Composition analysis and antimicrobial activity of essential oil from leaves of Laurus nobilis grown in Oman

Traditionally,Laurus nobilis is used for the treatment of earaches and skin rashes as well as rheuma-tism.The most common technique to isolate the oil is hydro-distillation and steam-distillation.The investigation presented in this paper was aimed to unravel the antimicrobial activity and chemical composition of essential oil in the leaves of L.nobilis grown in Oman.The essential oil was extracted from the leave of the selected plant species by hydro distillation using Clevenger type apparatus.The antimicrobial assay was done by disc diffusion methods against three bac-terial strains,Staphylococcus aureus,Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli,and one fungal strain:Candida albicans.The isolated essential oil was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS).The percentage yield of the essential oil was 0.064%(w/w).The essen-tial oil was found actively against the applied bacterial and fungal strains.The highest activity was found against S.aureus and the lowest was against E.coli,and the order was S.aureus>P.aeruginosa>E.coli.The essential oil was also active against the fungus C.albicans.The range of inhibition zones was 6-14 mm.The results of GC-MS analysis showed(E)-𝛽-caryophyllene to be the major component about 59.62%.Other major components included𝛼-selinene(14.03%),𝛼-humulene(8.65%),𝛽-selinene(4.99%),and𝛼-pinene(4.98%).In addition,several minor com-ponents were found in the essential oil of L.nobilis.Based on the experimental results,it showed that the plant species that grown in Oman were a potential source of therapeutic agents.In con-clusion,the essential oil and the plant could be used as natural and potential therapeutic agents to treat earaches,skin rashes,and rheumatism.

Hippo-YAP/TAZ signaling in breast cancer:Reciprocal regulation of microRNAs and implications in precision medicine

Breast cancer is a molecularly heterogeneous disease and the most common female malignancy.In recent years,therapy approaches have evolved to accommodate molecular diversity,with a focus on more biologically based therapies to minimize negative consequences.To regulate cell fate in human breast cells,the Hippo signaling pathway has been associated with the alpha subtype of estrogen receptors.This pathway regulates tissue size,regeneration,and healing,as well as the survival of tissue-specific stem cells,proliferation,and apoptosis in a variety of organs,allowing for cell differentiation.Hippo signaling is mediated by the kinases MST1,MST2,LATS1,and LATS2,as well as the adaptor proteins SAV1 and MOB.These kinases phosphorylate the downstream effectors of the Hippo pathway,yes-associated protein(YAP),and transcriptional coactivator with PDZ-binding motif(TAZ),suppressing the expression of their downstream target genes.The Hippo signaling pathway kinase cascade plays a significant role in all cancers.Understanding the principles of this kinase cascade would prevent the occurrence of breast cancer.In recent years,small noncoding RNAs,or microRNAs,have been implicated in the development of several malignancies,including breast cancer.The interconnections between miRNAs and Hippo signaling pathway core proteins in the breast,on the other hand,remain poorly understood.In this review,we focused on highlighting the Hippo signaling system,its key parts,its importance in breast cancer,and its regulation by miRNAs and other related pathways.

BACKGROUND Colorectal cancer(CRC)is the third most frequent and the second most fatal cancer.The search for more effective drugs to treat this disease is ongoing.A better understanding of the mechanisms of CRC development and progression may reveal new therapeutic strategies.Ubiquitin-specific peptidases(USPs),the largest group of the deubiquitinase protein family,have long been implicated in various cancers.There have been numerous studies on the role of USPs in CRC;however,a comprehensive view of this role is lacking.AIM To provide a systematic review of the studies investigating the roles and functions of USPs in CRC.METHODS We systematically queried the MEDLINE(via PubMed),Scopus,and Web of Science databases.RESULTS Our study highlights the pivotal role of various USPs in several processes implicated in CRC:Regulation of the cell cycle,apoptosis,cancer stemness,epithelial–mesenchymal transition,metastasis,DNA repair,and drug resistance.The findings of this study suggest that USPs have great potential as drug targets and noninvasive biomarkers in CRC.The dysregulation of USPs in CRC contributes to drug resistance through multiple mechanisms.CONCLUSION Targeting specific USPs involved in drug resistance pathways could provide a novel therapeutic strategy for overcoming resistance to current treatment regimens in CRC.

