Bioprocessed Black Rice Bran Potentiates the Growth Inhibitory Activity of an Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor against Murine Colon Carcinoma

This study determined the effect of orally fed polysaccharide-rich bioprocessed (fermented) black rice bran produced by culturing with shiitake (Lentinus edodes) mushroom mycelium on CT-26 colon cancer cells in vivo in an intracutaneously transplanted mouse tumor alone and in combination with intraperitoneally administered anti-PD-1 immune checkpoint inhibitor. Analysis of the isolated tumor weights at the end of the study shows that the average tumor size in control mice is 3.78 grams, and the average tumor size in mice treated with anti-PD-1 antibody is 2.16 grams. The average tumor size in mice treated with BRB-F alone is 2.25 grams, and the average tumor size in mice treated with anti-PD-1 antibody BRB-F combination is 1.38 grams. Thus, BRB-F or anti-PD-1 antibody alone each reduce tumor size by 40.5% or 42.9%, whereas the combination of BRB-F and anti-PD-1 antibody reduces tumor size by 63.5%, with their cooperative effect being statistically significant. The observed anti-tumor effects were accompanied by a series of biomarkers associated with cancer formation and inhibition. These results indicate that the reported potentiation of cancer therapy using drug-based medical chemotherapies with added checkpoint inhibitors in human patients are mechanistically similar with the functional food evaluated in the present study. These beneficial effects in mice challenge clinicians to investigate if the black rice bran food product can also protect against human cancer.

Protection of Allergic Asthma in Mice by Black Rice Bran Bioprocessed with Shiitake Mushroom Mycelia

We evaluated the potential of orally fed new food formulations to inhibit biomarkers reported to be involved in the causes of allergic asthma in mice. Asthma, a serious non-communicable disease, affects both adults and children and can be undertreated. New functional foods could provide therapeutic approaches. Here, the anti-asthma mechanism of a new functional food and three isolated fractions produced by bioprocessing black rice bran with shiitake mushroom mycelia was evaluated in mast cells, B cells, and orally fed mice and compared with non-bioprocessed black rice bran. In vitro, the treatments inhibited RBL-2H3 cell degranulation and immunoglobulin E (IgE) production. The in vitro anti-asthma effects were confirmed in orally fed mice following asthma induction by alumina and chicken egg ovalbumin (OVA). The suppression of asthma resulted from the inhibition of inflammation- and immune-related substances, including OVA-specific IgE, thymic stromal lymphopoietin, eotaxin, leukotriene C4, prostaglandin D2, and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and serum. The treatment also reversed the thickening of the lung airway wall. The inflammation and asthma inhibition seems to be regulated by the balance of the T-helper cells’ Th1/Th2 immune response and the inhibition of multiple biomarkers associated with the cause of asthma. Future human clinical studies with adults and children should determine the potential therapeutic value of the anti-asthma effects of the new functional foods.

Prominent cycling reversibility and kinetics enabled by CaTiO3 protective layer on Zn metal for aqueous Zn-ion batteries

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries （AZIBs） have received considerable attention owing to their various advantages such as safety,low cost,simple battery assembly conditions,and high ionic ***,they still suffer from serious problems,including uncontrollable dendrite growth,corrosion,hydrogen evolution reaction （HER） from water decomposition,electrode passivation,and unexpected *** creation of a uniform artificial nanocrystal layer on the Zn anode surface is a promising strategy for resolving these ***,we propose the use of a perovskite CaTiO3（CTO） protective layer on Zn（CTO@Zn） as a promising approach for improving the performance of *** CTO artificial layer provides an efficient pathway for Zn ion diffusion towards the Zn metal because of the high dielectric constant （εr=180） and ferroelectric characteristics that enable the alignment of dipole moments and redistribute the Zn2+ions in the CTO *** avoiding the direct contact of the Zn anode with the electrolyte solution,the uneven dendrite growth,corrosion,parasitic side reactions,and HER are mitigated,while CTO retains its mechanical and chemical robustness during ***,CTO@Zn demonstrates an improved lifespan in a symmetric cell configuration compared with bare ***@Zn shows steady overpotential （～68 m V） for 1500 h at 1 mA cm-2/0.5 mA h cm-2,excelling bare ***,when paired with the V2O5-C cathode,the CTO@Zn//V2O5-C full battery delivers 148.4 mA h g-1（based on the mass of the cathode） after 300 *** study provides new insights into Zn metal anodes and the development of high-performance AZIBs.

