Graphene-wrapped Ag3PO4/LaCO3OH heterostructures for water purification under visible light

We demonstrated a unique synthesis approach of graphene（GR）-wrapped AgPO/LaCOOH（APO/LCO）heterostructures by an in-situ wet chemical method. FEsEM analysis reveals the formation of rhombic dodecahedrons of APO decorated with LCO and later wrapped with GR flakes. Optical studies shows two absorption edges corresponding to the band gap energies of APO（2.41 eV） and LCO（4.1 eV）. Considering the absorption edge of the heterostructures in the visible region, the photocatalytic activities of photocatalysts containing different APO/LCO mass ratios were evaluated by the degradation of MB. GR-decorated composite with 20% LCO（APO/LCO20/GR） exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity for MB degradation, with a rate constant, k of 0.541 min. The photocatalytic activity of APO/LCO20/GR more greatly enhanced than those of the individual constituents（APO, LCO, APO/LCO20）. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the heterostructure can be attributed to the co-catalytic effect of LCO as well as intriguing physicochemical properties of GR. To understand the enhanced photocatalytic activity of the heterostructures the photocatalytic reaction mechanism is proposed in detail. The recyclability of the APO/LCO/GR composite photocatalyst is further evaluated by reusing the catalyst in replicate photocatalytic experiments which shows consistent photocatalytic activity thereby confirms the stability and reusability of heterostructure photocatalyst.

Extracellular synthesis of silver nanoparticles using dried leaves of pongamia pinnata(L) pierre

Extract of oven dried leaves of Pongamia pinnata(L) Pierre was used for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles. stable and crystalline silver nanoparticles were formed by the treatment of aqueous solution of AgNO_3(1m M) with dried leaf extract of Pongamia pinnata(L) Pierre. UV-visible spectroscopy studies were carried out to quantify the formation of silver nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to characterize the silver nanoparticles. TEM image divulges that silver nanoparticles are quite polydispersed, the size ranging from 20 nm to 50 nm with an average of 38 nm. Water soluble heterocyclic compounds such as flavones were mainly responsible for the reduction and stabilization of the nanoparticles. silver nanoparticles were effective against Escherichia coli(ATCC 8739), staphylococcus aureus(ATCC 6538p), Pseudomonas aeruginosa(ATCC 9027) and Klebsiella pneumoniae(clinical isolate). The move towards extracellular synthesis using dried biomass appears to be cost effective, eco-friendly to the conventional methods of nanoparticles synthesis.

Removal of Bi(Ⅲ) with Adsorption Technique Using Coconut shell Activated Carbon

In present study,we report the preparation of coconut shell activated carbon as adsorbent and its appli-cation for Bi(Ⅲ) removal from aqueous *** developed adsorbent was characterized with scanning elec-tron microscope(sEM),Fourier Transform Infrared(FTIR),C,H,N,s analyzer,and BET surface area *** parameters examined include agitation time,initial concentration of Bi(Ⅲ),adsorbent dose and *** maximum adsorption of Bi(Ⅲ)(98.72%) was observed at 250 mg·L-1 of Bi(Ⅲ) and adsorbent dose of 0.7 g when agitation was at 160 r·min-1 for 240 min at(299±2) *** thermodynamic parameters such as Gibb's free energy(△Gθ),enthalpy(△Hθ) and entropy(△sθ) were *** the isotherm models applied to adsorption study,the Langmuir isotherm model fits better than the Freundlich *** maximum adsorption capacity from the Langmuir isotherm was 54.35 mg?g?1 of Bi(Ⅲ).The kinetic study of the adsorption shows that the pseudo second order model is more appropriate than the pseudo first order *** result shows that,coconut shell ac-tivated carbon is an effective adsorbent to remove Bi(Ⅲ) from aqueous solutions with good adsorption capacity.

High viscosity of ionic liquids causes rate retardation of Diels-Alder reactions

second order rate constants, ka have been determined for three bi-molecular Diels-Alder reactions to demonstrate that the high viscosity of ionic liquids can be a detrimental property in carrying out Diels-Alder reactions, if ionic liquids are employed as solvent media. It is possible to enhance the reaction rates of the reaction if a co-solvent is mixed in pure ionic liquid used as a solvent.

