Assimilating OSTIA SST into regional modeling systems for the Yellow Sea using ensemble methods

The effects of sea surface temperature（SST） data assimilation in two regional ocean modeling systems were examined for the Yellow Sea（YS）. The SST data from the Operational Sea Surface Temperature and Sea Ice Analysis（OSTIA） were assimilated. The National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center（NMEFC） modeling system uses the ensemble optimal interpolation method for ocean data assimilation and the Kunsan National University（KNU） modeling system uses the ensemble Kalman filter. Without data assimilation, the NMEFC modeling system was better in simulating the subsurface temperature while the KNU modeling system was better in simulating SST. The disparity between both modeling systems might be related to differences in calculating the surface heat flux, horizontal grid spacing, and atmospheric forcing data. The data assimilation reduced the root mean square error（RMSE） of the SST from 1.78°C（1.46°C） to 1.30°C（1.21°C） for the NMEFC（KNU） modeling system when the simulated temperature was compared to Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature（OISST） SST dataset. A comparison with the buoy SST data indicated a 41%（31%） decrease in the SST error for the NMEFC（KNU） modeling system by the data assimilation. In both data assimilative systems, the RMSE of the temperature was less than 1.5°C in the upper 20 m and approximately 3.1°C in the lower layer in October. In contrast, it was less than 1.0°C throughout the water column in February. This study suggests that assimilations of the observed temperature profiles are necessary in order to correct the lower layer temperature during the stratified season and an ocean modeling system with small grid spacing and optimal data assimilation method is preferable to ensure accurate predictions of the coastal ocean in the YS.

AIM： To determine if the fraction of Nardostachysjata- mansi （N J） has the potential to ameliorate the severity of acute pancreatitis （AP）. METHODS： Mice were administered the biologically active fraction of N J, i.e., the 4th fraction （N J4）, intra- peritoneally, and then injected with the stable chole- cystokinin analogue cerulein hourly for 6 h. Six hours after the last cerulein injection, the pancreas, lung, and blood were harvested for morphological examination,measurement of cytokine expression, and examination of neutrophil infiltration. RESULTS： N J4 administration attenuated the sever- ity of AP and lung injury associated with AP. It also reduced cytokine production and neutrophil infiltration and resulted in the in vivo up-regulation of heine oxy- genase-1 （HO-1）. Furthermore, NJ4 and its biologically active fraction, N J4-2 inhibited the cerulein-induced death of acinar cells by inducing HO-1 in isolated pan- creatic acinar cells. CONCLUSION： These results suggest that N J4 may be a candidate fraction offering protection in AP and N J4 might ameliorate the severity of pancreatitis by induc- ing HO-1 expression.

AIM: To assess the efficacy and safety of weekly docetaxel plus a fixed-dose rate(FDR) of gemcitabine in metastatic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(SCC).METHODS: A multi-center, open-label, prospective phase Ⅱ study was ***-three esophageal SCC patients with documented progression after fluoropyrimidine/platinum-based first-line chemotherapy were enrolled and treated with docetaxel 35 mg/m2 and gemcitabine 1000 mg/m2 iv at a FDR(10 mg/m2 per minute) on days 1 and *** was repeatedevery twenty-one days until disease progression, unacceptable toxicity, or consent *** primary endpoint was response rate(RR), and secondary endpoints were safety, progression-free survival(PFS) and overall survival(OS).RESULTS: Combination of weekly docetaxel and FDR gemcitabine was well tolerated: the most common treatment-related adverse events were anemia(97%), fatigue(64%) and neutropenia(55%).One patient with multiple lung and lymph node metastases died of respiratory failure after receiving four cycles of chemotherapy, and the possibility of drug-induced pneumonitis could not be completely *** control(objective response plus stable disease) in the ITT population was achieved in 88% of patients, and the overall RR was 30%(95%CI: 15%-46%).The median PFS and OS were 4.0(95%CI: 3.4-4.6) and 8.8 mo(95%CI: 7.8-9.8 mo), ***: A combination of weekly docetaxel and FDR gemcitabine showed promising antitumor activity and tolerability in previously treated, metastatic esophageal SCC.

