We investigated the cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk of the elderly in a city in northeastern Brazil, and the correlation of this risk with vitamin D and PTH status. We studied 359 elderly, both genders, from Piauí-Teresina-Brazil. Variables investigated: body mass index, waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure. A subsample (n = 100) was investigated for biochemical analyses: PTH and 25(OH)-vitamin D levels;total, HDl and lDl-cholesterol;and fasting glucose. High blood pressure, abdominal obesity, sedentarism, high total cholesterol, high triacylglycerol levels, as well as low vitamin D levels, were, among the investigated variables, the most prevalent. Visceral adiposity and low vitamin D were found to be more prevalent in women than in men, whilst alcohol intake and smoking were more prevalent in men. The correlation between vitamin D, PTH and the investigated risk variables, under our study conditions, were not significant.

Background:mucopolysaccharidoses type Ⅲ (mPS Ⅲ) are a group of autosomai recessive lysosomal storage diseases,caused by mutations in genes that code for enzymes involved in the lysosomal degradation of heparan sulphate:heparan sulfate sulfamidase (SGSH),a-N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAGlU),heparan sulfate acetyl-CoA:a-glucosaminide N-acetyltransferase (HGSNAT),and N-acetylglucosamine-6-sulfatase (GNS).methods:In this study,we have performed the molecular analysis of the SGSH,NAGlU and HGSNAT genes in 10 patients from 6 different mPS Ⅲ Tunisian ***:In the SGSH gene,two mutations were identified:one novel (p.D477N) and one already described (p.Q365X).In the NAGlU gene,two novel mutations were discovered (p.l550P and p.E153X).For the novel missense mutations found in these two genes we performed an in silico structural analysis and the results were consistent with the clinical course of the patients harboring those ***,in HGSNAT gene,we found the splicesite mutation c.234+1G>A that had already been reported as relatively frequent in mPS ⅢC patients from countries surrounding the basin of the mediterranean *** presence in two Tunisian mPS ⅢC families points to the hypothesis of its peri mediterranean *** the exception of the c.234+1G>A mutation,that was identified in two unrelated mPS ⅢC families,the other identified mutations were family-specific and were always found in homozygosity in the patients studied,thus reflecting the existence of consanguinity in mPS Ⅲ Tunisian ***:Three novel mutations are reported here,further contributing to the knowledge of the molecular basis of these *** results of this study will allow carrier detection in affected families and prenatal molecular diagnosis,leading to an improvement in genetic counseling.

We prove that any C1-stable weakly shadowable volume-preserving diffeomorphism defined on a compact manifold displays a dominated splitting E ⊕ F. moreover, both E and F are volume-hyperbolic. Finally, we prove the version of this result for divergence-free vector fields. As a consequence, in low dimensions, we obtain global hyperbolicity.

Under a first order moment condition on the immigration mechanism,we show that an appropriately scaled supercritical and irreducible multi-type continuous state and continuous time branching process with immigration(CBI process)converges almost *** an x log(x)moment condition on the branching mechanism does not hold,then the limit is *** this x log(x)moment condition holds,then we prove l1 convergence as *** projection of the limit on any left non-Perron eigenvector of the branching mean matrix is ***,in addition,a suitable extra power moment condition on the branching mechanism holds,then we provide the correct scaling for the projection of a CBI process on certain left non-Perron eigenvectors of the branching mean matrix in order to have almost sure and l1 ***,under a second order moment condition on the branching and immigration mechanisms,we prove l2 convergence of an appropriately scaled process and the above-mentioned projections as well.A representation of the limits is also provided under the same moment conditions.

Caffeine is present in products marketed for weight loss, with the purpose of increasing thermogenesis and lipid metabolism. The dosage declared by the product manufacturer, or even its presence, is not always correctly described on the label. This work aimed to investigate the undeclared synthetic caffeine in weight loss formulations by a high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection(HPlC-DAD) method. From one hundred products purchased through Brazilian e-commerce, seventeen contained caffeine, either naturally or synthetically added to formulation. The caffeine-containing samples were confirmed by an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(UHPlC-mS/mS) method, and adulteration was clearly proven in five products. The content highest caffeine contained 448.8 mg per dose. Other irregularities were also found; nevertheless, the most serious was the addition of synthetic drugs without asking the consumers. Additional drugs expose the consumer to more possible side-effects as well as deleterious drug interactions. Intentional adulteration with any unlabeled substance is typically motivated by a desire to increase or alter the claimed effect of the marketed product to gain a commercial advantage.

