A long-term follow-up analysis of associations between tooth loss and multiple cancers in the Linxian General Population cohort

Poor oral health,indicated by tooth loss and periodontal disease,may be an important risk factor for various *** studies have found inconsistent associations between tooth loss and several cancer ***,we examined the relationship between tooth loss and incident cases of multiple cancers in the Linxian General Population Nutrition Intervention Trial *** this large prospective cohort of over 29,000 participants,there were 3101,1701,626,327,348,and 179 incident esophageal,gastric cardia,gastric noncardia,liver,lung,and colorectal cancer cases,respectively,over 30 years of *** Cox proportional hazards regression models with time-varying covariates were used to estimate hazard ratios(HRs)and 95%confidence intervals(CIs)for the association between tooth loss and cancer outcomes during three time intervals:≤5 years(early),>5 and≤10 years(mid),>10 years(late).Tooth loss was assessed as quartiles of the number of lost teeth in excess of the loess-smoothed,age-specific median number of teeth *** esophageal cancer,the increase in risk associated with the highest quartile of tooth loss was 25%(95%CI:1.02,1.52)in the mid time interval,but the association weakened *** gastric cardia cancer,the increase in risk associated with the highest quartile of tooth loss was 1.34 in both the early(95%CI:1.06,1.71)and mid time intervals(95%CI:1.02,1.76),with no significant associations in the late *** noncardia cancer was only associated with the second quartile of tooth loss in the late time interval(HR=1.54;95%CI:1.16,2.04).All associations between tooth loss and liver,lung,and colorectal cancers were *** loss was associated with risk of esophageal and gastric cancers in this updated analysis from the cohort.

Objective:To investigate the effect of human contraceptive(HC) as ability to suppress the reproductive success of blow fly,Chrysomya megacephala(Fabricius)(***) and offspring under controlled laboratory ***:Adult *** were fed with low(0.036 mg/mL) and high dose(0.072 mg/mL) HC(microgest~?,Thailand),containing levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol,in their drinking water for 7 *** experiments were set;experimentⅠwith fed only in parental males,experimentⅡwith fed only in parental females and experimentⅢwith fed in both males and *** experiments were then maintained for 3 generations after crossing and ***:A lower ovariole production and less fully mature ovarioles were evident in F1,F2 and F3 than control when parent males,females and both had been fed with high dose *** changes during spermatogenesis in F1,F2 and F3 testes was confirmed using transmission electron microscopy(TEm),showing the low level of condensed chromatin,necrotic chromatin,irregularities and degenerated nuclear envelope in the nucleus. In the cytoplasm,mitochondrial swelling,rough endoplasmic reticulum swelling as well as vacuolated cytoplasm were *** for the sperm per se,we found the degenerated nuclei and/ or incomplete mitochondrial derivative,axoneme and vacuolated *** deformity in F1,F2 and F3 ovariole,ultrastructural alteration observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEm) included malformations involving fragile enveloping peritoneal sheath,cracked ovarioles, peel away chorion,crumbled eggshell and incomplete development;whereas TEm presented malformed and disorganized mass of cells,proteic yolk granules and vacuolated vesicles. Ecologic study of serum selenium and upper gastrointestinal cancers in Iran

AIm:Both observational and experimental studies have shown that higher selenium status reduces the risk of upper gastrointestinal cancers in selenium deficient populations. Recent cancer registry data have shown very different rates of esophageal cancer(EC)and gastric cancer(GC)in four Provinces of Iran,namely Ardabil,mazandaran,Golestan, and *** aim of this study was to have a preliminary assessment of the hypothesis that high rates of EC in Golestan and high rates of GC in Ardabil may be partly attributable to selenium deficiency. mETHODS:We measured serum selenium in 300 healthy adults from An:labil(n=100),mazandaran(n=50),Golestan (n=100),and Kerman(n=50),using inductively coupled plasma,with dynamic reaction cell,mass spectrometry(ICP- DRC-mS)at the US Centers for Disease Control(Atlanta, Georgia). RESULTS:The median serum selenium concentrations were very different in the four *** medians(IQR)for selenium in Ardabil,mazandarn,Golestan,and Kerman were 82(75-94),123(111-132),155(141-173),and 119 (110-128)μg/L,respectively(Pm(r^2=0.76). The proportion of the populations with a serum selenium more than 90 μg/L(the concentration at which serum selenoproteins are saturated)was 100% in Golestan, Kerman,and mazandaran but only 29% in Ardabil. CONCLUSION:Our findings suggest that selenium defidency is not a major contributor to the high incidence of EC seen in northeastern Iran,but it may play a role in the high incidence of GC in Ardabil Province. ＜正＞Tree shrews are nocturnally sleeping,primate-related animals that have been extensively studied in a welldeveloped model of social *** sleep has received minimal *** a first step in assessing their utility as a model of the effects of social stress on sleep,we examined sleep,activity and core body temperature recorded via telemetry under baseline and chronic stress *** adult male tree shrews（weight 120-140 g） were intraperitoneally implanted with transmitters（DataSciences TL11m2-ETA-F20） for recording EEG,EmG,activity and core body temperature. The animals were maintained on a 12-12h light-dark *** stress was induced by placing two males in a single cage,but separated by wire *** wire mesh was removed daily for 1.0 h immediately before lights off to allow physical *** states were visually scored based on EEG,EmG and *** 24 h,the percentage of baseline time （mean±SEm） spent sleeping was 51±2%for total sleep,43±2%for NREm and 7.8±0.4%for *** the dark period, the percentage of time spent sleeping was 78±1.2%for total sleep,75±2%for NREm and 97±1.3%for REm,whereas percentage of time with recorded activity was 9±3%.The duration of dark period NREm episodes ranged from 1.0 to 25 （mean duration:4±0.2） and the duration of dark period REm episodes ranged from 0.5 to 8（mean duration:2±0.2）.Approximately 5%of REm episodes were greater than 5 min in *** core body temperature（℃） was 36.5±0.05 during the dark period and 39.2±0.8 during the light *** the dark period,average temperatures during active wakefulness, quiet wakefulness,NREm and REm were 37.3±0.25,36.8±0.2,36.4±0.1 and 36.2±0.1,*** chronic social stress,the animals exhibited reduced activity and elevated core body temperature compared to *** results confirm and describe greater nocturnal sleep in tree shrews and provide novel data on temperature changes during sleep. Tibiofemoral Joint Forces during the Stance Phase of Gait after ACL Reconstruction

