Typhoon Risk Perception: A Case Study of Typhoon Lekima in China

The typhoon is one major threat to human societies and natural ecosystems, and its risk perception is crucial for contextualizing and managing disaster risks in different social settings. Social media data are a new data source for studying risk perception, because such data are timely, widely distributed, and sensitive to emergencies.However, few studies have focused on crowd sensitivity variation in social media data-based typhoon risk perception. Based on the regional disaster system theory, a framework of analysis for crowd risk perception was established to explore the feasibility of using social media data for typhoon risk perception analysis and crowd sensitivity variation. The goal was to quantitatively analyze the impact of hazard intensity and social and geographical environments on risk perception and its variation among population groups. Taking the Sina Weibo data during Typhoon Lekima of 2019 as an example, we found that:(1)Typhoon Lekima-related Weibo public attention changed in accordance with the evolution of the typhoon track and the number of Weibo posts shows a significantly positive correlation with disaster losses, while socioeconomic factors,including population, gross domestic product, and land area, are not explanatory factors of the spatial distribution of disaster-related Weibo posts;(2) Females, nonlocals with travel plans, and people living in areas with high hazard intensity, low elevation, or near waterbodies affected by Lekima paid more attention to the typhoon disaster;and(3)Descriptions of rainfall intensity by females are closer to the meteorological observation data.

Improved Energy Management Strategy for Prosumer Buildings with Renewable Energy Sources and Battery Energy Storage Systems

The concept of utilizing microgrids(MGs)to convert buildings into prosumers is gaining massive popularity because of its economic and environmental benefits.These pro-sumer buildings consist of renewable energy sources and usually install battery energy storage systems(BESSs)to deal with the uncertain nature of renewable energy sources.However,because of the high capital investment of BESS and the limitation of available energy,there is a need for an effective energy management strategy for prosumer buildings that maximizes the profit of building owner and increases the operating life span of BESS.In this regard,this paper proposes an improved energy management strategy(IEMS)for the prosumer building to minimize the operating cost of MG and degradation factor of BESS.Moreover,to estimate the practical operating life span of BESS,this paper utilizes a non-linear battery degradation model.In addition,a flexible load shifting(FLS)scheme is also developed and integrated into the proposed strategy to further improve its performance.The proposed strategy is tested for the real-time annual data of a grid-tied solar photovoltaic(PV)and BESS-powered AC-DC hybrid MG installed at a commercial building.Moreover,the scenario reduction technique is used to handle the uncertainty associated with generation and load demand.To validate the performance of the proposed strategy,the results of IEMS are compared with the well-established energy management strategies.The simulation results verify that the proposed strategy substantially increases the profit of the building owner and operating life span of BESS.Moreover,FLS enhances the performance of IEMS by further improving the financial profit of MG owner and the life span of BESS,thus making the operation of prosumer building more economical and efficient.

Due to its fascinating and tunable optoelectronic properties,semiconductor nanomaterials are the best choices for multidisciplinary applications.Particularly,the use of semiconductor photocatalysts is one of the promising ways to harness solar energy for useful applications in the field of energy and environment.In recent years,metal oxide-based tailored semiconductor photocatalysts have extensively been used for photocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide(CO_(2))into fuels and other useful products utilizing solar energy.This is very significant not only from renewable energy consumption but also from reducing global warming point of view.Such current research activities are promising for a better future of society.The present mini-review is focused on recent developments(2–3 years)in metal oxide semiconductor hybrid photocatalysts-based photo-electrochemical conversion of CO_(2)into fuels and other useful products.First,general mechanism of photo-electrochemical conversion of CO_(2)into fuels or other useful products has been discussed.Then,various metal oxide-based emerging hybrid photocatalysts including tailoring of their morphological,compositional,and optoelectronic properties have been discussed with emphasis on their role in enhancing photoelectrochemical efficienty.Afterwards,mechanism of their photo-electrochemical reactions and applications in CO_(2)conversion into fuels/other useful products have been discussed.Finally,challenges and future prospects have been discussed followed by a summary.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)and type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)are two disease conditions for which obesity is a risk factor.^(1)Due to the close relationship between the three pathologies,researchers frequently use the same mouse models to identify the underlying processes of obesity,NAFLD,and T2DM.For instance,leptin(Lep)-null(ob/ob)and leptin receptor(Lepr)-deficient(db/db)mice spontaneously develop NAFLD and show different phenotypes of extreme obesity and diabetes,respectively.

