Effect of Sub-T_g Annealing on the Corrosion Resistance of the Cu–Zr Amorphous Alloys

Despite the economy of material cost and excellent toughness of Cu-based amorphous alloys,especially CusoZrso,their poor corrosion resistance to a chloride medium limits their widespread applications.In this study,corrosion tests were performed on the CusoZrso amorphous alloy with different degrees of short-range order,which were prepared by annealing below the glass transition temperature（Tg）.It was found that the corrosion resistance of amorphous alloys is improved to a significant level when the alloys were heated below Tg.Calorimetric studies showed that thermally activated relaxation process of created disorder,which occurs during sub-Tg annealing,is responsible for the improvement in the corrosion resistance.Molecular dynamics simulations performed on the Cu-Zr amorphous alloys demonstrated that the relaxation process of the alloys is associated with the formation of energetically stable icosahedra and icosahedron-like structures.Our study highlights the effects of sub-Tg annealing on the improvement in the corrosion resistance of the amorphous alloys from the viewpoint the relaxation process of the short-range orders.

Evaluation of recurrence in gastric carcinoma: Comparison of contrast-enhanced computed tomography and positron emission tomography/computed tomography

AIM To compare the value of contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography(CT) and fluorodeoxyglucose(FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography(PET/CT) for detecting gastric carcinoma recurrence.METHODS We retrospectively examined data from 2475 patients who underwent both contrast-enhanced abdominal CT and FDG PET/CT for the surveillance of gastric carcinoma curative resection. Patients had an interval of less than 1 mo between their CT and PET/CT scans. Sixty patients who had recurrence were enrolled. Among 1896 patients who did not have recurrence, 60 were selected by simple random sampling. All CT and PET/CT images were reviewed retrospectively by two reviewers blinded to all clinical and pathologic information except curative resection due to gastric carcinoma. RESULTS The pathological stage of the recurrence group was statistically significantly higher than that of the control group(P < 0.001). In the 60 patients who had recurrence, there were 79 recurrent lesions. Fortyfour patients had only one location of recurrence, 13 patients had two locations, and 3 patients had three. In the detection of patient-based overall recurrence, no statistically significant differences existed between the two modalities(P = 0.096). However, for peritoneal carcinomatosis, CT had a statistically significantly higher sensitivity compared to PET/CT(96% vs 50%, P = 0.001). Adenocarcinoma was the most common type of gastric carcinoma. On the pathology-based analysis, CT also had a statistically significantly higher sensitivity compared to PET/CT(98% vs 80%, P = 0.035).CONCLUSION Contrast-enhanced CT was superior to PET/CT in the detection of peritoneal carcinomatosis and pathologic type of adenocarcinoma.

Rectal cancer is a common cancer and a major cause of mortality in Western countries.Accurate staging is essential for determining the optimal treatment strategies and planning appropriate surgical procedures to control rectal cancer.Endorectal ultrasonography(EUS)is suitable for assessing the extent of tumor invasion,particularly in early-stage or superficial rectal cancer cases.In advanced cases with distant metastases,computed tomography(CT)is the primary approach used to evaluate the disease.Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)is often used to assess preoperative staging and the circumferential resection margin involvement,which assists in evaluating a patient’s risk of recurrence and their optimal therapeutic strategy.Positron emission tomography(PET)-CT may be useful in detecting occult synchronous tumors or metastases at the time of initial presentation.Restaging after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy(CRT)remains a challenge with all modalities because it is difficult to reliably differentiate between the tumor mass and other radiation-induced changes in the images.EUS does not appear to have a useful role in post-therapeutic response assessments.Although CT is most commonly used to evaluate treatment responses,its utility for identifying and following-up metastatic lesions is limited.Preoperative high-resolution MRI in combination with diffusion-weighted imaging,and/or PET-CT could provide valuable prognostic information for rectal cancer patients with locally advanced disease receiving preoperative CRT.Based on these results,we conclude that a combination of multimodal imaging methods should be used to precisely assess the restaging of rectal cancer following CRT.

In the digital age,non-touch communication technologies are reshaping human-device interactions and raising security concerns.A major challenge in current technology is the misinterpretation of gestures by sensors and cameras,often caused by environmental factors.This issue has spurred the need for advanced data processing methods to achieve more accurate gesture recognition and predictions.Our study presents a novel virtual keyboard allowing character input via distinct hand gestures,focusing on two key aspects:hand gesture recognition and character input mechanisms.We developed a novel model with LSTM and fully connected layers for enhanced sequential data processing and hand gesture recognition.We also integrated CNN,max-pooling,and dropout layers for improved spatial feature extraction.This model architecture processes both temporal and spatial aspects of hand gestures,using LSTM to extract complex patterns from frame sequences for a comprehensive understanding of input data.Our unique dataset,essential for training the model,includes 1,662 landmarks from dynamic hand gestures,33 postures,and 468 face landmarks,all captured in real-time using advanced pose estimation.The model demonstrated high accuracy,achieving 98.52%in hand gesture recognition and over 97%in character input across different scenarios.Its excellent performance in real-time testing underlines its practicality and effectiveness,marking a significant advancement in enhancing human-device interactions in the digital age.

