Grape pomace contains high amounts of bioactive compounds, mainly polyphenols, with different concentrations depending on several factors: grape variety, vinification procedures, even within the same cultivar variation may be due to the geographic regions and wine vintage. Therefore, phenolic, antioxidant, macro- and micronutritional composition of wine waste (pomace and seed) originating from Lacrima di Morro d'Alba red grape variety and pomace of Verdicchio white variety were evaluated for the first time. LC-MS/MS analysis showed the presence of 32 phenolic compounds. The phenolic profile was different in pomace of both varieties: white grape pomaces showed the predominance of flavan-3-ols, while anthocyanins were predominant in red pomaces. Comparing seeds and pomace of Lacrima di Morro d'Alba, catechin and epicatechin are representative compounds in red grape seeds, while malvidin-3-galactoside and petunidin-3-glucoside are the most abundant compounds in pomace of all wineries. Highest TPC and antioxidant activities determined by UV-vis spectrophotometer were observed in seed samples. High dietary fibers, polyunsaturated fatty acids, minerals and protein contents were observed in all samples. Wine byproducts of both grape varieties appeared to be a good source of phenolic and nutritional compounds;therefore, they could be a cheap alternative for phenolics production and development of new functional foods.

The Sit-to-Stand （STS） is an activity most people perform numerous times daily. Standing up deals with the transition from two stabilized postures, namely seated to standing, with movement of all body segments except the feet. During the STS the body＇s Center of Gravity （COG） is moved upward from a sitting position to a standing position without losing balance and requiring a good coordination of many muscles. Three main phases of the STS movement can be recognized. One begins to stand up by inclining the upper body forward, which moves body mass toward the feet in order to maintain balance after lift-off. Prior to leaving the chair, hip and knee extensor muscles are activated to provide antigravity support for these joints, this action is commonly referred to as ＂weight shift＂. Finally; after leaving the chair, the leg and trunk joints are straightened to achieve upright stance. The STS task can be considered of major importance for impaired and elderly people to achieve minimal mo- bility and independence. In this paper we detail a procedure for the design of assisting devices to be used for the STS. In par- ticular, an experimental procedure is described firstly to track and record point trajectories and the orientation of the trunk during the STS. This analysis is then used to get information for the design of assisting devices. A proposal and simulation results are presented for a novel mechatronic system. In particular, for the case under study experimental tests are used to drive the actua- tion system for the reported simulation. A functional mechatronic scheme is then proposed to control the device during its operation.

To sustain the transition to a greener economy and greener manufacturing,it is necessary to develop new approaches and technologies to repair metal components;this will result in a drastic reduction in energy and material *** this study,wire arc additive manufacturing(WAAM)was used to deposit a layer of new material on an existing surface,with the objective of finding the optimal configuration that maximized the layer quality and material *** parameters considered are the stepover among the deposited beads and the inclination of the torch with respect to the repaired *** inclination angle is crucial when repairing complex surfaces,like those of a mold,owing to accessibility issues,the torch cannot be maintained orthogonal to the surfaces along the entire *** configurations were tested in order to assess the quality of the materials in terms of the presence of material voids,depth of penetration,and the heat affected zone(HAZ)and to understand the effects of these variables on the material efficiency and thickness of the repairing *** should be noted that by adopting deposition parameters set to have a low heat input,the use of a tilting angle has beneficial effects on the quality of the deposited layer and the process *** and geometrical measurements were carried out to assess the effect of these two variables depositing a layer of plain carbon steel.

It is well recognized that one cause of chronic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is alcohol *** in Italy and the United States concludes that the most common cause of HCC(responsible for 32%to 45%of HCC)is *** has recently been shown that a significant relationship between alcohol intake,metabolic changes,and hepatitis virus infection does *** may be a factor in the development of HCC via direct(genotoxic)and indirect mechanisms(cirrhosis).There is only one way of diagnosing HCC,which is early identification through surveillance,when curative treatments become *** stopping alcohol intake the risk of liver cancer decreases by 6%to 7%a year,and an estimated time period of 23 years is also ***,surveillance is also important in former drinkers and,in our opinion,independently from the presence of compensated *** cases of very early stage(VES)and early stage with portal hypertension,liver transplantation is the optimal option;and in cases of associated disease,percutaneous ethanol injections,radiofrequency and microwave ablation are the ideal *** the possibility of detecting microvascular invasion with HR,several studies and some randomized controlled trials revealed that overall survival and DSF rates in patients with VES HCC are much the same after ablation and ***,ablation can be regarded as a firstline choice for patients with VES *** is important to emphasize that the choice of treatment should be weighed carefully in the context of a multidisciplinary cancer team.

Case study for investigating groundwater and the future of mountain spring discharges in Southern Italy

Groundwater extraction is used to alleviate drought in many habitats. However, widespread drought decreases spring discharge and there is a need to integrate climate change research into resource management and action. Accurate estimates of groundwater discharge may be valuable in improving decision support systems of hydrogeological resource exploitation. The present study performs a forecast for groundwater discharge in Aquifer?s Cervialto Mountains(southern Italy). A time series starting in 1883 was the basis for longterm predictions. An Ensemble Discharge Prediction(EDis P) was applied, and the progress of the discharge ensemble forecast was inferred with the aid of an Exponential Smoothing(ES) model initialized at different annual times. EDisP-ES hindcast model experiments were tested, and discharge plume-patterns forecast was assessed with horizon placed in the year 2044. A 46-year cycle pattern was identified by comparing simulations and observations, which is essential for the forecasting purpose. ED is P-ES performed an ensemble mean path for the coming decades that indicates a discharge regime within ± 1 standard deviation around the mean value of 4.1 m^3 s^(-1). These fluctuations are comparable with those observed in the period 1961-1980 and further back, with changepoints detectable around the years 2025 and 2035. Temporary drought conditions are expected after the year 2030.

Among individuals with known alcohol use disorder(AUD),the prevalence of alcoholic fatty liver disease(AFLD)is present in 25-90%of cases(1).Shroff et al.(1)report that the annual progression to cirrhosis is 3%in the presence of AFLD,10%in case of alcohol-related steatohepatitis(ASH)and 8%with any grade of pre-cirrhotic ***-related liver disease(ALD)is the cause of 36%of cases of cirrhosis in the United States and nearly one half of cirrhosis-related deaths worldwide(1).Ethanol is a recognized carcinogen for several malignancies with the risk starting at low dose(10 gr/1 unit/day)(2).The link between alcohol consumption(AC)and hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is well known:various evaluations carried out by both USA and Italian groups indicate that such a correlation is present in 32%to 45%of cases(2).With the reduction of hepatitis C virus(HCV)cases,AC will become the main cause of HCC in Western ***,ALD and metabolic syndrome(MS)are currently the main causes of liver transplantation(LT)(3).

Results from several large epidemiological studies have firmly established that alcohol is associated with elevated cancer incidence and mortality. Recently the International Agency for Cancer Research stated that acetaldehyde associated with alcoholic beverages is carcinogenic to humans and confirmed the Group 1 classification of alcohol consumption and of ethanol in alcoholic beverages. Alcohol consumption causes cancers of the oral cavity,pharynx,larynx,oesophagus,colorectum,liver,pancreas and female breast. The frequency of most alcohol-induced diseases increases in a linear fashion as intake increases: oral,oesophagus and colon cancer fall into this pattern. Very little is known about safe margins of alcohol consumption. US Department of Health and Human Services suggest a maximum of 28 g of alcohol a day in man and half of this in women.
