Determining the edge effect of pine processionary moth (thaumetopoea pityocampa) in its horizontal distribution in the stand

Pine processionary moth is one of the most important forest pests in the Mediterranean Basin. there is need to explore its distribution behaviour to undertake effective control and determine the edge effect of its horizontal distribution in the stand. Five trial sites damaged by the insect were selected and traps installed in all trees in the sites. the number of nests and larvae was counted and diameter increment cores were taken. the distance to the edge of the stand revealed that there was no statistical difference in the number of nests and larvae up to 25 m while there was a statistically significant difference(0.5%)at [25 m. there was a 2-fold difference in the density of nests between 0 and 25 m and [25 meters, and a 3.8-fold difference in the number of larvae. the effect of pine processionary moth on tree diameter was not significant between trees at the edge of the stand and those in the stand.

A group of variously colored proteins belonging to the green fAuorescent protein(GFP)family are responsible for coloring coral *** of the Great Barrier Reef were studied with the custom-built fiber laser fluorescence *** analysis showed that most of the excarmined corals contained multiple fuorescent peaks ranging from 470 to *** obser-vation was attributed to the presence of multiple genes of GFP-like proteins in a single coral,as well as by the photo-induced post-translational modifcations of certain GFP-like *** isolated a novel photo-convertible fuorescent protein(FP)from one of the tested ***:propose that two processes may explain the observed diversity of the fuorescent spectra in corals:(1)dark post-translational modifcation(maturation),and(2)color photo-conversion of certain maturated proteins in response to sunlight.

Data on the presence of organophosphate esters(OPEs)in drinking water and its significance as a pathway of exposure are *** this study,we measure for the first time,concentrations of eight OPEs in 50 UK drinking water *** mean concentrations of ∑8OPEs were:6.4 and 11 ng/L in bottled(n=25)and tap water samples(n=25),*** of ∑8OPEs in tap water(mean:11 ng/L)exceed significantly those in bottled water(mean:6.4 ng/L)(p˂0.01).Moreover,UK tap water is more contaminated with chlorinated,aryl-,and alkyl-OPEs than bottled *** predominant OPEs detected were:tris(butoxyethyl)phosphate(tBOEP),tris(2-chloroethyl)phosphate(tCEP),and tris(2-chloroisopropyl)phosphate(tCIPP)with arithmetic mean concentrations in the two water sample types ranging between(3.5e3.8 ng/L),(0.60-3.0 ng/L),and(1.02-2.9 ng/L),*** daily intakes(EDIs)(mean and high-end exposure)via drinking water for different sectors of the UK population were:infants(0.93 and 6.4 ng/kg bw/day)˃toddlers(0.46 and 3.1 ng/kg bw/day)˃children(0.35 and 2.3 ng/kg bw/day)˃adults(0.28 and 2.1 ng/kg bw/day).Based on these data,exposure to ∑8OPEs via drinking water is much lower than via:food,indoor dust ingestion,inhalation,and dermal uptake for adults and ***,our EDIs were lower than relevant reference dose(RfD)***,combining our drinking water ingestion data with exposure via other pathways revealed overall exposure to 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate(EHDPP)and tCIPP to approach health-based limit values for UK toddlers under a high-end exposure scenario.

Geochemistry of termite Hills as a tool for Geochemical Exploration of Glass Sand in the Iraqi Western Desert

Sand glass deposits was located in the mid of the Western Desert of Iraq. It is situated within Rutba Formation (Ceno-manian). Ancient traditional mining method is still used in exploitation the unconsolidated white glass sand from glass sand quarry. the overburden thickness ranges from 2 to 4 m in average. termite hills were observed around the glass sand quarry extending far from the quarry area. termites could burrows down and penetrate the sand glass bringing it up to the surface. the depth of penetration reaches more than 35 m. the field observation of the white color of termite hills which are built up by sand glass gave a good indicator for the hidden subsurface deposit and it appears to be a surface signature for finding glass sand directly under the termite hills. the scattered white hills of glass sand on the surface with high content of SiO2, concordant Zr/Hf and th/U ratios and heavy mineral distribution in both of quarry and termite hills provide a strong evidence of that those termite hills could be an effective tool for exploring subsurface hidden glass sand up to 35 m depth.

the synthesis of boronic-imine structured compounds and identification of their anticancer, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities

Boronic acid compounds with different substituted groups were handled to synthesize various ligands encoded as B1, B2, B3, B4, BS, B6, B7 and BS. B5 and B7 were tested for the cytotoxic activity against the prostate cancer cells and it was found that the cell viability of cancer cells was decreased while most of the healthy cells could still be viable. 5 μM solutions of B5 and B7 decreased the cell viability to 33% and 44%; whereas healthy cells were 71% and 95%, respectively, after treatment. Antimicrobial properties were explored against the bacterial and fungal microorganisms with B1, B5 and BZ the inhibition zones were evaluated for all boronic structures, and the growth inhibition zones were determined in a range of 7-13 mm diameter for different microorganism species. Staphylococcus aureus was the common micro- organism that three boronic compounds with imine ligands showed the activity. Antioxidant features of B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, B7 and B8 were investigated by different processes such as Beta-carotene bleaching （BCB）, 2,2-diphenyl picryl hydrazyl （DPPH）, 2,2″-azino-bis（ 3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid）（ABtS） and CUPric reducing antioxidant capacity （CLIPRAC） methods. Significant antioxidant activity was achieved by the phenyl boronic based ligands and these compounds demonstrated as much activity as standards （α-toc and BHt）. In addition, all structures were applied properly without any decomposition during the experiments. they were rather stable both in aqueous media and solid state.

A series of N-substituted （Z）-3-（（2-benzyl）-4-oxopent-2-yl）pyrrole-2,5-diones were synthesized and characterized. the compounds were synthesized from dimethyl-2-（（Z）-2-（benzylamino）-4-oxopent-2-en-3-yl） fumarate （9） and dimethyl acetylenedi-carboxylate followed by reaction with some amines in refluxing ethanol. the identification of the compounds were based on spectroscopic analysis such as 1R （infrared）, UV （ultraviolet）, ^1H-NMR （nuclear magnetic resonance） and the microanalysis of the elements （CHN （microanalysis）） data.

In this letter we propose analytical evaluation method for the electron density and the energy density in multi-layered high electron mobility transistors (HEMts). the algorithm is used to simulate the variation of the electron density and the energy density against temperature of hetero-junction AlGaN/GaN. the proposed procedure guaranties the reliable application of the contribution of multi-layered HEMts structure. In conclusion, the obtained results are estimated and discussed.

tyle="text-align:justify;"> Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a growing health problem, characterized by insulin resistance progressing to beta cell dysfunction and insulin deficiency, most of these patients will need intensification of treatment and initiation of insulin to delay or prevent diabetic complications. Glycemic control is the most important aspect of management, and in reducing morbidity and mortality of the diseases. Control of plasma glucose in patients with diabetes can be assessed by HbA1c, FPG, PPG, but still HbA1c% remains the gold standard for assessment of glycemic control and follow up of diabetic patients. The aim of this study is to assess HbA1c% in patients on oral anti-diabetic drugs, with poor glycemic control before and after adding basal insulin, with titration of the dose of insulin depending on fasting blood sugar. 82 patients with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes (43.9% male, 56.1% female), with HbA1c more than 9%, on two types of oral diabetic medication or more, were started on basal insulin (glargine, lantus) and followed for three to six months. Overall 82 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were included in the study. The mean age of the study population was 58.4 years, the mean duration of the disease range was 13.4 years. All patients with HbA1c more than 9%, without organ failure, were included in the study. The mean HbA1c overall had decreased from mean of 11.15% before starting basal insulin to the mean of 8.43% within 3 to 6 month, after initiating basal insulin, this difference was significant at p ïve type 2 diabetic patients resulted in significant improvement of glycemic control, with improved HbA1c level,

Background: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) are well known and widely used assessment tool. they can be used to measure the different levels of educational outcomes: knowledge, understanding, judgment and problem solving. traditional MCQs (stand-alone MCQs) often are used as a tool for facts recall. Advantages of using Scenario-based questions (SBQs) include more focus on learning objectives and ability to assess higher levels of learning. Shifting to scenario-based questions can increase the level of difficulty and measure higher levels of cognition. Purpose: this study explores the current knowledge and overall awareness of the undergraduate teaching staff about the use and difficulties of scenario-based single-best answer, multiple-choice questions (SB-SBA-MCQs) in assessments of the basic medical sciences. Method: We used an e-Likert scale questionnaire to explore this issue. the questionnaire covered the current knowledge, experience of staff in writing (SB-SBA-MCQs), courses or postgraduate degrees they attended and difficulties they face or anticipate in writing (SB-SBA-MCQs). Results: the majority (86%) are familiar with courses or workshops related to MCQs writing and assessment in general, a small minority have not attended any. the majority (86%) had some experience in writing MCQs. Only, a small percentage have not tried writing this type of MCQs. Nearly 60% think it takes time to construct, the majority (96%) of those researched are in support of shifting to scenario-based MCQs in basic medical sciences. Conclusion: the study has shown most of the teachers of basic medical sciences are aware of and with good knowledge in (SB-SBA-MCQs). It also highlighted the importance and need for regular training courses and workshops on the same.
