An initial value problem concerning the motion of an incompressible, electrically conducting, viscoelastic Oldroyd-B fluid bounded by an infinite rigid non-conducting plate is solved. The unsteady motion is generated impulsively from rest in the fluid due to half rectified sine pulses subjected on the plate in its own plane in presence of an external magnetic field. It is assumed that no external electric field is acting on the system and the magnetic Reynolds number is very small. The operational method is used to obtain exact solutions for the fluid velocity and the shear stress on the wall. Quantitative analysis of the results is presented with a view to disclose the simultaneous effects of the external magnetic field and the fluid elasticity on the flow and the wall shear stress for different periods of pulsation of the plate. It is also shown that the classical and hydromagnetic Rayleigh solutions appear as the limiting cases of the present analysis.

We study the effects of thermal radiation of a viscous incompressible fluid occupying a semi-infinite region of space bounded by an infinite horizontal moving hot flat plate in the presence of indirect natural convection by way of an induced pressure gradient. The fluid is a gray, absorbing emitting radiation but a non scattering medium. An exact solution is obtained by employing Laplace transform technique. Since temperature field depends on Reynold number the flow is considered to be non-isothermal case (the temperature of the plate Tw ≠ constant) and for an isothermal case (Tw = constant) the flow is determined by the Reynold number which is equal to 1.

Mullite–zirconia composites containing 20% zirconia（mass fraction） were prepared by reaction sintering route utilizing Indian coastal zircon flour and sillimanite beach sand. 4%-12% of CaO（mole fraction） with respect to zirconia was used as additive. The effect of additive on densification, microstructure as well as various mechanical and thermo-mechanical properties was studied. Incorporation of CaO reduced the densification temperature of the composites to 1550 ℃ compared to 1600 ℃（for CaO free samples）. CaO formed small amount of liquid phase（calcium aluminosilicate）, which facilitated sintering. Average grain size of the composites decreased up to 4% CaO addition, afterwards grain size increased with further addition of CaO. Samples with 4% CaO exhibited ～225 MPa of flexural strength, ～6 MPa·m^1/2 of fracture toughness and significant improvement in thermal shock resistance. CaO stabilized the tetragonal zirconia phase and thus improved the mechanical properties.

Naringin ameliorates acetic acid induced colitis through modulation of endogenous oxido-nitrosative balance and DNA damage in rats

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of naringin on experimentally induced inflammatory bowel dis- ease in rats. Naringin （20, 40 and 80 mg/kg） was given orally for 7 days to Wistar rats before induction of colitis by intrarectal instillation of 2 mL of 4% （v/v） acetic acid solution. The degree of colonic mucosal damage was analyzed by examining mucosal damage, ulcer area, ulcer index and stool consistency. Intrarectal administration of 4% acetic acid resulted in significant modulation of serum alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, superoxide dismutase （SOD）, glutathione （GSH）, malondialdehyde （MDA） and myeloperoxidase （MPO） content along with colonic nitric oxide （NO）, xanthine oxidase （XO） level and protein carbonyl content in the colonic tissue as well as in blood. Naringin （40 and 80 mg/kg） exerted a dose dependent （P 〈 0.05） ameliorative effect, as it significantly increased hematological parameter as well as colonic SOD and GSH. There was a significant （P 〈 0.05） and dose dependant inhibition of macroscopical score, ulcer area along with colonic MDA, MPO activity by the 7 days of pretreatment of naringin （40 and 80 mg/kg）. Biochemical studies revealed a significant （P 〈 0.05） dose dependant inhibition in serum alkaline phosphatase （ALP） and lactate dehydrogenase （LDH） levels by pretreatment of naringin. Increased levels of colonic NO, XO, protein carbonyl content and DNA damage were also sig- nificantly decreased by naringin pretreatment. The findings of the present investigation propose that naringin has an anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-apoptotic potential effect at colorectal sites as it modulates the production and expression of oxidative mediators such as MDA, MPO, NO and XO, thus reducing DNA damage.

