Micron-sized nonspherical polymer particles having different morphologies were synthesized by seeded soap-free emulsion polymerization of styrene （St） and ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate （EGDMA, used as a crosslinker） on spherical, linear polystyrene （PS） seed particles. The morphology of the resulting PS/poly（St-co-EGDMA） particles was dependent on the crosslinker concentration and polymerization temperature.

Role of rice cytosolic hexokinase OsHXK7 in sugar signaling and metabolism

We characterized the function of the rice cytosolic hexokinase OsHXK7 （Qryza sativa HexokindseZ）, which is highly upregulated when seeds germinate under O2- deficient conditions. According to transient expression assays that used the promoter：luciferase fusion construct, OsHXK7 enhanced the glucose （Glc）-dependent repression of a rice n-amylase gene （RAmy3D） in the mesophyll protoplasts of maize, but its catalytically inactive mutant alleles did not. Consistently, the expression of OsHXK7, but not its catalytically inactive alleles, complemented the Arabidopsis glucose insensitive2-1 （gin2-1） mutant, thereby resulting in the wild type characteristics of Glc-dependent repression, seedling development, and plant growth. Interestingly, OsHXK7-mediated Glc-dependent repression was abolished in the O2-deficient mesophyll protoplasts of maize. This result provides compelling evidence that OsHXK7 functions in sugar signaling via a glycolysis-dependent manner under normal conditions, but its signaling role is suppressed when O2 is deficient. The germination of two null OsHXK7 mutants, oshxk7-1 and oshxk7-2, was affected by O2 deficiency, but overexpression enhanced germination in rice. This result suggests the distinct role that OsHXK7 plays in sugar metabolism and efficient germination by enforcing glycolysis-mediated fermentation in O2-deficient rice.

Safety of endoscopic ultrasound-guided ethanol ablation for pancreatic cystic lesions: A single-center experience of 214 patients

Background:Endoscopic ultrasound-guided ethanol ablation(EUS-EA)for pancreatic cystic lesions(PCLs)has been used in recent years as a feasible treatment modality for low malignant probability PCLs or patients considered high-risk for *** present study aimed to confirm the safety of EUS-EA and to find predictive factors for adverse event(AE).Methods:A retrospective review was performed from the prospectively maintained database of patients who underwent EUS-EA for PCLs from June 2006 to April 2018 at Seoul National University *** primary outcomes of the study were the rates of AEs and severe AEs by *** secondary outcome was the predictive factors of AEs including acute pancreatitis and abdominal ***:A total of 214 patients were evaluated and the diagnoses of PCLs according to cystic fluid analysis and clinical features were as follows:serous cystic neoplasm(32.2%),mucinous cystic neoplasm(26.6%),branch duct type intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm(BD-IPMN)(29.4%),and pseudocyst(11.7%).Three patients(1.4%)experienced severe ***,AEs occurred in 71(33.2%)***-IPMN(OR:2.87;95%CI:1.05–7.84;P=0.040),multilocular cysts(OR:3.59;95%CI:1.09–11.85;P=0.036),suspected ethanol leakage during procedure(OR:10.68;95%CI:1.98–57.53;P=0.006),and sticky cystic fluid(OR:3.83;95%CI:1.20–12.24;P=0.024)were predictive factors for post-procedural acute *** of uncinate process(OR:2.99;95%CI:1.22–7.35;P=0.017)and PCLs with exophytic portion(OR:3.70;95%CI:1.96–7.01;P<0.001)were predictive factors for post-procedural abdominal ***:EUS-EA is a safe procedure with a very low rate of severe *** seems possible to predict the AEs according to the features of the procedure and PCLs.

