Protective effect of Citrus reticulata peel extract against potassium dichromate-induced reproductive toxicity in rats

Relationship of Cognition, Depression and Anxiety to Glycemic Control in Older Adults with Diabetes

Objective: This study aimed to assess the relationship of cognition, depression and anxiety to glycemic control in elders with diabetes. DM is a chronic medical condition. Its control depends on adherence to medical therapy and making decisions related to lifestyle changes. This decision making capacity is affected by many factors including cognition and psychological status. Design: It was a case control study. Setting: It was done in Ain Shams University Hospital inpatients and DM outpatient clinic, Cairo, Egypt. Participants: Of the one hundred diabetic patients aged ≥ 60 years, 50 had Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) ≥ 7.5 (cases) and 50 had Hb A1c 7.5 (controls). Measurements: Cognition was assessed using minimental status examination (MMSE) test, Mattis Organic Mental Syndrome Screening Examination (MOMSSE) and Cambridge Cognitive Examination (CAMCOG) test. Geriatric depression scale-15 (GDS-15) was performed for depression assessment, while anxiety was assessed by DSM IV criteria. Laboratory investigations included: fasting blood sugar (FBS), post-prandial blood sugar (PPBS), glycated haemoglobin (Hb A1c), low density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), total cholesterol, and triglycerides (TG). Results: Significant difference was found between the two groups regarding scores of cognitive tests: MMSE score (p = 0.004);below average (p = 0.02) and average scores (p = 0.05) of MOMSSE;CAMCOG score (p = 0.015);and CAMCOG divided items score including orientation (p = 0.003), comprehension (p = 0.005), expression (p = 0.020), attention (p = 0.002), and abstraction (p = 0.008) as well as depression screening scores (P = 0.002). Using Receiver Operating Characteristic, CAMCOG had better sensitivity and MOMSSE had better specificity. Conclusion: Cognitive impairment was associated with poor glycemic control, and impairment in attention and abstraction, related to executive function, functions were found to be associated with poor glycemic control. In Frail elderly Patients, Low-Dose Gemcitabine over 6-Hour Infusion Is Equally Effective and Less Toxic Than the Standard Gemcitabine Protocol for Advanced Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma: A Randomized Phase II Trial

Background:?Treatment of frail elderly patients with pancreatic cancer is still a major problem due to intolerance to standard chemotherapy doses. Aim:?This study aims to compare the low-dose gemcitabine over 6 hours (LD6H) to the standard gemcitabine protocol in terms of clinical benefit, survival, and safety in the frail elderly patients with advanced pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Methods:?Patients enrolled in this trial were randomly assigned by in a 1:1 fashion via closed envelope method to either receive gemcitabine of 1000 mg/m2?over 30-minute infusion on days 1, 8, and 15 of every 4-week cycle (standard protocol arm) or gemcitabine as a weekly low-dose (250 mg/m2) over 6-hour infusion (LD6H arm). Results:?We enrolled eighty-two eligible frail elderly patients with advanced pancreatic cancer. The patients were randomly assigned to receive either standard gemcitabine protocol (40 patients) or low-dose (250 mg/m2) gemcitabine over 6-hour infusion, given weekly (42 patients). There was no significant difference between the standard group and low-dose group as regard of the overall response rate (p = 0.654), the disease control rate (DCR) (p = 0.845), the median progression-free survival (PFS) (p = 0.908) and the overall survival (OS) (p = 0.331). The low-dose regimen had a significantly lower incidence of adverse effects grades 3 or 4 when compared to the standard regimen: (p = 0.024 for fatigue, p = 0.027 for hypotension, p = 0.012 for each anemia as well as thrombocytopenia, and p = 0.006 for neutropenia). Conclusion:?Low-dose gemcitabine over 6-hour infusion is equally effective and less toxic when compared to standard gemcitabine protocol in frail elderly patients with advanced pancreatic adenocarcinoma. So, we recommend the low-dose gemcitabine for frail elderly patients with advanced pancreatic cancer.

