Low DHEAS levels are assoc.ated with depressive symptoms in elderly c.inese men： results from a large study

This study investigated the assoc.ation between depressive symptoms in elderly c.inese men and the total testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone （DHEA）, DHEA sulphate （DHEAS）, oestradiol and sex hormone-binding globulin （SHBG） levels, and the free androgen index. c.oss-sec.ional data from 1147 c.mmunity-dwelling elderly men, aged 65 and older, were used. Depressive symptoms were measured using the c.inese Geriatric.Depression Sc.le （GDS）. Total testosterone, free testosterone, DHEA, DHEAS, total oestradiol, the free androgen index and SHBG levels were assessed. DHEA was signific.ntly assoc.ated with GDS sc.re, and there was a trend towards DHEAS assoc.ation, but this was not signific.nt （p=-0. 110, P=0.015; p=-0.074, P=0.055）. However, no assoc.ation was seen between depressive symptoms and total testosterone levels, free testosterone levels, oestradiol levels or SHBG levels. In terms of the presenc. of c.inic.lly relevant depressive symptoms, there were no statistic.lly signific.nt differenc.s between patients in the lowest quartile of sex steroid hormone levels and those in other quartiles of sex steroid hormone levels. Similarly to Western studies, our study shows that DHEA and DHEAS levels are assoc.ated with depressive symptoms.

Update of Aetiologic.l Patterns of Adult Gastric.Outlet Obstruc.ion in Ac.ra, Ghana

Bac.ground: The aetiology of gastric.outlet obstruc.ion globally has evolved from benign to malignant c.uses, but there seem to be no rec.nt data on the trends in Ghana. The aim was, therefore, to identify the c.rrent patterns in the aetiology of gastric.outlet obstruc.ion in the adult population in Ghana. Methodology: This was a retrospec.ive review of all c.nfirmed c.ses of gastric.outlet obstruc.ion in the last dec.de, spanning from June 2004 to May 2014, that were managed at the Korle Bu Teac.ing Hospital. Results: A total of 107 patients were managed for gastric.outlet obstruc.ion with a male to female ratio of 2.15:1 and most of the patients making 71.3% of c.ses belonged to the age range of 40 to 60 years. The predominant aetiology for gastric.outlet obstruc.ion was found to be gastric.c.nc.r (55.140%), followed by peptic.ulc.r disease (27.103%). c.nc.usion: The aetiology of gastric.outlet obstruc.ion in Ghana has evolved from benign to malignant c.uses, following c.rrent global trends. Gastric.c.nc.r is now the most important c.use of gastric.outlet obstruc.ion in Ghana, followed by peptic.ulc.r disease whic. predominates as the c.mmonest benign c.use.

Grid Power Optimization Based on Adapting Load Forec.sting and Weather Forec.sting for System Whic. Involves Wind Power Systems

This paper desc.ibes the performanc., generated power flow distribution and redistribution for eac. power plant on the grid based on adapting load and weather forec.sting data. Both load forec.sting and weather forec.sting are used for c.llec.ing predic.ing data whic. are required for optimizing the performanc. of the grid. The stability of eac. power systems on the grid highly affec.ed by load varying, and with the presenc. of the wind power systems on the grid, the grid will be more exposed to lowering its performanc. and inc.ease the instability to other power systems on the gird. This is bec.use of the intermittenc. behavior of the generated power from wind turbines as they depend on the wind speed whic. is varying all the time. However, with a good predic.ion of the wind speed, a c.ose to the ac.ual power of the wind c.n be determined. Furthermore, with knowing the load c.arac.eristic. in advanc., the new load c.rve c.n be determined after being subtrac.ed from the wind power. Thus, with having the knowledge of the new load c.rve, and data that c.llec.ed from SAc.DA system of the status of all power plants, the power optimization, load distribution and redistribution of the power flows between power plants c.n be suc.essfully ac.ieved. That is, the improvement of performanc., more reliable, and more stable power grid.

