Wavefront-optimized surface retreatments of refractive error following previous laser refractive surgery: a retrospective study

Background:Retreatments are sometimes necessary to correct residual or induced refractive errors following refractive *** different combinations of primary treatment methods and retreatment techniques have been studied,however,few studies have investigated wavefront-optimized(WfO)technology for retreatment following primary refractive *** study aimed to report the outcomes of WfO photorefractive keratectomy(PRK)retreatments of refractive error following previous laser refractive surgery with PRK,laser in situ keratomileusis(LASIK),or laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy(LASEK).methods:We reviewed records of patients who underwent WfO PRK retreatments using the Allegretto Wave Eye-Q 400 Hz Excimer Laser System(Alcon Surgical)between January 2008 and April 2011 at Walter Reed Army medical Center and madigan Army medical *** were recorded in terms of uncorrected distance visual acuity(UDVA),manifest refraction spherical equivalent(mRSE),corrected distance visual acuity(CDVA),and complications at 1 month(m),3 m,and 6 m ***:Seventy-eight patients(120 eyes)underwent WfO PRK retreatment during the study *** surgery was surface ablation in 87 eyes(78 PRK,9 LASEK)and LASIK in 33 *** mean spherical equivalent before retreatment was−0.79±0.94 D(−3.00 to 1.88 D).UDVA was≥20/20 in 69 eyes(60.0%)at 1 m,54 eyes(71.1%)at 3 m,and 27 eyes(73.0%)at 6 m *** was within±0.50 D of emmetropia in 78 eyes(67.8%)at 1 m,59 eyes(77.6%)at 3 m,and 25 eyes(67.6%)at 6 m *** was maintained within±1 line of pre-op in 113 of 115 eyes(98.3%)at 1 m,74 of 76 eyes(97.4%)at 3 m,and 37 eyes(100%)at 6 m ***:Although follow-up was limited beyond 3 m,WfO PRK retreatments in patients with residual refractive error may be a safe and effective *** studies are necessary to determine the long-term safety and stability of outcomes.

Use of Essential Oils of the Genus Citrus as Biocidal Agents

In this study, the essential oils extracted from the peels of Citrus aurantifolia, Citrus limon and Citrus sinensis were chemically characterized and quantified. These essential oils and their standards limonene, citral and limonene + citral were evaluated (at concentrations ranging from 500 to 3.91 mL·mL-1) regarding their anti-trypanosome, antifungal and antibacterial activities. The chemical identification and quantification (by GC/fID and GC/mS) displayed the limonene as the major component of the three essential oils. It did not verified anti-trypanosome activity for all treatments. Regarding antimicrobial activity, the results were satisfactory against Gram-negative bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria. monocytogenes and Salmonella cholerasuis) and funghi (Aspergillus niger, A. flavus and A. carbonarius), except for the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which showed no inhibition for any treatment used.

A Statistical Study on Seismo-Ionospheric Anomalies of the Total Electron Content for the Period of 56 m≥6.0 Earthquakes Occurring in China During 1998—2012

This paper reports statistical results of Seismo-Ionospheric Anomalies(sias) of the Total Electron Content(TEC) in the Global Ionosphere map(GIm) associated with 56 m≥6.0 earthquakes in China during 1998—*** detect sia,a quartile-based(***-based) process is *** anomalies for the period of earthquakes without being led by magnetic storms about 10 days are further isolated and examined to confirm the SIP *** show that sia is the TEC significantly decrease in the afternoon period 2—9 days before the earthquakes in China,which is in a good agreement with the sia appearing before the 12 may 2008 m 8.0 Wenchuan earthquake.

