Serum estradiol levels decrease after oophorectomy in transmasculine individuals on testosterone therapy

Transmasculine individuals,considering whether to undergo total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingectomy,have the option to have a concomitant *** studies have evaluated hormone changes following testosterone therapy initiation,most of those patients have not undergone *** are currently limited to support health outcomes regarding the decision to retain or remove the *** performed a retrospective chart review of transmasculine patients maintained on high-dose testosterone therapy at a single endocrine clinic in Vancouver,British Columbia,*** transmasculine individuals who underwent bilateral oophorectomy and had presurgical and postsurgical serum data were *** identified 12 transmasculine subjects as controls,who were on testosterone therapy and did not undergo oophorectomy,but additionally matched to the first group by age,testosterone dosing regimen,and body mass *** was a statistically significant decrease in the estradiol levels of case subjects postoophorectomy,when compared to presurgical estradiol levels(P=0.02).There was no significant difference between baseline estradiol levels between control and case subjects;however,the difference in estradiol levels at follow-up measurements was significant(P=0.03).Total testosterone levels did not differ between control and case subjects at baseline and follow-up(both P>0.05).Our results demonstrate that oophorectomy further attenuates estradiol levels below what is achieved by high-dose exogenous testosterone *** clinical outcomes,such as impacts on bone health,were not *** clinical implications of oophorectomy versus ovarian retention on endocrinological and overall health outcomes are currently limited.

A bony foreign body found in a patient with no bony injury： a case report

Open fractures with bone loss are a common occurrence following high energy trauma. But usually the bone fragments are lost on the roadside and are not usable. We report a patient who was involved in a head-on collision between two wheelers and presented with a bone fragment embedded in his thigh. Radiological survey revealed no bony injury in that patient. Another patient, who presented at the same time, sustained a segmental fracture of shaft femur and was found to have lost a bone fragment that was similar to the one found in previous patient. CT scan with 3D reconstruction revealed this missing fragment to be the same as that found in previous patient. Both patients had a history of head-on collision while travelling on a two-wheeler. Present case report throws some highlights on the probable mechanism of injury.

Pharmaceutical is one of the noteworthy classes of emerging contaminants. These biologically active compounds pose a range of deleterious impacts on human health and the environment. This is attributed to their refractory behavior, poor biodegradability, and pseudopersistent nature. Their large-scale production by pharmaceutical industries and subsequent widespread utilization in hospitals, community health centers, and veterinary facilities, among others, have significantly increased the occurrence of pharmaceutical residues in various environmental compartments. Several technologies are currently being evaluated to eliminate pharmaceutical compounds (PCs) from aqueous environments. Among them, adsorption appears as the most viable treatment option because of its operational simplicity and low cost. Intensive research and development efforts are, therefore, currently underway to develop inexpensive adsorbents for the effective abatement of PCs. Although numerous adsorbents have been investigated for the removal of PCs in recent years, biochar-based adsorbents have garnered tremendous scientific attention to eliminate PCs from aqueous matrices because of their decent specific surface area, tunable surface chemistry, scalable production, and environmentally benign nature. This review, therefore, attempts to provide an overview of the latest progress in the application of biochar for the removal of PCs from wastewater. Additionally, the fundamental knowledge gaps in the domain knowledge are identified and novel strategic research guidelines are laid out to make further advances in this promising approach towards sustainable development.

Organic electrochemical transistors(OECTs)have been hailed as highly sensitive biomolecular sensors among organic electronic devices due to their superior stability in an aqueous environment and high *** the same time,plasmon based sensors are known to provide high sensitivity for biosensing due to the highly localized plasmonic *** we report a plasmonic OECT(POET)device that synchronizes the advantages of OECTs and plasmonic sensors on a single *** platform is fabricated by a simple,cost-effective,and high-throughput nanoimprinting process,which allows plasmonic resonance peak tuning to a given visible wavelength of interest for versatile *** glucose sensing as proof,a five-times sensitivity enhancement is obtained for POET compared to a regular(non-plasmonic)***,the POET paves the way to a new paradigm of optoelectronic sensors that combines the inherent high sensitivity of OECTs and localized plasmonic field to sense a vast realm of biomolecules.

E-learning is the most promising venture in the entire world. During the COVID-19 lockdown, e-learning is successfully providing potential information to the students and researchers. In developing nations like India, with limited resources, e-learning tools and platforms provide a chance to make education available to middle and low income households. This paper gives insights about three different online services, namely Google Classroom,Zoom, and Microsoft Teams being used by three different educational institutions. We aim to analyze the efficiency and acceptability of e-learning tools among Indian students during the COVID-19 lockdown. The paper also aims to evaluate the impact of e-learning on the environment and public health during COVID-19 lockdown. It is found that e-learning has potential to reduce carbon emissions, which has beneficial impact on the environment. However, the mental health is impacted as e-learning may lead to self-isolation and reduction in academic achievements that may lead to anxiety and mental depression. Due to usage of electronic devices for learning, the eyes and neck muscles may be put in strain, having deleterious effects on physical health.