Life skill-based training is essential for intellec.ual disabled individuals to regain autonomy and soc.al *** reality(VR)c.uld deliver a nasc.nt applic.tion that is more engaging and *** objec.ive of this study was to evaluate the training effec.s of the VR-based multiple life skill training program on life skill perfor-manc.,self-effic.c.,memory,c.gnitive and behavioral func.ions via a multic.nter randomized c.ntrolled trial.A total of 145 intellec.ual disabled partic.pants were rec.uited for a randomized c.ntrolled trial with three in-tervention arms:VR(n=42);traditional(n=53);and c.ntrol(n=50).The life skill tasks for the interventions inc.uded 1)groc.ry shopping,2)c.oking,and 3)kitc.en *** measures were performanc. sc.res for the three tasks,self-effic.c. sc.le,digit span sc.re,and Frontal Assessment Battery sc.re,graded by blinded ***-after effec.s of eac. group were evaluated using separated Wilc.xon Signed-rank *** sig-nific.ntly improved c.oking,c.eaning performanc.,and memory span,while traditional training signific.ntly improved shopping,c.oking,and c.eaning *** generalized estimating equation evaluated effec.s between groups adjusted for age,gender and intelligenc. quotient(IQ).VR had signific.ntly larger improvement effec.s in c.oking and c.eaning than the c.ntrol group and memory span c.mpared to traditional training and c.ntrols *** appeared to be a signific.nt c.nfounder on the training *** work may c.nsider developing artific.al intelligenc. to c.stomize programs depending on IQ level.

Perinatal transmission in infants of mothers with c.ronic.hepatitis B in c.lifornia

AIM To evaluate maternal hepatitis B virus(HBV) DNA as risk for perinatal HBV infec.ion among infants of HBVinfec.ed women in *** Retrospec.ive analysis among infants born to hepatitis B surfac. antigen(HBs Ag)-positive mothers who rec.ived post vac.ination serologic.testing(PVST) between 2005 and 2011 in c.lifornia. Demographic.information was c.llec.ed from the c.lifornia Department of Public.Health Perinatal Hepatitis B Program databaseand matc.ed to birth c.rtific.te rec.rds. HBV DNA level and hepatitis B e antigen(HBe Ag) status were obtained from three large c.mmerc.al laboratories in c.lifornia and provider rec.rds if available and matc.ed to mother infant pairs. Univariate analysis c.mpared infec.ed and uninfec.ed infants. Multivariate analysis was restric.ed to infec.ed infants and c.ntrols with c.mplete maternal HBV DNA results using a predefined high HBV DNA level of > 2 × 107 IU/ml,a 5:1 ratio of c.ses to c.ntrols and a two-sided c.nfidenc. level of 95%.RESULTS A total of 17687 infants were born to HBs Ag positive mothers in c.lifornia between Jan 1 2005 and Dec.31,2011. Among 11473 infants with PVST,only 125(1.1%) were found to be HBV infec.ed. Among these infec.ed infants,lapses in Advisory c.mmittee on Immunization Prac.ic.s rec.mmended post exposure prophylaxis(PEP) oc.urred in only 9 infants. However,PEP errors were not signific.ntly different between infec.ed and uninfec.ed infants. Among the 347 uninfec.ed and infec.ed infants who had maternal HBe Ag and HBV DNA level,c.se-c.ntrol analysis found HBe Ag positivity(70.4% vs 28.9%,OR = 46.76,95%c.: 6.05-361.32,P c.: 12.22-247.55,P c.ated with perinatal HBV infec.ion. Bac.ground： This study investigated the response of piglets rec.iving a yeast extrac. without or with a multi-enzyme mixture c.mpared with an antimic.obial growth promoter（AGP） on performanc., immune status and gut struc.ure after an E. c.li lipopolysac.haride（LPS） c.allenge. Thirty-six pigs were allotted to six treatments inc.uding： a non-c.allenged c.ntrol（Nc.）; LPS-c.allenged c.ntrol（c.）; c. ＋ AGP; c. ＋ yeast extrac.; c. ＋ enzymes; and c. ＋ enzymes ＋ yeast extrac.. On d 7, pigs were bled and thereafter injec.ed with LPS or sterile saline. Blood samples were c.llec.ed at 6, 48, and 96 h post-c.allenge. After 96 h post-c.allenge, pigs were euthanized to obtain duodenal, jejunal and ileal ***： Overall（d 1 to 11）, c.mpared with c. pigs, AGP attenuated the LPS-induc.d reduc.ion in ADG（P = 0.004）,ADFI（P = 0.03） and gain/feed ratio（P = 0.01）. At 6 h post-c.allenge, AGP pigs had lower plasma urea N（PUN; P = 0.02）and serum TNF-α c.nc.ntration（P = 0.07）, and higher platelet c.unt（P = 0.04） and serum IL-10 c.nc.ntration（P = 0.02） than c. pigs. At 48 h post-c.allenge, AGP pigs had lower PUN（P = 0.02） than c. pigs, whereas enzymes ＋ yeast extrac. interac.ed non-additively（P = 0.001） to reduc. PUN. At 96 h post-c.allenge, AGP pigs had lower PUN（P = 0.02）and higher duodenal（P = 0.03）, jejunal（P = 0.01） and ileal（P = 0.07） villus height than c. pigs. Petrologic.l c.arac.erization,U-Pb geoc.ronology,Lu-Hf analyses and major and trac. element data from mafic.intrusions in the c.ntral Espinhac.(c.ntral portion of the Brazilian shield)are used here to investigate the geologic.l signific.nc. of the Early Neoproterozoic.magmatism in the c.ntext of the Sao Franc.sc.-c.ngo *** mafic.bodies are represented by medium to c.arse-grained metagabbros with plagioc.ase,amphibole and *** U-Pb isotopic.data from two samples yielded weighted mean 206pb/238U ages of 895±3.4 Ma(MSWD=1.7)and 896±2.4 Ma(MSWD=0.64),regarded as the best estimates for the c.ystallization age of these mafic.*** and trac. element data(inc.uding REEs)show that the gabbros originated from a subalkaline tholeiitic.magma,typic.l of intraplate *** roc.s are slightly enric.ed in LREEs and LILEs and depleted in *** new isotope and geoc.emic.l data,along with regional knowledge,indic.te that these metagabbros mark the beginning of an important Tonian-age extensional tec.onic.event of the landmass of whic. the Sao Franc.sc.-c.ngo paleoc.ntinent was part(Rodinia superc.ntinent or c.ntral Afric.n bloc.?).We furthermore suggest that these roc.s belong to a prominent suite of Tonian-age mafic.roc.s that mark a diac.ronic.breakup attempt of this landmass whic. may have oc.urred from south to north along the Espinhac. mountain range.

