Pre-harvest sprouting(PHS)poses a significant global challenge to cereal production,impacting both yield and *** this study,we employed genome-wide association studies(GWAS)on diverse rice accessions to identify novel PHS-associated *** assessment of 127 cultivated accessions for panicle germination(PHS)and detached grain germination(germination rate of detached grains at the 14th day(D14))revealed considerable phenotypic variation among rice *** analysis identified 91 significant signals at–log10(P-value)>5,including 15SNPs for PHS and 76 SNPs for D14.A subsequent linkage disequilibrium(LD)block-based GWAS analysis detected 227 significant SNPs for both traits,consisting of 18 nonsynonymous substitutions located on the coding regions of nine *** haplotype analysis identified 32 haplotypes,with 10 specific to cultivated accessions,19 specific to the wild type,and three shared between them.A phenotypic assessment of major haplotypes revealed significant differences between resistant(Hap1 and Hap2)and susceptible haplotypes(Hap5,Hap27,and Hap28),distinguished by a G/A SNP within a novel gene,*** identified haplotypes offer promising prospects for haplotypebased breeding aimed at enhancing PHS resistance in rice.

We characterise the positive cone of a real C^(*)-algebra *** an open coneΩin a real Banach space V,with the closureΩ,we show thatΩis the interior of the positive cone of a unital real C^(*)-algebra if and only if it is a Finsler symmetric cone with an orientable extension,which is equivalent to the condition that V is,in an equivalent norm,the Hermitian part of a unital real C^(*)-algebra with the positive coneΩ.

A new multi-element analysis technique based on laser-excited atomic fluorescence was reviewed. however, the one-wavelength-one-transition constraint was overcome. Numerous elements were induced to fluoresce at a single excitation wavelength of 193 nm. This was possible provided that the analytes were imbedded in dense plumes, such as those produced by pulsed laser ablation. The underlying mechanism of the technique was explained and corroborated. Analytical applications to metals, plastics, ceramics and their composites were discribed. Detection limits in the ng/g range and mass limits of atto moles were demonstrated. Several real-world problems, including the analysis of paint coating for trace lead, the non-destructive analysis of potteries and ink, the chemical profiling of electrode plastic interfaces, and the analysis of ingestible lead colloids were discussed.

AIM: Gastrografin is a hyperosmolar water-soluble contrast medium. Besides its predictive value for the need for operative treatment, a potential therapeutic role of this agent in adhesive small bowel obstruction has been suggested. This study aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of gastrografin in adhesive small bowel obstruction when conservative treatment failed. METhoDS: Patients with adhesive small bowel obstruction were given trial conservative treatment unless there was fear of bowel strangulation. Those responded in the initial 48 h had conservative treatment continued. Patients who showed no improvement in the initial 48 h were given 100 mL of gastrografin through nasogastric tube followed by serial abdominal radiographs. Patients with the contrast appeared in large bowel within 24 h were regarded as having partial obstruction and conservative treatment was continued. Patients in which the contrast failed to reach large bowel within 24 h were considered to have complete obstruction and laparotomy was performed. RESULTS: Two hundred and twelve patients with 245 episodes of adhesive obstruction were included. Fifteen patients were operated on soon after admission due to fear of strangulation. One hundred and eighty-six episodes of obstruction showed improvement in the initial 48 h and conservative treatment was continued. Two patients had subsequent operations because of persistent obstruction. Forty-four episodes of obstruction showed no improvement within 48 h and gastrografin was administered. Seven patients underwent complete obstruction surgery. Partial obstruction was demonstrated in 37 other cases, obstruction resolved subsequently in all of them except one patient who required laparotomy because of persistent obstruction. The overall operative rate in this study was 10%. There was no complication that could be attributed to the use of gastrografin. This paper seeks to examine the quality and equality of basic education of hong Kong based on the first three cycles of the Program for International Student Assessment(PISA).Results from these three assessments suggested that the hong Kong students have an outstanding performance in mathematics,science and *** particular,the performance of reading improves substantially in PISA *** far as equality in education is concerned,the achievement gap of students from different socio-economic backgrounds in hong Kong is relatively small compared with other ***,the academic performance variation between-schools suggest that,there is still academic segregation among secondary schools in hong Kong although it has been reduced slightly in the PISA 2006.

