The multistage triaxial compression test was mainly utilized in this research to investigate the degradation in the strength of swelling shale under different wetting *** samples were tested in four different conditions:(1)under their natural moisture content denoted as intact,and after soaking in,(2)water,(3)polymer solution,and(4)bentonite solution,*** experimental results showed that a considerable decrease in the shale’s strength was noted after soaking in water and the lubricant fluids(LFs).The polymer solution caused the least decrease in the strength compared to other *** envelopes of the tested shale were constructed for intact and soaked *** envelopes showed fair agreement between the single stage and the multistage triaxial compression test results,indicating suitability of the multistage triaxial compression test for the tested swelling shale.

Effects of time-dependent deformation（TDD） on a tunnel constructed using the micro-tunneling technique in Queenston shale（Qs） are investigated employing the finite element method. The TDD and strength parameters of the Qs were measured from tests conducted on Qs specimens soaked in water and lubricant fluids（LFs） used in micro-tunneling such as bentonite and polymer solutions. The numerical model was verified using the results of TDD tests performed on Qs samples, field measurements of some documented projects, and the closed-form solutions to circular tunnels in swelling rock. The verified model was then employed to conduct a parametric study considering important micro-tunneling design parameters, such as depth and diameter of the tunnel, in situ stress ratio（K;）, and the time lapse prior to replacing LFs with permanent cement grout around the tunnel. It was revealed that the time lapse plays a vital role in controlling deformations and associated stresses developed in the tunnel *** critical case of a pipe or tunnel in which the maximum tensile stress develops at its springline occurs when it is constructed at shallow depths in the Qs layer. The results of the parametric study were used to suggest recommendations for the construction of tunnels in Qs employing micro-tunneling.

It consists of a retrospective study with twenty-two individuals diagnosed with DRC: fourteen HD and eight CAPD, followed up in the dialysis center of Antonio Pedro University Hospital (HUAP) of Fluminense Federal University (UFF), between 2015 and 2017. Fifteen healthy control (HC) subjects were included, without diagnosed CKD. Patients with HIV positive, hepatitis A, B, and C, pregnant, cancer, smokers, alcoholics and those exposed to X-rays in the last 3 months, were excluded. Objectives: As oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction may be linked to the higher prevalence of CVD in CKD patients, we measured the activities of the antioxidants enzymes: sOD and GPx and total NO levels in the plasma and serum of end-stage CKD patients undergoing dialysis therapy, comparing with the HC group. Methods: Quantification of NO levels was performed by fluorometric kit, while activities of sOD and GPx were determined using kinetic methods. Results: We found higher plasma sOD activity in HD (8.58 U/ml) and CAPD (10.14 U/ml), compared to C (3.73 U/ml) group, while GPx activity was decreased in HD (115.38 nmol/h/ml) and CAPD (122.76 nmol/h/ml) groups compared to HC group (275.83 nmol/h/ml). Total serum NO concentration was decreased in HD (14.09 pmol/μl) and CAPD (10.26 pmol/μl), compared to non-CKD patients (49.65 pmol/μl). Conclusion: Decreased total serum NO and GPx activities may lead to endothelial dysfunction and consequently a higher prevalence of CVD in CKD patients.

The present study investigated the wax deposition tendencies of a light Malaysian crude oil（42.4° API）, and the wax inhibiting potential of some surfactants and their blends with nanoparticles. With the knowledge that the majority of the wax inhibition research revolved around polymeric wax inhibitors, which cause environmental issues, we highlighted the potential of surfactants and their blend with siO2 nanoparticles as wax deposition inhibitors. Different surfactants including oil-based, silane-based, Gemini and bio-surfactants were considered as primary surfactants. The primary surfactants and their respective blends at a concentration of 400 ppm were screened as wax inhibitor candidates using cold finger apparatus. The screening results showed a significant influence on the paraffin inhibition efficiency on wax deposition by using 400 ppm of silane-based surfactant, which decreased the wax deposition up to 53.9% as compared to that of the untreated crude oil. The inhibition efficiency among the silane-based surfactant（highest） and bio-surfactant（lowest）revealed an appreciable difference up to 36.5%. Furthermore, the wax from the treated sample was found to deposit in a thin gel-like form, which adhered inadequately to the surface of the cold finger. A further investigation by blending the 400 ppm silane-based surfactant with a 400 ppm siO2 nanoparticle suspension in a load ratio of 3：1 found that the wax inhibition decreased up to 81% as compared to the scenario when they were not added. However, we have shown that the synergy between the silane-based surfactant and the nanoparticles is influenced by the concentration and load ratio of surfactant and nanoparticles, residence time, differential temperature and rotation rate.

The paper presents a robust parallel distributed compensation （PDC） fuzzy controller for a nonlinear and certain system in continuous time described by the Tal^gi-sugeno （T-s） fuzzy model. This controller is based on a new type of time-varying fuzzy sets （TVFs）. These fuzzy sets are characterized by displacement of the kernels to the right or left of the universe of discourse, and they are directed by a well-defined criterion. In this work, we only focused on the movement of midpoint of the universe. The movements of this midpoint are optimized by particle swarm optimization （PsO） approach.

In Zanzibar, from the start of the pandemic in March 2020 to the time of sampling in December 2020, sARs-CoV-2 seroprevalence data was limited. We conducted a seroprevalence study to evaluate the magnitude of sARs-CoV-2 exposure among healthcare workers, school children, and people who attended general markets in Zanzibar. The objectives of the study were to analyse the total antibodies from selected higher-risk population groups in order to determine magnitude in sARs CoV-2 exposure. Blood samples were collected from eligible and consented participants (adults and children), and their serum was analyzed for total antibodies against sARs-CoV-2 using ELIsA. A questionnaire was used to collect participants’ demographic and clinical data. The overall sARs-CoV-2 seroprevalence across all age groups was 33%, and a higher seroprevalence was observed in the 40 - 49 years’ age group relative to other ages as well as in those who attended markets. A runny nose (18.8% of participants) was the most frequently reported sARs-CoV-2 infection-related symptom. Multivariable analysis showed significantly higher odds of infection in people living in urban districts. The findings provide insight into sARs-CoV-2 infection among school children, health workers, and people who attended markets in Zanzibar in the early stages of the pandemic. Exposure in these groups might have been influenced by infection and prevention strategies taken by the government, as well as shopping behavior, school overcrowding, and population density in urban settings. The study had methodological limitations, including cross-sectional design. Further, well-designed, longitudinal studies are recommended to understand exposure and transmission at a population level.
