In the present work,an attempt is made to partially replace high cost silica sand with sustainable eco-friendly *** practical utility of cow dung as an additive material that facilitates binding in sand moulds has been *** Taguchi method is used to plan and conduct nine experiments with three replicates *** analysis of variance study is performed to understand the practical significance of moulding sand variables,that is,percentage of cow dung,clay,water,and degree of ramming on sand mould *** conflicting multiple objective functions(maximize mould hardness,and minimize collapsibility and gas evolution)are optimized by utilizing the Data Envelopment Analysis Ranking(DEAR)*** optimal parameters i.e.6%of clay,4%of water,5%of cow-dung and 4 numbers of ramming strokes are obtained by applying a hybrid Taguchi-DEAR *** parameters show the best moulding properties are:mould hardness 55,gas evolution 5.9 ml·g-1,and collapsibility 470 g·***,a Lovejoy coupling made of aluminium is cast in the sand mould prepared with cow dung and without cow dung,with the optimum set of *** mechanical properties,surface finish,and microstructure of the casting cast with cow-dung are better than that without cowdung.

Performance estimation of bi-directional turbines in wave energy plants

Oscillating water column （OWC） based wave energy plants have been designed with several types of bidirectional turbines for converting pneumatic power to shaft power. Impulse turbines with linked guide vanes and fixed guide vanes have been tested at the Indian Wave Energy plant. This was after initial experimentation with Well＇s turbines. In contrast to the Well＇s turbine which has a linear damping characteristic, impulse turbines have non-linear damping. This has an important effect in the overall energy conversion from wave to wire. Optimizing the wave energy plant requires a turbine with linear damping and good efficiency over a broad range of flow coefficient. This work describes how such a design can be made using fixed guide vane impulse turbines. The Indian Wave Energy plant is used as a case study.

Effect of blast inside tunnel on surrounding soil mass,tunnel lining,and superstructure for varying shapes of tunnels

In this study,a finite element(FE)analysis of shallow tunnels exposed to a blast inside the tunnel,with soil as surrounding medium and a structure at ground level,was *** ConWep program,developed by the US Army,was used to simulate blast loading using ABAQUS/Explicit■.Drucker-Prager(D-P)plasticity model,concrete damage plasticity(CDP),and Johnson-Cook(J-C)plasticity models were used to define the behavior of the soil,concrete,and reinforcement,*** analysis was carried out to compare the damages to the superstructure with variation in the cross-sectional shapes of the tunnel under internal blast *** tunnel shapes(circular,rectangular,and horseshoe cross-sections)were considered in the FE *** explosive of 100 kg TNT was located at the center of the cross-section of the *** response of the tunnel in terms of displacement and stress at critical locations was *** results showed that changes in the cross-section of the tunnel affect the stability of the tunnel,even when keeping all other factors *** was observed that the intensity of the stresses was the highest for a rectangular tunnel and lowest for a circular ***,it was also determined that the tunnel with a rectangular cross-section experienced the maximum displacement in the reinforced concrete(RC)lining compared with the horseshoe and circular *** displacement measured at critical structural members of the superstructure was found to be the highest for the tunnel with a rectangular cross-section and lowest for the tunnel with a circular cross-section.

Biomass and carbon stocks in mangrove ecosystems of Kerala,southwest coast of India

Background:mangroves are important tropical carbon sinks,and their role in mitigating climate change is well documented across the ***,the ecosystem carbon stocks in the mangroves of India have not been studied *** from this region is very limited for providing sufficient insights and authentic evaluation of carbon stocks on a regional *** this study,we evaluated the ecosystem carbon stock and its spatial variation in mangroves of Kerala,southwest coast of ***:The mean biomass stored in mangrove vegetation of Kerala is 117.11±1.02 t/ha(ABG=80.22±0.80,BGB=36.89±0.23 t/ha).Six mangrove species were found distributed in the study *** the different species,Avicennia marina had the highest biomass(162.18 t/ha)and least biomass was observed in Sonneratia alba(0.61 t/ha).The mean ecosystem carbon stock of mangrove systems in Kerala was estimated to be 139.82 t/ha,equivalent to 513.13 t CO2 e/ha with the vegetation and soil storing 58.56 t C/ha and 81.26 t C/ha ***:The present study reveals that Kerala mangroves store sizable volume of carbon and therefore need to be preserved and managed sustainably,to retain along with the increase in carbon *** features the need of broadening mangrove cover as well as restoring deteriorated land in the past 50 *** mangrove forests in this region are protected by the Kerala Forest Department,they have been frequently facing illegal encroachment,prawn cultivation,and coastal erosion.

