Ba.kground a.d Purpose: Opioids, used for centuries to a.levia.e pa.n, ha.e become a.double-edged sword. While effective, they come with a.host of a.verse effects, including memory a.d cognition impa.rment. This review delves into the impa.t of opioid drugs on cognitive functions, explores underlying mecha.isms, a.d investiga.es their preva.ence in both medica. ca.e a.d illicit drug use. The ultima.e goa. is to find wa.s to mitiga.e their potentia. ha.m a.d a.dress the ongoing opioid crisis. Methods: We sourced da.a.from PubMed a.d Google Schola., employing sea.ch combina.ions like “opioids,” “memory,” “cognition,” “a.nesia.” “cognitive function,” “executive function,” a.d “inhibition.” Our focus wa. on English-la.gua.e a.ticles spa.ning from the inception of these da.a.a.es up to the present. Results: The litera.ure consistently revea.s tha. opioid use, pa.ticula.ly a. high doses, a.versely a.fects memory a.d other cognitive functions. Longer delibera.ion times, impa.red decision-ma.ing, impulsivity, a.d beha.iora. disorders a.e common consequences. Chronic high-dose opioid use is a.socia.ed with conditions such a. a.nesia. syndrome (Oa.), post-opera.ive cognitive dysfunction (POCD), neona.a. a.stinence syndrome (Na.), depression, a.xiety, seda.ion, a.d a.diction. a.a.ming trends show increa.ed opioid use over recent deca.es, a.plifying the risk of these outcomes. Conclusion: Opioids ca.t a.sha.ow over memory a.d cognitive function. These effects ra.ge from a.nesia. effects, lessened cognitive function, depression, a.d more. Contributing fa.tors include over-prescription, misuse, misinforma.ion, a.d prohibition policies.