A Study on Simple Prediction Method of Heat Load： A Use of Linear Approximation Indicial Response in Basements

This study was conducted to establish a predictable method for a heat load of an underground structure with sufficient accuracy. As the first step, our previous paper reported the measurement results of field experiments on an underground experimental basement under internal heat generation conditions. Also, it presented the results of numerical analyses on the heat and moisture behavior and the influence of internal heat generation of the experimental basement and ground. However, it is practically impossible to utilize the model of simultaneous heat and moisture transfer at the design phase because the prediction by the model of simultaneous heat and moisture transfer requires a long calculation time. In this paper, the authors present the simple load calculation technique, using a linearized approximation indicial response of the inner surface heat flux in a basement to outdoor air temperature change. In addition, the approximation indicial responses for each part of the single-walled concrete drawn using this technique are arranged. The heat load calculation example of application to the basement of the optional size by this technique is shown.

Factors Affecting Maternal Coping in Korean Mothers of Children with Cancer

Background: The childhood cancer is increasing throughout the world. The incidence of children and adolescent (1 - 19 years old) mortality by cancer was 4.49 by 2006 (Korea Statistics, 2014). Mothers of children experienced a difficult situation in coping when their children were diagnosed with cancer. Based on Mishel’s Uncertainty in Illness Theory, maternal uncertainty and perceived social support are important factors that may have an impact on maternal coping in mothers of children with cancer. Therefore, it was worth to investigate this phenomenon in the context of Korea where no such study was conducted. Objective: To identify the factors affecting maternal coping in mothers of children with cancer. Methods: The study was conducted by using a descriptive design. This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board, Yonsei Health System, Severance Hospital, Seoul, Korea and informed consent forms were obtained from the participants. Fifty-nine mothers completed three questionnaires: 1) Parent’s Perception of Uncertainty Scale, 2) Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, and 3) Coping Health Inventory for Parents. The internal consistency of these instruments was satisfactory, all with alpha coefficients over 0.86. Results: Hierarchical multiple regression analysis revealed that perceived social support and maternal uncertainty together explained 35% of the variance in the maternal coping in mothers of children with cancer (R2 = 0.353, F = 15.255, p = 0.000). Perceived social support and maternal uncertainty had an impact on maternal coping. Conclusions: The findings provided information that could be used in a further intervention study to increase maternal coping in mothers of children with cancer.

Low-Power High-Efficiency Multi-Gigabit 60 GHz Fransceiver Systems Routing in Vehicular Environments

This paper proposes low-power high-efficiency multi-gigabit 60 GHz transceiver systems for short-range communications. 60 GHz muhi-gigabit on-off keying （OOK） receiver system-in-package （SIP） module is developed using a low temperature co-fired ceramic （LTCC） technology. Integrated with a low-power complementary metal oxide semiconductor （CMOS） OOK demodulator, the LTCC receiver module demonstrates Full-HD uncompressed video streaming at a distance of 1 m. A low-power and high-efficiency fully integrated OOK transceiver is also developed to be integrated in a handheld device. The transceiver consumes 67 mW at 10.7 Gb/ s and occupies an active footprint of 0.44 mm^2. With an on-board Yagi-Uda antenna, the transceiver achieves 10.7 Gb/s of data transmission, resulting in a high energy efficiency of 6.26 pJ/bit. The antenna-in-package module with the transceiver demon- strates mobile-to-display 1080p Full-HD video transmission over a distance of 60 cm.