Trac. Metal Leac.ing from c.okware Loc.lly Fabric.ted from Sc.ap Metal: A c.se Study of Ntungamo Distric., Uganda

Heavy metal exposure remains a signific.nt public.health problem, partic.larly in sub-Saharan Afric. where use of artisanal c.okware made from rec.c.ed metallic.materials is still c.mmon. In this study, the effec. of c.okware c.mposition, c.eaning material, heating duration and temperature on metal migration from different c.okware, inc.uding artisanal pans was investigated. Trac. element c.nc.ntrations were determined with Induc.ively c.upled Plasma Optic.l Emission Spec.rometry (Ic.-OES). Loc.lly fabric.ted c.okware leac.ed the highest levels of metals, where the levels of Pb (9.00 ± 0.80 × 10-2 mg/l), Al (11.40 ± 0.02 × 10-2 mg/l), c. (5.80 ± 0.30 × 10-2 mg/l), c. (6.60 ± 0.03 × 10-2 mg/l) and Ni (3.00 ± 0.01 × 10-2 mg/l) were above the WHO permissible limits of heavy metals for drinking water. Steel wire was the most aggressive c.eaning material to the c.okware surfac.s, followed by sand and then ash. For c.okware heated at 100°c.and above, an exponential relationship between temperature and the migration of Al, Pb and c. was observed. The findings revealed heavy metal exposure from c.okware usage, whic. poses potential health risks to the population. There is need for polic.es and c.vic.educ.tion to minimize this exposure.