The last 15 years or so have seen a marked increase in the publication of handbooks,manuals,lexica and encyclopaedia on various academic disciplines and *** consequence is that overview articles on ancient Egyptian law have also ***,the scope and content of such articles and chapters depend on the one hand on the expectations,specifications and word count parameters given by the editors,and on the other on the individual take of the *** five chapters1 by Richard Jasnow and Joe manning that add up to almost 240 pages,Egyptian law fully takes its place alongside other Near Eastern legal systems in the chronologically ordered Handbook of Oriental Studies(HdO)double volume edited by Ray Westbrook,and the only reproach that one might find with the quasi-exhaustive handling of the subject is that the citations favour secondary literature over text editions and thus complicate access to the primary sources.

The dictyostelid social amoebae(Dictyostelia)occur in terrestrial habitats *** has been observed previously that their diversity decreases with increasing latitude and *** we look at dictyostelid diversity in the high latitude habitats of Northern *** were recovered from soil samples using traditional plating methods and then identified using morphological characters and molecular sequence(small subunit ribosomal RNA)*** total,nine species were recovered,including two new species,described herein as Dictyostelium barbibulus and Polysphondylium *** species diversity found here is discussed in relation to previous findings in the area as well as other high-latitude studies,and biogeographical patterns are *** total number of species found in Northern Sweden is lower than the numbers recorded for regions further south in Europe,a finding consistent with a latitudinal gradient of species *** findings highlight the benefit of using molecular data for accurate species identification in Dictyostelia and the need for a continued sampling effort to better understand their diversity and distribution,especially in high latitude habitats.

Celiac disease(CD)is one of the most common food intolerances in developed *** affects genetically susceptible individuals and has severe consequences if it remains undiagnosed.A disease known for more than a century,it is still the focus for experts from various fields of research and ***,pathologists,immunologists,food engineers and dieticians share their knowledge and expertise to improve the conditions of CD *** new insights in the pathomechanism of gluten processing and antigen presentation in CD,it was possible to improve the diagnostic antigen mimicking the primary epitope in *** celiac neo-epitopes are comprised of a complex of gliadin peptides crosslinked with transglutaminase(tTg).They are an early diagnostic marker for CD which occurs up to 6 months earlier than classical markers known to miss a certain amount of CD patients.

Background:Forested landscapes are valuable sources of ecosystem services especially in areas dedicated to intense agricultural *** from forest margin is known to influence the wild bee community in the landscape surrounding forested *** little is known regarding how bee communities distribute themselves in landscapes that exhibit different forest successional ***:We examined how land use type and distance from the forest edge affect the abundance and richness of the wild bee community across four forest successional *** were collected in sites representing four stages of forest succession and analyzed using generalized linear mixed models with negative binomial ***:Wild bee diversity is reduced in forested environments that maintain dense stands of trees and high canopy ***,distance from the forest edge was an important factor determining wild bee distribution in successional stages adjacent to forest ***,we found that bees maintain high specificity for distinct successional states and ***:Our results demonstrate how different successional stages can harbor different bee species and highlight the ability of microhabitats to act as reservoirs of bee diversity in and around forest ***,we found that maximizing successional patchiness across forested landscapes increases the amount of available habitat that can support a diverse suite of bees with different nesting biologies and behaviors.

Aerodynamic drag is a large resistance force to vehicle motion,particularly at highway *** wheel deflectors were designed to reduce the wheel drag and,consequently,the overall vehicle drag;however,they may actually be detrimental to vehicle aerodynamics in modern *** the present study,computational fluid dynamics simulations were conducted on the notchback DrivAer model-a simplified,yet realistic,open-source vehicle model that incorporates features of a modern passenger *** and air-jet wheel deflectors upstream of the front wheels were introduced to assess the effect of underbody-flow deflection on the vehicle *** wheel-deflector designs with varying heights were observed and compared to 45◦and 90◦air-jet wheel *** conventional wheel deflectors reduced wheel drag but resulted in an overall drag increase of up to 10%.For the cases studied,the 90◦air jet did not reduce the overall drag compared to the baseline case;the 45◦air jet presented drag benefits of up to 1.5%at 35 m/s and *** to conventional wheel deflectors,air-jet wheel deflectors have the potential to reduce vehicle drag to a greater extent and present the benefit of being turned off at lower speeds when flow deflection is undesirable,thus improving efficiency and reducing emissions.
