Swallowing of Casson fluid in oesophagus under the influence of peristaltic waves of varying amplitude

The experimentally verified fact that there is a high pressure zone in the lower part of the oesophagus has established that the earlier models fall short of representing the realistic swallowing process in the oesophagus. Since the high pressure is created by gradually increasing amplitudes of peristaltic waves, swallowing of Casson fluid in oesophagus is mathematically remodeled. It is revealed that in the case of exponentially increasing amplitude, pressure is non-uniformly distributed for different cycles. Pressure increases along the entire length of the oesophagus; and finally toward the end of the oesophageal flow, it increases quite significantly, probably to ensure delivery into the stomach. This is a similar observation for Newtonian as well as non-Newtonian fluids but Casson fluids need more pressure; and hence more efforts are required by the oesophagus to transport the fluid forward. When wave amplitude is small, flow rates are small. In such a case, Casson fluid requires higher flow rates for reflux to occur in comparison to Newtonian fluid. This tendency gradually diminishes with increasing amplitude. For a particular value of amplitude, there is no difference; and beyond that the trends are quite opposite. Thus, Casson fluid is found to be less prone to reflux near the wall. It is also concluded that for the Newtonian fluid as well as for the non-Newtonian Casson fluid, reflux is more likely to occur with increasing amplitude and it is further augmented by the addition of amplifying parameter.

The ever-increasing demand for light weighted hard materials for transportation industries encouraged researchers to develop composites with excellent mechanical properties which can transform it into more economical and *** the metals with carbonaceous nanomaterials are progressively in focus due to their excellent capability to inculcate and tailor the properties of *** the present research,a hybrid nanocomposite of MWCNT-Graphene-AZ31 Mg alloy has been developed by using variable tool rotation speeds with friction stir processing(FSP).Optimized reinforcement ratio of 1.6%*** and 0.3%*** graphene have been used with variable tool rotation speeds,whereas other processing parameters are kept *** developed specimens were investigated using standard testing equipment for evaluating and comparing the mechanical properties on the basis of the microstructure of the processing regions and their morphological analysis,according to the ASTM *** obtained results revealed an improvement of 19.72%in microhardness and 77.5% of compressive strength in comparison with the base metal AZ 31 Magnesium alloy,with a tool rotational speed of *** values of tensile stress and percentage area reduction were recorded as less than that of the base metal matrix,but an increasing trend has been observed in the values of both with the improvement on rotational speeds of the *** effectual strengthening mechanisms are analyzed on the bases of SEM images and observed that discussed and found that grain refinement strengthening is the major contributor to the strength of the nanocomposite.

In order to realize the significance of oak forests for ecology and economy of the Himalayan region,the present study attempts to objectively characterize disturbance intensities and their impacts on compositional features of identified Oak forests, ***-oak(Quercus leucotrichophora ***), Tilonj-oak(*** Lindley)and Kharsu-oak(Q. semecarpifolia ***)in west Himalaya. Amongst studied forests,*** and Q. semecarpifolia forests exhibited high sensitivity towards disturbance *** both forests, increasing level of disturbance significantly lowered tree density,dominance and natural recruitment (seedling and sapling density).*** forests, however,appeared relatively more resilient to anthropogenic *** studied oak forests,*** forests with overall poor natural regeneration are in a most critically endangered demographic ***,a slightly improved regeneration(i.e.,seedling density)in moderately disturbed plots is indicative that such plots may be utilized most suitably for in situ revival of these *** of disturbance intensities on tree population is an important subject for forest ecology and management and the present study highlights a need for adopting different management strategies across disturbance intensities in diverse oak forests of west Himalaya.

Analytical expressions for determining the stability of cohesionless soil slope under generalized seismic conditions

In recent major earthquakes, the researchers have found the need for consideration of vertical seismic acceleration for the stability analysis of the man-made and natural slopes. However, in most past studies, the performance of slopes has been assessed by accounting only the horizontal seismic component of the ground motion, without giving due weightage to the effect of vertical component. In the present study, analytical expressions are derived to determine the factor of safety, yield seismic coefficient and consequently the seismic displacement of cohesionless soil slope under combined horizontal and vertical components of the ground motion. The derivation uses the Newmark's sliding block approach, in which the soil slope with a planar failure surface within the framework of conventional pseudo-static analysis is assumed to follow the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The effects of vertical seismic coefficient on the stability of cohesionless slope have been studied through a set of graphical presentations for a specific range of soil parameters. It is observed that overlooking the effect of the vertical component of the ground motion on factor of safety and the displacement while designing the slope may be detrimental, resulting in the slope failure. The general expressions presented in this paper may be highly useful in the field of earthquake geotechnical engineering practice for designing the cohesionless soil slopes under combined horizontal and vertical seismic loads.

Assessing Conservation Values of Forest Communities in Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve: Plant Diversity, Species Distribution and Endemicity

Present study has been conducted in a biodiversity rich Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve between 2000-3800 m in two different forest physiognomy holding sites to analyze the structure and composition of the forest communities including richness of native, non native and endemic species,and suggest conservation values at community and reserve level.A total of 60 sites were sampled and grouped in 11 and 8 communities for two representative sites Pindari-Sunderdhunga-Kafni(PSK) and Lata-Tolma-Phagti(LTP) *** the sampled sites, 451 species(11.8%, 53 trees;17.71%, 80 shrubs; and 70.51%, 318 herbs) have been *** general, PSK site represented 73.6% and LTP site represented only 54.9% of the total plant species recorded in the study *** of total species in PSK site, native species contributed 59.6%(198spp.) and 24.7% species were endemic and near *** LTP site, 66.5% species were Himalayan natives and 33.5% were endemic and near *** species richness ranged from 4-23 ind ha-1(tree),3-18 ind ha-1(sapling), 5-19 ind ha-1(seedling) in PSK site and 4-18 ind ha-1(tree), 4-11 ind ha-1(sapling), 4-16 ind ha-1(seedling) in LTP *** density ranged from 260-535 ind ha-1(tree), 145-633 ind ha-1(sapling), 1450-8170 ind ha-1(seedling) in PSK site and 599-1211 ind ha-1(tree), 70-951 ind ha-1(sapling),470-1665 ind ha-1(seedling) in LTP *** diversity for trees ranged from 0.73-3.37, saplings,0.64-2.67, seedlings, 0.70-2.51, shrubs, 1-2.34 and herbs, 2.02-3.21 in PSK site and 0.63-1.61, saplings,0.76-1.36, seedlings, 0.35-1.79, shrubs, 0.98-2.73 and herbs, 2.48-3.61 in LTP *** recorded values were almost comparable with the studies conducted in sub-tropical, temperate and sub-alpine regions of the west *** some cases the values were slightly higher than the reported *** important communities with high conservation values have been identified based on different ecological parameters and species *** all the
