The.obje.tive.of this study was de.igne. to e.aluate.the.e.fe.ts of biostimulation and bioaugme.tation ame.dme.t age.ts (NPK fe.tilize., Twe.n 80 and mixe. culture. on the.biore.e.iation of tropical soil sample. artificially contaminate. with We.the.e. Bonny Light Crude.Oil (WBLCO). Re.ponse.Surface.Me.hodology (RSM) with Box Be.nke. De.ign (BBD) was use. with thre. le.e.s and thre. factors of NPK fe.tilize. (2 - 6 g), Twe.n 80 (5 - 15 mg/l) and mixe. culture.(0.5 - 1.5 g/l) as inde.e.de.t variable. and WBLCO re.oval as de.e.de.t variable.(re.ponse. in a six we.ks re.e.iation pe.iod. The.re.ults showe. that the.rate.of WBLCO re.oval ge.e.ally incre.se. with incre.se.in the.amount of NPK fe.tilize., Twe.n 80 and mixe. culture.(biomass), re.pe.tive.y. A statistically significant (P e.ond-orde. quadratic re.re.sion mode. for WBLCO re.oval (using de.ign-e.pe.t statistical program (v. 6.0.8)) with a coe.ficie.t of de.e.mination, R (=0.9996) was obtaine.. Nume.ical optimization te.hnique.base. on de.irability function was carrie. out to optimize.the.biore.e.iation proce.s. The.optimum value. for biostimulation and bioaugme.tation ame.dme.t age.ts to achie.e.a pre.icte. maximum WBLCO re.oval of 84.88 pe.ce.t we.e.found to be. NPK fe.tilize., 4.25 g;Twe.n 80, 10.22 mg/l and mixe. culture. 0.46 g/l. At this optimum point, the.obse.ve. WBLCO re.oval was found to be.83.79 pe.ce.t. The.statistical analyse. and the.close.e.s of the.e.pe.ime.tal re.ults and mode. pre.ictions show the.re.iability of the.re.re.sion mode. and thus, biostimulation and bioaugme.tation of indige.ous microbial de.sity and activity can re.uce.re.e.iation pe.iod of pe.role.m hydrocarbon contaminate. e.vironme.t and subse.ue.tly the.cost of re.e.iation.

The.possibility of using ve.e.able.oils as fue. has be.n re.ognize., howe.e., due.to its high viscositie. and low volatilitie. make. it ine.ficie.t for most combustion e.gine. and thus the.ne.d to ge. the. che.ically alte.e. or transe.te.ifie. to obtain fatty alkyl e.te.s of the.oil (biodie.e.). In this study, binary and te.nary ble.ds of biodie.e. we.e.produce. and the.e.fe.t of te.pe.ature.on the.r viscosity and de.sity was inve.tigate.. Biodie.e. was produce. from soybe.n oil by transe.te.ification of the.oil with me.hanol using potassium hydroxide.as a catalyst at a te.pe.ature.of 60℃ in a batch re.ctor. Binary and te.nary ble.ds of the.soy-biodie.e. we.e.pre.are. with soy be.n oil and pe.role.m die.e. fue., re.pe.tive.y. Viscositie. and de.sitie. of the.binary and te.nary ble.ds we.e.me.sure. at diffe.e.t te.pe.ature. of 20℃ to 90℃ as to de.e.mine.the.e.fe.t of te.pe.ature.on viscositie. and de.sitie. of the.ble.ds. The.prope.tie. of the.soy-biodie.e. produce. we.e.compare. with ASTM standard and found to be.within the.limits. The.re.ults show that the.viscositie. and de.sitie. of both the.binary and te.nary ble.ds are.te.pe.ature.de.e.de.t. The.viscositie. of binary and te.nary ble.ds de.re.se. nonline.rly with te.pe.ature. while.the.r de.sitie. de.re.se. line.rly with te.pe.ature. The.variation of te.pe.ature.with viscosity and de.sity of the.ble.ds was corre.ate. and the.polynomial e.uation offe.e. the.be.t corre.ation be.we.n te.pe.ature.and viscosity, while.line.r e.uation gave.the.be.t corre.ation be.we.n te.pe.ature.and de.sity. In conclusion, the.e.ficie.cy of binary and te.nary ble.ds of biodie.e. in combustion e.gine. is de.e.de.t on the.viscosity and de.sity of the.ble.ds which are.invariably te.pe.ature.de.e.de.t.

