We study the dynamics of short optical pulses in a real system with periodically distributed dispersion and the nonlinearity is governed by the higher order nonlinear Schr?dinger equation(HNLSE) with linear and nonlinear gain(loss). Under specific parametric circumstances, where the dark and bright solitary waves are combined, a set of entirely new types of solitary waves with nonlinear chirp have emerged. For a properly intense optical pulse in the combined solitary waves, the binding of the bright and dark solitary waves is very strong. It is seen that by numerical simulation, these pooled types of solitary-like solutions show a high degree of stability while propagating over an extremely long distance in the considering system, even in the presence of a high degree of perturbation of the amplitude and white noise. All constraint relations on the physical parameters are explicitly shown to be related to the development and to the dynamical study of the chirped solitary like solution in the considering medium.

At present time,most of the enzymes are derived from biological sources,including plants,animals,microalgae,algae,and other microorganisms.Microorganism enzymes,among the others,account for the biggest part of application and demand in industries.These enzymes from soil microorganisms are very essential not only for soil fertility but also for biotechnological significance.Soil enzymes from microalage,comprising Amylase,Carbonic anhydrase,Galactosidase,Laccase,L-Asparaginase,Lipase,Peroxidase,Phytase,Protease,and Superoxide dismutase attract a considerable amount of attention for themselves in various industries.Most of the enzymes mentioned above have a great potential for their application in biotechnology and agriculture.Majority of such enzymes are known for their versatility and countless applications in various fields;thus,performing research on these enzymes in the future would be auspicious.This review paper presents an overview of the potential of soil algae enzymes in fields like biotechnology,medicine and agriculture,and also provides areas for advancement in researches related to this field.

Many underutilized fruit plants are still obscure,in spite of possessing high medicinal and nutritional properties.Here,we reviewed one of the underutilized fruits tree(Choerospondias axillaris)and explored its occurrence,distribution,nutritional properties,phytochemicals,and medicinal value,along with associated challenges and prospects.Literature mining using scientific and common name of this plant species,yielded 77 articles,indicating limited availability of information.Various parts of the species including fruits,seeds and bark have the potential to be used in different daily needs and therapeutic activities.The core problem to underutilized fruit tree sustainability includes indiscrimination,lesser accessibility and acceptability,insufficient information on their growth and cultivation.The challenges for the production and marketing of C.axillaris fruits along with the opportunities of having a high source of income and health benefits from these plants have been discussed.A scheme for the enhancement of utility of this underutilized fruit plants has been suggested in this review.A collective effort of botanists,food scientists,government and international shareholders are needed for promoting its domestication and commercialization.C.axillaris fruits have been found to be a very promising resource in the areas of food and health industries,and possess great opportunity to flourish in the international market.

Effect of elevated [CO_2] and nutrient management on wet and dry season rice production in subtropical India

The present experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of elevated [CO_2] with varying nutrient management on rice–rice production system. The experiment was conducted in the open field and inside open-top chambers(OTCs) of ambient [CO_2](≈ 390 μmol L-1) and elevated [CO_2] environment(25% above ambient) during wet and dry seasons in 2011–2013at Kharagpur, India. The nutrient management included recommended doses of N, P, and K as chemical fertilizer(CF), integration of chemical and organic sources, and application of increased(25% higher) doses of CF. The higher [CO_2] level in the OTC increased aboveground biomass but marginally decreased filled grains per panicle and grain yield of rice, compared to the ambient environment. However, crop root biomass was increased significantly under elevated [CO_2]. With respect to nutrient management, increasing the dose of CF increased grain yield significantly in both seasons. At the recommended dose of nutrients, integrated nutrient management was comparable to CF in the wet season, but significantly inferior in the dry season, in its effect on growth and yield of rice. The [CO_2] elevation in OTC led to a marginal increase in organic C and available P content of soil, but a decrease in available N content. It was concluded that increased doses of nutrients via integration of chemical and organic sources in the wet season and chemical sources alone in the dry season will minimize the adverse effect of future climate on rice production in subtropical India.

One of the major challenges in Asian countries is the effective management of rice straw.To ensure food security for their ever-growing population,Asian countries grow more rice,leading to increasing rice straw generation.Burning of rice straw,a common practice,is detrimental to both environmental and human health.However,if managed effectively,rice straw has the potential to safeguard the sustainability of agricultural ecosystems and to uplift the economic security of the population depending on rice farming.Judicious management of rice straw involving minimum soil disturbance along with retention of residues alters the soil carbon cycle through reduced carbon emissions and increased levels of total soil organic carbon.Several alternative uses of rice straw,such as production of livestock feed,bioethanol,biochar,biogas,electricity,mushroom,and paper,can add prosperity to rice farmers’life by fetching extra income.It is evident that efficient management of rice straw is of enormous economic value.Therefore,it is essential to create awareness among the different rice stakeholders of these alternative economic avenues associated with rice straw.This review is an attempt to provide effective options for sustainable rice straw management and rice straw value chains for harnessing its economic potential.It further identifies gaps in our understanding of the effects of rice straw on ecological sustainability,particularly concerning the multifaceted connections between the diverse mechanisms of rice agro-ecosystems,which may greatly influence food security in the 21st century.

