Sensorial Evaluation and Physical Chemical Characterization of a Beverage Based on Whey and β-Glucans as a Potential Prevention of Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis

Whey and B-glucans are functional food ingredients that contribute to the prevention of non-communicable diseases. The objective of the study was to develop a functional beverage based on whey, B-glucans, and blackberry concentrate for the prevention of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, determining its sensory, physicochemical, and nutritional qualities. The following phases were developed: 1) formulation with 75%, 85%, and 90% whey and 25%, 15%, and 10% blackberry concentrate, with a fixed amount of 0.243 g β-glucans in 100 ml;2) microbiological analysis to ensure the safety of the beverage;3) sensory analysis with untrained panelists to assess the degree of preference (appearance, color, odor, flavor, viscosity, acidity, sweetness), and general acceptance, with a seven-point hedonic scale to rate the level of acceptability;4) physicochemical and nutritional characterization of the beverage with the highest acceptance. An experimental design using complete random blocks was employed. Data analysis was performed with variance (ANDEVA) and mean DUNCAN separation at a 95% confidence level, using SAS®. A correlation study was conducted on acceptance analysis. A nutritional label was developed for the control beverage and the treatment with the highest acceptance. The formulation with 75% whey, 25% blackberry concentrate, and 0.243 g of β-glucan obtained the highest acceptance, with flavor and sweetness being the attributes that contributed to its acceptance. Nutritionally, the beverage with 80 cal, would be considered fortified with fiber (2 g), free of cholesterol, sodium, and saturated fat, according to the Central American Technical Regulation on Nutritional Labeling (Version 67.01.60:10). It is recommended that the effect of this beverage be measured to determine the benefits.

A comparative evaluation of methicillin-resistant staphylococci isolated from harness racing-horses,breeding mares and riding-horses in Italy

Objective:To investigate the prevalence of methicillin-resistant staphylococci(MRS)which is a potencial risk factor of transmission between animals and humans in different types of horses(harness racing-horses,breeding mares and riding-horses)and to compare the antimicrobial resistance of the ***:A total of 191 healthy horses,housed at different locations of the Campania Region(Italy),were included in the *** swab samples were collected from each nostril of the *** mecA gene was detected by a nested PCR *** susceptibility was tested for each ***:MRS was isolated from nasal samples of 68/191(35.6%;95%CI:28.9%-42.9%)healthy *** isolates were coagulase-negative with the exception of two coagulase-positive MRS strains,identified as Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius.2/83(2.4%;95%,CI:0.4%-9.2%).Interestingly,both coagulase-positive MRS isolates were from harness *** horses also presented a significantly higher positivity for MRS(53.3%;95%CI:40.1%-66.1%)than the breeding mares and riding-horses *** susceptibility testing showed difference between isolates due to different origins except for an almost common high resistance to aminopenicillins,such as ampicillin and ***:It can be concluded that harness racing-horses may act as a significant reservoir of MRS as compared to breeding mares and riding-horses.

An update on microbiological causes of canine otitis externa in Campania Region,Italy

Objective: To update the recent knowledge of the microbiological causes of canine otitis externa in Campania Region(Italy) and the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of the isolated ***: A total of 122 dogs were examined by otoscopy, and auricular swab samples were collected from both ears in 74 dogs presenting clinical bilateral otitis and from single ears in 48 dogs displaying clinical unilateral otitis. Cytological examination,bacteriological analysis and antimicrobial susceptibility tests were ***: Thirty-one out of 122 dogs were positive for yeast species(25.4%, 95% confidence interval(CI): 18.2%–34.2%) with a higher prevalence of Malassezia pachydermatis(21/31 isolates, 67.7%, CI: 48.5%–82.7%), and a total of 91 out of 122 dogs were positive for bacterial species(74.6%; CI: 65.8%–81.8%) with a higher prevalence of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius(45/143 isolates, 31.5%, CI: 24.1%–39.8%). These results are the first description of Streptococcus agalactiae-associated otitis. The yeasts isolated showed high levels of susceptibility to all antifungal agents tested; on the contrary all the isolated bacterial strains were highly resistant to at least four out of ten antimicrobial classes. Both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria showed high resistance to amoxicillin/clavulanate and kanamycin hence they are not recommended as initial empirical therapy for the otitis ***: This update illustrates an increase in antibiotic resistances providing an insight into the current knowledge of the therapeutic procedures followed on canine otitis externa in Italy. It also emphasizes the importance of considering the results of the microbiological and sensitivity tests to decide on an appropriate antibiotic therapy.