Convective Heat and mass Transfer in magneto Jeffrey Fluid Flow on a Rotating Cone with Heat Source and Chemical Reaction

The present paper addresses the megnetohydrodynamic Jeffrey fluid flow with heat and mass transfer on an infinitely rotating upright cone. Inquiry is carried out with heat source/sink and chemical reaction ***, constant thermal and concentration flux situations are imposed. Optimal homotopy analysis method (OHAm) is employed to achieve series solutions of the concerned differential equations. Important results of the flow phenomena are explored and deliberated by means of graphs and numerical tables. It is perceived that thermal boundary layer thickness possess contrast variations for the heat source and heat sink, respectively. The chemical reaction enhances the heat transfer rate but decline the mass transfer rate. moreover, the precision of the existing findings is verified by associating them with the previously available work.

Performance studies on an oscillating water column employing a Savonius rotor

A new oscillating water column (OWC) design is proposed in this study to incorporate a simpler Savonius type turbine. Conventional OWC devices employ a bi-directional turbine such as a Wells or an Impulse turbine to extract energy from the air. The disadvantages of the Wells turbine include its inability to self start and stalling. The Savonius turbine is much cheaper and is an effective option at low Reynolds numbers. In the current rectangular OWC device, unlike the circular OWC, the width of entry of the capture chamber can be increased without being influenced by the diameter at the turbine section. To improve its primary capture efficiency, the front and rear walls of the OWC are inclined to minimize reflection. The Savonius rotor characteristics are studied with respect to the change in frequency of the incoming waves. The rotor rpm is sensitive to wave period and primary conversion efficiency while changes in depth only affect the rotor rpm at lower frequencies. The Savonius rotor shows promising results and can be incorporated into large scale OWC devices to reduce costs of the turbine component of the system.

Investigation of dry sliding wear properties of multi-directional forged mg-Zn alloys

Effect of multi-directional forging(mDF)on wear properties of mg-Zn alloys(with 2,4,and 6wt%Zn)is *** sliding wear test was performed using pin on disk machine on mDF processed and homogenized *** behavior of samples was analyzed at loads of ION and 20 N,with sliding distances of 2000m and 4000m,at a sliding velocity of 3m/*** of worn samples were observed under scanning electron microscopy(SEm),energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS),and x-ray diffraction(XRD)and the results were *** properties were evaluated using microhardness *** 5 passes of mDF,the average grain size was found to be 30±4p m,22±3 pm,and 18±3 pm,in mg-2%Zn,mg-4%Zn,and mg-6%Zn alloys,respectively,with significant improvement in hardness in all *** resistance was improved after mDF processing,as well as,with increment in Zn content in mg ***,it decreased when the load and the sliding distance *** surface exhibited ploughing,delamination,plastic deformation,and wear debris along sliding direction,and abrasive wear was found to be the main mechanism.

Rare earth-doped mixed Ni-Cu-Zn ferrites as an effective photocatalytic agent for active degradation of Rhodamine B dye

In this study, a series of Gd^(3+)-doped mixed Ni-Cu-Zn ferrites with composition of Zn_(0.5)Ni_(0.3)Cu_(0.2)Fe_(2-x)Gd_(x)O_(4)(x = 0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.075, 0.1) was prepared using self-ignition sol-gel method. The prepared nanoparticles with an average size ranging from 22 to 26 nm show a single-phase cubic structure belonging to the spinel matrix. A rise in the Gd^(3+)concentration leads to an increase in crystallite size and lattice parameter. In Fourier transform infrared spectra, two main absorption bands belonging to the spinel structure are observed. The high-frequency bands(v_(1)) represent the tetrahedral complex, while the lowfrequency bands(v_(2)) signify the octahedral complex. The optical bandgap of the nanoferrites is found within the range of 2.91 to 2.41 eV, depending on their size. The magnetic characteristics of the material,such as saturation magnetization and coercivity are significantly altered with the concentration of Gd^(3+)in the solution. Using Rhodamine B(RhB) as a model organic pollutant, an in-depth investigation of the photocatalytic activity of the compounds was carried out. The present outcomes show that adding an adequate amount of Gd^(3+)significantly enhances the number of hydroxyl radicals produced by the ferrite,in turn, increasing the photocatalytic activity of the material. mechanism elucidated by scavenger studies reveals that ·OH and holes are the primary reactive radicals responsible for the degradation *** photocatalysts show an insignificant performance loss in five consecutive cycles. Thus, it is concluded that these photocatalysts are highly suitable for the remediation of dye-contaminated wastewater.
