Bioavailability of Arsenic and Antimony in Terrestrial Ecosystems:A Review

Arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) are metalloids that belong to group 15 of the periodic table and exhibit toxic properties in the environment. They mostly occur naturally at low concentrations in soil, although these can be significantly elevated in both aquatic and terrestrial food chains as a result of dispersion from anthropogenic sources, e.g ., mining activities. The bioavailability, i.e., the proportion of the contaminant in soil and dust that is available for uptake by plants and other living organisms, presents the greatest risk to terrestrial ecosystems. Various in vivo and in vitro methods have been used to measure As and Sb bioaccessibility in soil and dust. In vivo measurement of bioavailability can be time consuming, expensive, and unethical;thus, in vitro methods are commonly preferred. However, there is considerable uncertainty around the efficacy of in vitro tools used to measure the bioavailable fractions of As and Sb. The results of these methods are dependent on many variables, e.g., soil characteristics, contaminant sources, and chemical composition of in vitro methods. Therefore, substantial variations are observed between in vitro and in vivo results obtained from different test animals and endpoints. In this paper, we review the literature on As and Sb bioavailability in terrestrial ecosystems and current in vivo and in vitro techniques used for assessing bioavailability and bioaccessibility of metalloids. This would reveal research gaps and allow scientists and environmental policy makers to gain a deeper understanding of the potential risks associated with these metalloids in the environment.

Arsenic(As)is a known carcinogen and naturally occurring semi-metal in soils and in the Earth's *** of soils and water with As poses a serious threat to millions of people worldwide due to its health hazards and toxicological ***,devising novel and efficient methods for remediation of contaminated areas has attracted a great deal of interest across the *** this study,we investigated the usefulness of synthetic birnessite,goethite,hexadecylpyridinium chloride-modified montmorillonite(HDPC-M),hexadecylpyridinium bromide-modified zeolite(HDPB-Z),and lanthanum(La)-doped magnetic biochar produced from eucalyptus bark(La-Euchar)as adsorbents at 10%dosage for As stabilization in a soil spiked with 1000 mg kg^(-1)*** effectiveness of the above adsorbents in As immobilization in soil was assessed using single-step extractions with 2 mol L^(-1)HNO_(3)and deionized water,the simplified bioaccessibility extraction test(SBET)method,and sequential extraction with the modified Community Bureau of Reference(BCR)*** of the adsorbents shifted the exchangeable fraction of As to more recalcitrant fractions and dramatically reduced the exchangeable fraction by 6%-99%and the extractable amounts with HNO_(3),deionized water,and SBET method by 30%-92%,17%-95%,and 12%-90%,respectively,compared to the unamended *** immobilizing effects of adsorbents on As decreased in the sequence of birnessite>La-Euchar>goethite>HDPB-Z>*** exhibited great affinity for As and drastically reduced As extractability by more than 90%in all single *** results revealed that HDPC-M,HDPB-Z,La-Euchar,birnessite,and goethite are promising immobilizing agents for in situ stabilization of As in terrestrial environments.

The present review explores the promising role of nanofluids and related hybrid variants in enhancing the efficiencyof flat tube car *** vehicles become more advanced and demand better thermal performance,traditional coolants are starting to fall ***,which involve tiny nanoparticles dispersed into standardcooling liquids,offer a new solution by significantly improving heat transfer *** article categorizesthe different types of nanofluids(ranging from those based on metals and metal oxides to carbon materials andhybrid combinations)and examines their effects on the improvement of radiator *** consensusexists in the literature that nanofluids can support better heat dissipation and enable accordingly the developmentof smaller and lighter radiators,which require less coolant and allow more compact vehicle ***,thisreview demonstrates that the use of nanofluids does not come without *** include the long-termstability of these fluids and material compatibility issues.A critical discussion is therefore elaborated about thegaps to be filled and the steps to be undertaken to promote and standardize the use of these fluids in the industry.

Macrofaunal Paleocommunities and Microfacies Analysis from the Upper Cretaceous in North Eastern Desert of Egypt

