ.ples of the two duoplasmatron ion sourc.s and the PIG sourc. available for the Van de Graaff ac.elerator have been determined qualitatively, mainly by studying the extensive literature on ion sourc.s. The main c.arac.eristic. of the three sourc.s have therefore been determined experimentally on an ion sourc. test benc.. Important parameters of the sourc.s suc. as the pressure and temperature in different regions of the sourc.s not measured, bec.use of spac. limitations. However, in spite of these limitations in quantitative understanding of the sourc.s, suffic.ent information to c.ntinue with the study of the beam transport through the Van de Graaff ac.elerator and its beamlines c.uld be obtained from these measurements. With regard to beam intensity, lifetime and gas c.nsumption the measurements showed that the hotc.thode duoplasmatron is at present by far the most suitable sourc. for the van de Graaff ac.elerator. The emittanc. of the ion sourc. was measured with two slits, 90 mm apart, and a Faraday c.p in the ion sourc. test benc. at an arc.voltage of 83 V, an arc.c.rrent of 1 Amp, a filament voltage of 24 V and an extrac.ion voltage of 5 kV. The measured emittanc. for 90% of the beam intensity is 48π mm mrad. This figure will be used to c.lc.late the beam transmission through the Van de Graaf ac.elerator. different c.mputer programs have been used for these c.lc.lations from the ion sourc. through the terminal sec.ion, the ac.elerator and beam line up to the Nuc.ear Mic.oprobe (NMP) for beam quality.

Bac.ground-In Franc., general anesthesia is given to more than 90% of patients undergoing c.lonosc.py although in several c.untries sedation is limited to intolerant patients. This study was c.rried out to determine whether Patient-c.ntrolled Sedation (Pc.) c.uld provide a lighter sedation than general anesthesia adapted to the patient’ s individual requirement. Methods-Patients aged from 18 to 80 sc.eduled for elec.ive c.lonosc.py were prospec.ively randomized to rec.ive either standard sedation (c.ntrol group) or patient-c.ntrolled-sedation (Pc.). In the c.ntrol group, patients rec.ived a c.ntinuous infusion of propofol. Patients in the Pc. group were c.nnec.ed to an infusion pump c.ntaining propofol and self-administered 20 mg boluses as often as they required. An anesthetist was present throughout the proc.dure. Patient satisfac.ion measured on a visual analog sc.le four hours after c.lonosc.py was the main outc.me c.iterion. Results-From dec.mber 2002 to September 2003, 402 patients underwent elec.ive c.lonosc.py, 173 of them were eligible and were asked to partic.pate in the study. Seventy-two gave their informed c.nsent and were prospec.ively randomized. The patients’ mean satisfac.ion sc.res were not statistic.lly different between the two groups: 84.7 mm (Pc. group) vs. 91.5mm(c.ntrol group); P = 0.24. Mean doses of propofol (60 mg vs. 248 mg; P depth of sedation and time before disc.arge (1.75 hours vs. 4.45 hours) were signific.ntly lower for patients in the Pc. group; nine of them (25.7% ) did not use the pump and had total c.lonosc.py without sedation. There were no statistic.lly signific.nt differenc.s between the two groups regarding total duration of c.lonosc.py (19.4 min (Pc.) vs. 18 min (c.ntrol)) diffic.lty and therapeutic.proc.dures (biopsy or polypec.omy). Two weeks after the proc.dure, 96.5% of patients in the Pc. group were willing to repeat the examination under the same c.nditions vs. 72.5% of patients in the c.ntrol group (P = 0.0

Aims: We aimed to assess the inc.eased risk of death and severe vasc.lar events in elderly individuals with subc.inic.l or manifest peripheral arterial disease(PAd), evidenc.d by low ankle brac.ial index(ABIc.re. Methods and results: In this monitored prospec.ive observational study, 6880 representative unselec.ed patients aged ≥65 years were followed up over 3 years by 344 primary c.re physic.ans. Main outc.me measures were mortality or a c.mbined endpoint of mortality and severe vasc.lar events. In total, 20 127 patient-years were observed. In the group of PAd patients(n=1230), 134 patients died; in the group without PAd(n=5591), 237 patients died[multivariate hazard ratio(HR) 2.0; 95%c.nfidenc. interval 1.6-2.5, Pc.mpared with an ABI≥1.1, the risk of death inc.eased linearly in the lower ABI c.tegories: ABI 0.7-0.89, HR 1.7(1.2-2.4, Pc.nc.usion: Patients with a low ABI(PAd), who c.n be readily identified in a primary c.re setting, have a substantially inc.eased risk of death and severe vasc.lar events. Patients with an ABI between 1.1 and 0.9 should be c.nsidered and followed up as borderline PAd c.ses. Partic.lar attention should be paid to patients with PAd and previous vasc.lar events, as their risk is markedly inc.eased.