Morphological and molecular description of a new species of sandfly,Sergentomyia(Neophlebotomus)ashwanii sp.nov.(Diptera:Psychodidae)from Western Ghats,India

Objective:To report a new species of sandfly,Sergentomyia(Neophlebotomus)ashwanii sp.nov.(Diptera:Psychodidae)from Western Ghats,India.Methods:A systematic sandfly survey was conducted in the Thrissur and Kollam districts of Kerala,India using mechanical aspirators,light and sticky traps,both indoor and outdoor habitats,for a period of one year.Deoxyribonucleic acid barcoding of samples was performed targeting mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I(COI)gene and sequence generated was subjected to phylogenetic analysis.Results:Sergentomyia(Neophlebotomus)ashwanii,a new sandfly species is recorded and described in this communication.A single row of 10-12 pointed teeth in the cibarium with 4-6 small denticles or fore-teeth are the key characteristics that is distinctive from other members of the subgenus Neophlebotomus.Mitochondrial COI barcode followed by phylogenetic analysis of the nucleotide sequence confirms that specimens of the species belong to the same taxonomic group while the genetic distance(14.2%)with the congeners established it to be a different species.Conclusions:The Western Ghats'being an important biodiversity hotspot and has dearth of systematic entomological surveys on sandflies.The current study tried to fill the void and also report a new sandfly species.

Management of proximal tibial stress fracture associated with advanced knee osteoarthritis:A systematic review

Purpose:Tibial stress fracture associated with knee osteoarthritis is an unusual and difficult clinical scenario.There is no clear existing treatment guideline for this uncommon clinical disease.The aim of this study is to review the impact of various treatment options for patients with advanced knee osteoarthritis associated with proximal tibial stress fracture.Methods:The study was performed using the databases of PubMed and Scopus.Methodological index for non-randomized studies score was used to evaluate the included studies’bias.The concluded data included the treatment approach,reported outcome measure,and time to fracture union.The literature search was started in December 2021 and accomplished in January 2022.A narrative description of the different methods and comparison of their results were done.Results:Out of total assessed 69 studies,9 studies were included in our review.The commonest treatment approach used was total knee arthroplasty by long tibial stem extension.The mean preoperative knee society score and knee functional score were 30.62 and 23.17,respectively.The mean postoperative knee society knee score was 86.87,while the functional score was 83.52.The average reported time to achieve fracture union was 4 months(a range of 2.07-5.50 months).Conclusion:The optimal clinical outcome for treating either acute or mobile tibial stress fracture in patients with advanced knee osteoarthritis can be achieved with long stem total knee arthroplasty.However,due to heterogeneity of data,comparison of different treatment options for chronic proximal tibial stress fracture mal-union/non-union coexisting with knee osteoarthritic and such inferences need to be judged cautiously.

The integration of WhatsApp,a widely-used instant messaging application(IMA),into the realm of orthopaedics and trauma surgery has emerged as a significant development in recent years.This paper explores the multifaceted role of WhatsApp in orthopaedics,focusing on its clinical and non-clinical applications,advantages,disadvantages,and future prospects.The study synthesizes findings from various research papers,emphasizing the growing reliance on mobile technology in healthcare.WhatsApp’s role in orthopaedics is notable for its ease of use,real-time communication,and accessibility.Clinically,it facilitates triage,teleconsultation,diagnosis,treatment,patient advice,and post-operative monitoring.Non-clinically,it supports telemedicine,teleradiology,virtual frac-ture clinics,research,and education in orthopaedic surgery.The application has proven beneficial in enhancing communication among healthcare teams,providing quick responses,and motivating junior physicians.Its use in educational settings has been shown to improve learner’s understanding and patient care.However,the use of WhatsApp in orthopaedics is not without challenges.Risks include the potential spread of misleading information,privacy concerns,and issues with image quality affecting diagnosis and treatment decisions.The paper acknowledges the importance of maintaining professional boundaries and the need for oversight measures to ensure content accuracy.Looking forward,the potential of WhatsApp and similar IMAs in orthopaedics lies in their ability to streamline data collection and retrieval,improve doctor-patient communication,and address challenges like bureaucratic red tape and limited resources.The paper suggests that future orthopaedic practice,particularly in emergency departments,will increasingly rely on such technologies for efficient patient management.This shift,however,must be approached with an understanding of the ethical,legal,and practical implications of integrating social media and mobile technology in healthcare.

