Effect of music therapy on short-term psychological and physiological outcomes in mechanically ventilated patients:A randomized clinical pilot study

Background:Elevated anxiety levels are common in patients on mechanical ventilation(MV)and may challenge *** suggests music-based interventions may reduce anxiety during ***,studies inves-tigating specific music therapy techniques,addressing psychological and physiological well-being in patients on MV,are ***:This three-arm randomized clinical pilot study was conducted with MV patients admitted to the intensive care unit(ICU)of Hospital San Joséin Bogotá,Colombia between March 7,2022,and July 11,*** were divided into three groups:intervention group 1(IG1),music-assisted relaxation;intervention group 2(IG2),patient-preferred therapeutic music listening;and control group(CG),standard *** main outcome measure was the 6-item State-Anxiety *** outcomes were:pain(measured with a visual analog scale),resilience(measured with the Brief Resilience Scale),agitation/sedation(measured with the Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale),vital signs(including heart rate,blood pressure,oxygen saturation,and respiratory rate),days of MV,extubation success,and days in the ***,three patients underwent electroencephalography during the ***:Data from 23 patients were analyzed in this *** age range of the patients was 24.0-84.0 years,with a median age of 66.0 years(interquartile range:57.0-74.0).Of the 23 patients,19 were female(82.6%).No statistically significant differences between the groups were observed for anxiety(P=0.330),pain(P=0.624),resilience(P=0.916),agitation/sedation(P=0.273),length of ICU stay(P=0.785),or vital signs.A statistically significant difference between the groups was found for days of MV(P=0.019).Electroencephalography mea-surements showed a trend toward delta and theta band power decrease for two patients and a power increase on both beta frequencies(slow and fast)in the frontal areas of the brain for one ***:In this pilot study,music therapy did not sig

A critical gap between the occupant behaviour research field and the building engineering practice limits the integration of occupant-centric strategies into simulation-aided building design and *** this gap would contribute to the implementation of strategies that improve the occupants’well-being while reducing the buildings’environmental *** this view,it is urgent to develop guidelines,standardised methods,and supporting tools that facilitate the integration of advanced occupant behaviour models into the simulation *** important step that needs to be fully integrated into the simulation workflow is the identification of influential and non-influential occupant behaviour aspects for a given simulation ***,this article advances and demonstrates the application of the Impact Indices method,a fast and efficient method for screening the potential impact of occupant behaviour on the heating and cooling ***,the method now allows the calculation of Impact Indices quantifying the sensitivity of building energy use to occupancy,lighting use,plug-load appliances use,and blind operation at any spatial and temporal ***,users can apply it in more detailed heating and cooling scenarios without losing ***,they can identify which components in building design and operation require more sophisticated occupant behaviour *** office building is used as a real case study to illustrate the application of the method and asses its performance against a one-factor-at-a-time sensitivity *** Impact Indices method indicates that occupancy,lighting use and plug-load appliances have the greatest impact on the annual cooling demand of the studied office building;blind operation is influential only in the west and south façades of the ***,potential applications of the method in building design and operation practice are discussed.

Punctual mutations in 23S rRNA gene of clarithromycinresistant Helicobacter pylori in Colombian populations

AIM To characterize punctual mutations in 23S rRNA gene of clarithromycin-resistant Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) and determine their association with therapeutic *** PCR products of 23S rRNA gene V domain of 74 H. pylori isolates; 34 resistant to clarithromycin(29 from a low-risk gastric cancer(GC) population: TumacoColombia, and 5 from a high-risk population: TuquerresColombia) and 40 from a susceptible population(28 from Tumaco and 12 from Túquerres) were sequenced using capillary electrophoresis. The concordance between mutations of V domain 23S rRNA gene of H. pylori and therapeutic failure was determined using the Kappa coefficient and Mc Nemar's test was performed to determine the relationship between H. pylori mutationsand clarithromycin ***23S rRNA gene from H. pylori was amplified in 56/74 isolates, of which 25 were resistant to clarithromycin(20 from Tumaco and 5 from Túquerres, respectively). In 17 resistant isolates(13 from Tumaco and 4 from Túquerres) the following mutations were found: A1593 T1, A1653 G2, C1770 T, C1954 T1, and G1827 C in isolates from Tumaco, and A2144 G from Túquerres. The mutations T2183 C, A2144 G and C2196 T in H. pylori isolates resistant to clarithromycin from Colombia are reported for the first time. No association between the H. pylori mutations and in vitro clarithromycin resistance was found. However, therapeutic failure of eradication treatment was associated with mutations of 23S rRNA gene in clarithromycin-resistant H. pylori(κ = 0.71).CONCLUSION The therapeutic failure of eradication treatment in the two populations from Colombia was associated with mutations of the 23S rRNA gene in clarithromycinresistant H. pylori.