Dear editor,Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus2(SARS-CoV-2)infection can lead to severe outcomes in patients with cancer[1].It has been reported that patients with lung cancers disproportionately manifest severe COVID-19 with a high rate of hospitalization and death[2].Notably,the SARS-CoV-2 Spike(S)protein can induce hyper-inflammation in both epithelial cells and macrophages through toll-like receptor(TLR)1/TLR2 or TLR2/6-dependent nuclear factor-kappaB(NF-κB)path-way[3].However,molecular and cellular evidence on whether the SARS-CoV-2 virus affects the severity of lung cancer patients through TLR1/2 or TLR2/6 signaling remains unclear.

Piezoelectricity offers an electromechanical coupling that is widely utilized in transducer applications.There has been a consistent demand for transparent piezoelectric materials for optoelectrical applications.Therefore,despite the inherent tradeoff between the transparency and the piezoelectricity,numerous strategies have been explored to develop the transparent piezoelectric materials.Nonetheless,the most transparent piezoelectric materials developed to date is either a single crystal or materials that achieve transparency via hot-press sintering,limiting its industrial applicability.Therefore,we introduce a novel piezoelectric material that ensures transparency through co-doping and pressureless sintering of polycrystalline ceramics.In this study,we employed a compositional optimization approach to enhance the synergistic effect between the transparency and the piezoelectric properties of 0.71Pb(Mg_(1/3)Nb_(2/3))O_(3)–0.29PbTiO_(3)(PMN–0.29PT)ceramics.By utilizing the tape casting process for mass production and large-area manufacturing,our Pb_(0.913)La_(0.0145)Sm_(0.0145)(Mg_(1/3)Nb_(2/3))_(0.71)Ti_(0.29)O_(3)(TP2.9)ceramics exhibited over 60%transparency and large piezoelectric coefficient(d33)of 1104 pC/N.This material holds considerable promise for a wide range of industrial applications in both the optical and electronic domains.

Organic light-emitting diodes(OLEDs)have demonstrated remarkable advancements in both device lifetime and luminous efficiency.However,insufficient operation lifetime due to device degradation remains a major hurdle,especially for brighter devices.Understanding the degradation mechanisms of OLEDs due to the degradation of functional materials and the formation of defects in device architectures continues to be a significant challenge.Herein,we evaluate the degradation characteristics by scrutinizing the electrical and optical properties,as well as analyzing the charge carrier dynamics in pristine and aged states of phosphorescent OLEDs(PhOLEDs).We show that degradation mechanisms in PhOLEDs can be elucidated in terms of the ideality factors of current and luminance in pristine and aged device states.The consistent shifts in distinct ideality factors across various states points out that the device degradation is attributed to the deterioration of the guest material,i.***.green-light-emitting phosphorescent material.Conversely,the incongruity in ideality factor changes between the two states indicates that the degradation results from the deterioration of non-light-emitting material.Subsequent characterization experiments provide further evidence that this degradation is primarily attributed to the deterioration of CBP-host material.The thorough understanding of degradation mechanisms established in this study can contribute to realizing the highly reliable PhOLEDs with a long lifetime.

Parameter estimation methods can be classified into(1)manual(trial-and-error),(2)numerical optimization(optimization,sampling),(3)Bayesian inference(Bayes filter,Bayesian calibration),and(4)machine learning(generative model).Bayesian calibration has been widely used because it can capture stochastic nature of uncertain parameters.However,the results of Bayesian calibration could be biased by(1)the prior distribution assumed by the expert’s subjective judgment;(2)the likelihood function that cannot always describe the true likelihood;and(3)the posterior distribution approximation method,such as the Markov Chain Monte Carlo,which requires significant computation time.To overcome this,a new approach using a generator-regularized continuous conditional generative adversarial network(GRcGAN)is presented in this paper.Five target parameters of the DOE reference building model were selected.GRcGAN was trained to estimate uncertain parameters using simulated monthly electricity and gas use.GRcGAN can successfully estimate five uncertain parameters based on 1,000 training data points.The proposed approach presents a potential for stochastic parameter estimation.

BACKGROUND Intravenous steroid pulse therapy is the treatment of choice for acute exacerbation of multiple sclerosis(MS).Although steroid administration is generally welltolerated,cases of cardiac arrhythmia have been reported.Herein,we describe a young woman who developed marked sinus bradycardia and T-wave abnormalities after corticosteroid administration.We also present plausible explanations for the abnormalities observed in this patient.CASE SUMMARY An 18-year-old woman experienced vertiginous dizziness and binocular diplopia 1 wk prior to admission.Neurological examination revealed left internuclear ophthalmoplegia with left peripheral-type facial palsy.The initial laboratory results were consistent with those of type 2 diabetes.Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed multifocal,non-enhancing,symptomatic lesions and multiple enhancing lesions.She was diagnosed with MS and maturity-onset diabetes of the young.Intravenous methylprednisolone was administered.On day 5 after methylprednisolone infusion,marked bradycardia with T-wave abnormalities were observed.Genetic evaluation to elucidate the underlying conditions revealed a hepatocyte nuclear factor 4-alpha(HNF4A)gene mutation.Steroid treatment was discontinued under suspicion of corticosteroid-induced bradycardia.Her electrocardiogram changes returned to normal without complications two days after steroid discontinuation.CONCLUSION Corticosteroid-induced bradycardia may have a significant clinical impact,especially in patients with comorbidities,such as HNF4A mutations.