AIM: To evaluate the long-term efficacy adefovir(ADV)-based combination therapies in entecavir(ETV)-resistant chronic hepatitis B(CHB) patients. METHODS: F i fty CHB pat ient s wi t h genotypic resistance to ETV at 13 medical centers in South Korea were included for the analysis. All the patients received rescue therapy with the combination of ADV plus ETV(ADV/ETV,n = 23) or ADV plus lamivudine(LMV)(ADV/LMV,n = 27) for more than 12 mo. Patients were monitored at least every 3-4 mo during ADV-based combination therapy by clinical examination as well as biochemical and virological assessments. Hepatitis B virus(HBV) DNA levels were measured by realtime PCR and logarithmically transformed for analysis. Cumulative rates of virologic response(VR; HBV DNA < 20 IU/m L) were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method,and the difference was determined by a logrank test. Multivariate logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards models were used to identify independent risk factors significantly associated with short-term and long-term VR,***: Baseline median HBV DNA levels were 5.53(2.81-7.63) log10 IU/m L. The most commonly observed ETV genotypic mutation sites were rt184 and rt202. Patients were treated for a median of 27(12-45) mo. Overall,cumulative VR rates at 6,12,24,and 36 mo were 26%,36%,45%,and 68%,respectively. Patients treated with the ADV/ETV combination showed higher cumulative VR rates(35%,43%,65%,and 76%,respectively) than those with the ADV/LAM combination(18%,30%,30%,and 62%,respectively; P = 0.048). In the multivariate analysis,low baseline HBV DNA levels(< 5.2 log10 IU/m L) and initial virologic response at 3 mo(IVR-3; HBV DNA < 3.3 log10 IU/m L after 3 mo) were independent predictive factors for VR. Patients with favorable predictors achieved cumulative VR rates up to 90% at 36 mo. AIM:To investigate serotonergic Ca 2+ signaling and the expression of 5-hydroxytryptamine(5-HT) receptors,as well as Ca 2+ transporting proteins,in hepatic stellate cells(HSCs) . METHODS:The intracellular Ca 2+ concentration([Ca 2+ ]i) of isolated rat HSCs was measured with a fluorescence microscopic imaging *** PCR was per-formed to determine the transcriptional levels of 5-HT receptors and endoplasmic reticulum(ER) proteins involved in Ca 2+ storage and release in cultured rat HSCs. RESULTS:Distinct from quiescent cells,activated HSCs exhibited[Ca 2+ ]i transients following treatment with 5-HT,which was abolished by U-73122,a phospholipase C *** of 5-HT2A and 5-HT2B receptors,but not 5-HT3,was prominent during trans-differentiation of *** with ritanserin,a 5-HT2 antagonist,inhibited[Ca 2+ ]i changes upon application of *** of type 1 inositol-5'-triphosphate receptor and type 2 sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum Ca 2+ ATPase were also increased during activation of HSCs and serve as the major isotypes for ER Ca 2+ storage and release in activated *** 2+ binding chaperone proteins of the ER,including calreticulin,calnexin and calsequestrin,were up-regulated following activation of HSCs. CONCLUSION:The appearance of 5-HT-induced[Ca 2+ ]i response accompanied by upregulation of metabotropic 5-HT2 receptors and Ca 2+ transporting/chaperone ER proteins may participate in the activating process of HSCs.

Comparative Analysis of Four Stem Taper Models for Quercus glauca in Mount Halla,Jeju Island,South Korea

This study was conducted to fit the diameter-height data of Quercusglaucain Jeju Island, South Korea to the four commonly used stem taper equations andto evaluate the performance of the four stem taper models using four statistical criteria： Fit index （FI）, root mean square error （RMSE）, bias （）,and absolute mean difference （AMD）. Results showed that the Kozak02stem taper equation provided the best FI（0.9847）, RMSE（1.5745）,（-0.0030 cm） and AMD （1.0990 cm） whileMax and Burkhart model had the poorest performance among the four stem taper models based on the four evaluation statistics （FI ： 0.9793,RMSE ： 1.8272, ： 0.3040 cm and AMD ： 1.3060 cm）. These stem taper equations can serve as a useful tool for forest managers in estimating the diameter outside bark at any given height, merchantable stem volumes and total stem volumesof the standing trees of Quercusglaucain theGotjawal forests located in Mount Halla, Jeju Island, South Korea.