The pinning of quantized magnetic vortices in superconducting YBa_(2)Cu_(3)O_(7-δ)(YBCO or Y123)thin films with Y_(2)BaCuO_(5)(Y211)nanoinclusions have been investigated over wide temperature range(4.2-77 K).The concentration of Y211 nanoinclusions has been systematically varied inside YBCO thin films prepared by laser ablation technique using surface modified target approach.Large pinning force density values(Fp∼0.5 TNm^(−3)at 4.2 K,9 T)have been observed for the YBCO film with moderate concentration of Y211 nanoinclusions(3.6 area%on ablation target).In addition,uniform enhancement in critical current density(J_(c))was observed in the angular dependent J_(c)measurement of YBCO+Y211 nanocomposite films.Y211 nanoinclusions have been found to be very efficient in pinning the quantized vortices thereby enhancing the in‐field J_(c)values over a wide range of temperature.Increasing the concentration of Y211 secondary phase into Y123 film matrix results into agglomeration of Y211 phase and observed as increased Y211 nanoparticle size.These larger secondary phase nanoparticles are not as efficient pinning centers at lower temperatures as they are at higher temperatures due to substantial reduction of the coherence length at lower temperatures.Investigation of the temperature dependence of J_(c)for YBCO+Y211 nanocomposite films has been conducted and possible vortex pinning mechanism in these nanocomposite films has been discussed.

Systemic Risks: A Homomorphic Approach on the Basis of Complexity Science

Although the notion of systemic risk gained prominence with respect to financial systems, it is a generic term that refers to risks of increasing importance in many domains—risks that cannot be tackled by conventional techniques of risk management and governance. We build on a domain-overarching definition of systemic risks by highlighting crucial properties that distinguish them from conventional risks and plain disasters. References to typical examples from various domains are included. Common features of systemic risks in different domains—such as the role of agents and emergence phenomena, tipping and cascading, parameters indicating instability, and historicity—turn out to be more than noncommittal empirical observations. Rather these features can be related to fundamental theory for relatively simple and well-understood systems in physics and chemistry. A crucial mechanism is the breakdown of macroscopic patterns of whole systems due to feedback reinforcing actions of agents on the microlevel, where the reinforcement is triggered by boundary conditions moving beyond critical tipping points.Throughout the whole article, emphasis is placed on the role of complexity science as a basis for unifying the phenomena of systemic risks in widely different domains.

Resilience-Driven Road Network Retrofit Optimization Subject to Tropical Cyclones Induced Roadside Tree Blowdown

This article focuses on decision making for retrofit investment of road networks in order to alleviate severe consequences of roadside tree blowdown during tropical cyclones.The consequences include both the physical damage associated with roadside trees and the functional degradation associated with road networks.A trilevel,two-stage,and multiobjective stochastic mathematical model was developed to dispatch limited resources to retrofit the roadside trees of a road network.In the model,a new metric was designed to evaluate the performance of a road network;resilience was considered from robustness and recovery efficiency of a road network.The proposed model is at least a nondeterministic polynomialtime hardness(NP-hard)problem,which is unlikely to be solved by a polynomial time algorithm.Pareto-optimal solutions for this problem can be obtained by a proposed trilevel algorithm.The random forest method was employed to transform the trilevel algorithm into a singlelevel algorithm in order to decrease the computation burden.Roadside tree retrofit of a provincial highway network on Hainan Island,China was selected as a case area because it suffers severely from tropical cyclones every year,where there is an urgency to upgrade roadside trees against tropical cyclones.We found that roadside tree retrofit investment significantly alleviates the expected economic losses of roadside tree blowdown,at the same time that it promotes robustness and expected recovery efficiency of the road network.
