An Ecological Assessment of Critically Endangered Chinese Pangolin Manis pentadactyla(Mammalia: Pholidota: Manidae) in the Midhills Region of Nepal

The Chinese Pangolin (Manis pentadactyla) is a “Critically Endangered” insectivorous mammal. There is a lack of information on the ecology, distribution and behavior of this species in Nepal, even though community forests in the Midhills Region of Nepal are considered to be prime habitats for the species. We conducted an ecological assessment of the habitat use of this species in nine community forests covering an area of 170.69 ha in Balthali village in Kavrepalanchok district, Nepal. We divided each forest into 50 × 50 m grids and searched for Chinese Pangolin burrows along 50 m transects in each grid. We categorized burrows into two types, new and old burrows, and recorded 10 environmental variables for each burrow. We found a total of 542 burrows, including 323 old burrows and 219 new burrows. The average width and height of a burrow opening was 21.66 ± 3.94 cm (n = 542) and 22.42 ± 5.02 cm (n = 542). The total density of burrows in the study area was 3.1 ha−1, with new burrows density of 1.2 ha−1 and old burrows density of 1.8 ha−1. We found most burrows in sites with an elevation range of 1400 - 1500 m above sea level, gentle slopes, brown colored soil, high density of tree crown cover and undergrowth vegetation, southern exposure, within 150 m from a water source and less than 200 m from a human settlement. Our study has generated baseline data on the habitat use of Chinese Pangolin, which we hope will help in designing site-specific action plans for Chinese Pangolin conservation in Kavrepalanchok district, Nepal.

Population Structure and Marker-Trait Association in Indigenous Aromatic Rice

Joha rice of Assam is a class of rice with aroma, good cooking qualities and excellent palatability, which are grown in different places of Assam with their adaptability to local situations. A total of 143 simple sequence repeat markers were used in this study to reveal sufficient genetic variations among the 40 Joha and 14 non-Joha rice genotypes. Polymorphism information content of these markers were from 0.17 to 0.88, where the average of 3.7 alleles were observed. The model-based population assignment and dendrogram analysis identified three distinct groups in the 54 rice accessions, which established a clear identity of Joha accessions from the Basmati accessions, indicating high diversity and strong population structure in Joha rice. Furthermore, a total of 29 significant marker-trait associations(P < 0.05) for 10 characters were detected. The QTLs related with yield and grain quality can be used effectively in crop improvement programs and for further fine mapping and validation of specific genes to develop gene-based perfect markers in rice breeding and for mining of better alleles of these genes in Joha rice collections.

Comparison of Ruin Probabilities in Compound Poisson Risk Model

Compound Poisson risk model has been simulated. It has started with exponential claim sizes. The simulations have checked for infinite ruin probabilities. An appropriate time window has been chosen to estimate and compare ruin probabilities. The infinite ruin probabilities of two-compound Poisson risk process have estimated and compared them with standard theoretical results.

Assessment of Phytochemical, Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activities of Some Medicinal Plants from Kaski District of Nepal

Medicinal plants have been known to treat simple to life-threatening diseases in different communities of Nepal for many years. This study aims to analyze the phytochemicals as plant secondary metabolites, evaluate the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of Rubus ellipticus, Ziziphus mauritiana, Pyrus pashia, and Drynaria coronans extracts that are commonly being used as traditional medicine. Phytochemical analysis was performed to investigate the plant’s secondary metabolites such as polyphenols, alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, reducing sugar, glycosides, tannins, carotene, phytosterols, coumarins, saponins, and anthracenes. Structural, Magnetic, and Electrical Properties of RE Doped Sr0.82RE0.18Fe12-xAlxO19(RE = Gd, Pr, Sm) Compound

Among the family of ferrites, M-type hexaferrites has many industrial applications ranging from simple magnets to microwave devices. Improvement in magnetic and dielectric properties of ferrites is of continuous interest. In this present work details study is done to observe the effect of co-doping of rare-earth (RE3+: Pr3+, Sm3+, and Gd3+) and aluminum in Sr0.82RE0.18Fe12-xAlxO19 (x = 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0). The adopted samples were synthesized via autocombustion technique. Detailed synthesis, structural, magnetic, and electrical measurements of samples were performed to understand structural-magnetic-electrical property relationship. The Al3+ substitution for Fe3+ brings in a significant enhancement in coercivity but reduces magnetization due to the magnetic dilution effect. Additional coercivity enhancement was possible with RE3+ doping without affecting the magnetization of samples. Among all RE3+ doped samples, Pr3+ doped samples showed the highest Curie temperature, (Tc ~ 465℃), while Gd3+ doped samples showed little variation in dielectric properties in GHz frequency range. This makes RE3+ doped samples as an ideal candidate for high-frequency microwave applications. Pr3+ with oblate charge distribution (negative Stevens constant) was observed to substitute well into the lattice consequently bringing in desired improvements in physical properties of Sr0.82RE0.18Fe12-xAlxO19 ferrite.