Physiological and pathological effects of amyloid-β species in neural stem cell biology

Although amyloid-β peptide is considered neurotoxic, it may mediate several physiological processes during embryonic development and in the adult brain. The pathological function of amyloid-β peptide has been extensively studied due to its implication in Alzheimer’s disease, but its physiological function remains poorly understood. Amyloid-β peptide can be detected in non-aggregated (monomeric) and aggregated (oligomeric and fibrillary) forms. Each form has different cytotoxic and/or physiological properties, so amyloid-β peptide and its role in Alzheimer’s disease need to be studied further. Neural stem cells and neural precursor cells are good tools for the study on neurodegenerative diseases and can provide future therapeutic applications in diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. In this review, we provide an outline of the effects of amyloid-β peptide, in monomeric and aggregated forms, on the biology of neural stem cells/neural precursor cells, and discuss the controversies. We also describe the possible molecular targets that could be implicated in these effects, especially GSK3β. A better understanding of amyloid-β peptide (both physiological and pathological), and the signaling pathways involved are essential to advance the field of Alzheimer’s disease.

Nest composition and worker relatedness in three slave-making ants of the genus Rossomyrmex Arnoldi and their Proformica Ruzsky hosts （Hymenoptera, Formicidae）

In this paper, we analyze and compare nest composition and architecture as well as worker relatedness in three related species of slave-making ants： Rossomyrmex anatolicus, R. minuchae, and R. quandratinodum. Colony structure within nests is an important trait in ants, especially in the case of mixed societies, when host and parasite coexist in the same nest. Data for their respective free-living hosts, Proformica korbi, P.. longiseta and P. sp., are also provided. For our study, we integrated a meticulous excava- tion procedure with a genetic method. We conclude that the average number of parasites, as well as of slaves, is species-specific, whereas nest depth depends on the nest archi- tecture of the host. The genus Rossomyrmex seems to be monogynous and monandrous, whereas Proformica shows differences in the number of queens and mating frequency. R. quandratinodum shows different traits in nest composition （host/parasite ratio： P/R） and architecture. The difference in traits may account for some differences in parasitism： raid process or avoidance of parasitism.

The pathological implication of amyloid precursor protein(APP)in Alzheimer’s disease has been widely documented due to its involvement in the generation of amyloid-β ***,the physiological functions of APP are still poorly *** is considered a multimodal protein due to its role in a wide variety of processes,both in the embryo and in the adult ***,APP seems to play a key role in the proliferation,differentiation and maturation of neural stem *** addition,APP can be processed through two canonical processing pathways,generating different functionally active fragments:soluble APP-α,soluble APP-β,amyloid-β peptide and the APP intracellular C-terminal *** fragments also appear to modulate various functions in neural stem cells,including the processes of proliferation,neurogenesis,gliogenesis or cell ***,the molecular mechanisms involved in these effects are still *** this review,we summarize the physiological functions of APP and its main proteolytic derivatives in neural stem cells,as well as the possible signaling pathways that could be implicated in these *** knowledge of these functions and signaling pathways involved in the onset or during the development of Alzheimer’s disease is essential to advance the understanding of the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease,and in the search for potential therapeutic targets.

A modification of the Hill cipher algorithm was recently proposed by Ismail et al.(2006),who claimed that their new scheme could offer more security than the original one due to an extra non-linearity layer introduced via an elaborated key gen-eration *** mechanism produces one different encryption key for each one of the plaintext ***,we show in this paper that their method still has severe security flaws whose weaknesses are essentially the same as that already found in the original Hill cipher scheme.
