We investigated genetic variation of a rice HEADING DATE 1(HD1) homolog in foxtail ***, we searched for a rice HD1 homolog in a foxtail millet genome sequence and designed primers to amplify the entire coding sequence of the gene. We compared full HD1 gene sequences of 11 accessions(including Yugu 1, a Chinese cultivar used for genome sequencing) from various regions in Europe and Asia, found a nucleotide substitution at a putative splice site of intron 1, and designated the accessions with the nucleotide substitution as carrying a splicing variant. We verified by RT-PCR that this single nucleotide substitution causes aberrant splicing of intron 1. We investigated the geographical distribution of the splicing variant in 480 accessions of foxtail millet from various regions of Europe and Asia and part of Africa by d CAPS and found that the splicing variant is broadly distributed in Europe and Asia. Differences of heading times between accessions with wild type allele of the HD1 gene and those with the splicing variant allele were unclear. We also investigated variation in 13 accessions of ssp. viridis, the wild ancestor, and the results suggested that the wild type is predominant in the wild ancestor.

AIM：To evaluate the refractive correction for standard automated perimetry（SAP）in eyes with refractive multifocal contact lenses（CL）in healthy young ***：Twenty-nine eyes of 29 participants were *** was paralyzed in all participants with 1%cyclopentolate *** was performed using the Humphrey SITA-standard 24-2 and 10-2 protocol under three refractive conditions：monofocal CL corrected for near distance（baseline）;multifocal CL corrected for distance（m CL-D）;and m CL-D corrected for near vision using a spectacle lens（m CL-N）.Primary outcome measures were the foveal threshold,mean deviation（MD）,and pattern standard deviation（PSD）.RESULTS：The foveal threshold of m CL-N with both the24-2 and 10-2 protocols significantly decreased by 2.2-2.5 d B（P〈0.001）,while that of m CL-D with the 24-2 protocol significantly decreased by 1.5 d B（P=0.0427）,as compared with that of *** there was no significant difference between the MD of baseline and m CL-D with the24-2 and 10-2 protocols,the MD of m CL-N was significantly decreased by 1.0-1.3 d B（P〈0.001）as compared with that of both baseline and m CL-D,with both 24-2 and 10-2 *** was no significant difference in the PSD among the three refractive conditions with both the 24-2 and 10-2 ***：Despite the induced mydriasis and the optical design of the multifocal lens used in this study,our results indicated that,when the dome-shaped visual field test is performed with eyes with large pupils and wearing refractive multifocal CLs,distance correction without additional near correction is to be recommended.

The ＂sliding graft copolymer＂（SGC）, in which many linear poly-ε-caprolactone （PCL） side chains are bound to cyclodextrin rings of a polyrotaxane （PR）, was prepared and employed to toughen diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A （DGEBA） based epoxy resin. The aim of the work is to understand the effect of SGC on the miscibility, morphology, thermal behavior, curing reaction and mechanical performance of the cured systems. From differential scanning calorimetry （DSC） analysis and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis （DMTA） of DGEBA/SGC thermosetting blends, it is found that DGEBA and SGC are miscible in the amorphous state. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FTIR） suggested that the miscibility between SGC and DGEBA is due to the existence of intermolecular specific interactions （viz. hydrogen bonding）. The impact strength is improved by 4 times for DGEBA/SGC （80/20） blends compared with that of the unmodified system. The increase in toughness of SGC-modified thermosets can be explained by the effect of intermolecular specific interactions of SGC with DGEBA, which is beneficial to induce the plastic deformation of matrix. This is the first report on utilizing this novel supramolecular polymer to toughen rigid epoxy matrix.

Introduction: The present study was a retrospective investigation of the relation between immunohistochemical BRCA1/2 status and prognosis in patients with primary peritoneal serous cancer (PPSC). Materials and Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 14 consecutive patients diagnosed with PPSC other than hereditary breast and ovarian cancer between 2005 and 2010. All patients had serum CA125 levels >40 U/mL prior to starting first-line chemotherapy with paclitaxel and carboplatin. Paclitaxel was administered as a 3-hour intravenous infusion at a dose of 175 mg/m2 on day 1, and carboplatin was delivered at an area under the curve of 5 based on the Calvert method. Patients received six cycles of first-line chemotherapy, except patients whose disease was determined to be progressive during the chemotherapy regimen. BRCA1/2 and p53 protein expression was determined by immunohistochemistry of patient tissue samples. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to evaluate univariate and independent multivariate associations with the effect of clinical parameters, such as age at diagnosis;tumor histology;tumor grade;and rate of change in CA125, and BRCA1/2, p53 status on overall survival. Probability values of less than 0.05 were considered to indicate statistical significance. Results: Two cases (14%) had the BRCA1 mutation, and none had the BRCA2 mutation. Eleven cases (79%) were positive for p53. In the univariate analysis, factors significantly associated with overall survival were (pre-chemotherapy CA125-pre-2nd chemotherapy CA125)/pre-chemotherapy CA125 (p = 0.0034) and (pre-chemotherapy CA125-pre-3rd chemotherapy CA125)/pre-chemotherapy CA125 (p = 0.0245). BRCA1 and p53 status were not predictors of overall survival. Multivariate analysis performed with overall survival as an endpoint revealed that none of the factors examined was significant. Median survival rate of patients without a BRCA1 mutation was 23.5 months (2 - 82 months), and all died. By contrast, one pati

A synthetic polymer with a laminin-apatite composite layer on its surface would be useful as a percutaneous device. The preparation of such a composite was attempted in the present study using poly（ ethylene terephthalate ）（PET） and polyethylene （PE） as the synthetic polymer. PET and PE plates and those pretreated with an oxygen plasma were alternately dipped in calcium and phosphate ion solutions, and then immersed in a metastable calcium phosphate solution supplemented with laminin （ LCP solution ）. The PET and PE plates pretreated with an oxygen plasma formed a uniform and continuous layer of a laminin-apatite composite on their surfaces. In contrast, the PET and PE plates that had not been pretreated with an oxygen plasma did not form a continuous layer of a laminin-apatite composite on their surfaces. The hydrophilic functional groups on the PET and PE surfaces introduced by the plasma treatment were responsible for the successful laminin-apatite coruposite coating.

A simple method based on hollow fiber liquid-phase microextraction (HF-LPME) followed by high performance liquid chro-matography (HPLC) analysis was successfully developed for the determination of UV filters in cosmetic products. A canular extractor was assembled by mounting a hollow fiber inside an external tube with a tee-connector. The organic solvent was immobilized into the fiber to form a liquid membrane as the acceptor phase. The sample was continuously injected into the extractor and the UV filters were extracted from the aqueous sample into organic acceptor phase. The main parameters affecting HF-LPME including extraction solvent, sample volume, sample flow rate, pH values and ionic strength were investigated. Toluene has been verified to be suitable as the acceptor phase. Under the optimized HF-LPME conditions, the enrichment factors of five UV filters varying from 24 to 57 were achieved. The limits of detection for the five UV filters were in the range of 1-100 μg L-1 .The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of HF-LPME and HPLC analysis were lower than 5.2%. The proposed method has been successfully applied to the analysis of the varied cosmetic products.
