Enhancing the efficiency of nitrogen removing bacterial population to a wide range of C:N ratio(1.5:1 to 14:1)for simultaneous C&N removal

High C:N ratio in the wastewater limits biological nitrogen removal(BNR),especially in anammox based *** present study attempts to improve the COD tolerance of the BNR process by associating methanogens with nitrogen removing bacterial(NRB)*** new microbial system coined as‘Methammox’,was investigated for simultaneous removal of COD(C)and ammonia(N)at C:N ratio 1.5:1 to 14:*** ammonia removal rate(11.5 mg N/g VSS/d)and the COD removal rates(70.6 mg O/g VSS/d)of Methammox was close to that of the NRB(11.1 mg N/g VSS/d)and the methanogenic populations(77.9 mg O/g VSS/d),*** activities established that these two populations existed simultaneously and independently in‘Methammox’.Further studies in biofilm reactor fetched a balanced COD and ammonia removal(55%–60%)at a low C:N ratio(£2:1)and high C:N ratio(≥9:1).The population abundance of methanogens was reasonably constant,but the nitrogen removal shifted from mixotrophy to heterotrophy as the C:N ratio shifted from low(C:N£2:1)to high(C:N≥9:1).The reduced autotrophic NRB(ammonia-and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria and Anammox)population at a high C:N ratio was compensated by the fermentative group that could carry out denitrification *** functional plasticity of the Methammox system to adjust to a broad C:N ratio opens new frontiers in biological nitrogen removal of high COD containing wastewaters.

Model Predictive Control of Resonant Systems Using Kautz Model

The scope of this paper broadly spans in two areas： system identification of resonant system and design of an efficient control scheme suitable for resonant systems. Use of filters based on orthogonal basis functions （OBF） have been advocated for modelling of resonant process. Kautz filter has been identified as best suited OBF for this purpose. A state space based system identification technique using Kautz filters, viz. Kautz model, has been demonstrated. Model based controllers are believed to be more efficient than classical controllers because explicit use of process model is essential with these modelling techniques. Extensive literature search concludes that very few reports are available which explore use of the model based control studies on resonant system. Two such model based controllers are considered in this work, viz. model predictive controller and internal model controller. A model predictive control algorithm has been developed using the Kautz model. The efficacy of the model and the controller has been verified by two case studies, viz. linear second order underdamped process and a mildly nonlinear magnetic ball suspension system. Comparative assessment of performances of these controllers in those case studies have been carried out.

Thermal conductivity(k)of iron is measured up to about 134 *** measurements are carried out using the single sided laser heated diamond anvil cell,where the power absorbed by a Fe metal foil at hotspot is calculated using a novel thermodynamical *** conductivity of fee(γ)-Fe increases up to a pressure of about46 *** find thermal conductivity values in the range of 70-80 Wm-1K-1(with an uncertainty of 40%),almost constant with pressure,in the hcp(e)phase of *** attribute the pressure independent k above 46 GPa to the strong electronic correlation effects driven by the electronic topological transition(ETT).We predict a value of thermal conductivity ofε-Fe of about 40±16 Wm-1K-1 at the outer core of Earth.

Optical characterization of nano-sized organic carbon particles emitted from a small gasoline engine

The nano-sized organic carbon （NOC） particles emitted from a small gasoline engine were characterized using various ex situ optical techniques to assess their hazardous impact. The exhaust gas was sampled iso-kinetically by a quartz probe and passed through de-ionized water to gather the hydrophilic car- bonaceous particulates as hydrosol. The hydrodynamic diameter of the particles ranged between 1.7 and 3.6 nm at no load, with a mean diameter of 2.4 nm. The particle size in the engine exhaust was found to increase at higher loads, which is attributed to coagulation of the particles. The chemical structure of the particles was analyzed using UV-vis and infra-red spectroscopy. Both the band gap energy and oscillator strength data evaluated from the UV-vis absorbance showed that the NOC particles contained polyaromatic hydrocarbon structures with three to five aromatic rings. Infra-red spectroscopy analysis further confirmed the presence of aliphatic and carbonyl functionalities in the aromatic structures of the particles. The fine size of the particles, their high number concentration for the type of the engine under study and their structural features, make the particles extremely hazardous for environment and health.

Study of anti ulcer activity of Ficus religiosa *** experimentally induced gastric ulcers in rats

Abscisic Acid Signal off the STARTing Block

The year 2009 marked a real turnaround in our understanding of the mode of abscisic acid （ABA） action. Nearly 25 years had elapsed since the first biochemical detection of ABA-binding proteins in the plasmalemma of Vicia guard cells was reported. This recent--and laudable--achievement is owed largely to the discovery of the soluble ABA receptors whose major interacting proteins happen to be some of the most well-established components of earliest steps in ABA signaling. These soluble receptors, with the double name of PYRABACTIN RESISTANCE （PYR） or REGULATORY COMPONENT OF ABA RECEPTOR （RCAR）, are a family of Arabidopsis proteins of about 150-200 amino acids that share a conserved START domain. The ABA signal transduction circuitry under non-stress conditions is muted by the clade A protein phosphatases 2C （PP2C）（notably HAB1, ABI1, and ABI2）. During the initial steps of ABA signaling, the binding of the hormone to the receptor induces a conformational change in the latter that allows it to sequester the PP2Cs. This excludes them from the negative regulation of the downstream ABA-activated kinases （OST1/SnRK2.6/SRK2E, SnRK2.2, and SnRK2.3）, thus unleashing the pathway by freeing them to phosphorylate downstream targets that now include several b-ZIP transcription factors, ion channels （SLAC1, KAT1）, and a NADPH oxidase （AtrbohF）. The discovery of this family of soluble receptors and the rich insight already gained from structural studies of their complexes with different isoforms of ABA, PP2C, and the synthetic agonist pyrabactin lay the foundation towards rational design of chemical switches that can bolster drought hardiness in plants.

Applicability of unique scarf joint configuration in friction stir welding of AA6061-T6:Analysis of torque,force,microstructure and mechanical properties

The present research introduces a unique concept of scarf joint technique in friction stir welding(FSW) of aluminum alloy AA 6061-T6 plates and an investigation on weld quality.A new joint configuration with two distinct scarf angles(75°and 60°) was considered in this *** various aspects of welding were compared with contemporary simple square butt(SSB) joint *** was carried out at a constant tool rotation speed(TRS),tool traverse speed(TTS) and tool tilt angle of 1100 rpm,2 mm/s and2°,*** results are analyzed in terms of force and torque distribution,microstructure,macrostructure,and mechanical property perspective for different joint *** study reveals the minimum amount of force and torque at 60°scarf angle joint configuration compared to that of square butt joint *** study shows that all the joints were defect-free,and a prominent onion ring was present in the lower portion of the weld nugget(WN).Fine equiaxed grains with a minimum average grain size diameter of 6.82 μm were obtained in the WN of scarf joint configuration(SJC).The maximum ultimate tensile strength(UTS) and maximum average NZ hardness of 267 MPa and83.82 HV0.1were obtained in SJC3 at a scarf angle of 60°.It has been observed from the investigation that the joint efficiency increases from 72.5%(SSB) to 86%(SJC3) at a 60° scarf *** unique characteristic may lay an impetus on probable joint strength enhancement technique without increasing the production cost.