In view of the increasing life expectancy in different parts of the world, a larger proportion of elderly patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) requiring oncological treatment is expected. The clinicopathological characteristics of HCC in elderly patients and in younger patients are different. Elderly patients, in general, also have more comorbidities. Evaluation of the efficacy of different HCC treatment options in elderly patients is necessary to optimize treatment outcomes for them. Treatment modalities for HCC include hepatectomy, liver transplantation, radiofrequency ablation, transarterial chemoembolization, and molecular-targeted therapy with sorafenib. In this review, current evidence on the risks and outcomes of the different HCC treatments for elderly patients are discussed. According to data in the literature, elderly patients and younger patients benefited similarly from HCC treatments. More clinical data are needed for the determination of selecting criteria on elderly HCC patients to maximize their chance of getting the most appropriate and effective treatments. As such,further studies evaluating the outcomes of different HCC treatment modalities in elderly patients are warranted.

Metallic Pd clusters were embedded into TiO2 nanoparticles that were synthesized within reverse micelle via a solution reduction of Pd(NO3)2 by hydrazine hydrate. The size of the particles can be controlled by manipulating the relative rates of the hydrolysis and condensation reactions of titanium tetra-isopropoxide within the micro-emulsion. The spherical equivalent size for the Pd clusters formed in TiO2 matrix was estimated to be around (3±1) nm. The presence of Pd in the matrix was demonstrated by EDS spectroscopy. The effects of synthesis parameters, such as the concentration of Pd solution, the molar ratio of water to TIP, and the molar ratio of water to surfactant, were discussed.

AIM: To assess the clinical characteristics of Helicobacterpylori(H pylori) negative duodenal ***: Patients with an endoscopic diagnosis of duodenal ulcer between 1996 and 2002 were included in the present study. Patients were considered to be negative for Hpylori, if both histological examination and rapid urease test of biopsy specimens were negative. A comparison was made between patients with H pyloripositive and negative duodenal ***: A total of 1 343 patients were studied. Their mean age was 54.7±0.5 years. There was a male preponderance (M:F = 2.5:1). Three hundred and ninetyeight patients (29.6%) did not have H pylori infection. The annual proportion of patients with H pylori negative duodenal ulcers increased progressively from 1996 to2002. On multivariate analysis, patients with H pylorinegative duodenal ulcer were more likely to be older, have concomitant medical problem, pre-existing malignancy, recent surgery, underlying sepsis, or taken non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. In terms of clinical presentations, patients with H pylori negative duodenal ulcer were more likely to present with bleeding, multiple ulcers and larger ***: The proportion of patients with H pylori negative duodenal ulcers is on the rise because of a continued drop in incidence of H pylori positive duodenalulcers in recent years. Such patients have distinct clinical characteristics and it is important to ascertain the H pylori status before starting eradication therapy.

Multistage defense response of microalgae exposed to pharmaceuticals in wastewater

Recently, the use of microalgae for bioremediation of pharmaceuticals(Ph As) has attracted increasing interest. however, most studies focused more on microalgae removal performance, its defensive response to the Ph As during wastewater treatment remains unexplored. Herein, microalgal three defensive systems have been investigated in synthetic wastewater, with six Ph As as the typical drug. Results show that Ph As could bind to EPS, and this action in turn could help to alleviate the direct toxicity of Ph As to microalgae. Subsequently, the physiological analyses revealed the increase of superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase(CAT), and peroxidase(POD) activities, potentially reducing the oxidative stress induced by Ph As. Furthermore, the enzyme activities of cytochrome P450(CYP450) and glutathione-S-transferase(GST) were significantly upregulated after exposure to SMX, CIP and BPA, followed by a significant decrease in biodegradation rates after the addition of CYP450 inhibitors, suggesting that the biotransformation and detoxification of Ph As occurred. Meanwhile, molecular docking further revealed that CYP450 could bind with Ph As via hydrogen bond and hydrophobic interaction, which proved their abilities to be metabolized and form transformation products in microalgae. These findings provide an advancing understanding of microalgae technologies to improve the treatment of wastewater contaminated with Ph As.

Transmission of 40Gbit/s NRZ signal was successfully demonstrated over 219km of installed SMF in KT's Daejeon area network. After transmission, the measured power penalty was 0.5dB for all the tributary channels.
