In response to widespread skepticism about the recent rise of“tech ethics”,many critics have called for legal reform *** contrast with the“ethics response”,critics consider the“lawfulness response”more capable of disciplining the excesses of the technology *** fact,both are simultaneously vulnerable to industry capture and capable of advancing a more democratic egalitarian agenda for the information *** ethics and law offer a terrain of contestation,rather than a predetermined set of commitments by which to achieve more democratic and egalitarian technological *** advancing this argument,the essay focuses on two misunderstandings common among proponents of the lawfulness ***,they misdiagnose the harms of the techlash as arising from law’s *** fact,law mediates the institutions that it enacts,the productive activities it encases,and the modes and myths of production it upholds and ***,this distinction between law’s absence and presence implies that once law’s presence is secured,the problems of the techlash will be *** concedes the legitimacy of the very regimes currently at issue in law’s own legitimacy crisis,and those that have presided over the *** twin moment of reckoning in tech and law thus poses a challenge to those looking to address discontent with technology with promises of future lawfulness.

Background Central America is one of the most diverse floristic provinces in the world,but comprehensive plant lists for the region are incomplete and need frequent *** geographic ranges of individual species are seldom *** detailed forest inventory plots of Panama thus lack a global geographic *** order to provide one,we assembled a thoroughly vetted checklist of all tree species of Panama,along with an estimate of each one’s range size based on published specimen *** 1)Panama has 3043 tree species in 141 families and 752 genera;57.6%were≥10 m tall and 16.9%were 3-5 m tall.2)The widest ranges were>1.5×107 km2,covering the entire neotropics and reaching>30∘latitude;12.4%of the species had ranges exceeding 107 *** median range was 6.9×105 km2.3)At the other extreme,16.2%of the species had a range<20,000 km2,a criterion suggesting endangered status.4)Range size increased with a tree species’height and varied significantly among families.5)Tree census plots,where we mapped and measured all individuals,captured 27.5%of the tree species,but a biased selection relative to range size;only 4.5%of the species in plots had ranges<20,000 *** Our checklist of the trees of Panama,based on rigorous criteria aimed at matching plot censuses,is 20%larger than *** recording species’maximum heights,we allow comparisons with other regions based on matching definitions,and the range sizes provide a quantitative basis for assessing extinction *** next goal is to merge population density from plot censuses to add rigor to predictions of extinction risk of poorly-studied tropical tree species.

Aljustrel mines were classified as having high environmental hazard due to their large tailings volume and high metal concentrations in waters and *** assess acid mine drainage impacted systems whose environmental conditions change quickly,the use of biological indicators with short generation time such as diatoms is *** study combined geochemical and diatom data,whose results were highlighted in 3 groups：Group 1,with low p H（1.9–5.1）and high metal/metalloid（Al,As,Cd,Co,Cu,Fe,Mn,Ni,Pb,Zn;0.65–1032 mg/L）and SO4（405–39124 mg/L）*** acidophilic species,Pinnularia aljustrelica,was perfectly adapted to the adverse conditions;in contrast,teratological forms of Eunotia exigua were found,showing that metal toxicity affected this *** low availability of metals/metalloids in sediments of this group indicates that metals/metalloids of the exchangeable fractions had been solubilized,which in fact enables metal/metalloid diatom uptake and consequently the occurrence of teratologies;Group 2,with sites of near neutral p H（5.0–6.8）and intermediate metal/metalloid（0.002–6 mg/L）and SO4（302–2179 mg/L）concentrations;this enabled the existence of typical species of uncontaminated streams（Brachysira neglectissima,Achnanthidium minutissimum）;Group 3,with samples from unimpacted sites,showing low metal/metalloid（0–0.8 mg/L）and SO4（10–315 mg/L）concentrations,high pH（7.0–8.4）and Cl contents（10–2119 mg/L）and the presence of brackish to marine species（Entomoneis paludosa）.For similar conditions of acidity,differences in diversity,abundance and teratologies of diatoms can be explained by the levels of metals/metalloids.