Synthesis of tin nanoparticles through modified polyol process and effects of centrifuging and drying on nanoparticles

Sn nanoparticles with average diameter of 13.1 nm were synthesized by modified polyol process,and their melting point was observed to be about 40 °C less than that of bulk *** though Sn nanoparticles are solid and covered with thin PVP capping and oxide layer,Sn nanoparticles in solution agglomerate upon centrifugation,resulting in a melting point *** to stickiness of the PVP capping layer,extensive aggregation between Sn nanoparticles was observed after ***,the aggregation behavior did not further influence the melting point,because actual agglomeration did not occur in the aggregates.

Delusional parasitosis as premotor symptom of parkinson's disease:A case report

BACKGROUND Delusional parasitosis is characterized by a false belief of being infested with parasites,insects,or *** illness is observed in patients with Parkinson’s disease and is usually related to dopaminergic *** our knowledge,no cases of delusional parasitosis have been reported as a premotor symptom or nonmotor symptom of Parkinson’s *** SUMMARY A 75-year-old woman presented with a complaint of itching that she ascribed to the presence of insects in her skin,and she had erythematous plaques on her trunk,arms,buttocks,and *** symptoms started two months before the visit to the *** took medication,including antipsychotics,with a diagnosis of delusional parasitosis,and the delusion improved after three months.A year later,antipsychotics were discontinued,and anxiety and depression were controlled with ***,she complained of bradykinesia,masked face,hand tremor,and mild rigidity,and we performed fluorinated N-3-fluoropropyl-2β-carbomethoxy-3β-(4-iodophenyl)nortropane positron emission tomography(PET),which showed mildly decreased DAT binding in the right anterior putamen and caudate ***’s disease was diagnosed on the basis of PET and clinical *** In conclusion,delusional parasitosis can be considered a non-motor sign of Parkinson’s disease along with depression,anxiety,and constipation.

Effects of Sn addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of extruded Mg-Bi binary alloy

We investigated the effects of Sn addition on the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of an extruded Mg-Bi binary alloy by comparing Mg-5 Bi(B5)and Mg-5 Bi-4 Sn(BT54).Both the extruded alloys exhibit a partially recrystallized grain structure with a strong extrusion fiber texture and numerous Mg3Bi2 ***,the addition of Sn significantly decreases the average grain size of the extruded alloy from 123.9 to 75.2μ*** Sn solute atoms inhibit the activity of dislocation slip,which reduces the internal strain energy accumulated in the dynamically recrystallized(DRXed)grains during ***,this reduced strain energy leads to the decrease in the DRXed grain size owing to weakened grain growth during natural *** extruded BT54 alloy exhibits higher tensile strength and ductility than the extruded B5 *** improvement in the strength by the Sn addition is attributed to the combined effects of grain refinement,Sn solute atoms,and increased dislocation *** formation of{10-11}and{10-11}-{10-12}twins during tension is suppressed by the grain refinement,thereby improving the tensile elongation considerably.