AIm:To assess the prevalence and location of ad-vanced neoplasia in patients undergoing colonoscopy,and to compare the yield per ***:In a multicenter colonoscopy survey (n = 18 hospitals) in the Amsterdam area (Northern Holland),data of all colonoscopies performed during a three month period in 2005 were analyzed. The location and the histological features of all colonic neoplasia were recorded. The prevalence and the distribution ofadvanced colorectal neoplasia and differences in yield between indication clusters were evaluated. Advanced neoplasm was defi ned as adenoma > 10 mm in size,with > 25% villous features or with high-grade dyspla-sia or ***:A total of 4623 eligible patients underwent a total colonoscopy. The prevalence of advanced neo-plasia was 13%,with 281 (6%) adenocarcinomas and 342 (7%) advanced adenomas. Sixty-seven percent and 33% of advanced neoplasia were located in the distal and proximal colon,respectively. Of all patients with right-sided advanced neoplasia (n = 228),51% had a normal distal colon,whereas 27% had a syn-chronous distal adenoma. Ten percent of all colono-scopies were performed in asymptomatic patients,7% of whom had advanced neoplasia. In the respective procedure indication clusters,the prevalence of right-sided advanced neoplasia ranged from 11%-57%. CONCLUSION:One out of every 7-8 colonoscopies yielded an advanced colorectal neoplasm. Colonoscopy is warranted for the evaluation of both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients.

To be considered for resective (curative) surgery, most seizures have to been proved to arise exclusively from one area of the brain that is functionally sile nt. The drug resistance must be certain, and the patient must be strongly motiv ated to undergo surgery. Temporal lobectomy for drug resistant temporo me sia l epilepsy is now scientifically validated by a randomized controled trial. Hemi spherotomy, which consists in complete disconnection of one hemisphere, is a cur ative technique, which may be considered where there is a pre existing hemipleg iaassociated with a structural abnormality of the contralateral hemisphere. Ther efore, it is rarely performed in adult patients. Stereotactic radiosurgery is al so a curative technique, which shares most of its indications with those of temp oro mesial re sections. Callosotomy is a palliative technique, which consists in disconnecting the hemispheres, one from the other. It may be considered in in dividuals having frequent atonic seizures (drop attacks). multiple subpial trans ection involves transection of transverse fibers, leaving longitudinal fibers in tact. It may be performed if the epileptogenic focus is located in an eloquent b rain area. The complication rate of resective surgery is low. Controlateral moto r impairement is the main permanent complication related to cortical resection. It is a rare occurence (1 to 2 percent of cases) due to peroperative lesions of the sylvian vasculature, or of the anterior choroidal artery, or even of the mot or area. Postoperative hematomas, infections, or hydrocephalus may also occur in 2 to 6 percent of cases, depending on the authors. Some postoperative neuropsyc hological complications are reported in the literature, especially after surgery on the dominant side. Hydrocephalus and infection are the most frequent complic ations occuring after hemispherotomy (10 percent of cases). Technical challenges have obstructed the diagnosis and treatment of small inte stine disease. An innovative form of enteroscopy -the double balloon method -p ermits visualization of the complete small intestine, to-and-fro examination o f an area of interest, and biopsy and endoscopic procedures which are safer, fas ter, and less painful than earlier methods. from October 2003 to may 2004, a tot al of 10 patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding received 12 enteroscopi c examinations, 8 per oral and 4 per rectal examinations, while 2 patients recei ved per oral enteroscopy first and further per rectal procedures 2 days later. T wo cases with intestinal submucosal tumors were discovered by per oral enterosco py, one with a 5cm SmT with reddish mucosa at the jejunum and another with a 4cm SmT and surface ulceration, in which the biopsy showed GIST. Both patients rece ived an operation later. four patients were found to have intestinal angiodyspla sia in jejunum( per oral) and one in ileum(per rectal),and after local therapy b leeding stopped. multiple angiodysplasias were observed in a patient who was ope rated on for active bleeding from the ileum after Indian ink tattooing. The two patients who received per oral and per rectal procedures did not display definit e small intestinal lesions. All patients underwent the procedures satisfactorily without any complications, and the examination times varied from 90 to 360 min. Double balloon enteroscopy permits deep insertion of an endoscope into the smal l intestine without excessive stretching of the intestinal tract. This method ca n use either an oral or an anal approach. To-and-fro observation of almost the complete small intestine is possible, as are interventions.