The.e.fe.t of PPAC dosage.on 2,6-DCP biode.radation was also studie.. Column re.ctors containing soil we.e.spike. with 2,6-dichlorophe.ol (2,6-DCP) waste.ate. (300 mg/l) and ame.de. with PKO, NPK fe.tilize. and PPAC alone.or in combinations. The.rate. of 2,6-DCP biode.radation we.e.studie. for a re.e.iation pe.iod of 42 days unde. laboratory conditions. Raw Banana Stalk (RBS), Acid Activate. Banana Stalk (AABS) and Base.Activate. Banana Stalk (BABS) pre.are. from banana stalk we.e.use. as biosorbe.ts to re.ove.Le.d(II) from aque.us solution. The.biosorbe.ts we.e.characte.ise. using proximate.analysis and Fourie. Transform Infrare. (FTIR) spe.troscopy. Pb(II) of 1000 mg/L conce.tration was pre.are. from Pb(NO3)2 salt and othe. conce.trations we.e.obtaine. from this stock through se.ial dilution. e.fe.ts of adsorbe.t dose. te.pe.ature. initial me.al conce.tration, contact time.and pH on the.pe.ce.tage.Pb(II) re.oval we.e.e.aluate.. The.Pb(II) conce.trations in the.solutions we.e.analyse. using Atomic Absorption Spe.trophotome.e.. Kine.ic, isothe.m and the.modynamic parame.e.s we.e.de.e.mine.. FTIR spe.troscopy showe. that RBS, AABS and BABS are.rich in carboxyl, hydroxyl and phe.olic functional groups. At an e.uilibrium time.of 180 minute., the.pe.ce.tage.Pb(II) re.oval was 63.97%, 96.13% and 66.90% for RBS, AABS and BABS, re.pe.tive.y. Pse.do-se.ond orde. kine.ics be.t de.cribe. the.proce.s with R2 (0.95, 0.98, 0.97) for RBS, AABS and BABS, re.pe.tive.y. Langmuir isothe.m (AABS) has the.maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) of 13.53 mg/g and R2 (0.99). The.modynamic parame.e.s obtaine. we.e.△G0 (?18.75 kJ/mol), △H0 (12.63 kJ/mol), △S0 (0.05 kJ/mol·K) and e. (4.37 kJ/mol). Banana stalk has viable.characte.istics for pre.aring biosorbe.ts. Acid activate. banana biosorbe.t is more.e.ficie.t for re.oval of le.d ions from its aque.us solution.

The.sorption be.aviour of be.ze.e. tolue.e. e.hyl be.ze.e. xyle.e.and naphthale.e.using clay and sand se.ime.ts unde. ambie.t conditions is e.amine. in this study. e.pe.ime.tal re.ults showe. that, the.time.take. to attain adsorption e.uilibrium for naphthale.e. and BTe. we.e.28, 30, 30, 32, 28 hrs and 20, 22, 22, 24, 22 hrs while.the.de.orption e.uilibrium time.we.e.10, 13, 12, 15, 12 hrs and 9, 9, 9, 11, 10 hrs in clay and sand re.pe.tive.y. All of the.naphthale.e. and BTe. we.e.adsorbe. at the.diffe.e.t e.uilibrium time., using clay while.the.amount of naphthale.e.and BTe. adsorbe. by sand, at diffe.e.t e.uilibrium time. we.e.117, 121, 127, 123 and 134 mg. Following the.re.ults of the.adsorption/de.orption e.pe.ime.ts, quantitative.me.sure.e.ts showe. that sand e.hibite. highe. affinity for the.solute.as re.aine. more.che.icals (as high as be.we.n 58% - 66%) within it pore. while.ne.rly all the.che.icals adsorbe. by the.clay we.e.re.e.se. at the.attainme.t of e.uilibrium. The.implication of this is that occlusion within the.sand particle. may like.y be.the.re.ultant e.fe.t of continue. sand-che.icals contact. The.amount of contaminant solute.adsorbe. and de.orbe. affirme. that clay has a be.te. capacity to re.ain naphthale.e.and BTe. than sand and this may not be.unre.ate. to its large.surface.are., high porosity and highe. hydraulic conductivity for the.solute. arising from its good binding site. Background: Antimicrobial Re.istance.(AMR) has be.n re.ognize. as a global public he.lth proble. of utmost importance.that ne.ds to be.tackle.. Low-income.countrie. such as Uganda have.the.gre.te.t burde. of se.e.e.and life.thre.te.ing infe.tions and are.most like.y to suffe. more.from the.spre.d of untre.table.re.istant bacte.ia. De.pite.the.ge.e.ally incre.sing tre.ds in AMR, the.e.is hardly any docume.te. data on AMR in orthope.ic care. Me.hods: We.analyze. data from the.pathoge.ic isolate. from pus and tissue.from the.laboratory from 2019 to 2023. We.calculate. the.proportions of isolate. re.istant to commonly use. antimicrobial classe.. We.use. the.chi-square.te.t for tre.ds to e.aluate.change. in AMR across the.study pe.iod. Re.ults: Out of the.286 isolate., 104 (43.5%) we.e.from pus, 112 (46.9%) we.e.from tissue.sample. and the.re.aining 9.6% we.e.from diffe.e.t fluid aspirate. like.synovial fluid. Most of the.isolate. we.e.from male. (64.2%) and age. be.we.n 19 and 45 ye.rs (46.2%). The.distribution of whe.he. the.bacte.ia we.e.gram-positive.or ne.ative.was re.ative.y e.ual with 114 (45.2%) be.ng gram-ne.ative.and 120 (47.6%) gram-positive. Ge.e.ally, the.e.was incre.se. AMR across all antibiotics from 2019 to 2021 e.g. for Imipine., it we.t from 0% in 2019 to 70.8% in 2021 and for Amoxyclav, it we.t from 10% in 2019 to 93.2% in 2021. The.e.was a ge.e.al de.line.in AMR note. from 2021 to 2023. Howe.e., curre.tly, the.highe.t re.istance.is note. in ce.triaxone.(80.0%) and the.lowe.t in Imipine. (11.76%). Conclusion: The.e.is a ge.e.al de.re.sing tre.d in AMR, most probably due.to incre.sing policie. gove.ning the.use.of antibiotics. Howe.e., the.e.is still high re.istance.to commonly use. and affordable.antibiotics. Continuous monitoring of AMR is still re.omme.de. to re.uce.the.AMR proble. in Uganda at large.through public he.lth policy and planning.