Metakaolin as an Active Pozzolan for Cement That Improves Its Properties and Reduces Its Pollution Hazard

Prepared metakaolin produced by calcination of a kaolin sample at 750°C after soaking for 5 hrs was tested as an active pozzolan for locally produced cement. Blended pastes of partially replaced ordinary Portland cement with different metakaolin amounts 5%, 10% and 15% were prepared, then they were hydrated with water for various time intervals of 1, 3, 7, 14 and 28 days. At each time interval, the hydrated paste specimens were tested for compressive strength, hydration kinetics and followed up using differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffractometry analyses and scanning electron microscopy techniques. Results showed that the blended pastes OPC-MK10 recorded the highest compressive strength values at all the hydration times reaching 33.10, 86.40, 101.20, 112, and 122 MPa with increasing the age of hydration as compared with the neat samples which recorded 31.70, 65.20, 72.6, 82 and 101.30 MPa respectively. Meanwhile, the OPC-MK10 blend showed a decrease in the free CaO content reaching 4.07%, 4.27%, 4.23%, 4.19%, and 4.11% CaO with increasing age of hydration compared with the neat samples which recorded 4.27%, 5.15%, 5.42%, 5.61%, and 5.96% CaO respectively. The DSC thermograms results for the hardened neat and OPC-Mk10 pastes at the 14 and 28 hydration days showed the formation of hydrated materials mainly calcium silicate hydrates, calcium sulphoaluminate hydrates and calcium aluminates hydrates. The X-ray diffractometry analyses of both hardened neat and OPC- MK10 showed that, the intensity of calcium hydroxide peaks of OPC-MK10 was lower than in case of neat OPC, while the peak of the hydration products of calcium silicate hydrates and calcium aluminates silicate hydrates of OPC- MK10 samples were of higher intensity than in case of neat OPC. Scanning electron microscopy micrographs indicated the formation of denser micro- structure for the hardened OPC-MK10 paste as compared to neat OPC pastes after the 28 days age of hydration.

Numerical Investigation of an Impinging Diffusion Flames-Effects of Fuel Variability

In our study, we investigate the differences between the combustion of different hydrocarbon fuels CH4, C3H8, C4H10. A numerical simulation of an impinging jet diffusion flames is used. The jet injector has a 10 mm in diameter and the distance between the jet flame and the vertical wall is 2 time half diameter. The fuel jet velocity was fixed for 11.8 m/s, corresponding to a Reynolds number of 6881. The flame characteristics varied from hydrocarbon to another for the same Reynolds number. The combustion products of CO, CO2, NO, OH, are depending on the methane and propane and butane flames for the same conditions. The temperature of the flame was varied from hydrocarbon to another the same as for the chemical species production rate. The concentration of the thermal and prompt NO pollutant depends on the temperature flow field and on the thermochemical characteristics of the hydrocarbon fuels.

Clinical Significance of Serum Galectin-1 and Its Tissue Immunohistochemical Expression in Serous Ovarian Carcinoma Patients

Objectives: Serous ovarian carcinoma (SOC) is the commonest ovarian carcinoma type with poor prognosis due to early metastasis and first presentation with advanced stage. In this work, we investigated serum level of Galactin-1 (Gal-1) and its tissue immunohistochemical expression in SOC patients at different stages trying to find out its significance as a diagnostic and prognostic marker. Patients and methods: The study included 95 females I-Control group: Twenty five healthy females;II-Patients group: Seventy females diagnosed as SOC at different stages;Stage I: 8 cases, Stage II: 12 cases, Stage III: 32 cases and Stage VI:18 cases. Serum Galectin-1 and CA-125 were measured by elIZA and tissue Galectin-1 was assessed by immunohistochemistry. All patients were followed for up to 3 years after surgery. Results: Serum Gal-1 and CA-125 levels were significantly higehr in SOC patients compared to controls (p 0.001). We found a direct positive statistically significant correlation between serum Gal-1 and CA125 levels (p 0.001). Serum Gal-1 at cut off value > 135 ng/ml was superior to CA-125 a cut off value > 49 u/ml with sensitivity, specificity of 100%, vs 88.57, 96% for CA-125. Serum Gal-1 was significantly associated with tumor stage (p 0.001). Immunohistochemistry showed that patients with strong Gal-1 expression had higher serum level (p = 0.002). Stromal and tumor Gal-1 expression were significantly correlated with tumor grade (p 0.001) and stage (p = 0.001). Serum Gal-1, CA-125 and IHC Gal-1 expression were associated with poor survival (p 0.001, p = 0.009 and p = 0.002) respectively. Conclusion: Serum Gal-1 and its tissue IHC expression are useful diagnostic and prognostic markers for SOC patients.