Recent progress in carbonaceous materials based Z-scheme and Sscheme heterojunctions for photocatalytic clean energy generation

Carbonaceous materials including carbon nanotubes/nanofibers, graphene, graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide,graphyne, graphdiyne, carbon quantum dots and fullerenes have gained considerable attention in the recent years for their unique properties such as high conductivity, excellent stability and biocompatibility. The integration of these carbonaceous materials into Zscheme and S-scheme heterojunctions has emerged as a transformative strategy to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency for energy conversion applications. This review delves into the fundamental principles of clean energy generation such as photocatalytic H2generation and CO2reduction, elucidating their respective mechanisms and advantages. Furthermore, various types of carbonaceous materials, their synthesis and construction of Z-scheme and S-scheme heterojunctions are discussed emphasizing their role in promoting charge separation, reducing recombination losses and extending the spectral response range. With the focus on solar fuel production,the recent advancements in carbonaceous based Z-scheme and S-scheme heterojunctions are discussed and summarized for photocatalytic H2generation and CO2reduction. Lastly, the current bottlenecks and challenges in the field of carbonaceous based photocatalysts are discussed with the valuable insights for future development in this particular field.

Role of Joshi＇s external stabilization system with percutaneous screw fixation in high-energy tibial condylar fractures associated with severe soft tissue injuries

Purpose： The treatment of high-energy tibial condylar fractures which are associated with severe soft tissue injuries remains contentious and challenging. In this study, we assessed the results of Joshi＇s external stabilization system （JESS） by using the principle of ligamentotaxis and percutaneous screw fixation for managing high-energy tibial condylar fractures associated with severe soft tissue injuries. Methods： Between June 2008 and June 2010, 25 consecutive patients who were 17-71 years （mean, 39.7）, underwent the JESS fixation for high-energy tibial condylar fractures associated with severe soft tissue injuries. Out of 25 patients, 2 were lost during follow-up and in 1 case early removal of frame was done, leaving 22 cases for final follow-up. Among them, 11 had poor skin condition with abrasions and blisters and 2 were open injuries （Gustilo-Anderson grade I ＆ 11）. The injury mechanisms were motor vehicle accidents （n - 19）, fall from a height （n = 2） and assault （n - 1）. The fractures were classified according to Schatzker classification system. Results： There were 7 type-V, 14 type-Vl and 1 type-IV Schatzker＇s tibial plateau fractures. The average interval between the injury and surgery was 6.8 days （range 2-13）. The average hospital stay was 13 days （range, 7-22）. The average interval between the surgery and full weight bearing was 13.6 weeks （range 11-20）. The average range of knee flexion was 121° （range 105°-135°）. The normal extension of the knee was observed in 20 patients, and an extensor lag of 5°-8° was noted in 2 patients. The complications included superficial pin tract infections （n 4） with no knee stiffness. Conclusion： JESS with lag screw fixation combines the benefit of traction, external fixation, and limited internal fixation, at the same time as allowing the ease of access to the soft tissue for wound checks, pin care, dressing changes, measurement of compartment pressure, and the monitoring of the neurovascular status. Contralateral reversed distal femoral locking plate for fixation of subtrochanteric femoral fractures

Purpose： Subtrochanteric fractures of the femur are being managed successfully with various intramedullary and extramedulary implants with reasonable success. However, these implants require precise placement under image intensifier guidance, which exposes the surgeon to substantial amount of radiation. It also restricts the management of these fractures at peripheral centers where facility of image intensifiers is not available. Keeping this in mind we designed this study to identify if contralateral reversed distal femoral locking plate can be used successfully without the use of image intensifier. Methods： Twenty-four consecutive patients （18 men and 6 women） with a mean age of 28 years （range 19-47 years） suffering subtrochanteric fractures of the femur underwent open reduction and internal fixation with reversed contralateral distal femoral locking plate. The outcome was assessed at the mean follow-up period of 3.2 years （range 2-4.6 years） using the Harris hip score. Results： Twenty-one fractures united with the primary procedure, with a mean time of consolidation being 11 weeks （range, 9-16 weeks）. One patient developed superficial suture line infection, which resolved with oral antibiotics. Another patient had a fall 3 weeks after surgery and broke the plate. Repeat surgery with reversed distal femoral locking compression plate was performed along with bone grafting and the fracture united. Two cases had nonunion, which went in for union after bone grafting. The mean Harris hip score at the time of final follow-up was 90.63 （range 82-97）. Conclusion： The reversed contralateral distal femoral plate is a biomechanically sound implant, which when used for fixation of the subtrochanteric fractures with minimal soft tissue stripping shows results comparable to those achieved by using other extramedullary implants as well as intramedullary devices. The added advantage of this implant is its usability in the absence of an image intensifier.
