Peripheral nerve injury impairs motor, sensory, and autonomic function, incurring substantial financial costs and diminished quality of life. For large nerve gaps, proximal lesions, or chronic nerve injury, the prognosis for recovery is particularly poor, even with autografts, the current gold standard for treating small to moderate nerve gaps. In vivo elongation of intact proximal stumps towards the injured distal stumps of severed peripheral nerves may offer a promising new strategy to treat nerve injury. This review describes several nerve lengthening strategies, including a novel internal fixator device that enables rapid and distal reconnection of proximal and distal nerve stumps.

End-to-end repair under no or low tension leads to improved outcomes for transected nerves with short gaps,compared to repairs with a graft.However,grafts are typically used to enable a tension-free repair for moderate to large gaps,as excessive tension can cause repairs to fail and catastrophically impede recovery.In this study,we tested the hypothesis that unloading the repair interface by redistributing tension away from the site of repair is a safe and feasible strategy for end-to-end repair of larger nerve gaps.Further,we tested the hypothesis that such an approach does not adversely affect structural and functional regeneration.In this study,we used a rat sciatic nerve injury model to compare the integrity of repair and several regenerative outcomes following end-to-end repairs of nerve gaps of increasing size.In addition,we proposed the use of a novel implantable device to safely repair end-to-end repair of larger nerve gaps by redistributing tension away from the repair interface.Our data suggest that redistriubution of tension away from the site of repair enables safe end-to-end repair of larger gap sizes.In addition,structural and functional measures of regeneration were equal or enhanced in nerves repaired under tension – with or without a tension redistribution device – compared to tension-free repairs.Provided that repair integrity is maintained,end-to-end repairs under tension should be considered as a reasonable surgical strategy.All animal experiments were performed under the approval of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee of University of California,San Diego(Protocol S11274).

Seasonal Abundance and Diversity of birds of Prey and Owls in Al Wathba Wetland Reserve in Abu Dhabi, UAE

Inland wetlands in Abu Dhabi Emirate are wintering and stopover sites for migratory birds of prey. We conducted long-term regular monitoring surveys in Al Wathba Wetland Reserve (AWWR) from January 1995 to December 2022. both diurnal and occasionally nocturnal surveys were undertaken to record the migratory raptors and owls in the Wetland Reserve. During the study, a total of 1282 regular monitoring visits were undertaken and 27 species of diurnal raptors and owls representing five families and three orders were detected. These represent 57% of the total species of birds of prey recorded in the UAE. Overall, 63% of all the species that we observed were Accipitriformes followed by 26% Falconiformes and 11% Strigiformes. We found that changes in mean daily temperature have a positive effect on raptor species diversity and abundance in the Wetland Reserve. The species encounter rate was higher in low temperature as compared to high temperature and overall regression equation was statistically significant F (4, 1126) = 8.49), p = 0.00). However, the numbers of raptors did not vary significantly across the years (p = 0.51). Western Marsh-harrier (Circus aeruginosus) and Greater Spotted Eagle (Clanga clanga) were recorded to be the most abundant species in the wetland reserve followed by Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus). However, the encounter rate of globally threatened Greater Spotted Eagle was detected to have significantly decreased since 2016. Moreover, 63% of the species detected were uncommon and rarely recorded such as 1) Saker Falcon 2) Lanner Falcon 3) Long-eared Owl & Merlin, which were the rare records from the wetland reserve. Furthermore, 27 years of regular monitoring in the wetland have yielded diverse diurnal raptors and owl fauna (H) = 0.83, (E) = 1.43 (Shannon Diversity Index). The results demonstrate that long-term monitoring surveys in arid environments are essential to determine the trends in the raptor populations and to document rare and globally important species.

Collision risk assessment of reduced aircraft separation minima in procedural airspace using advanced communication and navigation

With the advancement of Communication,Navigation and Surveillance(CNS)technolo-gies such as space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance-broadcast/Contract(ADS-b/C),large separation minima may be reduced in procedural airspaces.It is of great significance to know the upper limit of the Reduced Separation Minima(RSM)for a procedural airspace and the corre-sponding consequences on collision risk with specifics of the advanced ADS-b and control interven-tion model.In this work,an interactive software is first developed for collision risk estimation.This software integrates the International Civil Aviation Organization(ICAO)collision risk models for lateral and longitudinal collision risk calculation for the Singapore procedural airspace.Results demonstrate that the lateral and longitudinal collision risk of Singapore procedural airspace with respect to current control procedures meets the ICAO Target Level of Safety(TLS)standard.Moreover,the feasibility of reducing the horizontal separations implemented in the Singapore pro-cedural airspace with respect to advanced CNS techniques is investigated.It is found that if advanced CNS technologies are applied,then the current 50-NM lateral and longitudinal separa-tion standards can be reduced to 22 NM(1 NM=1.825 km)and 20 NM,respectively,to meet the TLS standards based on current demand.A method is then devised to expand the traffic demand by p for p∈[10%,200%].It is found that the minimum lateral and longitudinal separa-tions can be reduced from 50 NM to be within the range of[23,31]NM,and 20 NM,respectively,for p∈[10%,200%],while the collision risk still meets the TLS standards.

