Iron Deficiency among Blood Donors in Sokoto, North Western, Nigeria

Objectives: There is a paucity of information on the prevalence of iron deficiency among blood donors in Sokoto, North Western, Nigeria. The present study was, therefore, designed to investigate the prevalence and socio-demographic factors associated with iron deficiency among blood donors in Sokoto, North Western, Nigeria using a combination of haemoglobin haematocrit and serum ferritin measurements. Materials and methods: One hundred and fifty consecutively recruited whole blood donors, comprising of 148 (98.7%) family replacement donors and 2 (1.3%) voluntary non-remunerated donors, 145 male (96.7%) and 5 (3.33%) female blood donors aged 18 - 60 years with mean age 39 ±?21 years constituted the subjects for this study. Subjects included farmers 55 (43.3%), 56 civil servants (37.3%) and 39 (26%) students. The full blood count was carried out using Mythic 22 CT fully automated haematology analyser (Orphee SA, Switzerland). Serum was tested for ferritin using a human ferritin enzyme immunoassay kit—ACCU DiagTM ELISA Ferritin kit (Diagnostic Automation/Cortez Diagnostic Inc. California (U.S.A). Result: Three haematological parameters (haemoglobin, packed cell volume and serum ferritin) were assessed among blood donors. The haemoglobin, packed cell volume and ferritin levels were significantly lower among regular voluntary remunerated blood donors (13.5 ±?0.00, 43.5 ±?2.0 and 34.88 ±?0.00) compared to Family replacement donors (14.10 ±?.40, 45 ±?3.0 and 74.12 ±?45.20) respectively (p =?0.01, 0.01 and 0.001 respectively). The mean haemoglobin, packed cell volume and ferritin levels were compared among donors based on gender. The haemoglobin, packed cell volume and ferritin were significantly higher among male donors (14.2 ±?2.0, 44 ±?4.0 and 78.02 ±?49.10) compared to female donors (12.35 ±?2.5, 42 ±?3.0 and 42.2 ±?32.13) (p =?0.01, 0.01 and 0.001 respectively). Analysis of optoelectronic properties of TiO_2 nanowiers/Si heterojunction arrays

The optoelectronic properties of n-TiO2NW/p-Si heterojunction fabricated by depositing TiO2 nanowires on a p-Si substrate are studied. Under excitation at a wavelength of 370 nm, the TiO2 nanowires produce a light emission at 435 nm due to the emission of free excitons. The I-V characteristics are measured to investigate the heterojunction effects under the dark environment and ultraviolet （UV） illumination, n-TiOzNW/p-Si has a p-n junction formed in the n-TiOz/p-Si beterojunction. TiO2NW/Si photodiode produces a pbotocurrent larger than dark current under UV illumination. It is observed that UV photons are absorbed in TiO2 and the heterojunction shows a 0.034-A/W responsivity at 4-V reverse bias.

Performance evaluation of laterite soil embankment stabilized with bottom ash,coir fiber,and lime

In tropical regions,heavy rainfall induces erosion and shallow landslides on road ***-based stabilization methods,common in these regions,contribute to climate change due to their high carbon *** study explored the potential application of coir fiber-reinforced laterite soil-bottom ash mixtures as embankment materials in the *** objective is to enhance engineered embankment slopes'erosion resistance and stability while offering reuse options for industrial *** study examined various mix designs for unconfined compressive strength(UCS)and permeability,utilizing 30%bottom ash(BA)and 1%coir fiber(CF)with varying sizes ranging from 10 to 40 mm,6%lime,and laterite soil(LS),followed by microstructural *** results demonstrate that the compressive strength increases as the CF length increases to 25 *** contrast,permeability increases continuously with increasing CF ***-treated mixtures exhibit superior short-and long-term strength and reduce permeability owing to the formation of cementitious materials,as confirmed by microstructural analyses.A lab-scale slope box was constructed to evaluate the surface erosion of the stabilized laterite soil *** on the rainfall simulation results,the LS-BA-CF mixtures show better resistance to erosion and deformation compared to untreated LS,especially when lime is added to the top *** study provides insights into a sustainable and cost-effective approach for slope stabilization using BA and CF,offering a promising solution for tropical regions susceptible to surface erosion and landslides.

Enhanced two-loop model predictive control design for linear uncertain systems

Model predictive controllers(MPC)with the two-loop scheme are successful approaches practically and can be classified into two main categories,tube-based MPC and MPCbased reference governors(RG).In this paper,an enhanced twoloop MPC design is proposed for a pre-stabilized system with the bounded uncertainty subject to the input and state *** proposed method offers less conservatism than the tube-based MPC methods by enlarging the restricted input *** to the MPC-based RGs,the investigated method improves tracking performance of the pre-stabilized system while satisfying the ***,the robust global asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is guaranteed in a novel procedure with terminal constraint *** of the proposed method on a servo system shows its effectiveness in comparison to the others.

