Water use efficiency and yield of winter wheat under different irrigation regimes in a semi-arid region

In irrigation schemes under rotational water supply in semiarid region, the water allocation and irrigation scheduling are often based on a fixed-area proportionate water depth with every irrigation cycle irrespective of crops and their growth stages, for an equitable water supply. An experiment was conducted during the 2004- 2005 season in Haouz irrigated area in Morocco, which objective was i) to evaluate the effects of the surface irrigation scheduling method (existing rule) adopted by the irrigation agency on winter wheat production compared to a full irrigation method and ii) to evaluate drip irrigation versus surface irrigation impacts on water saving and yield of winter wheat. The methodology was based on the FAO-56 dual approach for the surface irrigation scheduling. Ground measurements of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) were used to derive the basal crop coefficient and the vegetation fraction cover. The simple FAO-56 approach was used for drip irrigation scheduling. For surface irrigation, the existing rule approach resulted in yield and WUE reductions of 22% and 15%, respectively, compared with the optimized irrigation scheduling proposed by the FAO-56 for full irrigation treatment. This revealed the negative effects of the irrigation schedules adopted in irrigation schemes under rotational water supply on crops productivity. It was also demon-strated that drip irrigation applied to wheat was more efficient with 20% of water saving in comparison with surface irrigation (full irrigation treatment). Drip irrigation gives also higher wheat yield compared to surface irrigation (+28% and +52% for full irrigation and existing rule treatments respectively). The same improvement was observed for water use efficiency (+24 and +59% respectively).

High moisture content wheat kernels are subject to elevated respiration rates due to enzyme activity and mould growth that reduce the dry grain and may produce suffi-cient energy which may be harmful to wheat *** aeration provides a powerful nonchemical stored grain insect ***,aeration is a suitable and economical device to overcome this *** moisture management is vital to prevent spoilage in stored *** objective of this study is to investigate the influence of using low relative humidity(RH)aeration on the wheat moisture *** numerical investigation based on heat and mass balances is developed and used to simulate the evolution of grain temperature and moisture under various air RH in a wheat storage *** show that the dehumidification of blown air had greater potential for decreasing RH of interstitial air and wheat moisture at 30◦C temperature and RH of 40%,50%and 60%.

Concordance of Her-2/Neu over Expression with Steroid Receptor Status in Female Breast Cancers

Her-2/neu over expression is associated with increased tumor aggressiveness, increased rates of recurrence, and increased mortality in node positive patients. It is amplified and/or over expressed in approximately 30% of female breast cancers. This study was to detect the relation between Her-2/neu over expression and steroid hormone receptor status. It was conducted at Cairo and Bani Suif university hospitals between February 2012 to February 2014. Her-2/neu over expression was found to be positive in thirteen patients (41%) out of the thirty two patients included in the study, more positive (52%) Her-2/neu was found among estrogen receptor (er) positive patients, on the other hand, only 18% positive Her-2/neu was detected among er negative patients. This difference was statistically significant (P erone receptors (PR) and Her-2/neu with statistically significant difference also (P = 0.02). Conclusion: Her-2/neu over expression is strongly related to er and PR, this was more evident in negative steroid receptors status. The failure of treatment in positive steroid receptors could be explained by Her-2/neu positivity.

Background.-Studies on the infectious complications postengrafment in pediatr ic stem cell transplantation patients are rare. The aim of this study was to ass ess the incidence, types, outcome and factors affecting late infections. Patient s and methods. -A single-institution retrospective analysis was done of infect ions recorded in the first year following engrafment in children who underwent a utologous stem cell transplantation for solid tumors from January 1991 to Decemb er 2000. A systematic antimicrobial chemoprophylaxis of TMP/SMX was administered . Patients who were at high risk for varicellazona virus infection received prop hylactic acyclovir. Results. -Eighty-four assessable patients were enrolled. F ifty-four patients (64%) underwent autologous peripheral blood stem cell trans plantation and 30 patients (36%) underwent bone marrow transplantation. Forty- nine episodes of infections were documented in 39 patients(46%) of whom 27 pati ents (32%) developed infections after the first 100 days post transplantation. Bacterial septicemia occurred in nine patients of whom four patients had a cathe ter-related septicemia. Twelve patients (14%) developed localized herpes zoste r infection. Local fungal infection occurred in five patients. Infection-relate d death occurred in one patient with non-documented pneumonitis. Univariable an alysis showed a correlation between the CD34+cell dose er transplantation where at high risk for septicemia (P =0.007)-. Multivariate ana lysis showed that a history of varicella or pretransplant varicella-zona positi vity was the only significant factor for development zoster infection (P =0.01).
