An innovative, cost-effective, user-friendly and portable device （dew sensor） to directly detect condensation on glass surfaces was developed within the EC-VIDRIO project （contract No. EVK4-CT-2001-00045）, aimed at finding sustainable solutions to preserve ancient stained glass windows. The results of the research showed that the direct survey of condensation with the new sensor is more accurate and reliable than the traditional indirect microclimatic measurements. Since the construction of the first prototype, the dew sensor was developed further, continuously improved, validated in the laboratory and applied successfully on different surfaces at sites of interest in the field of Cultural Heritage; on the stained glass windows in the Saint Urbain Basilica of Troyes （France）, Sainte Chapelle of Paris （France） and Cologne Cathedral （Germany）; on stone walls in Petrarca＇s Tomb （Padua, Italy） and the Hagar Qim Temple （Malta）. Now the sensor is being used in the Lascaux Caves （France）. The newly built device was patented （PTC/EP2005/050665） and gave such interesting results that the Italian Ministry of University and Research financially supported a spin-off project that has lead to the creation of a new company （R.E.D.s.r.l.） in order to develop the prototype further and to produce the sensor at industrial scale.

T-wave alternans (TWA), consisting in an alternation of the electrocardiographic (ECG) repolarization segment (T-wave), is a promising index of the risk of sudden cardiac death. By definition, it is characterized by a frequency component, termed fTWA, that matches half heart rate. The heart-rate adaptive match filter (AMF) based method is a technique for automatic TWA identification from the digital ECG. Aim of the present study was to provide a complete technical description of the filter able to explain its methodological principles. The AMF is usually realized as a 6th order Butterworth filter with a narrow (0.12 Hz) passing band centered in fTWA. It is applied in a bidirectional fashion, so that final filtering order is 12. While extracting the TWA component, the AMF simultaneously filters out every ECG component including noise and artefacts, and thus results are very robust. Goodness of the technique was tested using 8 synthetic ECG tracings corrupted by typical noisy factors, such as white random noise, baseline wanderings, heart-rate variability, and others. Six ECG tracings were affected by 100 μV TWA, whereas two were not. Results indicate that the AMF-based method is able to prevent false-positive and false-negative detections and, thus, represents a useful tool for a reliable TWA identification.

Piodermal gangrenosum (PG) is an uncommon ulcerative cutaneous dermatosis associated with a variety of systemic diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), arthritis, leukaemia, hepatitis, and primary billiary cirrhosis. Other cutaneous ulceration resembling PG had been described in literature. There has been neither laboratory finding nor histological feature diagnostic of PG, and diagnosis of PG is mainly made based on the exclusion criteria. We present here a patient, with ulcerative colitis (UC) who was referred to the emergency section with a large and rapidly evolving cutaneous ulceration. Laboratory and microbiological investigation associated with histological findings of the ulcer specimen allowed us to exclude autoimmune and systemic diseases as well as immuno-proliferative disorders. An atypical presentation of PG with UC was diagnosed. Pulse boluses of i.v. methyl-prednisolone were started, and after tapering steroids, complete resolution of the skin lesion was achieved in 3 wk. The unusual rapid healing of the skin ulceration with steroid mono-therapy and the atypical cutaneous presentation in this patient as well as the risk of misdiagnosis of PG in the clinical practice were discussed.

This paper presents reflections on proposals to merge Mathematics and Geography when teaching undergraduates from inter- and trans-disciplinary spatial models using mathematical modeling to enable spatial analysis and visualization through GIS—Geographic Information Systems. It brings forward an approach to Geography with new technologies integrating it with Statistics and Computer Science among other subjects. Thus, it describes some practical cases that are examples of geographical problems solved mathematically. The results show that GIS can be an educational tool for teaching both Geography and Mathematics.

The presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in produced water is of environmental concern due to their toxic properties. PAH analysis in complex samples requires pre-treatment to enrich the fraction con- taining analytes, and eliminate matrix interferences. The objective of this work was to develop and validate an analytical methodology for determination of PAH in produced water, using solid phase extraction (SPE) and analysis by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID). Average recoveries of PAH from produced water enriched at two concentration levels varied from 30.9% for naphthalene to 119.1% for chrysene (RSD between 3.8% and 22.2%). The linear range was between 0.5 and 50.0 μg?mL–1, with regres- sion coefficients better than 0.998. Detection limits were between 0.01 and 0.04 μg?L–1, and quantitation lim- its were between 0.05 and 0.16 μg?L–1. The validated method was applied to samples of produced water treated for disposal, in which concentrations varied from 3.5 μg?L–1 for phenanthrene to 44.3 μg?L–1 for naphthalene ( = 177.7 μg?L–1). The method was also applied to seawater samples, in which 13 PAH compounds were detected ( = 60.27 μg?L–1), probably derived from pyrogenic sources.

BACKGROUND Radiofrequency ablation(RFA)and microwave ablation(MWA)represent the standard of care for patients with early hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)who are unfit for *** incidence of reported adverse events is low,ranging from 2.4%to 13.1%for RFA and from 2.6%to 7.5%for *** tract(GIT)injury is even more infrequent(0.11%),but usually requires surgery with an unfavourable *** to its low incidence and the retrospective nature of the studies,the literature reporting this feared complication is heterogeneous and in many cases lacks information on tumour characteristics,comorbidities and treatment *** SUMMARY A 77-year-old man who had undergone extended right hepatectomy for HCC was diagnosed with early disease recurrence with a small nodule compatible with HCC in the Sg4b segment of the liver with a subcapsular *** was treated with percutaneous RFA and a few week later he was urgently admitted to the Surgery ward for abdominal pain and fever.A subcutaneous abscess was diagnosed and treated by percutaneous drainage.A fistulous tract was then documented by the passage of contrast material from the gastric antrum to the abdominal *** oesophagogastroduodenoscopy confirmed a circular wall defect at the lesser curvature of gastric antrum, leading directly to the purulentabdominal collection. An over-the-scope clip (OTSC) was used to successfullyclose the defectCONCLUSIONThis is the first reported case of RFA-related GIT injury to have been successfullytreated with an OTSC, which highlights the role of this endoscopic treatment forthe management of this complication.

Within today＇s product development process, various FE-simulations （finite element） for the functional validation of the desired characteristics are made to avoid expensive testing with real components. Those simulations are performed with great effort for discretization, use of simulations conditions, like taking different non-linearities （i.e., material behavior, etc.） into account, to create meaningful results. Despite knowing the effects of deformations occurring during the production processes, always the non-deformed design model of a CAD-system （computer aided design） is used for the FE-simulations. It seems rather doubtful that further refinement of simulation methods makes sense, if the real manufactured geometry of the component is not considered for in the simulation. For an efficient exploit of the potential of simulation methods, an approach has been developed which offers a geometry model for simulation based on the existing CAD-model but with integrated production deviations as soon as a first prototype is at hand by adapting the FE-mesh to the real, 3D surface detected geometry.
