Background: Research on gender in Parkinson’s disease (PD) frequently focuses on clinical differences between men and women. Socioeconomic factors such as race, ethnicity, insurance type, and level of educational attainment, have not been extensively examined in relation to gender differences in PD. The goal of this study was to identify differences in PD presentation in men and women, and identify socioeconomic factors that may confound such differences. Methods: A movement disorder patient database containing 445 patients with idiopathic PD was analyzed for gender differences in motor symptoms and disease complications using linear or logistic regression. Socioeconomic variables were then evaluated as possible confounders. Results: A greater proportion of women were non-white (p hen compared to univariate analysis, uniquely demonstrated that women were less likely to experience dementia and autonomic dysfunction, relative to men (p h PD are susceptible to motor fluctuations and dyskinesia, but may be relatively protected against dementia and autonomic dysfunction. Women and men with PD in our population had different socioeconomic profiles, which may have confounded some gender-associated differences.

In this paper, a three-parameter lifetime distribution named power hamza distribution (Ph) is proposed. The Ph distribution is a useful generalization of the hamza distribution which accommodates heavy-tailed, upside-down bathtub and J-shaped hazard rates making it more flexible than the hamza distribution for modelling various kinds of lifetime data. A comprehensive account of the properties of this distribution is presented. The maximum likelihood estimators of the unknown model parameters are discussed. Finally, a real-life data is analyzed for illustrative purpose proving that the Ph outperforms the hamza distribution and several other lifetime distributions.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound diagnosis of pediatric intussusception is feasible with limited operator training. The authors report the test characteristics of bedside ultrasound(BUS) for the diagnosis of pediatric intussusception at a single ***: Inclusion criteria were: 1) patients of 0–18 years old were seen in the pediatric emergency department(ED) with a clinical presentation suspicious for intussusception; 2) BUS was performed to identify intussusception and bedside impression documented in the medical record; 3) a "formal" diagnostic study(such as computed tomography, ultrasound, or barium enema) was performed by the radiology department after BUS was completed. Electronic medical record and ED BUS archive were screened for potentially eligible ED visits between January 1st 2009 to October 3rd 2012. These records were then reviewed to identify patients for inclusion in the study. All emergency physicians who performed the BUS had undergone a minimum of 1-hour didactic training on the use of BUS to diagnose pediatric ***: A total of 1 631 charts were reviewed, with 49 meeting inclusion criteria. Five of those were later excluded for incomplete documentation or lack of saved BUS images. The prevalence of intussusception was 23%. The mean age of the subjects was 31 months. BUS was 100% sensitive(95%CI 66%–100%) and 94% specifi c(95%CI 79%–99%) for detection of pediatric intussusception compared to radiology study results. Positive and negative likelihood ratios were 16.5(95%CI 4.30%–63.21%) and 0(95%CI 0–0) ***: BUS is an accurate means of diagnosing acute intussusception in pediatric patients. Further study might be indicated to confi rm such benefi ts.

The musculo-skeletal system is commonly affected in sickle cell disease, manifesting itself as bone infarction, femoral head osteonecrosis, osteomyelitis, myonecrosis, myofibrosis and fascitis. Myositis and fasciitis are observed during a vaso-occlusive crisis in 4% of patients. Pain and swelling of bilateral proximal groups of muscles of upper and lower limbs are common presenting complaints due to prolonged sickling crises [1]. We report a case of 30-year old known hbSS patient with bilateral knee stiffness of two months duration, with associated swelling and warmth of both thighs. No preceding history of trauma. he was said to suffer at least two sickling crises in a month with the last one occurring one week prior to presentation. X-ray of the thigh showed no calcification in muscle groups. he was commenced on flexion-extension exercises.

