Psychophysiological Effects of Zembrin^®Using Quantitative EEG Source Density in Combination with Eye-Tracking in 60 healthy Subjects. A Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled, 3-Armed Study with Parallel Design

The endemic South African succulent plant Sceletium tortuosum (L.) N.E. Br., family Mesembryathemaceae, is known as kanna in Nama, kougoed in Afrikaans, and sceletium in English. The plant has been used as a tea and as a masticatory for millennia by indigenous San hunter-gatherers and Nama pastoralists for endurance and well-being. It has been reported that the plant “gives strength to their limbs, and takes away pain, and makes their memory strong”. The current investigation aimed at the psychophysiological characterization of 25.0 and 50.0 mg of a special extract marketed as Zembrin® in comparison to placebo using a new methodology called “EnkephaloVision”. This combination of EEG Neurocode-Tracking and Eye-Tracking allows for concomitant analysis of time epochs of only 364 ms duration. Spectral EEG analysis during cognitive and emotional challenges revealed statistically significant increases of delta (p hmetic calculation and watching a boring animal video) and theta spectral power (p hese same challenges) in the presence of Zembrin® within the frontal brain. It is these same increases of slow waves in the frontal brain that are described in the literature during performance of mental tests. This indicates a positive effect of Zembrin® on the electrical activity of the brain during cognitive processing. In addition, alpha1 and alpha2 spectral power in the frontal brain was increased during several challenges including brain teasing, arithmetic calculations and performance of a memory test. From the literature, increases of spectral alpha1 power indicate a greater degree of calmness and may represent decreased depressive symptoms, while increases in alpha2 waves have been related to memory. Effect of Zembrin^(█) on Brain Electrical Activity in 60 Older Subjects after 6 Weeks of Daily Intake.A Prospective,Randomized,Double-Blind,Placebo-Controlled,3-Armed Study in a Parallel Design

Zembrin? is a botanical functional food and dietary supplement ingredient sold in the USA, and Canada for enhancing mood, decreasing anxiety and stress and improving cognitive function under stress. It is a proprietary extract of a cultivated selection of Sceletium tortuosum. The present investigation aimed at the measurement of the effect of 25 or 50 mg of Zembrin? in comparison to placebo after daily repetitive intake for 6 weeks. Sixty healthy male (n = 32) and female (n = 28) right-handed subjects between 50 and 80 years old (59.7 ± 5.43 and 56.7 ± 5.88 years, respectively) were recruited. The EEG was recorded bipolarly from 17 surface electrodes (CATEEM?) before and 1 h after intake. Six cognitive tests were performed: d2-test, memory test, calculation performance test, reaction time test, number identifying test and number connection test. Three questionnaires were included: Profile of Mood States, hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale and a sleep questionnaire. Quantitative EEG revealed increases of delta activity during performance of the d2-test, the number identification and number connection test in the fronto-temporal brain region. higher theta activity was seen during relaxation and performance of the d2-test after intake of 50 mg of Zembrin?. Statistically conspicuous increases of alpha1 spectral power were seen in the relaxed state. With respect to alpha2 spectral power larger increases were observed in the centro- occipital region. Discriminant analysis revealed a projection of Zembrin? data into the vicinity of the calming preparation Calmvalera tablets and a Ginkgo-Ginseng mixture. Statistically significant improvement during performance of the arithmetic calculation test and number connection test was documented. The hAM-A anxiety score revealed a statistically significant decrease (p = 0.03) after six weeks. The Synthesis and Cytotoxicity of Novel Thiophene Derivatives Derived from 2-(4-Oxo-4,4-Dihydrothiazol-2-yl) Acetonitrile

The reaction of the 2-(4-oxo-4,4-dihydrothiazol-2-yl)acetonitrile 1 with cyaclopentanone (2) afforded the condensed product 3. The latter underwent a series of heterocyclizations through its reaction with different reagents. Moreover, compound 1 underwent the Gewald’s thiophene to afford compounds 15 and 17. The reaction of either hydrazine hydrate or phenylhydrazine with compound 17 gave the hydrazide derivatives 19a and 19b, respectively. The cytotoxicity of the newly synthesized products was measured towards the three cancer cell lines MCF-7, NCI-h460 and SF-268. The study showed that compounds 3, 5, 9c, 11, 13a, 13c, 17 and 19b were the most active compounds towards the three cancer cell lines.

背景:结直肠切除加回肠储袋肛管吻合术(IPAA)是难治性溃疡性结肠炎和家族性腺瘤性息肉病的标准外科术式。然而,储袋扭转时有发生,尽管发生率很低。本研究旨在探讨IPAA患者术后储袋扭转的发生率、临床表现和治疗。方法:于2018年8月10日通过医学文献图书馆系统检索已发表的文献,由两名独立的研究人员分别进行文献筛选、数据提取、方法学质量评估。同时,检索美国Mayo Clinic 2008年1月至2018年8月间的电子病历发现了1例储袋扭转病例。结果:一项报道了IPAA长期结局的大样本研究显示,储袋扭转发生率为0.18%(3/1700)。本研究共纳入22例储袋扭转患者进行分析,其中18例原发疾病为溃疡性结肠炎。全组病例中位年龄32岁,女性占73%。IPAA术后出现储袋扭转的中位时间为36个月,出现首发症状至诊断储袋扭转的中位时间为24小时。腹痛是最常报道的症状(76%)。多数病例是经腹部CT作出初步诊断(76%,13/17)。11例患者行内镜治疗,仅1例(9%)成功。20例患者行手术治疗,最常采用的手术方式是储袋固定术和储袋切除术。5例(25%)患者接受了再次IPAA手术。结论:储袋扭转是IPAA术后一种罕见但严重的并发症,出现梗阻症状时应考虑储袋扭转的可能。内镜治疗成功率非常低;如果能早期诊断、早期手术,手术治疗疗效确切。