Current cancer diagnosis procedure requires expert knowledge and is time-consuming,which raises the need to build an accurate diagnosis support system for lymphoma identification and classification.Many studies have shown promising results using Machine Learning and,recently,Deep Learning to detect malignancy in cancer cells.However,the diversity and complexity of the morphological structure of lymphoma make it a challenging classification problem.In literature,many attempts were made to classify up to four simple types of lymphoma.This paper presents an approach using a reliable model capable of diagnosing seven different categories of rare and aggressive lymphoma.These Lymphoma types are Classical Hodgkin Lymphoma,Nodular Lymphoma Predominant,burkitt Lymphoma,Follicular Lymphoma,Mantle Lymphoma,Large b-Cell Lymphoma,and T-Cell Lymphoma.Our proposed approach uses Residual Neural Networks,ResNet50,with a Transfer Learning for lymphoma’s detection and classification.The model used results are validated according to the performance evaluation metrics:Accuracy,precision,recall,F-score,and kappa score for the seven multi-classes.Our algorithms are tested,and the results are validated on 323 images of 224×224 pixels resolution.The results are promising and show that our used model can classify and predict the correct lymphoma subtype with an accuracy of 91.6%.

ObJECTIVE:Posttraumatic arthritis (PTA) may develop years after acetabular fracture, hindering joint function and causing significant chronic musculoskeletal pain. Given the delayed onset of PTA, few studies have assessed outcomes of delayed total hip arthroplasty (THA) in acetabular fracture patients. This study systematically reviewed the literature for outcomes of THA in patients with PTA and prior acetabular fracture.;METHODS:Pubmed, EMbASE, SCOPUS, and Cochrane library were searched for articles containing the keywords "acetabular", "fracture", "arthroplasty", and "post traumatic arthritis" published between 1995 and August 2017. Studies with less than 10 patients, less than 2 years of follow-up, conference abstracts, and non-English language articles were excluded. Data on patient demographics, surgical characteristics, and outcomes of delayed THA, including implant survival, complications, need for revision, and functional scores, was collected from eligible studies.;RESULTS:With 1830 studies were screened and data from 10 studies with 448 patients were included in this review. The median patient age on date of THA was 51.5 years, ranging from 19 to 90 years. The median time from fracture to THA was 37 months, with a range of 27-74 months. Mean follow-up times ranged from 4 to 20 years. The mean Harris hip scores (HHS) improved from 41.5 pre-operatively, to 87.6 post-operatively. The most prevalent postoperative complications were heterotopic ossification (28%-63%), implant loosening (1%-24%), and infection (0%-16%). The minimum 5-year survival of implants ranged from 70% to 100%. Revision rates ranged from 2% to 32%.;CONCLUSIONS:Despite the difficulties associated with performing THA in patients with PTA from previous acetabular fracture (including soft tissue scarring, existing hardware, and acetabular bone loss) and the relatively high complication rates, THA in patients with PTA following prior acetabular fracture leads to significant improvement in pain and function at 10-year follow-up. Approximate analytical bound-state solutions of the Dirac particle in the fields of attractive and repulsive Rosen–Morse （RM） potentials including the Coulomb-like tensor （CLT） potential are obtained for arbitrary spin–orbit quantum number κ. The Pekeris approximation is used to deal with the spin–orbit coupling terms κ（κ ± 1）r 2 . In the presence of exact spin and pseudospin （p-spin） symmetries, the energy eigenvalues and the corresponding normalized two-component wave functions are found by using the parametric generalization of the Nikiforov–Uvarov （NU） method. The numerical results show that the CLT interaction removes degeneracies between the spin and p-spin state doublets.

In this work degradation of Acid Red-18(AR-18)was examined in the hydrodynamic cavitation reactor.Orifice plates with different holes geometry are used to determine the optimum plate to carry out the degradation based on cavitation number.The obtained optimum orifice plate is used as a cavitating device on varying parameters like initial AR-18 concentrations,pH,temperatures,and operating pressures of the reactor.A photocatalyst(TiO2)was prepared by the sol-gel method and used in combination with H2O2 to intensify the degradation of AR-18.The obtained optimum condition of hydrodynamic cavitation was again used in the ultrasonic cavitation reactor for the comparison.Hydrodynamic cavitation(orifice)given the highest degradation as compared to Hydrodynamic cavitation(Venturi)and Ultrasonic Cavitation with and without the use of TiO2.At TiO2(300 mg/L)dose,88.1%,70.4%and 64.8%degradation is obtained in HC-O,HC-V and UC reactor at initial AR-18 concentration(15 ppm),pH(3),Operating temperature(35C),and H2O2(300 mg/L).Hence the use of an advanced oxidation process can be successfully used with hydrodynamic cavitation to intensify the degradation of Acid Red-18 under the controlled operating parameters.

We study the effects of the perpendicular magnetic and Aharonov-bohm （Ab） flux fields on the energy levels of a two-dimensional （2D） Klein Gordon （KG） particle subjected to an equal scalar and vector pseudo-harmonic oscillator （PHO）. We calculate the exact energy eigenvalues and normalized wave functions in terms of chemical potential param- eter, magnetic field strength, Ab flux field, and magnetic quantum number by means of the Nikiforov Uvarov （NU） method. The non-relativistic limit, PHO, and harmonic oscillator solutions in the existence and absence of external fields are also obtained.
