Root proliferation in native perennial grasses of arid Patagonia,Argentina

Pappophorum vaginatum is the most abundant c4 perennial grass desirable to livestock in rangelands of northeastern Patagonia, Argentina. We hypothesized that （1） defoliation reduce net primary productivity, and root length density and weight in the native species, and （2） root net primary productivity, and root length density and weight, are greater in P. vaginatum than in the other, less desirable, native species （i.e., Aristida spegazzinfi, A. subulata and Sporobolus cryptandrus）. Plants of all species were either exposed or not to a severe defoliation twice a year during two growing seasons. Root proliferation was measured using the cylinder method. cylindrical, iron structures, wrapped up using nylon mesh, were buried diagonally from the periphery to the center on individual plants. These structures, initially filled with soil without any organic residue, were dug up from the soil on 25 April 2008, after two successive defoliations in mid-spring 2007. During the second growing season （2008-2009）, cylinders were destructively harvested on 4 April 2009, after one or two defoliations in mid- and/or late-spring, respectively. Roots grown into the cylinders were obtained after washing the soil manually. Defoliation during two successive years did reduce the study variables only after plants of all species were defoliated twice, which supported the first hypothesis. The greater root net primary productivity, root length den- sity and weight in P. vaginatum than in the other native species, in support of the second hypothesis, could help to explain its greater abundance in rangelands of Argentina.

Objective: Influenza afflicts approximately 5% - 20% of the US population annually. Although prevalence statistics are useful, they are insufficient to understand completely influenza on a health care system. This study estimated Nebraska’s annual hospitalization and comorbidity rates due to influenza from 2007 to 2011. methods: Influenza was defined according to IcD-9-cm primary codes beginning with 487 or 488 in hospital discharge records. The comorbidities of patients with influenza were defined according to IcD-9-cm secondary diagnosis codes. Results: The highest yearly age-adjusted hospitalization rates were 30.6 and 31.1 per 100,000 populations for 2008 and 2009, respectively. In 2008, the highest hospitalization rate was among those aged 65 yrs and older;in 2009, the highest rate was among those younger than 5 yrs. Asthma was the most frequent comorbidity overall and among those younger than 50 yrs. conversely, hypertension and heart failure were the most frequent comorbidities among those aged 50 yrs and older. conclusion: These findings provide a better understanding of the influenza burden and may contribute to developing more effective influenza prevention strategies.

BAcKGROUND The usefulness of a mandatory joint aspiration before re-implantation in patients with a cement spacer already in place is *** To evaluate the role of culturing synovial fluid obtained by joint aspiration before re-implantation in patients who underwent a two-stage septic *** A retrospective observational study was conducted,including patients that underwent a two-stage septic revision(hip or knee)from 2010 to *** the first stage revision and according to intraoperative culture results,all patients were treated with an antibiotic protocol for 6-8 *** 2 wk without antibiotics,a culture of synovial fluid was *** results of these cultures were recorded and compared with cultures obtained during re-implantation *** Forty-one patients(20 hip and 21 knee spacers)were included in the final *** 39 cases,the culture of synovial fluid was negative,while in the remaining 2 cases(knee spacers)no analysis was possible due to dry *** 5 of the patients,two or more intraoperative cultures taken during the re-implantation surgery were *** We found no evidence to support mandatory joint aspiration before re-implantation in patients with a cement spacer in place.

The cardiovascular aspects of a ménière’s disease population——A pilot study

Introduction:mD is considered a rare *** adequate model that explains mD's pathophysiology is not well ***,the vascular theory of the disease has been ***:To characterize a mD population according to its cardiovascular risk and correlate it to the mD clinical ***:In this retrospective chart study the data of 31 mD patients observed between January 2017 and April 2018 in a tertiary university hospital were *** included in the study were diagnosed according to the Barany Society *** follow-ups,patients with autoimmune disease,atopy or allergy,major psychiatric disease and migraine were ***,gender,cardiovascular risk factors,audiometric and vestibular parameters,occurrence of mD attacks in the previous 6 months,vestibular medication in course and time course of mD were recorded and compared between groups(with and without cardiovascular risk factors).Results:31 patients(61.3%females)mean aged 60.3 years(±9.7)were studied.74%of the population had at least one risk factor and 51.6%of patients had attacks in the last 6 *** was a statistically significant difference in the occurrence of mD attacks in the last 6 months(p=0.014)between mD patients with and without risk *** PTA thresholds were higher and speech discrimination was lower in individuals with more cardiovascular risk ***:Treatment of mD focusing on vascular risk factors may allow a better control of symptoms and result in a decreased need for ablative procedures in this disorder.

Phosphorus Adsorption of Some Brazilian Soils in Relations to Selected Soil Properties

A major nutritional problem to crops grown in highly weathered Brazilian soils is phosphorus (P) deficiencies linked to their low availability and the capacity of the soils to fix P in insoluble forms. Our studies examined factors that might influence P behavior in soils of the Amazon region. This study was conducted to evaluate the maximum phosphate adsorption capacity (mPAc) of the soils developed from mafic rocks (diabase), their parent materials and other factors resulting in the formation of eutrophic soils having A chernozemic horizon associated with Red Nitosols (Alfisol) and Red Latosols (Oxisol) of the Amazonian environment. The mPAc was determined in triplicates as a function of the remnant P values. The different concentrations used to determine the mPAc allowed maximum adsorption values to be reached for all soils. The Latosol (Oxisol) and Nitosol (Alfisol) soils presented higher phosphate adsorption values that were attributed to the oxidic mineralogy and high clay texture while the chernosol (mollisol) soils presented the lowest phosphate adsorption values.

＜正＞The cyanobacterial neurotoxin,β-N-methylamino -L-alanine（BmAA）,has been suggested as an important environmental factor for neurodegenerative disease such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis Parkinsonism dementia complex（ALS/ PDc）in *** was reportedly produced by the majority of cyanobacterial isolates surveyed,both free and symbiotic living, in freshwater as well as marine *** this study, we report two methods using liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry（Lc-ESI-mS/mS）each coupled with a different type of hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography （HILIc）column to detect *** detection limit, repeatability and recovery of BmAA in both methods,which were based on tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry and multiple reaction monitoring（mRm）scan mode at m/z 119 to102 were very good.A third method using AQc-derivatized BmAA was also used for *** cultures of microcystis aeruginosa and Nostoc *** from chinese freshwater were collected and analyzed for both free and protein-bound BmAA. cultures of two strains of *** collected in four stages were analyzed in order to compare the presence of BmAA in different *** was detected at very low levels only in the AQc derivatized *** free or protein-bound BmAA toxin were found in the axenic cultures of cyanobacteria using non-derivatized *** suggest that cyanobacteria grown under specific culture conditions may be relatively free of BmAA and potentially useful for commercial development.