Protective effects of Aristolochia longa and Aquilaria malaccensis against lead induced acute liver injury in rats

Objective: To investigate the protective effects of Aristolochia longa (A. longa) and Aquilaria malaccensis (A. malaccensis) on acute hepatotoxicity induced by lead in female albino rats. Methods: Twenty five (25) apparently healthy female Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups of five rats in each: control, Pb, Pb + A. longa (Ar), Pb+ A. malaccensis (Aq), and Pb+ A. longa (Ar) + A. malaccensis (Aq) lead (100 mg/kg b.w.) as Pb (C2h3O2)2 added in their drinking water for 75 days. A. longa (rhizome powder at a dose of 10 g/kg of diet ) and A. malaccensis (heartwood powder at a dose 10 g/kg of diet) were added to the feed during the last 15 days of lead exposed in the animals. Results: Obtained results revealed that lead treatment caused a significant increase in serum GOT, GPT and ALP activities and in liver of MDA level and CAT activity. In contrast, it led to an decrease in the liver GOT, GPT and GST activities and in GSh level in rats. Also, the results clearly showed that lead causes alterations of hepatic tissue in comparison with controls. Our results showed that treatment with A. malaccensis and A. longa a partial correction of the previous parameters. The histological observations confirmed the hepatoprotection results by the biochemical parameters. Conclusions: Results demonstrated beneficial effects of A. longa and A. malaccensis treatment in Pb-induced oxidative stress and tissue damage in liver.

Modeling Experimental Design for Photo-Fenton Degradation of Methomyl

Modeling experimental design was used to study the main effects and the interaction effects between operational parameters in the photocatalytic degradation of pesticide methomyl. The important parameters which affect the removal efficiency of methomyl such as concentration of Fe(NO3)3, concentration of h2O2, initial concentration of the pesticide and ph. The parameters were coded as x1, x2, x3 and x4, consecutively, and were investigated at two levels (–1 and +1). The effects of individual variables and their interaction effects for dependent variables, namely, photocatalytic degradation efficiency (%) were determined. From the statistical analysis, the most effective parameters in the photocatalytic degradation efficiency were initial concentrations of the methomyl and Fe(NO3)3. The interaction between initial concentration of the pesticide and Fe(NO3)3 was the most influencing interaction. The optimum conditions that were obtained for the photocatalytic degradation of methomyl were: minimum quantity of contaminant: 6 × 10–5 mol.L–1, maximum quantity of Fe(NO3)3: 5 × 10–4 mol.L-1, initial ph of the solution: 3 and maximum quantity h2O2: 10–2 mol.L–1.

Decaying of Nitrogen Second Positive System by Addition of h<sub>2</sub>Gas in Air DB Discharge

Effects of addition of h2 gas in air DB discharge on its optical and electrical characteristics have been studied. Optical emission spectroscopy is used to investigate the effect of hydrogen admixing on the emission intensity of the nitrogen second positive systems (300 - 420 nm) and the relative population density of states. An obvious decaying of the emission intensity of the nitrogen second positive bands with the introduction of h2 has been observed. It has been concluded that quenching of the nitrogen excited state is the responsible reason of this decaying. Mechanisms of excitation and ionization processes of nitrogen molecules in this mixture have been studied. Processes which are responsible for the decaying of the population density of have been reported. Addition of h2 to air improves the electrical characteristics of the DB discharge. An abrupt increasing in the electron density, reached about thirty fold at h2 flow rate of 3 L/min, as a result of increasing the ionization processes has been reported. The breakdown voltage of the discharge decreased from 1.87 kV to about 1.25 kV by the addition of h2 at flow rate of 3 L/min.

在合金熔炼和加工过程中,往往需要知道液相线温度,以便确定相关工艺参数。建立能从成分预测铝硅系工业铸造合金液相线温度的模型。收集工业合金实测数据,采用模糊推理方法,建立了合金液相线温度的自适应神经-模糊推理模型。它具有Takagi-Sugeno型网络结构,能直接从数据中提取推理规则,并可利用前馈神经网络的学习能力调整参数。与现有的其它统计回归模型相比,模糊推理模型能反映成分之间的交互作用,具有更高的预测精度。在铸造合金研究、热力学计算和凝固过程数值模拟时,所建立的模型可用于计算工业合金的液相线温度。

Gemcitabine followed by radiotherapy in treatment of newly diagnosed high-grade gliomas
