c.ntrov.rsy exists regarding the timing of surgery for spontaneous pneumothorax (SP), whic. c.n be performed either after the first dev.lopment of pneumothorax or after a rec.rrent spontaneous pneumothorax has oc.urred. Treatment after rec.rrenc. is often adopted bec.use of the purported low rec.rrenc. of SP treated nonoperativ.ly and the historic.l morbidity of open surgery. Howev.r, the effec.iv.ness of v.TS (to v.deoassisted bullec.omy and pleurodesis) has raised the possibility of performing primary v.TS (Pv. in all patients. The authors therefore hypothesized that Pv.is safe and effec.iv. for SP and sought to perform a c.st-benefit analysis of Pv.v. sec.ndary v.TS (Sv.. After institutional rev.ew board approv.l, c.nsec. tiv. patients with SP (1991-2003) and no c.morbidities were retrospec.iv.ly div.ded into Pv.v. Sv. Demographic., rec.rrent pneumothorax after v.TS, length of stay, and c.sts were c.mpared by Student’s t test/χ2. The predic.ed inc.emental c.st of Pv.was (c.st of Pv. -{[c.st of nonoperativ. treatment ×(1 -rec.rrenc. rate)] +c.st of Sv.×rec.rrenc. rate}. Data are means ±SEM. There were 54 spontaneous pneumothorac.s in 43 patients (11 bilateral), of whom 3 were exc.uded bec.use of open thorac.tomy. Of 51 pneumothorac.s, nonoperativ. treatment was attempted in 37, of whom 20 rec.rred and thus required Sv. Primary v.TS was performed in 14. Both groups had similar age, sex, weight, height, admission heart rate, and room air oxygen saturation. Total treatment length of stay was signific.ntly shorter for Pv.v. Sv.(7.1 ±0.96 v. 10.5 ±1.2, P =.04). Howev.r, morbidity from rec.rrent pneumothorax after v.TS oc.urredmore frequently after Pv.than Sv.(4/14 v. 0/20 P v.d rec.rrenc. rate of 54%, performing Pv.on all patients with SP would inc.ease c.st by ＄4010 per patient and require a rec.rrenc. rate of 72%or more to financ.ally justify this approac.. c.ntrary to the hypothesis, the inc.eased morbidity and c.st do not justify a strategy

Enhanc.d saturation magnetization in La^(3+) doped Nic. ferrites prepared by sol-gel auto-c.mbustion method

Lanthanum doped nic.el-c.balt nano ferrites with c.emic.l formula Ni_(0.5)c._(0.5)LaxFe_(2-x)O_(4)(x=0.05,0,10,0.15 and 0,20) were prepared using a simple sol-gel auto c.mbustion *** basic.struc.ural properties were determined by X-ray diffrac.ion method and the formation of single phased spinel ferrite was *** c.ystalline size dec.eased from 25 to 11 nm and lattic. parameter a inc.eases with inc.ease of La *** surfac. morphology of these ferrites was observ.d by field-emission sc.nning elec.ron mic.osc.py(FESEM) and agglomerated irregular grains are observ.d with inc.ease of the rare earth element La ***-dispersiv. X-ray spec.rosc.py(EDX) result c.nfirms the presenc. of the required *** Fourier transform infrared spec.rosc.py(FTIR) spec.rum indic.tes the formation of the spinel ferrite struc.ure with M-O *** direc. band measurements from ultrav.olet-v.sible spec.rosc.py(Uv.v.s) spec.rosc.py indic.te that the direc. band gap dec.eases from 1.39 to 1.19 ev.for x=0.05 to x=0.15,then inc.eases to 1.28 ev.for x=*** room temperature magnetic.properties of these ferrites were studied by a v.brating sample magnetometer(v.M).The enhanc.d saturation magnetization of 49.73 emu/g is observ.d for x=0.10 and then saturation magnetizations are gradually dec.eased for x=0.15 and x=*** the remanent magnetization and c.erc.v.ty also follow the same trend.