This article presents research and development of an interoperable platform to facilitate, monitor and coordinate groundwater data sharing. This system was orchestrated by a number of services described by Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) such as Sensor Observation Service (SOS) and other services for the use of mapping data, Web Feature Services (WFS), Web Map Service (WMS), and catalogue services (CSW). An important activity for our project was the establishment of a portal for geographic data and services. Geoportal developed for this project will promote and facilitate access to groundwater data and share theme more openly. Otherwise our system has been designed to provide a powerful tool that enhances the ability of regional staff to monitor near real-time groundwater data (i.e.?piezometric level) and as a result will help provide a more effective response to environmental upsets.

Modelling Uncertainty of Stream Networks Derived from elevation Data Using Two Free Softwares: R and SAGA

Stream networks are considered important units in many environmental decision making processes. The extraction of streams using digital elevation models (DEMs) presents many advantages. However it is very sensitive to the uncertainty of the elevation datasets used. The main aim of this paper is to implement geostatistical simulations and assess the propagated uncertainty and map the error of location streams. First, point sampled elevations are used to fit a variogram model. Next two hundred DEM realizations are generated using conditional sequential Gaussian simulation;the stream network map is extracted for each of these realizations, and the collection of stream networks is analyzed to quantify the error propagation. At each grid cell, the probability of the occurrence of a stream and the propagated error are estimated. The more probable stream network are delineated and compared with the digital stream network derived from topographic map. The method is illustrated using a small dataset (8742 sampled elevations) for Anaguid Saharan platform. All computations are run in two free softwares: R and SAGA. R is used to fit variogram and to run sequential Gaussian simulation. SAGA is used to extract streams via RSAGA library.

Protective effects of Aristolochia longa and Aquilaria malaccensis against lead induced acute liver injury in rats

Objective: To investigate the protective effects of Aristolochia longa (A. longa) and Aquilaria malaccensis (A. malaccensis) on acute hepatotoxicity induced by lead in female albino rats. Methods: Twenty five (25) apparently healthy female Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups of five rats in each: control, Pb, Pb + A. longa (Ar), Pb+ A. malaccensis (Aq), and Pb+ A. longa (Ar) + A. malaccensis (Aq) lead (100 mg/kg b.w.) as Pb (C2H3O2)2 added in their drinking water for 75 days. A. longa (rhizome powder at a dose of 10 g/kg of diet ) and A. malaccensis (heartwood powder at a dose 10 g/kg of diet) were added to the feed during the last 15 days of lead exposed in the animals. Results: Obtained results revealed that lead treatment caused a significant increase in serum GOT, GPT and ALP activities and in liver of MDA level and CAT activity. In contrast, it led to an decrease in the liver GOT, GPT and GST activities and in GSH level in rats. Also, the results clearly showed that lead causes alterations of hepatic tissue in comparison with controls. Our results showed that treatment with A. malaccensis and A. longa a partial correction of the previous parameters. The histological observations confirmed the hepatoprotection results by the biochemical parameters. Conclusions: Results demonstrated beneficial effects of A. longa and A. malaccensis treatment in Pb-induced oxidative stress and tissue damage in liver.