The successful establishment of an invasive plant in a novel environment has been attributed to the phenotypic plasticity of plant traits, with most studies focussing on vegetative trait plasticity in either experimental and/or natural habitat conditions. This study explores the role of phenotypic plasticity, in both vegetative and reproductive traits, of an invasive plant Mikania micrantha growing as a ground cover in diverse urban areas in the city of Kolkata, India. Quadrat based plant and soil sampling was conducted in three habitat types, namely roadsides, natural areas and abandoned plots, from four regions within the city. The above ground biomass and fitness related vegetative and seed traits were estimated from the plant samples whereas soil macro-and micro-nutrients as well as soil health (in terms of organic carbon and microbial biomass carbon) were estimated from the soil samples. Habitat-specific selection of traits in M. micrantha was observed in this study. In roadside population which has more chances of long distance dispersal, the excessive production of reproductive biomass as a compensatory response to the low germination ability of the seeds was evident. In natural areas which are more prone to anthropogenic disturbance and where the plant has greater chances of local spread, modulation of both vegetative (higher SLA) and reproductive traits (lighter seeds with faster germination ability) helped the plant to maintain its population. In abandoned plots where there was more number of associated species, the longer span of germination and increased population height ensured the survivability of M. micrantha in the community. Thus, a continuous monitoring program to check for M. micrantha growth should be prioritized in urban areas due to its immense trait plasticity in different habitat conditions where uncontrolled growth can lead to its establishment and spread, thereby making its control more difficult.

Epidemiology of pelvic fractures in adults: Our experience at a tertiary hospital

Purpose: Pelvic fractures are severe injuries and are often associated with multiple system injuries, exacerbating the overall outcome. In India, the incidence of pelvic fractures is on a rise due to suboptimal roads and traffics but related literature regarding the overall epidemiology of these injuries is scarce and scanty. Our aim was to study the epidemiology of patients admitted with pelvic fractures at a level 1 trauma centre in India. Methods: A 16-month (between September 2015 and December 2016) prospective observational study was carried out on trauma patients with pelvic fractures at a level 1 trauma centre of a tertiary care hospital. Demography of patients, mechanism of injuries and complications were recorded prospectively. Results: We observed 75 patients who presented with pelvic fractures, where 56 were males and 19 were females. Mean age of the study populationwas 37.57 years. Road traffic accidents were the most common mode of injuries. Lateral compression injuries were the most common pattern. Associated injuries frequently encountered were lower extremities and acetabulum fractures, blunt abdominal trauma, urogenital injuries and head injuries. Out of the 75 patients, 52 were treated surgically and 23 were managed by conservative methods. Associated injuries of the extremities, head, abdomen and urogenital system indicated a longer hospital stay. Conclusion: Pelvic fractures, although belong to a relatively rare trauma subset, cause a high morbidity and mortality with considerable burden on the economy. Proper road safety training and driving etiquettes along with its strict implementation in true sense and spirit are the need of the hour.

The production of cells capable of expressing gene(s) of interest is important for a variety of applications in biomedicine and biotechnology, including gene therapy and a novel method of stem cell therapy in the various diseases. Achieving high levels of transgene expression for the longer period of time, without adversely affecting cell viability and differentiation capacity of the cells, is crucial. In the present study, we investigated the efficiency of plasmid vector for the production of transgenic cMSCs and examined any functional change of cells after transfection. To do so first we have collected bone marrows from the adult goats and cultured them for isolation of mesenchymal stem cells (cBM-MSCs). These cells were characterized using MSC specific markers including differentiation into osteocytes and adipocytes. Transfection with plasmid vector did not adversely affect cBM-MSCs morphology, viability or differentiation potential, and transgene expression levels were unaffected beyond passage 12th. The results indicated that we have been able to generate transgenic caprine MSC (tcBM-MSC) and transfection of cBM-MSCs using plasmid vector resulted in very high and stable transfection efficiency. This finding may have considerable significance in improving the efficacy of MSC-based therapies and their tracking in animal model.
