numerical modeling of centrifuge cyclic lateral pile load experiments

To gain insight into the inelastic behavior of piles, the response of a vertical pile embedded in dry sand and subjected to cyclic lateral loading was studied experimentally in centrifuge tests conducted in Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussees. Three types of cyclic loading were applied, two asymmetric and one symmetric with respect to the unloaded pile. An approximately square-root variation of soil stiffness with depth was obtained from indirect in-flight density measurements, laboratory tests on reconstituted samples, and well-established empirical correlations. The tests were simulated using a cyclic nonlinear Winkler spring model, which describes the full range of inelastic phenomena, including separation and re-attachment of the pile from and to the soil. The model consists of three mathematical expressions capable of reproducing a wide variety of monotonic and cyclic experimentalp-y curves. The physical meaning of key model parameters is graphically explained and related to soil behavior. Comparisons with the centrifuge test results demonstrate the general validity of the model and its ability to capture several features of pile-soil interaction, including： soil plastification at an early stage of loading, ＂pinching＂ behavior due to the formation of a relaxation zone around the upper part of the pile, and stiffness and strength changes due to cyclic loading. A comparison of the p-y curves derived from the test results and the proposed model, as well as those from the classical curves of Reese et al. （1974） for sand, is also presented.

Single-nucleus RnA and ATAC sequencing reveals the impact of chromatin accessibility on gene expression in Arabidopsis roots at the singlecell level

Similar to other complex organisms,plants consist of diverse and specialized cell types.The gain of unique biological functions of these different cell types is the consequence of the establishment of cell-typespecific transcriptional programs.As a necessary step in gaining a deeper understanding of the regulatory mechanisms controlling plant gene expression,we report the use of single-nucleus RnA sequencing(snucRnA-seq)and single-nucleus assay for transposase accessible chromatin sequencing(snucATACseq)technologies on Arabidopsis roots.The comparison of our single-nucleus transcriptomes to the published protoplast transcriptomes validated the use of nuclei as biological entities to establish plant cell-type-specific transcriptomes.Furthermore,our snucRnA-seq results uncovered the transcriptomes of additional cell subtypes not identified by single-cell RnA-seq.Similar to our transcriptomic approach,the snucATAC-seq approach led to the distribution of the Arabidopsis nuclei into distinct clusters,suggesting the differential accessibility of chromatin between groups of cells according to their identity.To reveal the impact of chromatin accessibility on gene expression,we integrated snucRnA-seq and snucATAC-seq data and demonstrated that cell-type-specific marker genes display cell-type-specific patterns of chromatin accessibility.Our data suggest that the differential chromatin accessibility is a critical mechanism to regulate gene activity at the cell-type level.

Epidural electrical stimulation for spinal cord injury

A long-standing goal of spinal cord injury research is to develop effective repair strategies,which can restore motor and sensory functions to near-normal levels.Recent advances in clinical management of spinal cord injury have significantly improved the prognosis,survival rate and quality of life in patients with spinal cord injury.In addition,a significant progress in basic science research has unraveled the underlying cellular and molecular events of spinal cord injury.Such efforts enabled the development of pharmacologic agents,biomaterials and stem-cell based therapy.Despite these efforts,there is still no standard care to regenerate axons or restore function of silent axons in the injured spinal cord.These challenges led to an increased focus on another therapeutic approach,namely neuromodulation.In multiple animal models of spinal cord injury,epidural electrical stimulation of the spinal cord has demonstrated a recovery of motor function.Emerging evidence regarding the efficacy of epidural electrical stimulation has further expanded the potential of epidural electrical stimulation for treating patients with spinal cord injury.However,most clinical studies were conducted on a very small number of patients with a wide range of spinal cord injury.Thus,subsequent studies are essential to evaluate the therapeutic potential of epidural electrical stimulation for spinal cord injury and to optimize stimulation parameters.Here,we discuss cellular and molecular events that continue to damage the injured spinal cord and impede neurological recovery following spinal cord injury.We also discuss and summarize the animal and human studies that evaluated epidural electrical stimulation in spinal cord injury.

We prove that any C1-stable weakly shadowable volume-preserving diffeomorphism defined on a compact manifold displays a dominated splitting E ⊕ F. Moreover, both E and F are volume-hyperbolic. Finally, we prove the version of this result for divergence-free vector fields. As a consequence, in low dimensions, we obtain global hyperbolicity.

Importance of emulsions in crystallization --applications for fat crystallization

Emulsions and crystallization are two independent research topics which normally do not overlap although a combination of the two could be applicable to many areas. Here, the importance of emulsions in the field of fat crystallization is described. Three applications with industrial relevance were chosen for investigation： fat fractionation, the solidification of phase change materials and solid lipid nanoparticles. For fat fractionation and phase change materials, emulsification can be applied as a tool to improve the fat crystallization process, and thus the product quality of the crystallized fat. Furthermore, the use of emulsification creates new solid lipid nanoparticles in the application fields such as area of fat crystallization.

Platypnea-orthodeoxia syndrome (POS) describes a clinical entity of arterial hypoxemia in the upright position associated with dyspnoea, which is relieved by recumbency. The syndrome is caused by an intracardiac or intrapulmonary shunt, or ventilation-perfusion mismatching. We describe here the first case of resolving/relapsing POS induced by intracardiac right-to-left shunting that was partly dependent on volume overload.