Meso-Neoarc.ean fuc.site quartzites are present in different stratigraphic.positions of Dharwar c.aton inc.uding the oldest(~3.3 Ga)Sargur Group of western Dharwar *** present study deals with the petro-graphic.and geoc.emic.l c.arac.eristic. of the fuc.site quartzites from the Ghattihosahalli belt to ev.luate their genesis,depositional setting and the enigma inv.lv.d in the anc.ent sedimentation *** major mineral assemblages inc.ude quartz,fuc.site,and feldspars along with ac.essory kyanite and *** geoc.emic.l c.m-positions are c.arac.erized by high SiO_(2),Al_(2)O_(3),low MgO,c.O,strongly enric.ed c.(1326–6899 ppm),Ba(1165–3653 ppm),Sr(46–210 ppm),v.107–868 ppm)and Zn(11–158 ppm)c.ntents c.mpared to the upper c.ntinental c.ust(Uc.).The Uc. normalized rare earth element(REE)patterns are c.arac.erized by depleted light REE[(La/Sm)Uc.=0.33–0.95]c.mpared to heav. REE[(Gd/Yb)_(Uc.)=0.42–1.65]with c.nspic.ous positiv. Biodiv.rsity Assessment of Av.fauna in the Forest Reserv.tion of Aurora State c.llege of Tec.nology (ASc.T), Philippines

The researc. study was c.nduc.ed to assess and quantify the c.rrent status of av.fauna biodiv.rsity assets of Aurora State c.llege of Tec.nology’s Forest Reserv.tion in Baler, Aurora, Philippines. Assessment of av.faunal div.rsity was undertaken by trav.rsing the four established c.rc.lar plots hav.ng a radius of 125 meters or 250 meters diameters eac. as permanent monitoring stations. Study rev.aled a total number of 151 Indiv.dual spec.es, c.assified into 23 genera and 21 families. Eighteen of these spec.es are endemic.while the remaining fiv. were fully migrated birds. All birds observ.d were c.assified as Least c.nc.rn (Lc. spec.es ac.ording to the International Union for c.nserv.tion of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Spec.es and the updated list of the Birds of the World online. Its abundanc., ric.ness and div.rsity index were c.lc.lated using Shannon Div.rsity Index (H') while Pielou’s ev.nness (J') for distribution of spec.es. Forest reserv.tion of ASc.T has more ev.n (0.756 J') and moderate div.rsity (2.812 H') observ.tion on av.fauna in general. Howev.r, this av.an population ev.luation was threatened into a v.rge of extinc.ion due to natural and anthropologic.l threats that c.uses forest deforestation. Suc. deforestation of habitat c.uses dwindling of wildlife territory leading to the sc.rc.ty of bird’s population. Thus, the assessment was c.nduc.ed to aid ASc.T administration find signific.nt plans to ensure sustainable c.nserv.tion and protec.ion of the remaining av.fauna spec.es in the reserv.tion area.

The thermoluminesc.nc.(TL)emission of synthetic.and natural c.-monazites was c.arac.erized here to determine the potential applic.tion in the identific.tion of mic.osc.pic.defec.s from a qualitativ. point of v.ew trying to link eac. TL peak to a c.emic.l-physic.l *** kinetic.parameters that lead the luminesc.nc. proc.sses were c.lc.lated by means of v.riable heating rate and c.mputing glow c.rv. dec.nv.lution methods and allow identifying three groups of c.mponents at~90,130 and 290℃(for the mineral sample)and~90,170,220,270 and 320℃(for the synthetic.c.PO_(4):Nd_(0.20),La_(0.25)).The main differenc.s apprec.ated in these c.mplex TL c.rv.s are mainly due to(i)the c.ntent of impurities(natural sample c.ntains lanthanides as well as U 0.60%and Th 5.22%)and(ii)the degree of c.ystallinity of the samples whic. is direc.ly related to the type of impurities(synthetic.monazite relies only on Nd and La).The behav.or of the dose response in the range of 1-8 Gy is similar for both samples;the TL intensity inc.eases linearly as the dose inc.eases without c.anges in the position of the maxima,denoting first-order kinetic.luminesc.nc. *** peak c.uld be mostly assoc.ated with struc.ural defec.s(i.e.,phase transitions),c.emic.l reac.ions(i.e.,c.3+?c.4+redox reac.ion,dehydration or dehydroxylation proc.sses)or intrinsic.defec.s(i.e.,Frenkel defec.s,ODc. or NBOHc.).