Genetic Diversity of Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan(L.) Millsp.) Cultivars and Its Wild Relatives Using Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) Markers

Genetic diversity among and between 16 cultivars of pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L) Millsp.) and its wild relatives (C. albicans and C. lineatus) analysed using RAPD. Twenty two random primers with an average of 71.2% polymorphism produced 151 polymorphic bands. Cluster analysis based on these 151 RAPD markers revealed relatively low level (0.434 - 0.714) of genetic diversity among cultivars and high level of diversity between cultivars and wild relatives. C. albicans and C. lineatus showed only 0.231 similarity with each other and C. albicans showed relatively higher similarity with C. cajan cultivars than that showed by C. lineatus. In dendrogram the 16 cultivars grouped into two distinct clusters comprising of seven and nine genotypes each while the wild species form out groups. Bootstrap analysis of the dendrogram was performed and resulted in significant bootstrap values. Principal components analysis (PCA) also revealed the similar results that of unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA). The first, second and third PCs contributed 55.9%, 5.9%, and 5.6% of the variation, respectively, with cumulative variation of the first three PCs was 67.4%.

Comparative Analysis of Genetic Diversity among Cultivated Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan(L) Millsp.) and Its Wild Relatives (C. albicansand C. lineatus) Using Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) Fingerprinting

Genetic relationships of 16 cultivars of pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L) Millsp.) and its two wild relatives (C. albicans and C. lineatus) from different parts of the India were analysed using 22 random amplified polymorphic DNAs (RAPDs) primers and 10 inter simple sequence repeats (ISSRs) primers. Twenty two RAPD primers yielded 151 polymorphic markers (71.2%) with an average of 6.8 polymorphic band/primer. Cluster analysis based on these 151 RAPD markers revealed relatively low level (0.434 - 0.714) of genetic diversity among cultivars and high level of diversity between cultivars and wild relatives. Ten ISSR primers produced 100 bands across 16 cultivars and its wild relatives out of which 93 (93%) were polymorphic with an average of 9.3 polymorphic band/primer. Cluster analysis based on these 93 ISSR markers also revealed relatively higher level (0.328 - 0.827) of genetic diversity among cultivars as compared to RAPD markers. The polymorphic markers obtained by both RAPD and ISSR primers were pooled and the genetic diversity analysis based on these 244 markers was analysed. Jaccard’s similarity coefficient obtained by pooled data revealed very narrow range (0.477 - 0.720) among cultivated and high range between cultivated and wild species C. albicans (0.240 - 0.331) and C. lineatus (0.163 - 0.193). In the UPGMA based dendrogram the 16 cultivars were grouped into three distinct clusters. Cluster I contained two genotypes, cluster II had six and cluster III had eight genotypes. Principal components analysis (PCA) also resulted in similar pattern as that of UPGMA based analysis. The first three PCs contributed 56.26%, 5.71% and 4.97% of variation, respectively, with cumulative variation of the first three PCs was 66.96%. Role of Helicobacter pylori in gastric cancer:Updates

Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) infection is highly prevalent in human,affecting nearly half of the world's population; however,infection remains asymptomatic in majority of population. During its co-existence with humans,H. pylori has evolved various strategies to maintain a mild gastritis and limit the immune response of host. On the other side,presence of *** is also associated with increased risk for the development of various gastric pathologies including gastric cancer(GC). A complex combination of host genetics,environmental agents,and bacterial virulence factors are considered to determine the susceptibility as well as the severity of outcome in a subset of individuals. GC is one of the most common cancers and considered as the third most common cause of cancer related death worldwide. Many studies had proved H. pylori as an important risk factor in the development of non-cardia GC. Although both H. pylori infection and GC are showing decreasing trends in the developed world,they still remain a major threat to human population in the developing countries. The current review attempts to highlight recent progress in the field of research on H. pylori induced GC and aims to provide brief insight into H. pylori pathogenesis,the role of major virulence factors of H. pylori that modulates the host environment and transform the normal gastric epithelium to neoplastic one. This review also emphasizes on the mechanistic understanding of how colonization and various virulence attributes of H. pylori as well as the host innate and adaptive immune responses modulate the diverse signaling pathways that leads to different disease outcomes including GC.

Polymorphism of -765G > C COX-2 is a risk factor for gastric adenocarcinoma and peptic ulcer disease in addition to H pylori infection:A study from northern India

AIM: To investigate -765G > C COX-2 polymorphism and H pylori infection in patients with gastric adenocarcinoma, peptic ulcer disease (PUD) and non- ulcer dyspepsia (NUD). METHODS: We enrolled 348 adult patients (62 gastric adenocarcinoma, 45 PUD and 241 NUD) undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy at two referral centers between September, 2002 and May, 2007. H pylori infection was diagnosed when any of the four tests (RUT, culture, histopathology and PCR) were positive. Genotyping for -765G > C polymorphism of COX-2 was performed by PCR-RFLP analysis. RESULTS: Frequency of C carrier had significantassociation with gastric adenocarcinoma as compared to NUD [77.4% vs 29%, P C COX-2 polymorphism with or without H pylori could be a marker for genetic susceptibility to gastric adenocarcinoma. COX-2 polymorphism in presence of H pylori infection might be useful in predicting the risk of PUD.