Effect of geofoam as cover material in cut and cover tunnels on the seismic response of ground surface

In recent years,special attention has been given to the effects of underground spaces and structures on the seismic response of adjacent ground.Nevertheless,to the best of the authors′knowledge,no method has yet been considered to reduce these effects in technical literature.The present study aims to investigate the role of geofoam as the cover material in cut and cover tunnels on the seismic response of the ground surface.For this purpose,a numerical study was performed using FLAC 2D,a finite difference software,and verified against previous studies.The effects of parameters such as the geofoam type,thickness of the geofoam blocks and interfaces between the blocks,on the ground surface amplification pattern were investigated.Parametric studies demonstrate that the geofoam has a strong potential to attenuate the seismic horizontal movements of the ground surface.As the thickness of the geofoam blocks is decreased,its attenuation ability is increased.It was also determined that the interface between the geofoam blocks plays a key role in the attenuation of the aboveground seismic responses.Based on the results,it was concluded that geofoam is a proper material to attenuate seismic amplifications at the ground surface,induced by underground tunnels.

Smart stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems in spotlight of COVID-19

The world has been dealing with a novel severe acute respiratory syndrome(SARS-CoV-2)since the end of 2019,which threatens the lives of many peopleworldwide.COVID-19 causes respiratory infection with different symptoms,from sneezing and coughing to pneumonia and sometimes gastric symptoms.Researchers worldwide are actively developing novel drug delivery systems(DDSs),such as stimuli-responsive DDSs.The ability of these carriers to respond to external/internal and even multiple stimuli is essential in creating“smart”DDS that can effectively control dosage,sustained release,individual variations,and targeted delivery.To conduct a comprehensive literature survey for this article,the terms“Stimuli-responsive”,“COVID-19”and“Drug delivery”were searched on databases/search engines like“Google Scholar”,“NCBI”,“PubMed”,and“Science Direct”.Many different types of DDSs have been proposed,including those responsive to various exogenous(light,heat,ultrasound andmagnetic field)or endogenous(microenvironmental changes in pH,ROS and enzymes)stimuli.Despite significant progress in DDS research,several challenging issues must be addressed to fill the gaps in the literature.Therefore,this study reviews the drug release mechanisms and applications of endogenous/exogenous stimuli-responsive DDSs while also exploring their potential with respect to COVID-19.

Tw o variable Jacobi polynomials,as a two-dimensional basis,are applied to solve a class of temporal fractional partial differential equations.The fractional derivative operators are in the Caputo sense.The operational matrices of the integration of integer and fractional orders are presented.Using these matrices together with the Tau Jacobi method converts the main problem into the corresponding system of algebraic equations.An error bound is obtained in a two-dimensional Jacobi-weighted Sobolev space.Finally,the efficiency of the proposed method is demonstrated by implementing the algorithm to several illustrative examples.Results will be compared witli those obtained from some existing methods.

A review on the cracking,baking and leaching processes of rare earth element concentrates

Rare earth elements（REE） are a set of seventeen chemical elements in the periodic table, which have been found in a variety classes of minerals in the world. The global demand for REE and their compounds has increased in high-tech applications over the past decades due to their chemical, catalytic, electrical, magnetic, and optical properties. After mining, comminution and ore beneficiation, hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes are carried out to recover REE compounds. The concentrate cracking is a process wherein the structure of a REE mineral is modified in order to dissolve REE in a weak acid solution. This would be accomplished through various techniques such as alkaline cracking and acid baking. The cracked concentrate is then leached to dissolve REE in a solution and subsequently recover those via neutralization, precipitation or solvent extraction methods. This paper reviewed the cracking and leaching methods applied to REE concentrates to produce an intermediate product for further REE separation.

Immobilization of organophosphorus hydrolase enzyme by covalent attachment on modified cellulose microfibers using different chemical activation strategies:Characterization and stability studies

The plant cellulose powder was activated by two different methods using 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether(BTDE)and 1,1′-Carbonyldiimidazole(CDI) as the chemical coupling agents.Organophosphorus hydrolase(OPH) from Flavobacterium ATCC 27551 was immobilized on any of activated support through covalent bonding.The optimal conditions of affecting parameters on enzyme immobilization in both methods were found, and it was demonstrated that the highest activity yields of immobilized OPH onto epoxy and CDI treated cellulose were 68.32%and 73.51%, respectively.The surface treatment of cellulose via covalent coupling with BTDE and CDI agents was proved by FTIR analysis.The kinetic constants of the free and immobilized enzymes were determined, and it was showed that both immobilization techniques moderately increased the Kmvalue of the free OPH.The improvements in storage and thermal stability were investigated and depicted that the half-life of immobilized OPH over the surface of epoxy modified cellulose had a better growth compared to the free and immobilized enzymes onto CDI treated support.Also, the pH stability of the immobilized preparations was enhanced relative to the free counterpart and revealed that all enzyme samples would have the same optimum pH value for stability at 9.0.Additionally, the immobilized OPH onto epoxy and CDI activated cellulose retained about 59% and 68% of their initial activity after ten turns of batch operation, respectively.The results demonstrated the high performance of OPH enzyme in immobilized state onto an inexpensive support with the potential of industrial applications.