The Upper Cretaceous successions of Wadi Umm-Khayshar,southern Galala Plateau,North Eastern Desert,Egypt,are composed of highly diversified faunas and subdivided from base to top into the Galala(Middle-Late Cenomanian),Maghra El Hadida(Latest Cenomanian-Late Turonian),Matulla(Coniacian-Santonian),and Sudr(Campanian-Maastrichtian)*** ammonite biozones are recorded in the studied section:Neolobites vibrayeanus,Vascoceras cauvini(late Cenomanian),Vascoceras proprium,Choffaticeras segne,and Coilopoceras requienianum(Turonian)*** paleoenvironments of the Upper Cretaceous succession are interpreted based on detailed study and microfacies analysis that reflect a deposition in a homoclinal ramp platform ranging from intertidal to deep *** paleoecology of the Cenomanian-Turonian succession in the studied section is explained based on a detailed study of macrofaunal associations and sedimentary *** analysis(Q-mode cluster analysis,using the Raup-Crick Paired group method)of 1029 macrobenthic specimens,including 45 species of mollusks and echinoids yielded five macrofaunal associations(A-E)that are described and interpreted as remnants of *** nektonic elements are represented by 235 cephalopod specimens of 20 species;heatmap cluster analyses show the distribution of these specimens during the Upper Cenomanian-Turonian *** parameters(substrate consistency,rate of sedimentation,water energy,surface-water productivity,and oxygen availability)controlled the distribution of the studied *** five associations are divided into two major groups:low-stress associations(A,B,C,and D),and a highstress association(E).The low stress associations are recorded from two different habitats:(1)a high-energy,firm substrate habitat,dominated by epifaunal bivalves,large epifaunal gastropods and a regular echinoid;(2)a low-energy,soft substrate habitat dominated by infaunal bivalves and *** high stress associ

Seismotectonics of the Kuhbanan fault zone analyzed through spatial distribution of fractal dimensions

Fractal geometry quantitatively analyzes the irregular distribution of geological features,highlighting the dynamic aspects of tectonics,seismic heterogeneity,and geological *** study analyzed the active fault data along the Kuhbanan fault zone in southeastern Iran by applying the boxcounting method and observing the changes in Coulomb stress and tried to find the potential triggering *** entire region was divided into 16subzones with the box-counting method,and then the fractal dimension(D)in each zone was *** analysis of the fractal dimension for active faults and earthquake epicenters along with the seismicity parameter(b)and their ratio in the Kuhbanan region indicates an imbalance between seismic fractals and *** finding suggests that the area may have the potential for future earthquakes or hidden *** conjunction with b-value and changes in Coulomb stress change,D-value analysis reveals intense tectonic activity and stress accumulation,particularly within the Ravar,Zarand,and Kianshahr *** may be considered a potential location for future *** changes in Coulomb stress resulting from the 2005Dahuieh earthquake have also placed this region within the stress accumulation zone,potentially triggering the mentioned *** integrative approach,backed by historical earthquake data,highlights the impact of fault geometry and stress dynamics,offering an enhanced framework for earthquake forecasting and seismic risk mitigation applicable to other tectonically active areas within the Iranian plateau.

Noncommutativity and its role in constant-roll inflation models with non-minimal coupling constrained by swampland conjectures

In this paper, using Hamiltonian formalism, we obtain solutions for constant-roll inflation according to the noncommutativity and the non-minimal coupling field of the Lagrangian. We consider three different types of couplings: power-law, exponential, and logarithmic. Subsequently, by plotting some figures, we study the effects of these coupling in constant-roll inflation with noncommutative parameters. We identify and specify the permissible regions of each case of the swampland conjecture and determine the best model. We find that the exponential, logarithmic, and power-law couplings with θ>0 ar results in both cases, some of which are compatible and some incompatible with the dS swampland ***,θ>0 is more compatible than θ<0, and the consistency value in the second boundary condition is much higher than in the first. The order of better compatibility of couplings with the swampland conjecture is ranked as follows: exponential non-minimal coupling, logarithmic non-minimal coupling, and power-law non-minimal coupling. For each type of coupling, we calculate the values of the scalar spectral index n s and the tensor-to-scalar ratio r for two different potentials and compare them with the observational data from Planck 2018. We also determine the range of the free parameters(a, b, q)model consistent with the conjecture. We find that the model satisfies the FRDSSC for all types of couplings and both potentials, with some constraints on the parameters.

Heterogeneously integrated silicon-conductive oxide MOSCAP microring modulator array

In pursuit of energy-efficient optical interconnect, the silicon microring modulator（Si-MRM） has emerged as a pivotal device offering an ultra-compact footprint and capability of on-chip wavelength division multiplexing（WDM）. This paper presents a 1 × 4 metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitor（MOSCAP） Si-MRM array gated by high-mobility titanium-doped indium oxide（ITi O）, which was fabricated by combining Intel's high-volume manufacturing process and the transparent conductive oxide（TCO） patterning with the university facility. The 1 × 4 Si-MRM array exhibits a high electro-optic（E-O） efficiency with Vπ· L of 0.12 V · cm and achieves a modulation rate of（3 × 25 + 1 × 15） Gb/s with a measured bandwidth of 14 GHz. Additionally, it can perform on-chip WDM modulation at four equally spaced wavelengths without using thermal heaters. The process compatibility between silicon photonics and TCO materials is verified by such an industry-university co-fabrication approach for the MOSCAP Si-MRM array and demonstrated enhanced performance from heterogeneous integration.
