Objective:To investigate the role of water-soluble extract of Salvia fruticosa(Creek sage)(***) leaves in reducing both intrinsic cellular and H_2O_2-induced DNA oxidation in cultured human embryonic kidney 293 *** to the Eastern-Mediterranean basin,is widely used as a medicinal herb for treatment of various ***:Dried leaves of *** were extracted in phosphate buffer saline and purified using both vacuum and high pressure *** mL of the preparation contained(7.1±1.0)mg of ***-293 cells were incubated in one set with *** extract in the presence of 0.1 mmol/L H_2O_2,and in the other set with the addition of the extract *** DNA oxidation was measured using fluorescence upon fluorescein isothiocyanate derivarization of 8-oxoguanine *** fluorescence was measured using flow cytometry ***:Cells incubated 3 h with 150μL extract and exposed to 0.1 mmol/L H_2O_2 showed lower intensity of fluorescence,and thus lower DNA ***,cells incubated 3 h with 100μ*** the extract showed lower intensity of fluorescence,and thus lower intrinsic cellular DNA oxidation compared to control(without ***).Conchisions:The results from this study suggest that the water-soluble extract of *** leaves protects against both H_2O_2-induced and intrinsic cellular DNA oxidation in human embryonic kidney 293 cells.

Since its initial description, the pathogenesis of the columnar-lined esophagus （CLE） has been surrounded by many controversies. The first controversy is related to the existence of the condition itself. The second controversy centers on whether the CLE is a congenital or an acquired condition. In this article, we review the congenital and acquired theories of development of CLE and discuss the various factors in acquisition of CLE. The bulk of evidence in the literature suggests that CLE is an acquired condition.

AIM： To determine the risk factors for the development of esophageal adenocarcinoma in these patients with columnar-lined esophagus （CLE）. METHODS： Data collected retrospectively on 597 consecutive patients diagnosed at endoscopy and histology to have CLE at Leeds General Infirmary between 1984 and 1995 were analyzed. Factors evaluated included age, sex, length of columnar segment, smoking, and drinking habits, history of non-steroidal ingestion, presence of endoscopic esophagitis, ulceration or benign strictures and presence of Helicobacter pylori in esophageal biopsies. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify risk factors for the development of adenocarcinoma. RESULTS： Forty-four patients presented or developed esophageal adenocarcinoma during follow-up. Independent risk factors for the development of adenocarcinoma in palJents with CLE were males （OR 5.12, 95%CI 2.04-12.84, P = 0.0005）, and benign esophageal stricture （OR 4.37, 95%CI 2.02-9.45, P = 0.0002）. Male subjects and patients who developed benign esophageal stricture constituted 86% （n = 38） of all patients who presented or developed esophageal adenocarcinoma. The presence of esophagitis was associated with a significant reduction in the development of esophageal carcinoma （OR 0.28, 95%CI 0.13-0.57, P = 0.0006）. No other clinical characteristics differentiate between the non-malignant and malignant group. CONCLUSION： In patients with CLE, endoscopic surveillance for the early detection of adenocarcinoma may be restricted to male subjects, as well as patients who develop benign esophageal strictures.

Background:Diabetes and hypertension are two of the commonest diseases in the *** they unfavorably affect people of different age groups,they have become a cause of concern and must be predicted and diagnosed well in ***:This research aims to determine the effectiveness of artificial neural networks(ANNs)in predicting diabetes and blood pressure diseases and to point out the factors which have a high impact on these ***:This work used two online datasets which consist of data collected from 768 *** applied neural network algorithms to predict if the individuals have those two diseases based on some *** prediction is based on five factors:age,weight,fat-ratio,glucose,and insulin,while blood pressure prediction is based on six factors:age,weight,fat-ratio,blood pressure,alcohol,and ***:A model based on the Multi-Layer Perceptron Neural Network(MLP)was *** inputs of the network were the factors for each disease,while the output was the prediction of the disease’s *** model performance was compared with other classifiers such as Support Vector Machine(SVM)and K-Nearest Neighbors(KNN).We used performance metrics measures to assess the accuracy and performance of ***,a tool was implemented to help diagnose the diseases and to understand the ***:The model predicted the two diseases with correct classification rate(CCR)of 77.6%for diabetes and 68.7%for *** results indicate that MLP correctly predicts the probability of being diseased or not,and the performance can be significantly increased compared with both SVM and *** shows MLPs effectiveness in early disease prediction.

Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Logic System for Heavy Metal Sorption in Aquatic Environments

In this paper, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system ANFIS is used to assess conditions required for aquatic systems to serve as a sink for metal removal;it is used to generate information on the behavior of heavy metals (mercury) in water in relation to its uptake by bio-species (e.g. bacteria, fungi, algae, etc.) and adsorption to sediments. The approach of this research entails training fuzzy inference system by neural networks. The process is useful when there is interrelation between variables and no enough experience about mercury behavior, furthermore it is easy and fast process. Experimental work on mercury removal in wetlands for specific environmental conditions was previously conducted in bench scale at Concordia University laboratories. Fuzzy inference system FIS is constructed comprising knowledge base (i.e. premises and conclusions), fuzzy sets, and fuzzy rules. Knowledge base and rules are adapted and trained by neural networks, and then tested. ANFIS simulates and predicts mercury speciation for biological uptake and mercury adsorption to sediments. Modeling of mercury bioavailability for bio-species and adsorption to sediments shows strong correlation of more than 98% between simulation results and experimental data. The fuzzy models obtained are used to simulate and forecast further information on mercury partitioning to species and sediments. The findings of this research give information about metal removal by aquatic systems and their efficiency.

Mineralogical Studies on Some Selected Semi-Precious Stones from Northeast Jordan

A semi-precious stone is known as a gem or gemstone (also a jewel, a gem, a precious stone), which is a portion of mineral in refined and cut form that could be used to create a jewelry or other embellishments. A gem also can be defined as any mineral that is highly prized for its beauty, durability, and rarity, is used for personal adornment and has been enhanced in some manner by altering its shape usually by cutting and polishing. Semi-precious stones occurred as xenolithes are widespread in Jordan within different source of rocks. High grade of copper as malachite and chrysocolla and plancheite?is?suitable for gemstone manufacture found in Finan area. High purity of garnet can be found in metamorphic rocks in Wadi Araba area, whereas xenoliths of pyroxene, olivine and spinel-perioditite and garnet are wide spread in basalt and pyroclastic materials in northeast Jordan. The studied semi-precious stones are part of the Miocene alkali basaltic rocks?that covered the northeastern part of Jordan within Harrat Al-Shaam?Basaltic Super Group Plateau concentrated mainly in volcanic centers and volcaniclastic materials of Aritian, Hassan, Ufiyahim?and Bishriyya formations. Some of these xenoliths and xenocrysts can be considered as semi-precious stones. This study is focused on characterization of petrography, mineralogy and geochemistry of these semi-precious stones like olivine, pyroxene and garnet xenoliths that have been collected from selected areas in northeast Jordan. The samples were analyzed by polarizing microscope, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Cutting and polishing tests have shown that some of the studied xenoliths are suitable for manufacturing attractively colored gemstones and could be considered as semi-precious stones. Due to the importance of the inorganic materials removal from wastewater, experimental and analytical study to the concentration change with time of these materials became essential. In this work, experimental analyses were performed to investigate the concentration changes of inorganic compounds during stages of activated sludge wastewater treatment plants at different sites in Jordan. The aim of this research is to examine the performance of the plants in treating pollutants and inorganic materials, and verify the quantitative and qualitative changes with time. Samples from the treatment stages were monthly taken and analyzed in the laboratory along a period of one year. The concentration changes of the inorganic solids in wastewater passing through treatment stages and aeration tank were recorded. Results show that the conventional treatment of the wastewater within different conditions in the year is not effective to decrease the concentrations of the inorganic compounds. Based on these results, we recommend adding tertiary advanced treatment unit in order to get acceptable water quality allowable to be reused for different purposes.

Production of Bio-Oil from Pyrolysis of Olive Biomass with/without Catalyst

In this study olive biomass was pyrolysis in a 400 cm3 stainless steel reactor. It was externally heated by an electrical furnace in which the temperature is measured by a thermocouple inserted into the bed. The effect of the catalyst ratio to the biomass (5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 30% and 40%) on the pyrolysis yield was investigated and compared with the uncatalyzed pyrolysis yield product. The bio-oil products yield from the pyrolysis process was found to increase as the catalyst ratio increased. The bio-oil yield from the olive oil-cake, which was 36.1% without the catalyst, reached the maximum value of 39.3% on using activated catalyst at 10% by weight. The gas products yield was found to increase upon using catalyst compared to the non-catalytic pyrolysis. The reduction in the bio-oil yield product was accompanied with a significant reduction in the oxygen content. The pyrolysis oil was examined using chromatographic analysis techniques. The chemical characterization showed that the bio-oil obtained from olive oil cake might be potentially valuable as a fuel and chemical feedstock.
