Introduction: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) are a public health problem and have forced many workers to quit their jobs prematurely. This study investigated the prevalence and risk factors of WRMSDs among Healthcare workers in five reference hospitals in the City of Douala-Cameroon. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2022 among 561 healthcare workers working in five reference hospitals in the city of Douala, Cameroon. Participants were selected using a convenient sampling technique. Data were collected with structured questionnaires;data on the demographics and risk factors were collected using a well-designed questionnaire, while estimation of the prevalence of WRMSDs was done using the Modified Nordic questionnaire. Results: The overall prevalence rate of WRMSDs among healthcare workers in Douala hospitals was 83.4% (468/561). The prevalence per professional groups was as follows: 88.8% (71) for Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLS), 81.9% (289) for nurses, 21 (80.8%) for Physiotherapists (PTs) and 78.8% (41) for Medical Doctors (MDs). There was a significant difference (p = 0.001) in the prevalence of WRMSDs with respect to place of work where healthcare workers from HLD recorded the highest prevalence 89.9%, while Healthcare workers from NBDH were 2.91 times at risk (AOR = 2.91;95% CI: 1.32 - 6.41;p = 0.001) to develop WRMSDs than healthcare workers in the other hospitals. With respect to body region, the highest prevalence of WRMSDs was recorded on the lower back, 58.8% with the lowest at the elbows 11.2%. The age group 30 to 39 years was significantly associated with WRMSDs at level of the shoulder (p = 0.002), upper back (p = 0.019), elbows (p Conclusion: The overall prevalence rate of WRMSDs among healthcare workers in Douala hospitals was high. Estimation of the Direct Cost of Management of Venous Thromboembolism in Three Reference Hospitals in the City of Yaoundé: A Retrospective Study over a Three-Year Period

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a major public health problem due to its increasing frequency, mortality and management cost. This cost may require major financial efforts from patients, especially in developing countries like ours where less than 7% of the population has health insurance. This study aimed to estimate the direct cost of managing VTE in three reference hospitals in Yaoundé. Methods: This was a cross-sectional retrospective study over a three-year period (from January 1st 2018 to December 31 2020) carried out in the Cardiology departments of the Central and General Hospitals, and the Emergency Centre of the city of Yaoundé. All patients managed during the study period for deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism confirmed by venous ultrasound coupled with Doppler and computed tomography pulmonary angiography respectively were included. For each patient, we collected sociodemographic and clinical data as well as data on the cost of consultation, hospital stay, workups and medications. These data were analysed using SPSS version 23.0. Results: A total of 92 patient’s records were analysed. The median age was 60 years [48 - 68] with a sex ratio of 0.53. The median direct cost of management of venous thromboembolism was 766,375 CFAF [536,455 - 1,029,745] or $1415 USD. Management of pulmonary embolism associated with deep vein thrombosis was more costly than isolated pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis. Factors influencing the direct cost of management of venous thromboembolism were: hospital structure (p = 0.015), health insurance (p 0.001), type of pulmonary embolism (p = 0.021), and length of hospital stay (p = 0.001). Conclusion: Management of VTE is a major financial burden for our patients and this burden is influenced by the hospital structure, health insurance, type of pulmonary embolism and length of hospital stay.

Evaluation of the Functional Capacity of a Group of Patients Aged over 65 Years: A Cross-Sectional Study at the YaoundéCentral Hospital

Background: The functional capacity of elderly patients decreases with age due to a combination of age-related decline in physiologic functions and chronic diseases. A severe decrease leads to an inability to carry out activities of daily living leading to a loss of autonomy and increased dependence. The aim of this study was to evaluate the functional capacity of the elderly followed at the Yaoundé Central Hospital. Methods: We carried out a non-probabilistic consecutive sampling of elderly patients that consulted in Yaoundé Central Hospital during a five-month’ period. Data was taken concerning their chronic conditions, use of medication, and presence of depressive symptoms (evaluated using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) questionnaire). The presence of any cognitive impairment was evaluated using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Cardiac ultrasonography and electrocardiograms were done to evaluate the cardiac morphology and physiology. Their functional capacity was assessed with the WHO Global Physical Activity Questionnaire and the six-minute walk test. A self-paced step test was equally done to estimate the maximum oxygen consumption during aerobic exercise. We carried out aunivariate, and then multivariate analyses to identify factors associated with an altered functional status. Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS software 23.0. The threshold of significance was set at 0.05. Results: 66 participants were included (35 women) with a median age of 70 (IQR: 67 - 75) years. Among them, 39.4% were found to have an altered functional capacity, about 87.8% had at least one chronic condition and 47% had two or more. The most prevalent chronic condition was hypertension (71.2%) followed by heart failure (24.2%) and osteoarthritis (12.1%). Mild depressive symptoms were present in 1.5% of our study population. In the present work, the mass transfer characteristics, namely moisture diffusivity and moisture transfer coefficient of “Violet de Galmi” variety of onions were evaluated using the analytical model. Onions were dried in a single layer at different temperatures (40℃, 50℃, 60℃, and 70℃) and for a relative humidity of drying air of 20%. The results showed a reasonably good agreement between the values predicted by the correlation and the experimental observations. This model computed the Biot number, effective moisture diffusivity, and mass transfer coefficient. Effective diffusion coefficient values are obtained between 0.2578 × 10-9 m2·s-1 and 0.5460 × 10-9 m2·s-1. Mass transfer coefficients of “Violet de Galmi” onion drying vary between 3.37 × 10-7 m·s-1 and 13.38 × 10-7 m·s-1. Numbers of mass transfer Biot are found between 0.9797 and 2.9397. The activation energy Ea is 31.73 kJ·mol-1.

Venous Thromboembolic Disease and Thrombolysis at the YaoundéEmergency Center during the Past Five Years, Cameroon

Background: Venous thromboembolic disease (VTE) is a clinical entity whose two clinical manifestations are deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). It is a frequent and severe disease in Cameroon, thus constituting a significant public health problem. We aimed to describe VTE management in the Yaoundé Emergency Center, in particular the use of thrombolysis. Methods: This was a retrospective study on patients hospitalized at the Yaoundé Emergency Center for DVT and/or PE from January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2020. We collected clinical signs, paraclinical signs, risk factors of VTE, and management methods from each patient. Results: We recruited 106 participants. Dyspnea was the most frequent symptom;PE was the most common form of VTE in eight patients on 10. Obesity and high blood pressure were the main cardiovascular risk factors. The main clinical signs were oedema and pain in the limb for DVT, dyspnea, and tachycardia for PE. Heparinotherapy was the most commonly used management modality. Thrombolysis was performed in 7.5% of participants, especially in the case of hypotension or massive PE. Conclusion: In VTE management, thrombolysis remains the least used therapeutic modality in our context. Heparinotherapy remains the basis of the therapy.