Effects of Disturbance Intensities on Vegetation Patterns in Oak Forests of Kumaun,West Himalaya

In order to realize the significance of oak forests for ecology and economy of the Himalayan region,the present study attempts to objectively characterize disturbance intensities and their impacts on compositional features of identified Oak forests, ***-oak(Quercus leucotrichophora ***), Tilonj-oak(*** Lindley)and Kharsu-oak(Q. semecarpifolia ***)in west Himalaya. Amongst studied forests,*** and Q. semecarpifolia forests exhibited high sensitivity towards disturbance *** both forests, increasing level of disturbance significantly lowered tree density,dominance and natural recruitment (seedling and sapling density).*** forests, however,appeared relatively more resilient to anthropogenic *** studied oak forests,*** forests with overall poor natural regeneration are in a most critically endangered demographic ***,a slightly improved regeneration(i.e.,seedling density)in moderately disturbed plots is indicative that such plots may be utilized most suitably for in situ revival of these *** of disturbance intensities on tree population is an important subject for forest ecology and management and the present study highlights a need for adopting different management strategies across disturbance intensities in diverse oak forests of west Himalaya.

Assessing Conservation Values of Forest Communities in Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve: Plant Diversity, species Distribution and Endemicity

Present study has been conducted in a biodiversity rich Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve between 2000-3800 m in two different forest physiognomy holding sites to analyze the structure and composition of the forest communities including richness of native, non native and endemic species,and suggest conservation values at community and reserve level.A total of 60 sites were sampled and grouped in 11 and 8 communities for two representative sites Pindari-sunderdhunga-Kafni(PsK) and Lata-Tolma-Phagti(LTP) *** the sampled sites, 451 species(11.8%, 53 trees;17.71%, 80 shrubs; and 70.51%, 318 herbs) have been *** general, PsK site represented 73.6% and LTP site represented only 54.9% of the total plant species recorded in the study *** of total species in PsK site, native species contributed 59.6%(198spp.) and 24.7% species were endemic and near *** LTP site, 66.5% species were Himalayan natives and 33.5% were endemic and near *** species richness ranged from 4-23 ind ha-1(tree),3-18 ind ha-1(sapling), 5-19 ind ha-1(seedling) in PsK site and 4-18 ind ha-1(tree), 4-11 ind ha-1(sapling), 4-16 ind ha-1(seedling) in LTP *** density ranged from 260-535 ind ha-1(tree), 145-633 ind ha-1(sapling), 1450-8170 ind ha-1(seedling) in PsK site and 599-1211 ind ha-1(tree), 70-951 ind ha-1(sapling),470-1665 ind ha-1(seedling) in LTP *** diversity for trees ranged from 0.73-3.37, saplings,0.64-2.67, seedlings, 0.70-2.51, shrubs, 1-2.34 and herbs, 2.02-3.21 in PsK site and 0.63-1.61, saplings,0.76-1.36, seedlings, 0.35-1.79, shrubs, 0.98-2.73 and herbs, 2.48-3.61 in LTP *** recorded values were almost comparable with the studies conducted in sub-tropical, temperate and sub-alpine regions of the west *** some cases the values were slightly higher than the reported *** important communities with high conservation values have been identified based on different ecological parameters and species *** all the

A simplified approach to assess seismic stability of tailings dams

In the zones of high seismic activity, tailings dam should be assessed for the stability against earthquake forces. In the present paper, a simplified method is proposed to compute the factor of safety of tailings dams. The strain-dependent dynamic properties are used to assess the stability of tailings dams under seismic conditions. The effect of foundation soil properties on the seismic stability of tailings dams is studied using the proposed method. For the given input parameters, the factor of safety for lowfrequency input motions is nearly 26% lower than that for high-frequency input excitations. The impedance ratio and the depth of foundation have significant effect on the seismic factor of safety of tailings dams. The results from the proposed method are well compared with the existing pseudo-static method of analysis. Tailings dams are vulnerable to damage for low-frequency input motions.

Experimental investigation on mechanical properties of binary and ternary blended pervious concrete

The purpose of the investigation was to study the effect of binary and ternary blends of cement on the mechanical properties of pervious concrete(PC)specimen through destructive(DT)and non-destructive testing(NDT).Various combinations of fly ash(FA),limestone powder(LP),metakaolin(MK),and silica fume(sF)as mineral admixtures have been investigated to partially replace the cement up to 30%by weight in *** cube specimens of size 150 mm×150 mm×150 mm of binary and ternary blends of mineral admixture of pervious concrete were prepared to conduct standard compressive strength test and split tensile test at 7 and 28 days of *** ultrasonic pulse velocity(UPV)test and Rebound Hammer test were used as a non-destructive testing tool to substantiate the robustness of PC and to determine the approximate mechanical properties where other destructive testing tools are not feasible in case of inplace pervious *** the pervious concrete made with LP based ternary blends(PLM and PLs)were found to perform better than FA based ternary blends(PFM and PFs)and control mix(PC)in destructive and non-destructive testing.
