At-rest lateral earth pressure of compacted expansive soils:Experimental investigations and prediction approach

This paper presents experimental studies on a compacted expansive soil,from Nanyang,China for investigating the at-rest lateral earth pressureσL of expansive *** key studies include(i)relationships between theσL and the vertical stressσV during soaking and consolidation,(ii)the influences of initial dry densityρd0 and moisture content w 0 on the vertical and lateral swelling pressures at no swelling strain(i.e.σV0 andσL0),and(iii)evolution of theσL during five long-term wetting-drying *** results demonstrated that the post-soakingσL-σV relationships are piecewise linear and their slopes in the passive state(σL>σV)and active state(σLkingσL-σV relationships converge to the consolidationσL-σV relationships at a thresholdσV where the interparticle swelling is ***σL0 andσV0 increase monotonically withρd0;however,they show increasing-then-decreasing trends with the w *** extent of compaction-induced swelling anisotropy,which is evaluated byσL0/σV0,reduces with an increase in the compaction energy and molding water ***σL reduces over moisture cycles and the stress relaxation in theσL during soaking is *** approach was developed to predict the at-rest soakingσL-σV relationships,which requires conventional consolidation and shear strength properties and one measurement of theσL-σV relationships during *** proposed approach was validated using the results of three different expansive soils available in the literature.

Review of methods for predicting in situ volume change movement of expansive soil over time

The soil movement information over time is required for the design of foundations placed in expansive soils. This information is also helpful for the assessment of pre-wetting and controlled wetting mitigation alternatives for expansive soils. Several researchers during the past fifteen years have proposed different methods for the prediction of the soil movements over time. The available methods can be categorized into(i) consolidation theory-based methods,(ii) water content-based methods, and(iii) suction-based methods. In this paper, a state-of-the-art of the prediction methods is succinctly summarized. The methods are critically reviewed in terms of their predictive capacity along with their strengths and limitations. The review highlights the need for prediction methods that are conceptually simple yet efficient for use in conventional engineering practice for different types of expansive soils.

Soil freezing process and different expressions for the soil-freezing characteristic curve

The soil-freezing characteristic curve(SFCC),which represents the relationship between unfrozen water content and subfreezing temperature(or suction at ice-water interface)in a freezing soil,can be used for understanding the transportation of heat,water,and solute in frozen *** this paper,the soil freezing process and the similarity between the SFCC of saturated frozen soil and soil-water characteristic curve(SWCC)of unfrozen unsaturated soil are *** on similar characteristics between SWCC and SFCC,a conceptual SFCC is drawn for illustrating the main features of soil freezing and thawing *** SFCC expressions from the literature are *** widely used expressions(i.e.,power relationship,exponential relationship,van Genuchten 1980 equation and Fredlund and Xing 1994 equation)are evaluated using published experimental data on four different soils(i.e.,sandy loam,silt,clay,and saline silt).Results show that the exponential relationship and van Genuchten(1980)equation are more suitable for sandy *** simple power relationship can be used to reasonably best-fit the SFCC for soils with different particle sizes;however,it exhibits limitations when fitting the saline silt *** Fredlund and Xing(1994)equation is suitable for fitting the SFCCs for all soils studied in this paper.

Promoting rigor in blockchain energy and environmental footprint research: A systematic literature review

There is a growing interest in understanding the energy and environmental footprint of digital currencies, specifically in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. These cryptocurrencies are operated by a geographically distributed network of computing nodes, making it hard to estimate their energy consumption accurately. Existing studies, both in academia and industry, attempt to model cryptocurrency energy consumption often based on a number of assumptions, for instance, about the hardware in use or the geographic distribution of the computing nodes. A number of these studies have already been widely criticized for their design choices and subsequent over- or under-estimation of energy use. In this study, we evaluate the reliability of prior models and estimates by leveraging existing scientific literature from fields cognizant of blockchain, such as social energy sciences and information systems. We first design a quality assessment framework based on existing research, and we then conduct a systematic literature review examining scientific and non-academic literature demonstrating common issues and potential avenues of addressing these issues. Our goal with this article is to advance the field by promoting scientific rigor in studies focusing on blockchain energy footprint. To that end, we provide a novel set of codes of conduct for the five most widely used research methodologies: Quantitative energy modeling, literature reviews, data analysis and statistics, case studies, and experiments. We envision that this code of conduct would assist in standardizing the design and assessment of studies focusing on blockchain-based systems' energy and environmental footprint.