Background： This study investigated the response of piglets receiving a yeast extract without or with a multi-enzyme mixture compared with an antimicrobial growth promoter（AGP） on performance, immune status and gut structure after an E. coli lipopolysaccharide（LPS） challenge. Thirty-six pigs were allotted to six treatments including： a non-challenged control（NCC）; LPS-challenged control（CC）; CC ＋ AGP; CC ＋ yeast extract; CC ＋ enzymes; and CC ＋ enzymes ＋ yeast extract. On d 7, pigs were bled and thereafter injected with LPS or sterile saline. Blood samples were collected at 6, 48, and 96 h post-challenge. After 96 h post-challenge, pigs were euthanized to obtain duodenal, jejunal and ileal ***： Overall（d 1 to 11）, compared with CC pigs, AGP attenuated the LPS-induced reduction in ADG（P = 0.004）,ADFI（P = 0.03） and gain/feed ratio（P = 0.01）. At 6 h post-challenge, AGP pigs had lower plasma urea N（PUN; P = 0.02）and serum TNF-α concentration（P = 0.07）, and higher platelet count（P = 0.04） and serum IL-10 concentration（P = 0.02） than CC pigs. At 48 h post-challenge, AGP pigs had lower PUN（P = 0.02） than CC pigs, whereas enzymes ＋ yeast extract interacted non-additively（P = 0.001） to reduce PUN. At 96 h post-challenge, AGP pigs had lower PUN（P = 0.02）and higher duodenal（P = 0.03）, jejunal（P = 0.01） and ileal（P = 0.07） villus height than CC pigs. In addition, enzymes ＋yeast extract interacted additively and non-additively to reduce ileal IFN-γ（P 0.10） were observed between AGP and enzymes ＋ yeast extract pigs on other measured parameters except for the downregulation of ileal IFN-γ（P ＆lt; 0.0001） and TNF-α（P = 0.003） in enzymes ＋ yeast extract pigs at 96 h ***： The LPS challenged piglets receiving enzymes ＋ yeast extract showed beneficial responses in gut structure and immunity commensurate with those receiving antibiotics, though the latter had better overall growth performance.

De-novo malignancies carry an incidence ranging between 3%-26% after transplant and account for the second highest cause of post-transplant mortality behind cardiovascular disease. While the majority of de-novo malignancies after transplant usually consist of skin cancers, there has been an increasing rate of solid tumor cancers over the last 15 years. Although, recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma(hCC) is well understood among patients transplanted for hCC, there are increasing reports of de-novo hCC in those transplanted for a non-hCC indication. The proposed pathophysiology for these cases has been mainly connected to the presence of advanced graft fibrosis or cirrhosis and always associated with the presence of hepatitis B or C virus. We report the first known case of de-novo hCC in a recipient, 14 years after a pediatric living related donor liver transplantation for end-stage liver disease due to biliary atresia without the presence of hepatitis B or C virus before and after transplant. We present this case report to increase the awareness of this phenomenon and address on the utility for screening and surveillance of hepatocellular carcinoma among these individuals. One recommendation is to use similar guidelines for screening, diagnosis, and treatment for hCC as those used for primary hCC in the pre-transplant patient, focusing on those recipients who have advanced fibrosis in the allograft, regardless of etiology.

Stanghellini model is one of the few models primarily developed to predict the evapotranspiration of crops(ET_(c))in naturally ventilated ***,there are insufficient data on the model regarding its use,particularly in China where solar greenhouses without heating systems are fast spreading for vegetable growth and *** application of Stanghellini model and the evaluation of its performance using meteorological and tomato plant data generated inside an unheated and naturally ventilated multi-span Venlo-type greenhouse is exploited in this *** capability was evaluated by utilizing data from sap flow measurements,meteorological and crop *** meteorological data included solar radiation(R_(s)),air temperature(T_(a)),relative humidity(Rh)and net radiation(Rn).Average leaf area index(LAI)values measured during the experimental period were 1.00,3.30,4.05 and 2.93;while determined crop coefficients(K_(c))changed from 0.40,0.62,1.12 to 0.83 for the initial stage,development stage,mid-season stage and late-season stage,*** from the study indicated that the average hourly ET_(c) values of tomato plants using sap flow measurements were 0.165 mm/h,0.148 mm/h,0.192 mm/h and 0.154 mm/h for the initial stage,development stage,mid-season stage and late-season stage,***,the ET_(c) values obtained from calculation using Stanghellini model were 0.158 mm/h,0.152 mm/h,0.202 mm/h and 0.162 mm/h for the initial stage,development stage,mid-season stage and late-season stage,*** ET_(c) values calculated by the Stanghellini model were close to the measured values within the same *** coefficients of correlation(R^(2))based on hourly ET_(c) for the calibration data was 0.94 and that of the validation dataset was *** plots of the estimated and measured hourly ET_(c) revealed that the R^(2) and the slope of the regression line for May,June and July were 0.94,0.90,0.96 and 1.15,0.97,1.10 re