Cellulose is a linear biopolymer which is composed of nanofibrils,thus having a large surface area.This low-cost,low-density,high-specific-surface-area,easily processable polymer is found in nature in the form of plants,bacteria and tunicates.Cellulose has outstanding characteristics including low cytotoxicity,biocompatibility,good mechanical properties,high chemical stability,and cost effectiveness which make them suitable candidates for biomedical applications.The ma-nipulation of cellulose at nanoscale resulted in nanocellulose having exceptional physicochem-ical properties.Therefore,cellulose nanocomposite is a fascinating area of research which has applications in biomedical fields like wound healing,bone tissue engineering,three dimensional printing,drug carriers,medical implants etc.This review is mainly focused on the developments in the generation of cellulose nanocomposites and their potential applications in the biomedical field.

For a safe and sustainable environment,effective microbes as biocontrol agents are in high demand.We have isolated a new Bacillus velezensis strain DTU001,investigated its antifungal spectrum,sequenced its genome,and uncovered the production of lipopeptides in HPLC-HRMS analysis.To test the antifungal efficacy,extracts of B.velezensis DTU001 was tested against a range of twenty human or plant pathogenic fungi.We demonstrate that inhibitory potential of B.velezensis DTU001 against selected fungi is superior in comparison to single lipopeptide,either iturin or fengycin.The isolate showed analogous biofilm formation to other closely related Bacilli.To further support the biocontrol properties of the isolate,coculture with Candida albicans demonstrated that B.velezensis DTU001 exhibited excellent antiproliferation effect against C.albicans.In summary,the described isolate is a potential antifungal agent with a broad antifungal spectrum that might assist our aims to avoid hazardous pathogenic fungi and provide alternative to toxicity caused by chemicals.

Livestock Antibiotic Effects on Nitrification, Denitrification, and Microbial Community Composition in Soils

The broiler (Gallus gallus domesticus) industry in the United States and several other countries routinely includes subtherapeutic levels of antibiotics such as roxarsone, virginiamycin, and bacitracin in the feed to improve bird growth yields. Large fractions of the antibiotics fed to the birds are excreted in manure (litter), which is often applied to soils to improve fertility. Some concerns with this practice are antibiotic-induced alterations in microbially-mediated nutrient cycling, which could influence plant productivity and environmental quality. To investigate this possibility, a series of lab experiments were conducted to determine the effects of increasing levels of the three livestock antibiotics on nitrification, denitrification, and microbial community composition (fatty acid methyl ester profiles) of soils collected along a catena. Roxarsone and virginiamycin significantly influenced microbial community composition and inhibited nitrification in the soils, but only at levels that were several-fold higher than expected in poultry litter-applied soils. Bacitracin did not affect microbial growth, microbial community composition, or nitrification at any concentration tested (up to 500 mg·kg-1). None of the antibiotics influenced denitrification at environmentally-relevant concentrations. Amounts of antibiotics in soil solution were greatly reduced by sorption, which followed Freundlich models in the concentration range of 1 -?500 mg·L-1. Results from this study indicated that addition of roxarsone, virginiamycin, or bacitracin to these soils at environmentally-relevant concentrations would not likely impact microbial community composition, nitrification or denitrification due to intrinsic resistance/insensitivity of microorganisms to these antibiotics and reductions in the bioavailable amounts due to sorption by soil surfaces.

Consumption of herbal leafy porridges is a reputed dietary remedy among Sri Lankans in treating diabetes. The aim of the study was to develop a rice based herbal porridge [rice: fresh leaves: scraped coconut kernel 13 - 15: 25 - 30: 10 - 13 (w/w/w)] commercially with Scopariadulcis leaves which has proven antidiabetic effects and low GI (fresh porridge) which benefits diabetics. Two porridges with the same ingredient ratio were produced with different particle sizes. Porridge produced with 100% fine particles (extruded rice, leaves and scraped coconut mixed with rice powder) elicited a high GI for normal (92 ± 22) and diabetic (97 ± 20) subjects. The second porridge prepared with the minimum amount of extruded rice with other ingredients mixed with boiled and dried intact rice grains had a medium GI (normal 58 ± 11, diabetics 61 ± 11). A significant reduction (p < 0.05) in the peak blood glucose was observed in diabetic subjects for porridge 2 (12.4%) compared to porridge 1 (0.7%) when compared to glucose. The reason could be the significantly high (p0.5 mm) (63%) and minimum amount of extruded fine particles in porridge 2 compared to porridge 1 (1.3%).