Morphological effects of autoclaved diet on the myenteric neurons of rats

AIM:To evaluate the effect of autoclaved diet on the jejunum neurons of the myenteric plexus of rats during their ***:The experimental groups were made up of rats going through weaning whose mothers received either an autoclaved or a non-autoclaved diet during gestation and lactation,and rats that were fed the same diet as their mothers during the post-weaning *** order to measure the neurons'body profile and to quantify the number of neurons per area,preparations were stained by the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-diaphorase ***:No significant changes were observed in rats'body weight or in the number of neurons regardless of the diet used(P>0.05) .There was a decrease in the jejunum-ileum length in rats treated with an autoclaved diet(P<0.05) .An increase in the neuronal cross-sectional area was seen in rats that had received the autoclaved diet,an effect that was significant for animals undergoing *** addition,all observed factors showed significant differences when related to the age of the ***:The autoclaved diet did not alter the quantity of neurons,but increased their cell body area,suggesting changes similar to those observed in protein deficiency.

Conjunctival cytological examination,bacteriological culture,and antimicrobial resistance profiles of healthy Mediterranean buffaloes(Bubalus bubalis) from Southern Italy

Objective: To assess normal conjunctival cytological and bacteriological/fungal flora features in the Mediterranean buffalo(Bubalus bubalis).Methods: Swabs were taken from the inferior conjunctival sac of both eyes of 57 healthy female buffaloes aged 24–36 months, with no evidence of ocular disease, farmed in Campania region(Southern Italy), for microbiological analysis. Conjunctival eye specimens of both eyes were subsequently obtained by a cyto-brush, for cytological *** antimicrobial susceptibility of bacterial isolates was also determined using the diskdiffusion method on Mueller Hinton agar ***: Cytological examination of conjunctival swab specimens(114 eyes) revealed epithelial cells(basal, intermediate, columnar and super ficial) in all samples, whereas neutrophils, lymphocytes and plasma cells were present in 70%, 10% and 2% of samples,respectively. Microorganisms, for a total of 261 aerobic bacteria and 6 fungi, were isolated from 112/114 conjunctival samples [98.25%; 95% con fidence interval(CI): 93.18–99.70]. Only two conjunctival swabs did not yield bacteria and/or fungi(2/114, 1.75%;95% CI: 0.30–6.82). Gram-positive aerobes were most commonly cultured(181/261,69.35%; 95% CI: 63.31–74.81), with Enterococcus faecium and Staphylococcus lentus predominating. Escherichia coli was the most frequently isolated as Gram-negative bacteria(80/261, 30.65%; 95% CI: 25.19–36.69). The antimicrobial resistance patterns of the isolated bacteria showed amoxycillin/clavulanic acid and cephalothin as the least sensitive antibiotics for both Gram-positive and Gram-negative ***: These results provided first information on normal conjunctival ocular micro flora and cytological features in Mediterranean buffalo.

Penicillin-Resistant <i>Aerococcus viridans</i>Bacteremia Associated with Bovine Severe Respiratory Syndrome

Aerococcus viridans, a less frequently isolated bacteria, is a gram-positive, catalase-negative coccus, found singly or in tetrads, with biochemical and growth characteristics of streptococci and enterococci. This microorganism, usually susceptible to penicillin, is often found in the environment and is infrequently associated with human/veterinary infections. We described a case of Holstein Friesian female calf, 150-day-old, affected by respiratory emergencies. Following the clinical signs, radiographic analysis and bacteriological/molecular examinations carried out on blood culture, a diagnosis of severe broncho-pulmonary disease associate with a multidrug-resistant A. viridans bacteremia was done. The present case highlights the invasive nature of a saprophytic bacterium showing a broad profile of antibiotic-resistance including β-lactams. Furthermore, this report confirms that the effectiveness of an antibiotic therapy is based primarily on a sure diagnosis including susceptibility testing.

Association between Hyperglycemia, C-Reactive Protein and Other Risk Factors in Patients at Cardiovascular Risk

Type 2 diabetes (DM2) is a syndrome characterized by postprandial hyperglycemia normally due to peripheral resistance to insulin and accounts for approximately 90% of diabetes cases worldwide and it is usually related to dyslipidemia, overweight/obesity and physical inactivity and increase in the risk of cardiovascular disease. This study aimed to compare the metabolic and inflammatory profile of hyperglycemic with non-hyperglycemic subjects in a group of patients undergoing coronary arteriography. Our group of patients showed that 63.16% presented glycaemia above 99 mg/dL (from the hyperglycemic patients, 31 individuals were classified as glucose intolerant and 29 as diabetic). Significant differences were found for glycaemia, LDL-c (Low Density Lipoprotein), and hs-CRP (high sensitivity C reactive protein) levels. Nevertheless it is possible to observe that patients with higher glycaemia showed increased values of Total Cholesterol, Triglycerides, LDL-c, Castelli Index I and II and estimative of LDL-c size particle and decreased HDL-c (High Density Lipoprotein) values. The comparison between hs-CRP levels and biochemical parameters shows significant differences for Body Mass Index, Triglycerides, HDL-c and the estimative of LDL-c particle. Also, the presence of Metabolic Syndrome is more prevalent in patients with high levels of hs-CRP. Diabetes patients have more significant increase in morbidity and mortality than the general population frequently due to further complications associated with the resistance to insulin. It is indispensable to outline the anthropometric and biochemical profile from hyperglycemic patients in order to work on secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