The main goals of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) are to restore knee function and prevent development of osteoarthritis (OA). However, the incidence of early-onset OA remains higher in patients following ACLR. The purpose of this study was to compare the computed tibiofemoral joint (TFJ) forces and muscle forces of ACLR knees to those of BmI-matched control subjects during the stance phase of gait. We hypothesized that the use of principal component analysis would allow us to characterize alterations in three-dimensional TFJ loads and muscle forces after ACLR as compared to a healthy control population. Of the eight ACLR knees, four displayed an abnormal TFJ compressive force. In three of these four ACLR knees that displayed abnormal compressive forces, one of the major muscles/muscle groups crossing the knee also deviated from the control group. We believe that each subject has a unique response to their injury, reconstructive surgery, and rehabilitation.

目的：探讨内镜下联合应用射频消融系统（RFA）和内镜下黏膜切除术治疗范围广泛的非表浅平坦型早期食管鳞状细胞癌及癌前病变的治疗效果。方法北京协和医学院中国医学科学院肿瘤医院内镜科于2010年1月对经活检病理确诊的2例鳞状细胞癌、1例鳞状上皮中度不典型增生（mGIN）和1例鳞状上皮重度不典型增生（HGIN）患者予以内镜下RFA术联合内镜黏膜切除术治疗，总结分析术中、术后和随访情况。结果4例患者均顺利完成治疗，其中RFA时间为3～12（8．3） min，内镜下黏膜切除术时间6～20（10．3） min；所有病例均无出血和穿孔的发生。2例鳞状细胞癌患者病变长度分别为12和8 cm，非表浅平坦性病变长度分别为3和4 cm；mGIN患者的病变长度6 cm ，非表浅平坦性病变长度2 cm；HGIN患者的病变长度12 cm ，非表浅平坦型病变长度1 cm；术后病理与术前活检病理一致。4例术后均出现狭窄，其中2例为轻度狭窄，未予处理；2例为重度狭窄，行内镜下水囊扩张术均缓解。平均住院时间3d。3例经过3月及1年以上随访，治疗区域活检病理均达到完全缓解；余1例术后3月复查可见散在的碘染色阳性灶，活检病理为HGIN，分别追加RFA治疗后达到完全缓解。结论 RFA联合内镜下黏膜切除术治疗大面积非表浅平坦型早期食管鳞状细胞癌和癌前病变是安全有效的。

Alkaloids, Limonoids and Phenols from meliaceae Species Decrease Survival and Performance of <i>Hypsipyla Grandella</i>Larvae

meliaceae plants are distinguished by the attack of the shootborer Hypsipyla grandella and also for the occurrence of limonoids, alkaloids and phenolic compounds. Such compounds extracted from leaves of meliaceae species Cedrela odorata L., Swietenia macrophylla King, Khaya senegalensis, Toona ciliata, and C. odorata grafted onto T. ciliata plants, were tested on C. odorata leaf disks to determine their effects on survival and performance of H. grandella larvae. Larval survival was assessed 2, 10 and 25 days after starting the bioassays. Leaf consumption and weight gain per larva, days to pupa and to adult stages, pupal weight and length, and moth wing appearance were assessed for larval performance. The three compunds from the four meliaceae species and the grafted combination affected (P ≤ 0.02) larval leaf consumption, weight gain, time to pupa and to adult stages, wing development and larval survival of H. grandella. Pupa weight (P = 0.78, F = 0.72, d.f. = 18, 160) and length (P = 0.48, F = 0.98, d.f. = 18, 160) were similar regardless of the coumpound used. Limonoid reduced larval survival on the three dates of evaluation. Alkaloids decreased leaf consumption, weight gain of larvae and time needed to reach pupa and adult stages. Alkaloids from T. ciliata and phenols from C. odorata were the best coumpounds to reduce leaf consumption and weight gain. Alkaloids from the grafted plants caused 20% of H. grandella adults to form abnormal wings.
