Pomegranate fruit and its derived products are rich sources of bioactive *** have many biological *** molasses(PM)is a thick,traditional Middle Eastern syrup used in many recipes for Lebanese and international *** is a highly nutritious product which makes it of great *** purpose of this study was to assess the phytochemical composition,antioxidant and anti-diabetic properties of homemade and commercial PM consumed in Lebanon using samples collected from households in rural areas(n=4)and the market(n=28).The objectives of this study were to determine their total phenolic content using the Follin-Ciocalteu method,their total flavonoid content using aluminum chloride method,their antioxidant activity using DPPH radical scavenging as well as ferrous ion chelating assays and their anti-diabetic activity usingα-amylase andα-glucosidase inhibitory activities with acarbose,a known anti-diabetic drug,used as the standard *** PM samples exhibited a higher antioxidant activity than commercial samples,with the most active homemade PM sample having IC_(50)values of 0.09 mg/mL(DPPH radical scavenging assay)and 46.78%ferrous ion chelating assay).Homemade PM samples also showed higher anti-diabetic activity than commercial samples,with the most active homemade PM sample having an IC_(50)values of 0.63 mg/mL(α-amylase inhibitory activity)and of 0.41 mg/mL(α-glucosidase inhibitory activity)and being almost as active as acarbose with both enzymes(1.5 times).Significant inverse strong/moderate correlations were observed between total phenolic content/total flavonoid content and the IC_(50)value of DPPH radical scavenging assay,indicating positive associations between total phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant *** addition,significant negative moderate correlations were observed between total phenolic/flavonoid contents andα-amylase inhibitory activity,indicating positive associations between total phenoli

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is associated with inflammation of one or more of serous membranes resulting in pleural, peritoneal and pericardial effusion. Massive effusion had rarely been reported in patients with SLE and responded well to immunosuppressive therapy. We reported a case of SLE with recurrent massive ascites as the main presenting complaint with review of the available literature.

Two simple, accurate, precise and economic spectrophotometric methods have been developed for simultaneous determination of Atorvastatin calcium (ATR) and Ezetimibe (EZ) in their bulk powder and pharmaceutical dosage form. Method (I) is based on dual wavelength analysis while method (II) is the mean centering of ratio spectra spectrophotometric (MCR) method. In method (I), two wavelengths were selected for each drug in such a way that the difference in absorbance was zero for the second drug. At wavelengths 226.6 and 244 nm EZ had equal absorbance values; therefore, these two wavelengths have been used to determine ATR; on a similar basis 228.6 and 262.8 nm were selected to determine EZ in their binary mixtures. In method II, the absorption spectra of both ATR and EZ with different concentrations were recorded over the range 200-350, divided by the spectrum of suitable divisor of both ATR and EZ and then the obtained ratio spectra were mean centered. The concentrations of active components were then determined from the calibration graphs obtained by measuring the amplitudes at 215-260 nm (peak to peak) for both ATR and EZ. Accuracy and precision of the developed methods have been tested; in addition recovery studies have been carried out in order to confirm their accuracy. On the other hand, selectivities of the methods were tested by application for determination of different synthetic mixtures containing different ratios of the studied drugs. The developed methods have been successfully used for determination of ATR and EZ in their combined dosage form and statistical comparison of the developed methods with the reported spectrophotometric one using F and Student’s t-tests showed no significant difference regarding both accuracy and precision.

Jordan is a small county located in the Middle East. Jordan has borders with Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iraq, and Israel (Figure 1). Jordan was established in 1921 and has very limited natural resources. Jordan’s current (2008) population is 6.5 million. The country has a total land area of 750,000 km2, about one third (92,300 km2) of which is dry land while the other two thirds (329,000 km2) are irrigated land. Jordan is considered as a water poor country due to unreliable and shortages in the supply of water sector. This makes it very difficult to meet the required and steadily increasing demand. Impact of climate change adds a layer to the uncertainty on the supply side of Jordan’s water portfolio. This paper addresses the water supply challenges that Jordan faces and what has been accomplished to improve supply and/or reduce demand. Many projects were undertaken or planned by the Jordanian government to increase the water supply and improve its reliability. Completing the proposed projects will result in Jordan meeting its water demand [1]. Otherwise, the Jordanian Government implement some or all the proposed short term solutions as presented in this paper.

Reconstruction of 2-Convex Polyominoes with Non-Empty Corners

This paper uses the theoretical material developed in a previous study by the authors in order to reconstruct a subclass of 2-convex polyominoes called where the upper left corner and the lower right corner of the polyomino contain each only one cell. The main idea is to control the shape of these polyominoes by using 32 types of geometries. Some modifications are made in the reconstruction algorithm of Chrobak and Dürr for HV-convex polyominoes in order to impose these geometries.

Purpose: Physical inactivity in Saudi Arabia is a growing challenge to public health. This study aimed to define the relationship between the physical activity level (PAL) and adult Saudi health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Methods: Participants of this study were 100 Saudi adult aged from 18 - 70 years. The 36-Item Short-Form Health Status Survey (SF-36) was used to measure the participant’s HRQoL. The SF-36 is comprised of 8 domains. The electronic version of the General Practice Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to categorize participants in terms of physical activity level into;inactive, moderately inactive, moderately active, and active. Descriptive and inferential statistical tests were used to treat the collected data. Results: Results showed that only 17% of the Saudi adults had active PAL. The PAL had significantly positive relationship with 4 domains of HRQoL including: physical functioning (P = 0.004), role limitations caused by physical health problems (P = 0.048), vitality (P = 0.009), and general health (P = 0.044). Results also confirmed that the younger the subject, the higher the PAL (P = 0.0001) and the better the HRQoL. This is true for all domains except the role limitations caused by emotional problems and emotional wellbeing. Conclusion: The poor physical activity level of adult Saudi negatively impacts their HRQoL.