Association between Neck Circumference and Glycemia in Adolescents

Background: The determination of glycemia is an essential element for the diagnosis of diabetes or possible glycemic alterations. The body composition and fat distribution are related to this parameter. The neck circumference (NC) is an anthropometric measure that has been used to evaluate the overweight and accumulation of subcutaneous fat in the upper body, regardless of age. It is also a useful tool to predict insulin resistance and other risk factors. This research aimed to study the relationship between the NC and glycemia in adolescents and, thus, to analyze the applicability of this anthropometric measure in the screening of glycemic alterations in this group. Methods: The study population consisted of 600 adolescents aged 10 to 19 years. Data on sex, birth date, NC, fasting blood glucose and stage of sexual maturation was collected. Results: The evolution of sexual maturation generated a significant difference in the NC in both sexes, but not affected glycemia. Thus, the association between NC and glycemia was investigated according to this parameter. Among the pre-pubertal adolescents, the NC was significantly higher among those who had glycemia within borderline values, and the opposite occurred among pubertal adolescents. Among post-pubertal adolescents, NC was similar between the two groups. A negative correlation was found in all adolescents, as well as among those who were in the pubertal and post-pubertal stages of sexual maturation. Differently, adolescents in the pre-pubertal stage showed a positive correlation between the NC and the biochemical parameters. Conclusion: This study showed that the relationship between the NC and glycemia varies according to the stage of sexual maturation. As this maturation factor is rarely considered in the glycemic alteration screening, the use of the NC in this age group is not safe and requires further investigations.

Background:In January 2005,Rasulov et *** published"First experience in the use of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)for the treatment of a patient with deep skin burns".Here,we present the first ever treated patient with cadaveric bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells(CMSCs)in the history of ***:A young man,who severely burned 60%of his total body surface with 30%of full-thickness burns while working with a grass trimmer that exploded,was involved in the *** were obtained from the bone marrow of a cadaver donor in a routine procurement procedure of CUCAIBA,the Province of Buenos Aires,Argentina,Ministry of Health,Transplantation Agency,cultured,expanded,and applied on the burned surfaces using a fibrin spray after early ***:So far,our preliminary experience and our early results have been very impressive showing an outstanding safety data as well as some impressive good results in the use of ***:Based on al this,we think that improvements in the use of stem cells for burns might be possible in the near future and a lot of time as well as many lives could be saved by many other research teams all over the *** will probably be a real scientific opportunity in Regenerative Medicine as well as in Transplantation.

Association of Vitamin D Levels with the Metabolic Profile and Sexual Maturation Stage of Adolescents

The deficiency of Vitamin D (VD) is widely prevalent worldwide in adults, but many studies show that this deficiency also affects adolescents and may be considered a global public health problem. The VD levels are particularly significant in adolescents since it influences several aspects of growth, development, and puberty. During this phase of life, both girls and boys develop reproductive aspects, and secondary sexual characteristics and the adequate nutritional status appear to be the prerequisite for normal pubertal development. Due to the importance of VD in adolescents, the objective of this study was to investigate the association of the levels of this vitamin with glycemic, lipid, and anthropometric profile and sexual maturation stages of adolescents. Anthropometric (weight and height) and biochemical (fasting glycemia, total cholesterol, HDL-c, LDL-c, and triglycerides) data and VD levels were collected in 67 adolescents. 66% of the adolescents showed VD sufficiency, 28% insufficiency, and 6% showed the deficiency. There was a significant difference in VD levels between the stages of sexual maturation for boys and girls. Overweight patients had lower serum VD levels. The correlation analysis indicated a positive correlation between VD and fasting glycemia and HDL-c, but with no significant difference. A negative correlation was observed between VD and cholesterol, LDL-c and triglycerides, but also with no significant difference. Once VD is crucial for bone health, and as it seems it is necessary to the homeostasis of glycemia, lipids, and body weight, we suggest that more studies should be conducted to confirm the precise role of this vitamin in the promotion and maintenance of health in this population.