Background： The first three censuses of the 50-ha plot at Barro Colorado Island spanned an unusually harsh dry season during the 1983 El Nitro. By the early 1990s, we had documented increases in tree mortality, tree growth, and large population fluctuations of many species during the 1982-1985 census interval. At the time, we asserted that increasing drought frequency would greatly affect the forest. With the benefit of five more censuses at Barro Colorado from 1995-2015, we can now put the 1980 conditions in a longer perspective and test the hypothesis that increasing droughtiness has continued to change the forest. Methods： A 50-ha forest plot on Barro Colorado Island was censused eight times, in 1982 and every five years since 1985. All free-standing woody stems were measured, mapped, and identified in each census. Results： 1） The period 1982-1992 included several extreme dry seasons, not just 1983, but since then there have been few such droughts. 2） Dbh growth declined from a peak in the early 1980s to its lowest in the early 1990s. From 1995-2015 it increased slightly, but not returning to the initial peak. Nearly every species and all dbh categories followed the same pattern. 3） The elevated stand-wide mortality rate of large trees during the 1982-1985 drought has not returned, and most individual species showed the same pattern of elevated mortality in the 1980s followed by low and fairly stable mortality after 1990. 4） Sapling mortality declined after 198,5, but rose again in the late-90s, so the 1980s drought period no longer looks unusual. Mortality of individual species＇ saplings fluctuated erratically, including cases where mortality during the drought was lower than after. 5） Population sizes of individual species fluctuated in all possible directions. Some species declined precipitously during the drought, then recovered, but others did not recover. Other species increased in abundance during the drought. Throughout evolution, plants have evolved sophisticated adaptive responses that allow them to grow with a limited supply of phos-phate, the preferential form in which the essential macronutrient phosphorus is absorbed by plants. Most of these responses are aimed to increase phosphate availability and acquisition through the roots, to optimize its usage in metabolic processes, and to protect plants from the deleterious effects of phosphate deficiency stress. Regulation of these adaptive responses requires fine percep- tion of the external and internal phosphate levels, and a complex signal transduction pathway that integrates information on the phosphate status at the whole-plant scale. The molecular mecha-nisms that participate in phosphate homeostasis include transcriptional control of gene expression, RNA silencing mediated by microRNAs, regulatory non-coding RNAs of miRNA activity, phosphate transporter trafficking, and post-translational modification of proteins, such as phosphorylation, sumoylation and ubiquitination. Such a varied regulatory repertoire reflects the complexity intrinsic to phosphate surveying and signaling pathways. Here, we describe these regulatory mechanisms, emphasizing the increasing importance of ubiquitination in the control of phosphate starvation responses.

The hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae Annand is an invasive insect that frequently causes hemlock （Tsuga spp.） mortality in the eastern United States. Studies have shown that once healthy hemlocks become infested by the adelgid, nutrients are depleted from the tree, leading to both tree decline and a reduction of the adelgid population. Since A. tsugae is dependent on hemlock for nutrients, feeding on trees in poor health may affect the ability of the insect to obtain necessary nutrients and may consequently affect their physiological and population health. Trees were categorized as lightly or moderately impacted by A. tsugae based on quantitative and qualitative tree health measurements. Population health ofA. tsugae on each tree was determined by measuring insect density and peak mean fecundity; A. tsugae physiological health was determined by measuring insect biomass, total carbon, carbohydrate, total nitrogen, and amino nitrogen levels. Adelges tsugae from moderately impacted trees exhibited significantly greater fecundity than from lightly impacted trees. However, A. tsugae from lightly impacted hemlocks contained significantly greater levels of carbohydrates, total nitrogen, and amino nitrogen. While the results of the physiological analysis generally support our hypothesis that A. tsugae on lightly impacted trees are healthier than those on moderately impacted trees, this was not reflected in the population health measurements. Adelges tsugae egg health in response to tree health should be verified. This study provides the first examination of A. tsugae physiological health in relation to standard A. tsugae population health measures on hemlocks of different health levels.