Numerical investigation of aerodynamic flow actuation produced by surface plasma actuator on 2D oscillating airfoil

Numerical simulation of unsteady flow control over an oscillating NACA0012 airfoil is investigated. Flow actuation of a turbulent flow over the airfoil is provided by low current DC surface glow discharge plasma actuator which is analytically modeled as an ion pressure force produced in the cathode sheath region. The modeled plasma actuator has an induced pressure force of about 2 k Pa under a typical experiment condition and is placed on the airfoil surface at 0% chord length and/or at 10% chord length. The plasma actuator at deep-stall angles(from 5° to 25°) is able to slightly delay a dynamic stall and to weaken a pressure fluctuation in down-stroke motion. As a result, the wake region is reduced. The actuation effect varies with different plasma pulse frequencies, actuator locations and reduced frequencies. A lift coefficient can increase up to 70% by a selective operation of the plasma actuator with various plasma frequencies and locations as the angle of attack changes. Active flow control which is a key advantageous feature of the plasma actuator reveals that a dynamic stall phenomenon can be controlled by the surface plasma actuator with less power consumption if a careful control scheme of the plasma actuator is employed with the optimized plasma pulse frequency and actuator location corresponding to a dynamic change in reduced frequency.

Simulation of water entry of an elastic wedge using the FDS scheme and HCIB method

The hydroelasticity of water entry of an elastic wedge is simulated using a code developed using the flux-difference splitting scheme for immiscible and incompressible fluids and the hybrid Cartesian/immersed boundary method. The free surface is regarded as a moving contact discontinuity and is captured without any additional treatment along the interface. Immersed boundary nodes are distributed inside a fluid domain based on the edges that cross an instantaneous body boundary. Dependent variables are reconstructed at each immersed boundary node with the help of an interpolation along a local normal line for providing a boundary condition for a discretized flow problem. A dynamic beam equation is used for modeling the elastic deformation of a wedge. The developed code is validated through comparisons with other experimental and computational results for a free-falling wedge. The effects of the elastic deformation of the wedge on the pressure fields and time histories of the impact force are investigated in relation to the stiffness and density of the structure. Grid independence test is carried out for the computed time history of the force acting on an elastic wedge.

Efects on nano zero-valent iron reactivity of interactions between hardness, alkalinity, and natural organic matter in reverse osmosis concentrate

Nanoscale zero-valent iron （NZVI） is considered to have potential to reduce nitrate in the concentrate generated by high pressure membrane processes aimed at water reuse. However, it is necessary to verify the effect of the matrix components in the concentrates on NZVI reactivity. In this study, the influence of hardness, alkalinity, and organic matter on NZVI reactivity was evaluated by the response surface method （RSM）. Hardness （Ca/＋） had a positive effect on NZVI reactivity by accelerating iron corrosion. In contrast, alkalinity （bicarbonate; HCO3） and organic matter （humic acid; HA） had negative effects on NZVI reactivity due to morphological change to carbonate green rust, and to competitive adsorption of HA, respectively. The validity of the statistical prediction model derived from RSM was confirmed by an additional confirmation experiment, and the experimental result was within the 95% confidential interval. Therefore, it can be indicated that the RSM model produced results that were statistically significant.

Formation of unidirectional nanoporous structures in thickly anodized aluminum oxide layer

A series of anodic aluminum oxide(AAO) was grown on the commercially pure 1050 aluminum sheet by controlling electrolyte temperature(2-15 ℃) and anodizing time(0.5-6 h),using a fixed applied current density of 3 A/dm2 in diluted sulfuric acid electrolyte.A crack-free thick AAO with the thickness of 105-120 μm and containing unidirectional nano sized pores(average pore diameter of 5-7 nm) is successfully achieved in the specimens anodized for 2 h,irrespective of electrolyte *** anodizing time reaches 6 h,very thick AAO with the thickness of 230-284 μm is grown,and average diameter of unidirectional pores is in the range of 6-24 *** higher values in both the AAO thickness and pore diameter are attained for the specimens anodized at higher temperatures of 10-15 ℃.A crack is observed to exist in the AAO after anodizing up to 4 h and more.A higher fraction(more than 9%) of the crack is shown in the specimens anodized at higher temperatures of 10-15 ℃ for 6 h and a considerable amount of giant cracks are contained.