In this study,the truncated octahedral CeO_(2)(CeO_(2)-to)with special morphology was prepared by the solvothermal method with oleic acid(OA)and oleamine(OM)as the morphology-directing ***-resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM)results show that CeO_(2)-to exposes composite{100}and{111}facets,while CeO_(2)cubic(CeO_(2)-c)and CeO_(2)octahedral(CeO_(2)-o)only expose single crystal facets of{100}plane and{111}plane,***,this CeO_(2)-to photocatalyst exhibits remarkable photooxidation performance of gaseous acetaldehyde(CH_(3)CHO)degradation,in which CO_(2)generation value reaches 1.78 and 7.97-times greater than that of CeO_(2)-c and CeO_(2)-o,*** addition,the active species trapping experiment signifies that superoxide(·O_(2)^(-))and holes(h^(+))are the main reactive substances during the CH_(3)CHO degradation process,and the electron paramagnetic resonance(EPR)spectra indicates that the former is the major ***,the electron transfer mechanism between CeO_(2)-to{100}and{111}facets and the surface oxygen adsorption ability are revealed via density functional theory(DFT)*** is also confirmed that{100}facets are more conducive to the absorption of acetaldehyde than{111}***,a reasonable mechanism for improved photocatalytic CH_(3)CHO degradation on CeO_(2)-to is proposed based on relevant experiments and DFT *** study demonstrates that the systematic development of surface homojunction structured photocatalysts can efficiently increase the degradation activity for volatile organic compounds(VOCs).It also offers additional direction for optimizing the photocatalytic activity of other ceriumbased photocatalysts.

A Task Scheduling Algorithm Based on Clustering Pre-processing in Space-Based Information Network

With the diversification of space-based information network task requirements and the dramatic increase in demand, the efficient scheduling of various tasks in space-based information network becomes a new challenge. To address the problems of a limited number of resources and resource heterogeneity in the space-based information network, we propose a bilateral pre-processing model for tasks and resources in the scheduling pre-processing stage. We use an improved fuzzy clustering method to cluster tasks and resources and design coding rules and matching methods to match similar categories to improve the clustering effect. We propose a space-based information network task scheduling strategy based on an ant colony simulated annealing algorithm for the problems of high latency of space-based information network communication and high resource dynamics. The strategy can efficiently complete the task and resource matching and improve the task scheduling performance. The experimental results show that our proposed task scheduling strategy has less task execution time and higher resource utilization than other algorithms under the same experimental conditions. It has significantly improved scheduling performance.

Aiming at the environment such as ravines and obstacles that may be encountered in the actual movement,this paper proposes a method for optimizing the bounding and jumping motion based on the ground touching force trajectory and the air motion trajectory of the quadruped *** method of optimizing the ground reaction force according to the speed of the demand and the height of the jump,and adjusting the stance and swing time according to the relationship of dynamics and momentum *** the same time,under the constraints of dynamics and energy consumption of the robot system,considering the jumping distance and height,a method for optimizing the air trajectory of bounding and jumping is *** switching and landing stability control are also ***,the experimental results show that the quadruped robot has strong bounding and jumping ability,and has achieved stable bounding movement and forward jump movement of 0.8 m.

The tacticity of vinyl polymers is a key factor affecting the properties of ***,organic Brønsted acids have been demonstrated as effective catalysts for the development of highly stereoselective cationic reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer(RAFT)polymerizations of vinyl ethers,in which the use of RAFT agents could allow the control the molecular weight and tacticity of polymer products ***,the effect of RAFT agents on the tacticity-regulation remains elusive and lacks of *** this study,we synthesized four types of RAFT agents and evaluated their influence in the stereoselective cationic polymerization of isobutyl vinyl ether in the presence of PADI as a Brønsted acid catalyst,which unveils that the Z group of RAFT agents could not only affect the polydispersity of the products,but also exert a profound effect on the *** extensive screening of the RAFT agents,high stereoregularity(isotacticity,90%m)was obtained when using dithiocarbonate ester-type RAFT agents with a benzyloxy Z group.

Robust Correlation Clustering Problem with Locally Bounded Disagreements

Min-max disagreements are an important generalization of the correlation clustering problem(CorCP).It can be defined as *** a marked complete graph G=(V,E),each edge in the graph is marked by a positive label"+"or a negative label"_"based on the similarity of the connected *** goal is to find a clustering C of vertices V,so as to minimize the number of disagreements at the vertex with the most ***,the disagreements are the positive cut edges and the negative non-cut edges produced by clustering *** paper considers two robust min-max disagreements:min-max disagreements with outliers and min-max disagreements with *** parameter δ∈(0,1/14),we first provide a threshold-based iterative clustering algorithm based on LP-rounding technique,which is a(1/δ,7/(1-14δ))-bi-criteria approximation algorithm for both the min-max disagreements with outliers and the min-max disagreements with outliers on one-sided complete bipartite ***,we verify that the above algorithm can achieve an approximation ratio of 21 for min-max disagreements with penalties when we set parameter δ=1/21.