Dynamic recrystallization behavior and microstructural evolution of Mg alloy AZ31 through high-speed rolling

High-speed rolling （HSR） is known to improve the workability of Mg alloys significantly, which makes it possible to impose a large reduction in a single pass without fracture. In the present study, dynamic recrystallization （DRX） behavior and microstructural and textural variations of Mg alloy AZ31 dur-ing a HSR process were investigated by conducting rolling with different imposed reductions in the range of 20%-80% at a high rolling speed of 470 m/min and 400℃. High-strain-rate deformation during HSR suppresses dislocation slips but promotes twinning, which results in the formation of numer-ous twins of several types, i.e., {10-12} extension twins, {10-11} and {10-13} contraction twins, and {10-11}-{10-12} double twins. After twinning, high strain energy is accumulated in twin bands because their crystallographic orientations are favorable for basal slips, leading to subsequent DRX at the twin bands. Accordingly, twinning activation and twinning-induced DRX behavior play crucial roles in accommodating plastic deformation during HSR and in varying microstructure and texture of the high- speed-rolled （HSRed） sheets. Area fraction of fine DRXed grains formed at the twin bands increases with increasing rolling reduction, which is attributed to the combined effects of increased strain, strain rate, and deformation temperature and a decreased critical strain for DRX. Size, internal strain, and texture intensity of the DRXed grains are smaller than those of unDRXed grains. Therefore, as rolling reduction increases, average grain size, stored internal energy, microstructural inhomogeneity, and basal texture intensity of the HSRed sheets gradually decrease owing to an increase in the area fraction of the DRXed grains.

Design and synthesis of low bandgap(LBG) polymer donors is inevitably challenging and their processability from a non-halogenated solvent system remains a hurdle to overcome in the area of highperformance polymer solar cells(PSCs).Due to a high aggregation tendency of LBG polymers,especially diketopyrrolopyrrole(DPP)-based polymers coupled with bithiophenes in the polymer backbones,their widespread adoption in non-ha logena ted solvent-processed PSCs has been ***,a novel LBG DPP-based polymer,called PDPP4 T-1 F with asymmetric arrangement of fluorine atom,has been successfully synthesized and showed an outstanding power conversion efficiency(PCE) of 10.10% in a singlejunction fullerene-based ***,an impressive PCE of 13.21% has been achieved in a tandem device from a fully non-halogenated solvent system,which integrates a wide bandgap PDTBTBz-2 F polymer in the bottom cell and LBG PDPP4 T-1 F polymer in the top *** achieved efficiency is the highest value reported in the literature to date in fullerene-based tandem *** found that a uniformly distributed interpenetrating fibril network with nano-scale phase separation and anisotropy of the polymer backbone orientation for efficient charge transfer/transport and suppressed charge recombination in PDPP4 T-1 F-based PSCs led to outstanding PCEs in single and tandem-junction PSCs.

Rice Transcription Factor OsDOFll Modulates Sugar Transport by Promoting Expression of Sucrose Transporter and SWEET Genes

Sucrose is produced in mesophyll cells and transferred into phloem cells before it is delivered long- distance to sink tissues. However, little is known about how sucrose transport is regulated in plants. Here, we identified a T-DNA insertional mutant of Oryza sativa DNA BINDING WITH ONE FINGER 11 （OsDOF11）, which is expressed in the vascular cells of photosynthetic organs and in various sink tissues. The osdofll mutant plants are semi-dwarf and have fewer tillers and smaller panicles as compared with wild-type （WT） plants. Although sucrose enhanced root elongation in young WT seedlings, this enhance- ment did not occur in osdof11 seedlings due to reduced sucrose uptake. Sugar transport rate analyses revealed that less sugar was transported in osdofll plants than in the WT. Expression of four Sucrose Transporter （SUT） genes-OsSUT1, OsSUT3, OsSUT4, and OsSUT5-as well as two Sugars Will Eventually be Exported Transporters （SWEET） genes, OsSWEETll and OsSWEET14, was altered in various organs of the mutant, including the leaves. Chromatin immunoprecipitation assays showed that OsDOFll directly binds the promoter regions of SUT1, OsSWEETll, and OsSWEET14, indicating that the expression of these transporters responsible for sucrose transport via apopiastic loading is coordinately controlled by OsDOFll. We also observed that osdofll mutant plants were less susceptible to infection byXanthomonas oryzae pathovar oryzae, suggesting that OsDOFll participates in sugar distribution during pathogenic in- vasion. Collectively, these results suggest that OsDOFll modulates sugar transport by regulating the expression of both SUT and SWEET genes in rice.
