Phenolic composition and antioxidant properties of Eryngium maritimum (sea holly)

Objective: To examine the antioxidant potential of Tunisian Eryngium maritimum (E. maritimum) leaf, root and stems extracts, as well as their phenolic compositions. Methods: The antioxidant activity of different extracts was assessed using DPPH free radical and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assays. Phenolic profiles were determined by means of liquid chromatography (HPLC-DAD). Results: All plant parts were a rich source of phenolics. Polyphenols and flavonoids were present in leaf extracts. E. maritimum leaf extracts displayed the strongest H2O2 scavenging activity (IC50 = 76.83 μg/mL) and the highest DPPH scavenging activity value (IC50 = 47.87 μg/mL) compared to other extracts. Good relationships were observed between antioxidant activities and the total phenolic and flavonoid contents. Nine bioactive compounds were detected in E. maritimum extracts. Conclusions: Our results provided evidence that E. maritimum could be an interesting source of natural antioxidant that can be used to treat divers diseases.

There is a common belief that China plays a crucial role in African economies,although most academic researchers are claiming that Chinese Outward Direct Investment has a more negative than positive effect on economic growth in *** this matter,China’s investment strategy is widely described as ‘aggressive’ that aims to exploit natural resources and local labor while weakening *** conclusion is supported by the fact that China’s demand for natural resources has been growing exponentially in the last years and the pressure of meeting the domestic needs increased.1 China’s realized FDI Outflow stock in Africa has increased from only US$ 500 million in 2003 to staggering US$ 39,9 billion in 2016.2 In fact,during the forum on China-Africa Cooperation in September 2018,China promised another US$ 60 billion for projects in Africa in the form of investments and loans allocated within the next years.3 Primary FDI recipients since early 2000 were mostly Africa’s resourcerich countries that have received assistance in the form of loans and financial aid.4 However,there has been a shift towards the Chinese ODI5 strategy in African countries in recent years,but only a few research studies are currently available that have been conducted to analyze China’s investment role and motives in these so-called resource-poor countries6 which in contrast mainly rely on agriculture,industrial goods,and *** focus on resource-poor countries in Africa as an underlying research topic of this paper is derived from recent statistics published by the World Bank stating that resource-poor countries represent a considerable share of Africa’s fastest-growing economies.7 Over the same period of rapid economic growth in those countries,Chinese Outward Direct Investment in resource-poor countries grew substantially.8 Both macroeconomic trends raise the question of why China is targeting those countries and to what extent has Chinese increased ODI contributed to the recent

Gossypol inhibits proliferation of endometrioma cells in culture

Aim： To evaluate the anti-proliferative activity and mitochondrial toxicity of gossypol in endometrioma cells maintained in short-term cultures. Methods：（A） Three endometrioma cell lines from patients were treated with 25 or 50 nmol/L gossypol for up to 12 days. The effect of gossypol on the cell growth was recorded. （B） A phosphorescence oxygen analyzer was used to determine the effects of gossypol on mitochondrial oxygen consumption of six endometrioma cell lines from patients. （C） Cellular gossypol accumulations in three endometrioma cell lines from patients were measured by high-pressure liquid chromatography. Results： Proliferation of the endometrioma cells was inhibited by 25 and 50 nmol/L gossypol. Respiration of the endometrioma cells was inhibited by 10 μmol/L gossypol. Cellular gossypol was detected in the endometrioma cell lines that were treated for 24 h with l0 and 0.3 μmol/L gossypol. Conclusion： Gossypol invokes a potent toxicity on cultured endometrioma cells.

AIM: To measure biochemical parameters in stomach biopsies and test their suitability as diagnostic biomarkers for gastritis and precancerous ***: Biopsies were obtained from the stomachs of two groups of patients(n = 40) undergoing fiberoptic endoscopy due to upper gastrointestinal symptoms. In the first group(n = 17), only the corpus region was examined. Biopsies were processed for microscopic examination and measurement of mitochondrial O2 consumption(cellular respiration), cellular adenosine triphosphate(ATP), glutathione(GSH), and caspase activity. In the second group of patients(n = 23), both corpus and antral regions were studied. Some biopsies were processed for microscopic examination, while the others were used for measurements of cellular respiration and GSH ***: Microscopic examinations of gastric corpus biopsies from 17 patients revealed normal mucosae in 8 patients, superficial gastritis in 7 patients, and chronic atrophic gastritis in 1 patient. In patients with normal histology, the rate(mean ± SD) of cellular respiration was 0.17 ± 0.02 μmol/L O2 min-1 mg-1, ATP content was 487 ± 493 pmol/mg, and GSH was 469 ± 98 pmol/mg. Caspase activity was detected in 3 out of 8 specimens. The values of ATP and caspase activity were highly variable. The presence of superficial gastritis had insignificant effects on the measured biomarkers. In the patient with atrophic gastritis, cellular respiration was high andATP was relatively low, suggesting uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation. In the second cohort of patients, the examined biopsies showed either normal or superficial gastritis. The rate of cellular respiration(O2. μmol/L min-1 mg-1) was slightly higher in the corpus than the antrum(0.18 ± 0.05 vs 0.15 ± 0.04, P = 0.019). The value of GSH was about the same in both tissues(310 ± 135 vs 322 ± 155, P = 0.692).CONCLUSION: The corpus mucosa was metabolically more active than the antrum tissue.