Using Syntactic-Based Kernels for Classifying Temporal Relations

Temporal relation classification is one of contemporary demanding tasks of natural language processing. This task can be used in various applications such as question answering, summarization, and language specific information retrieval. In this paper, we propose an improved algorithm for classifying temporal relations, between events or between events and time, using support vector machines （SVM）. Along with gold-standard corpus features, the proposed method aims at exploiting some useful automatically generated syntactic features to improve the accuracy of classification. Accordingly, a number of novel kernel functions are introduced and evaluated. Our evaluations clearly demonstrate that adding syntactic features results in a considerable improvement over the state-of-the-art method of classifying temporal relations.

The aim of this study is to develop processing maps based on two models and compare them with conventional processing *** hyperbolic sinus constitutive equation and artificial neural network(ANN)approaches were used in this investigation to predict flow stress and to develop processing maps in various *** hot compression tests of InX-750 superalloy were carried out above the gamma prime phase temperature and within the temperature range of 1000-1150℃and strain rate of 0.001-1.000 s^(-1).The processing maps were conducted based upon dynamic material model(DMM)for data by experimental,constitutive equation and ANN *** processing maps drawn by either of the prediction methods show that the method developed by ANN data does not significantly differ from the experimental processing *** ANN approach is thus a suitable way to predict the flow stress as well as hot working processing map of engineering metals and materials.

Optimization of Sentiment Analysis Using Teaching-Learning Based Algorithm

Feature selection and sentiment analysis are two common studies that are currently being conducted;consistent with the advancements in computing and growing the use of social *** dimensional or large feature sets is a key issue in sentiment analysis as it can decrease the accuracy of sentiment classification and make it difficult to obtain the optimal subset of the ***,most reviews from social media carry a lot of noise and irrelevant ***,this study proposes a new text-feature selection method that uses a combination of rough set theory(RST)and teaching-learning based optimization(TLBO),which is known as *** framework to develop the proposed RSTLBO includes numerous stages:(1)acquiring the standard datasets(user reviews of six major ***)which are used to validate search result feature selection methods,(2)preprocessing of the dataset using text processing *** involves applying text processing methods from natural language processing techniques,combined with linguistic processing techniques to produce high classification results,(3)employing the RSTLBO method,and(4)using the selected features from the previous process for sentiment classification using the Support Vector Machine(SVM)*** show an improvement in sentiment analysis when combining natural language processing with linguistic processing for text *** importantly,the proposed RSTLBO feature selection algorithm is able to produce an improved sentiment analysis.

Analysing free way diverging risks using high-resolution trajectory data based on conflict prediction models

This study aims to develop a reliable safety evaluation model for diverging vehicles and investigates the impact of the surrounding traffic environment on freeway diverging ***-resolution trajectory data from three sites in the Netherlands(Delft,Ter-Heide and Zonzeel)were employed for the risk *** regression(LR),support vector machine(SVM),random forest(RF),extreme randomize trees(ET),adaptive boosting(Adaboost),extreme gradient boosting(XGboost)and multilayer perceptron(MLP),were developed for safety *** result showed that MLP outperforms the other models for diverging risk prediction over all the indicators,conflict thresholds and *** matrix,shapely addictive explanation(SHAP),and LR algorithms were further adopted to interpret the influence of the surrounding *** indicates that an increase in traffic density,subject vehicle(SV)lateral speed,the distance of SV from ramp nose and SV length would increase the diverging *** the same time,an increase in leading vehicle speed and space headway would decrease diverging ***,spatial analysis was also conducted to explore the stability of identified traffic features regarding the impact on the diverging risk across the sites.

Investigation on the homogenization treatment and element segregation on the microstructure of a γ/γ′-cobalt-based superalloy

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of element segregation on the microstructure and γ′ phase in a γ/γ′ cobalt-based superalloy. Several samples were prepared from a cast alloy and homogenized at 1300°C for different times, with a maximum of 24 h. A microstructural study of the cast alloy using wavelength-dispersive spectroscopic analysis revealed that elements such as Al, Ti, and Ni segregated mostly within interdendritic regions, whereas W atoms were segregated within dendrite cores. With an increase in homogenization time, segregation decreased and the initial dendritic structure was eliminated. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy micrographs showed that the γ′ phases in the cores and interdendritic regions of the as-cast alloy were 392 and 124 nm, respectively. The size difference of γ′ was found to be due to the different segregation behaviors of constituent elements during solidification. After homogenization, particularly after 16 h, segregation decreased; thus, the size, chemical composition, and hardness of the precipitated γ′ phase was mostly uniform throughout the samples.
